Whats the reason for Katawa Shoujo always being recommended as "starter VN"?

lol perhaps.  This is just based on my friends personalities.  None of them like anime and would probably feel awkward playing a VN thats setup like a dating sim.  It would have to be something short like a movie with a interesting plot.

There are a lot of other short VNs like Thousand Dollar Soul though. And I'm sure there are plenty of other short ones with less disturbing storyline as well. :wahaha: I could understand not wanting to intimidate newcomers with the length of VNs, but there are bite-size VNs out there that are pretty good too.

You know my first exposure to anime was Ninja Scroll when I was like 11 years old.  I rented it cause it had a badass cover and thank god I watched that shit in my own room and not with my parents.  Full blown sex and guts flying around...  I honestly thought Japanese anime was all about violence and sex after watching that.

So maybe thats why im crazy enough to suggest Saya no Uta as a first VN lol.

That's actually samuel L Jackson's favourite anime.

Are you samuel L Jackson?

To this day its my favorite anime movie to date.  It makes me sad that we will never have anime with that type if quality again.

I know that feel. I'm sad I'd never see an anime that would make me like it as much as Madoka or Bokurano again (well, the manga for the latter anyway).

Well, people might not be into the whole depression thing.

Petsonally I'd consider True Remembrance for people's first vn as it's free and a pretty good story that's not that tropey, no porn either. If you care about art though it's not the best ever, lol.

Because it's easy to read, the characters are interesting, the setting is interesting, the porn is light, and it sets the tone of the genre in an nice and progressive way.

Because it's a fantastic starter VN. It doesn't rely on the typical Japanese bullshit tropes, sure, there are plenty of elements there, but it almost never shoves it into your face like so many Japanese visual novels do. It manages to remain believable throughout the story, which is something few VNs manage to do. In this regard it does benefit form the fact that it remains pretty realistic, but that not necessary for something to be believable. Majikoi is a good example of a unrealistic visual novel that remains believable throughout the story, right from the start it sets you up with ridiculous scenarios and remains true to its universe. Katawa Shoujo also has an underlying theme that is very easy to relate to and make you feel for the characters, a very fitting soundtrack, decent art and some of the most human characters I have come across in a visual novel. And it's truly free.

But VNs are like, 60-80% 'dating sims'. So if you're going to introduce somebody to it, why not start with something as typical, and easy accesbible at the same time, as possible? Katawa fits perfectly.

It's a "starter" VN because the experience of reading it will only be good if it is your starting VN; any later and it will be subpar.

Nope. Or maybe I'm biased, because I did read Katawa as my first VN. But I came back after reading 20+ titles. And I was surpriused how good it holds, how nicely it's written, how not insulting with dumbness it is, etc. It's a good VN on it's own.

I just interpret the title a little differently.  I was under the impression of introducing someone to VN who aren't into anime already.  Most people who know nothing about anime would probably be put off by dating sim stuff.   So i think nice short vn would probably be best that are like a movie in a sense.

Geez, that's it then, that's all. It's my favourite one and I expressed it. I could give reasons why it's a good introduction to VNs, but that wasn't the point in a mostly silly post. What do you care, or what do I care if you don't agree? Why burn your tongue instead of keeping the tastebuds intact?

You sound like Jill :makina:

Katawa Shoujo is that game even your mom would like.
