Nutaku Partners with Kimochi To Develop “Steam for Adult Games”

If this was already posted, I apologize. This could be a great thing as Japanese devs could consider this platform for their adult games. There are already some localized games on here by big name companies. If MG does not carry the game I want, I would rather use this than Steam for 18+ versions of games.

Who will register there? Really, how wide is Nutaku audience? I see no difference between this and using MG site or Jlist. Even if they will create a site (this is not actually too complex), there is a big problem to gain audience. Steam have their audience because they have TONS of games of different genres and VN is just a niche one, which some Steam gamers occasionally catch. While when you create something targeted especially on that niche product, it would get only sales from these niche players, who registered on your niche website, dedicated to porn games.

This is utopian idea.

I will definitely, if it works as well as steam in terms of actually getting your games and stuff, MG has so many issues when it comes to payment and stuff, also I think that if they make it attractive enough, I think we can see a lot of adult doujin games coming over in the future

I would use this. Hopefully they have more then just vanilla VNs.

13 million monthly users on their portal last year.  Maybe by doing this the adult market can grow even larger and maybe we could see some exclusive titles come to the west. I'm all for it and I wish them the best.

I suppose that this is one of the first concerted efforts to try and be the early bird, so to speak, to what could possibly be the leading aggregator of VNs, spurred on by a potential growth of interest in the genre from people finding games on Steam.

If they can branch out beyond effectively H-versions of Steam games (OELVN and localised), either through Mangagamer links or possibly, further down the line, being able to strike their own deals with companies, then it'd be really awesome for this to succeed... but I'm not sure it will. I'm not entirely sure how bothered people will be by getting basically the same games as they can on Steam just with boobs, when most (if not all) can be patched to get the same result. That said, boobs ARE pretty persuasive...

The main people I could see directly benefiting from this would be the English-language VN localization / publishing companies. If this site became well-established, was completely reliable, and charged reasonable fees, then ideally MangaGamer and DenpaSoft could take down their own storefronts and use this, focusing their own efforts on the localization and publishing aspects, and then not have to worry about distribution and sales headaches like payment processor management. That seems to be a regular problem for those guys, it's probably probably quite detrimental to their bottom line when it happens, and it's really not something that aligns well with the rest of their business. I expect those companies currently have storefronts simply out of necessity.

And just to address this before it comes up: yes, for their games which are also released on Steam, I'm quite sure MangaGamer makes more money if you buy their game directly from them than if you buy from Steam. But that's only because they already have the sunk cost of maintaining that storefront. I bet they'd save more money by dispensing with the storefront entirely than they'd lose on the fees, if they had a place to sell their games that was as usable as their own storefront.

If memory serves, Nutaku is a Canadian-based operation - and considering that countrys' draconian laws - I suspect it would be a business venture with heavy-handed restrictions on content.

I do like the concept of a "steam for adult games" however. Just needs to be handled by a company in a position to act freely (or moreso, at least)

My contacts and other sources tell me that Nutaku is a much bigger player than people realize.  Enthusiasts shouldn't dismiss their importance.  It's entirely possible that Nutaku could swallow up digital eroge distribution save for the "fringe" titles it won't carry due to content restrictions.

Nutaku's main audience is not VN fans.  They're targeting the broader adult gaming market.  They optimize for search terms like "hentai games" that VN fans wouldn't use, because that's where the audience and money is.

Nutaku rebuked me when I said this.  However, their content restrictions are pretty consistent with Canadian law, whether that's due to direct or indirect effects.

It will be hard to become the equivalent of Steam... at least in part because it is so easy to set up an account on Steam and fill the wallet using gift cards, rather than utilizing credit card payments.

Why are people anti credit/debit card? I use debit card all the time with no issue.

A lot of it is because online security is an oxymoron...

Yes, I also use a pre-paid credit card for online payments.

In general I like to pay with cash, it's something I feel like I have some control securing. When the cash is on me, people need to physically take it away from me and when there's too much I put it in a bank (which tends to be secure.) With a credit card there's skimming by restaurants and random passer-bys, there's those trojans that get shit from your computer, there's MG and Sony getting hacked and having all those details go to someone else, I feel like I'm not in control of my own money.

This causes stress. I don't like stress ...

You really shouldn't use a debit card for online payments.  Credit cards have superior consumer protections in the US.

My credit card allows me to unfairly skim the profits of vendors though.  There's nothing like the satisfaction of collective bullying bargaining.  In fact, people like you are essentially subsidizing my purchases.

I would love to use a credit card if I have a steady job. lol Not to mention that all the debt that comes from the card usage makes it financially more challenging to use it at all. Not to mention that the bank would probably not issue me any credit cards at all if they know I don't have a steady career in the first place.

As it is now, debit's the way to go for me, unfortunately.

I'm pretty sure I had a credit card before I had an income.  That may be specific to the US however.

I had a credit card before steady income as well and I am from Europe.

If you make debts literally just from using a credit card you might not be smart enough to handle your own finances, just saying.

No matter with what you pay, just don't spend more than you have, it's that simple.

Europe's a long way from South-East Asia. Just saying. Not to mention the Asian culture differing from yours and everything.

And yes, I am a spendthrift. I'm too lazy to save up and, as a hedonist, I got lots of things I want to buy to enjoy my daily life without stress. That being said, it never affected me at all using a debit card since I never got into trouble. I mean, it's fine you want to use credit card and all - that's your business - but I'm fine doing my own thing.

Yep, can confirm.  It's not a good idea to use debit cards online because it's directly using your money.  Pre-paid cards or credit cards are the best way to do online transactions due to the protections you mentioned, and the fact that it's easier in general to get your money back if some douche bag steals your info and slowly buys whatever they want (well, not for pre-paid cards, but you should only load what you need on it, anyway).  I'm getting a credit card as soon as I can for exactly this reason, plus I should start building credit anyway.

This is also the case in Australia which is why I do all my purchases with credit cards. @Rooke Worrying about skimmers and stolen numbers is pointless since Australian laws mean you cannot be liable for more than $50 if the purchases were clearly not done by you. In 30 years of using credit cards, twice I've cancelled credit cards that the online purchaser screwed up and leaked their database with thousands of dollars worth of purchases. After contacting the bank each time I was not liable for a single cent of those purchases. The bank immediately simply issued me with new cards.

I don't see the problem with that. It's the same as cash payment, nothing wrong with that. I've never been scammed before using my debit card, so I guess I never had to worry about such petty details.

I'm just grateful at all being able to use card-payment at all since I used to be terribly annoyed by things I could only buy online with cards, and not cash. Now I could buy everything.

Anyway, aren't we swerving this thread severely off-topic by now...? :makina:

It's not, unless your idea of a cash payment is handing your wallet to the clerk and asking them to take the right amount out.  Credit has the same problem, but the money isn't actually taken out for several weeks, and credit cards have better fraud protections.  The main advantage of credit is that I can take my money back if the vendor doesn't hold up their end of the bargain.

Well, that's true, but you'll just have to be careful of shady deals then. It's almost the same principle of being careful with how you spend your money, the advice mentioned earlier by Ningen.

...And besides, it's not like I have much of a choice in picking up a credit card myself. :makina: Like I said, I don't think I'm able to acquire one, or maybe I just don't really know how the process works. I'm stuck with debit for now, and I think it's fine.

This won't really succeed, at least not yet. Primo - there is no actual market for eroge and adult-oriented vn's on the west. Secundo - porn is evil and must be purged :makina: Once it's up, it'll get flooded with cheap, 3dcg shovelware porn games; an instant line up of high quality titles is most unlikely.

And this is different from Steam how?

And where's the corelation? I didn't even mention Steam, nor am I defending it as a "better" sort of market; it's just highly unlikely Nutaku's attempt at creating a new digital distro platform will manage to at least partially achieve it's success.
