The japanese shave pubic areas!? Have you ever looked at a JAV? Save for exception it's a freaking jungle down there, if anything shaven pubic areas is a fetish (Japan has about 500 different kind of sexual fetish, follow NSFW link for proof: http://www.dmm.co.jp/mono/dvd/-/genre/), if anything it's westerners who are obsessed with shaving it, have you ever looked at US porn?

The reason why VN usually have no hair I am guessing is because it is hard to make it look good and it is hidden by mosaic anyways, so they don't care.

In the style of mosaicing being done these days, the vast majority of VNs wouldn't have the pubic hair hidden by mosaics. It's really just an issue of most eroge artists not really knowing how to make it look good.

This might be a weird question but why does the pen*s not have hairs? Is it because of the japanese culture that they shave their pubic hair? Or is it just their art style or are all vn like that? Thanks!

Not really, lol. The pubic hair is simply considered obscene and that goes back to Meiji period, especially the Pacific War, where goverment seeked to ban and persecute everything western, including porn. Not much had changed since then, with exception that obscene materials in general are considered illegal (yes, you heard it) and people selling or distributing these can be punished by hefty fines or even imprisonment. Modern pornography in general is subject to censorship, which typically involves placing pixelization on the genitals; this partially alleviates the problem, hence there's no real reason to remove the pubic hair in adult videos, but it is still deemed as inappropriate in works of art, including manga, anime and games. This is the reason why artists typically avoid drawing pubic hair or do it in a barely visible way. They simply want to avoid controversies and keep a low profile from organisations, such as Nihon Ethics of Video Association and the Ethics Organization of Computer Software. It's not really the censorship, that's the issue though. Much like with many things, it's simply something they got used to and don't feel the need to change.

Yes I know all that, but hum this doesn't have much to do with the OP question and my answer? His question was asking why VNs don't have hair in their pubic areas unlike say in JAV (JAV stands for Japanese Adult Video, basically japanese porn where there is ton of pubic hair) and it seems that the general guess to that question is that the artists usually don't how to make it look good, so they leave them hairless.

Have you even read what I wrote? :chaika:

Japanese artists can preety much draw pubic hair as any other artists; the only reason why they aren't doing it is because it's tied with censorship and obscenity laws, which punish them for doing so, unless they self-censor it in accordance with appropriate guidelines. Japanese laws are outdated and full of silly contraditions and that goes especially for pornography and everything associated with it. Guess what, though - they don't really care. Sometimes the additional effort is not worth the risk of being fined and it's not like they earn a lot.

I've always thought that otakus just simply prefer younger girls to shave their private areas, because milf characters usually have pubic hairs in VNs while school girls rarely do. (And if they do it's usually an option in the settings)

But then why are there plenty of VNs and h-manga with pubic hair that don't censor it?

The pubic hair does not have to be censored, it's the genitals. It does not change the fact a lot of japanese people consider pubic hair in art indecent; it's mostly a thing from the past. In the end it's up to artists themselves - whatever they chose to do, as long as genitals are either covered or censored, they have nothing to worry about.

According to their obscenity laws, pubic hair is considered obscene. Early VNs had pubic hair that was censored along with the genitals but later on they started removing them entirely to make it easier to stick to their obscenity laws and pixelate less of the picture. With time it became commonplace and routine to not draw any pubic hair at all and so it's often the exception to see pubic hair at all now.

The reason you see more pubic hair without pixelation in hentai doujins and the like is that the artists there are usually much lower profile than a big game manufacturer and they just put in a token gesture to obey the obscenity laws with usually a little black or white line instead. As there is no actual hard definition of what is considered obscene, it means it's up to the studios and artists to decide how much to censor and how so as to not draw attention to their work by the police. Ultimately the punishment for breaking obscenity laws is very harsh so most err on the side of very conservative with heavy pixelation; the bigger the studio the worse the censorship often.

EDITED out the factually incorrect component of this post in here.

There is talk of Japan eventually moving away from its censorship (which we all know is crazy in this internet world) by 2050... by that time I'll be 80 and I'm not holding my breath waiting for it.

As for the loli aspect, that's secondary IMO with most portrayed characters being high teens. Japan has not yet become a bald brazilian haven like other parts of the world. Bush is still the norm with real people, so it's not them trying to accurately portray the public pubic.

And as for it dating to the Meiji era, I have no idea where you got that idea from. Obscenity laws began post World War II in response to allied (American) authorities that insisted Japan was too obscene with its mixed bathing and lax laws regarding art works. Once it became law in Japan it became unlikely the laws would become lax over time given the way Japan is very conservative with changing its laws in the laxity direction. It gives their police stupid power they would rather not relinquish today. Ironically the Americans who have evolved with time to some of the laxest rules regarding sexual censorship are responsible for the fucking annoying mind blowingly stupid censorship we see today in Japanese media. The current obscenity law is from 1907, the USA actually tried to have it abolished.

If not for the censure, this should also reflect actual circumstances (not that a lot of VNs actually care to be realistic).

For example, if you go all the way from loser to fucker, or if you get laid "sparsely", then you probably won't be taking much effort in your "maintenance", and you'll be unshaven for the occasion. That is, if you're not expecting the intercourse. Why bother if most often, you don't get to share your attributes?

Also in moe there's more focus on the girls being cute, instead of being realistic. But in truth eroge are made towards a Japanese audience and they should acknowledge pubes as something normal there. More realistic styles of art tend to display them.

About the nature of the "pubeship", Japan is a country with temperate climate (I've heard that they don't like the warm summer too much, they're a mostly clean people after all). I imagine that for a Brazilian it's Hell to keep them, and so it has stuck in the term for shaving. For a Japanese, not that much.
