Reflect on your VN History!

Greetings people of Fuwanovel

There have been many ups and downs on these forums over the past couple of years, Loligeddons, MIAs, deaths, 1 star reviews, rollbacks...

But never mind that.

~~
Let's reflect on our individual histories and experience with VNs ^_^

*INHALE*
When I first started reading VNs in Spring 2014, I was a devoted follower to the Cult of Moe. The "happy feels" were just too gud to pass up.

KonoSora - Ohh my gawd when I booted this shit up and A New World played, it really did feel like I was entering a new world~~
Little Busters
HoshiMemo
The partial patches of Noble Works and Dracu-Riot

All things I considered top tier VNs during this time :makina:

Then I reached the glory ages in late 2014, knocking out my current top 3: Rewrite, Steins;Gate, and Grisaia no Kajitsu. These three will forever be my holy trinity.

Played a variety of VNs by Summer 2015: Symphonic Rain, Yumina the Ethereal, Princess Evangile (hihi), Eden*...

~~
Then something changed.

Went in a VN hiatus over the Summer 2015, got absolutely massacred by VN Club's My GF is a President, and couldn't read any full on charamoeges since then. Got lynched out of the Cult of Moe.

Descended into the Cult of Darkness, Fall/Winter 2015, Corpse Party series, Saya no Uta, Swan Song, Cartagra + Kara no Shoujo I & II, euphoria. Gud shit. Or should I say bad shit? Gud bad shit. Then tried to play stuff like Noble Works, KoiChoco, Koisuru Natsu no Last Resort, epic fail.

New year-> Spring 2016 went into mystery/survival, Danganronpa 1 & 2, 999, Zero Escape VLR, Root Double. And Tokyo Babel's apocalyptic supernatural. Also Shikkoku no Sharnoth; bombed Gahkthun though.

Also throw in a quick Lucy and an Otome (Code:Realize) and here we are, with me prepping up to destroy Dergonu in the fabled Koiken Otome Summer Race Bonanza of 2016.

~~
Overall I'd say my main preferences now are

  • Mystery/Survival - They're just so thrilling to read, Danganronpa/Zero Escape series, Root Double was cool too. Also G-senjou.
  • Sci-Fi / Fantasy - Great for epic stories; Rewrite, Steins;gate, ArNosurge, Code:Realize

I can enjoy darker stuff like Kara no Shoujo & Swan Song, disliked 'crossing the line' stuff like euphoria though. Maggot Baits will probably rekt me. Hard.

Moege is a thing of the past, can only read short stuff like Nekopara now.

Chara(mo)ege depends. If there's no fantasy elements ie. Koi Natsu no Last Resort, chances are I can't read them anymore. Stuff like Dracu-Riot / Koiken Otome are where it's at for me now. Need something extra to make the mindless everyday slice of life and petty first world problems interesting, ya know.

I read Analogue: A Hate Story and loved it. Read Katawa Shoujo and was like, "meh". Read Ever17 and was like "this shit is pretty great." Read Clannad, had a lot of fun and really liked it. I really liked visual novels it seemed.

Then one day it happened. The smallest of busters appeared. Now I hate everything and everyone. Especially you reading this.

I think I went over my history a few times in my year posts, though I can't remember so just gunna do a basic summary :vinty:

Had an idea of what visual novels were for a while but didn't dive in. Then I watched Oreimo which really piqued my interest in visual novels (I watched it for the incest). After finishing Oreimo I googled stuff and came upon Katawa Shoujo, which was on Fuwanovel at the time (my first introduction to Fuwanovel when it had muh torrents). After Katawa Shoujo I began to feel like visual novels brought out emotions that manga or anime weren't fully able to convey. Thus one thing led to another and now it's been two years. In my first year I went a lot harder on marathoning VN's and now I just read them whenever.

@Eclipsed How do you have 5k posts? :komari: I think we joined around the same time... sad life.

Started with the Clannad fan TL back in around April of 2014. It was horrible, I didn't use a guide, I ended up heading towards a bad end, and the translation was so buggy on that bad end route that Nagisa's name had been translated as the empty string and Tomoya's had been translated as "No string found create a ticket". Then the music just stopped, and after about 30 BGM-less minutes of clicking through text boxes and occasionally hearing dialogue, I was absolutely hating it. So I dropped it.

Somehow, despite that horrible experience, I still decided to play Little Busters!, and I loved it to death.

From there it was Rewrite, Kanon, WEE, IMHHW, Katawa Shoujo (in roughly that order). Mix of experiences there, but I still look back fondly on IMHHW, so I probably have shit taste. Right after IMHHW is when I joined the Fuwa forums, sporting a self-made peeved Ageha portrait; that'd be February 2015.

At that point, I was thoroughly in the "feels" camp but trying to branch out. After Katawa Shoujo I picked up F/SN, and went "Oh! So that's why they're always talking about this."

Then the reading club revival happened, and that covered most of what I read for the next half a year: Comyu (really enjoyed it; also known as How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The H), YMK (didn't care for it), picked up Eden* on my own (good feelz), OsaDai (cute girls and H, fine; everything else, terrible), and finally Sekien no Inganock.

Sekien no Inganock was a watershed moment for me; it was just... different, and in a way that I only appreciate more as time passes. After that, Swan Song was just looking too heavy for me, so I dropped it, and Symphonic Rain was great but kind of more of the same. After that, I found myself enjoying things like Gahkthun and Demonbane more than even that really good nakige, probably largely because of the fantasy settings. When I finally got to Steins;Gate, I found what is probably my new favorite. It's got a little bit of all the things that I like.

Now, I guess my tastes are a little varied, especially compared to when I was basically just looking for nakige, but I'm still not interested in darker stuff like Euphoria (let alone Maggot Baits). I play random shit, sometimes enjoy it, and usually finish it. I've picked up a couple nukige, with only some regrets (play: Ultimate Boob Wars; don't play: ImoPara). VA-11 Hall-A was a fantastic cyberpunk dystopian bartending simulator / VN. Highway Blossoms was a bust for me. Purino Party isn't a VN and was no HuniePop anyway.

Oh, yeah, and somehow I found myself editing. That's changed my outlook substantially. Now, while reading, I notice a lot more things that make me annoyed than I used to. If you actually enjoy VNs, I don't encourage you to start working on them; it hasn't really helped with that. But, hey, now I get to read Majo Koi Nikki before most of you do, and I even get to help it read the way I think it ought to read, which is kind of cool.

I had the cliche start of Katawa Shoujo in the summer of 2014. The next notable ones were probably Homeward, Fault Milestone One and Katahane. Had a lot of shorter stuff and gaps in between before Danganronpa. Then I started spending a lot more reading VNs to the point where I would devour long VNs in a week or two. It was probably around here that I also lost interest in trying to figure out which choices to pick and just went with a walkthrough. Grisaia no Kajitsu became my favorite VN. About a year into VNs, I started reading some more well-known VNs (Fate/Stay Night, Demonbane, Symphonic Rain). Finally, I just finished Grisaia no Meikyuu (my 94th VN according to VNDB).
Because of all this, I am now on a translation team as an editor and am starting the long journey of learning Japanese two years later. I also dictate VN music from time to time. I discovered my passion for yuri and romance/slice of life. My standards have probably grown higher than they were when I started. Now VNs are my time and money sink, but I enjoy it. Now to get back to my absurdly large backlog...

So, I discovered Yume miru kusuri when I was just a pure teenager (as if lmao) and I absolutely loved the shit outta it, fun thing is. I never followed up on it, I have a vague memory of playing the sagara family but thats it.

So, at the age of 23 I was having a severe depression, its better now, but at this time I needed something I could do and I was so tired of wasting my life away on shit like hearthstone and for some reason I felt like replaying yume miru kusuri, I absolutely loved the shit outta it again, but this time I was craving for more, it fueled my creativity and more importantly it made me FEEL again, so I immediatly got harukoi otome and cross channel, I played cross channel 1 time and didnt understand anything so for me it was kinda meh lol, need to replay that. Harukoi otome was...eh.

But then I came across a kotaku article about saya no uta and because im naturally attracted to wierd shit, this seemed to fit the bill perfectly, so I got it and it was....mindblowing. And then I found fuwa, which was heaven at the time because the torrents were still there, so much stuff to read and so many stories to explore, I signed up got recommendations and here I am.

I started with Katawa Shoujo, then read a whole bunch of VNs, even got into anime a little, eventually after reading just over 50 VNs in two years I'd read most of the TL'd ones worth a damn, and basically stopped, having only read about 6 in the two years since.

Actually started with free to play otome games in late 2014 and moved on to Voltage games (the ones with a pay-per-route system) in 2015. I also discovered PC otome games, mostly original English releases. Early this year, I got Steam and used steam wallet to purchase Amnesia and a couple of indie otomes. Later on, while looking for more localized otomes, I stumbled into visual novels that aren't focused on romance. I started reading the first two chapters of Higurashi a month ago and then moved on to The House in Fata Morgana. Currently, I just bought Umineko Ch. 1-4 on Steam and will start soon. After discovering visual novels on Steam, I built up a wishlist and my backlog.

Somewhere around 2013-2014 I was looking for anime similar to Steins;Gate, and.. plot twist, I didn't read the S;G VN, instead I found Chaos;Head which isn't really similar but the title has that semicolon so I looked it up. All I saw was people saying the anime sucks and that the VN was better, and the synopsis looked interesting so I tried the VN. Most of it was pretty good, although I was fairly confused about the choice system they had in there and the ending was stupid, but I still enjoyed it.

I think I Googled other VNs I could play after that since I was intrigued by the medium, and I found Kana ~Imouto~ on some random site. Played it, but I didn't enjoy it whatsoever, maybe it's because I don't have a sister but I couldn't relate to the protagonist's feelings at all. At least I completed it, unlike CrossChannel, which was the next one I tried to read.. but it was really confusing, so I dropped it and kind of forgot about VNs for a while, reverting to watching anime again.

Fast forward to ~October 2015 and I was randomly browsing the internet. I think I saw an ad for some site where you can play browser games for free, and since I was extremely bored, I clicked it. One of the games listed on there was Everlasting Summer, and I saw that it said "Visual Novel" under it. I already was familiar with the term so I checked it out, and a great VN it was. Then I researched VNs again and came across Katawa Shoujo, which ended up being so good I stalled on it (couldn't cheat on Rin after completing her route).

I decided to read something else instead, and got a torrent legit copy of Sharin no Kuni which had [Fuwanovel] in the folder name.. so that's when I remembered about this community (I've seen the site a few times before) and started lurking more here, eventually registering. I was a bit bored with anime at that time, so my focus shifted heavily in favor of reading VNs, and I finished Rewrite, Grisaia, and HoshiMemo (almost done) pretty quickly after that. Still, I don't know how some of you guys finished 20+ VNs in two years :michiru:

I guess I'm still not jaded and can still enjoy fairly simple, trope-filled VNs (although I don't like SoL), so for now, I'm sticking to a natural progression and putting off playing more hardcore VNs. You know, why not enjoy them while you can, right?

My beginning was Tsukihime and FSN.  I first played them in early-2009, about the time when my anime fansubbing 'career' was reaching its height... and fansubbing itself was beginning its rapid decline due to the fact that Crunchyroll's basic subs were getting good enough that their streams were beginning to dominate.  Tsukihime was an eye-opener... it had never occurred to me before that combining visual and audio elements with a novel-style narrative could be so interesting.  I instantly fell in love, and within six months, I'd read every localized VN that existed at the time.

In late-2009, I was introduced to Translation Aggregator...  and I began my VN-reading 'career' with Jingai Makyou.

That was a Spartan baptism of fire for VNs, if there ever was one... Though I already knew verbal Japanese, my first introduction to Japanese literary narrative was... educational, to say the least.  Many turns of phrase, words, and grammatical usages that simply didn't exist outside of the written word were common in Jingai Makyou.  I quickly realized that I needed to reassess my own understanding, and I reluctantly began the study of kanji I'd been avoiding like the plague until then.

My second VN in Japanese was Dies Irae Acta Est Fabula.  I was stunned... just stunned.  I'd never imagined that a story that went so far off the deep end in fantasy could exist... and it was that VN that doomed me utterly.  Within a month, I was spreading my 'wings', playing anything that I could get my hands on.  I began taking contract work, instead of the one-on-one commissions I'd previously relied on, and I completely rebuilt my lifestyle around playing visual novels.  To me, work rapidly became simply a way to pay to import VNs... and I'm afraid I went a bit crazy.  The first three crates full of second-hand VNs that arrived emptied one of my savings accounts completely, and it was only after I'd spent somewhere in the range of twelve grand that I realized I had a problem.

It took me the better part of a year to rebuild that savings account and 'adjust' my way of thinking to manage my new addiction.

By the end of that first year, I'd pretty much read all the recommendations I'd gotten from friends and several bloggers.  Sanahtlig was one of those people making suggestions at the time, but his tastes and mine only seemed similar on the surface, so we parted ways for a time (he's a gameplay-VN and H addict, whereas I'm a story whore).

I was pretty much completely on my own until I encountered Fuwa in 2012... and found myself a home.  I started my VN of the Month thread in September of 2013 and have been going strong every month since, playing the latest non-nukige releases every month.

Time to tell the story of my scrubness.

Actually, when I joined this forum, I told a slightly different version of the truth, because of 2 reasons.

1, I didn't think my story sounded cool enough (ahh, scrubby past me, you make me smile :miyako: )

2, I though I'd get banned for telling people I didn't purchase a few of my VNs legally, so I made up some stuff around how I totally got it from my Japanese cousin or something. Rofl.

For me it started in the summer of 2015. It was a bit after I started learning Japanese. I have always been a fan of manga and anime, but had no clue what a VN was. My friend was randomly messing around on steam when he came across Nekopara vol.1. He likes to call me a total weeb, and so he went ahead and gifted me that game as a joke. Well, the joke is on him, because I loved it. The H-scenes did weird me out a bit, but I think it's like that for everyone when they play their first eroge. I ended up going through random VN lists online, like "top 10 translated VNs", etc and during that, I found Kaguya's 50 translated VNs to read before you die list. I didn't join Fuwa yet, but it was now officially in my bookmarks.

After that I picked Grisaia no Kajitsu, as it really intersted me. After 3 weeks of playing I finished it, and I was hooked, and started looking for more VNs. I found Kono Oozora, played the whole damn thing in under a week, and at that point, there was no turning back.

Since I had already started learning Japanese, I could start moving into untranslated games pretty early. I remember, when I came here, I was still a bit self concious about the fact that I was self taugh, so I wasn't too comfortable asking for untranslated recommendations at first.

During the period of August to October in 2015 I was a complete scrub. I read a lot, but was a complete vanilla pleb. That all changed when the Euphoria trial came out, and I started playing that. Right before Euphoria, I had also been playing a random nukige that I sadly no longer remember, with some more dark H in it, which made me go "what the hell, let's give this torture porn game a try!" (Some of you might remember my random "should I play this game?" thread :wahaha: )

After Euphoria pretty much corrupted my poor little mind, I started to look for a lot more dark stuff, and after a month or something, the cute little vanilla loving Dergonu was dead. I think I started Maggot Baits in either January or Febuary of 2016, and that was my first guro read. (Surprisingly, I loved it.)

I stopped being a scrub around Febuary of 2016 I think. I found out that I wanted to become a translator for real around that time, and that made me a lot more motivated. I have actually always been interested in translating in general, but never had any place to use my skills. Like, English to Norwegian TV subs are ... well, boring and pointless. The whole country knows English and the subbers here are lazy because of it and work cheaply, making it a really horrible place to worrk. The fact that I now had a community where I could start translating and still keep that linked to one of my hobbies sounded amazing to me, and in April I started my first small fan TL project to test the waters a bit.

And here we are.

It seriously has only been 1 year since I started, and even less time since I joined Fuwa... that is so weird to think about.

Well, I'm pretty new to VN. Anyway, not long ago (around less than 1 year), I saw Princess Evangile on Steam, and thought "Sure, why not?".

And now I'm here.

...Still not a fan of Anime/Manga (and in fact, there're many common cliches/tropes in VN I don't really like).

early summer 2015

I was randomly looking for games and then i saw it - my first vn Grisaia no Kajitsu. And on a whim i got the game (at that time i didn't know anything about anime, manga, etc.) After a few problems with my pc i finally finished it and i really liked it. From then on i got into anime, manga and others visual novels (Rewrite, Little Busters, Umineko, Majikoi and others). Basically i started my new life from visual novel.

Warning: Massive wall of text.

Oddly enough, my interest in VNs started with a news announcement for the adaption of Little Busters in 2012. Between my interest in Key anime, the hype surrounding the news announcement, and my unwillingness to wait for the adaption, I decided to give the VN a go. It became an instant favorite of mine and still holds a spot at the top of VNs I've played so far. Part of me was glad that my first experience with Little Busters was the source rather than the adaption, since the anime really didn't do much justice to the source (save for a few occasions), which, in turn, kinda spoils the VN.

After getting my fix with drama, I decided to ask someone for recommendations on romance VNs. Hoshimemo, Kira Kira, and one other VN that I completely forgot about were suggested to me. Hoshimemo seemed more interesting to me at the time, so I decided to go with that for my 2nd read. Didn't have as strong of an impression on me as Little Busters since I wasn't very fond of most of the characters, but I really did enjoy the final route. The romance hit me with a ton of bricks, and the happy-feelsy ending warmed my heart. As a romance enthusiast, that game had me convinced that visual novels really did have the best storytelling format for me, and my interest in the medium grew.

After that, I kinda ignored the other recommendations I got for romance VNs and just started getting into whatever was generally hyped at the time. It was then that I kinda caved into the fan hype surrounding Katawa Shoujo, where I encountered my first disappointment with visual novels. I don't entirely know why I didn't enjoy it; the characters were good and the story made enough sense. I guess it just didn't fall in line with my preferences for entertainment and I had roughly no interest in it whatsoever. So, I decided to keep it on hold in favor of reading something else, and eventually dropped it after finishing Hanako's route.

After initially putting off KS, I decided to give FSN a try. Back when I was a regular on Animetake's IRC, this was something that was highly recommended by one of the mods there. I had heard about this VN a while before I started reading them, but I didn't have enough interest in the medium at the time. But since I was going at it a little more after a while, I decided to pick this up next. By the time I had finished HF, my passion for the medium was firmly rooted, and I became somewhat obsessed with VNs for a while.

Rewrite was the 1st VN I've ever followed a TL status on, and still the only incomplete VN, aside from demos, I've ever played. I realized that my enjoyment for Rewrite may have possibly been hindered by this experience, as my anticipation for the final route patch had quite a bit of influence on my expectations. When my expectations weren't met, my anticipations had felt betrayed, and I just didn't have a very good impression of the game. After that, I decided to never pick up an incomplete VN again. This is the VN I try to think about when suppressing the urge to pick up Dracu-Riot, lol.

Since then, I've played other games that seemed interesting to me, such as Saya no Uta, Kamidori, the Muv-Luv series, and Ever17. And it was roughly after I had finished Ever17 in 2014 that I decided to join Fuwanovel. Despite the occasional twist that piqued my interest in the game, E17 was immensely boring to me, and my passion for VNs was starting to dwindle. I had hoped that being involved in a community that focused on VNs would have helped me pick back up, but it didn't quite work out that well. Rather, the only thing that came from joining was that I spent more time following news for visual novels rather than actually reading them. However, when a translation I was anticipating had been completed, I did start reading it. I've done that for Grisaia, Air, and Majikoi, but the only VN I actually finished was Majikoi. The other two didn't really interest me that much, and I still have them on hold to this day.

I've slowed down significantly compared to my 1st 2 years reading them, and aside from the enjoyment issues with E17, there is a good reason for that. In 2014, I had developed a very bad habit with entertainment in general. I was more interested in starting things than I was in finishing them. This is roughly around the time my depression had started getting really out of hand, and I was no longer able to focus on things. With the sheer length of story-driven VNs in general, it was difficult to stick to one and see it through to the end. I've had this habit with everything I read, watch and play, but due to the common route format that many VNs employ, this medium in particular is something that I severely struggle with. I now have 7 stalled VNs on my list, and I haven't been making very good headway with them in recent years.

Lately, however, I've been attempting to focus on more specific areas of personal mental health improvement. I've overcome a lot of the issues I've had with anxiety, I'm more mindful of what I eat and drink, and now I'm working to improve my concentration. Believe it or not, even entertainment can tie in with that. My current short-term life goal is to finish every anime I've ever started, and I'll eventually be making my way to manga and visual novels. One of the greatest stresses I have with entertainment right now is thinking about the kind of backlog I've built up, and that's on top of the backlog I've made from stalling shit. So what I've recently done to counter that is to plan how I would tackle my crisis. My initial approach to this involved cleaning up my lists. On MAL, I emptied my PTW/PTR lists of anime/manga that aren't regularly recommended to me. Then I moved to do the same thing with visual novels and cleared my wishlist and, again, only left the VNs that are regularly recommended to me. I figured I'd leave works like these because I usually end up liking whatever my friends suggest, and it's fun to get to talk to them about it afterwards. After that, I decided to drop all the anime I either haven't watched in ages, or just shows that I had no interest whatsoever in. I've reduced my on-hold list from 51 to 37 doing this. Since I started my marathon for these anime, that number has gone down from 37 to 21. I haven't once picked up anything new without finishing something first, and I'm limiting how much I watch that's currently ongoing. I feel that once I have these out of the way, I'll finally be free from the mental burdens I've put on myself, and be able to enjoy entertainment a lot more. And if I'm able to focus on just one thing at a time with VNs, I'll be much more likely to make it through more common routes and enjoy what I love so much about VNs, and that is the romance (however minor it is) in character routes.

2012 Found eroge thanks to anime adaptions (and Hatsusaku thanks to YouTube :pyaa: ). Thought that everything is in Japanese.

Late 2012 found some demos on Fakku. Brass Restoration was shit. :salt:

2013 Saw a pic of :MareWish: Fell in love with her <3 Hoshimemo was the best shit ever. Couldn't find any other cool moeges so played Ikikoi (fuck you all this is a good game.)

2014 Played 1 route of Grisaia and finished Sharin and G-senj. Started learning Japanese.

2015 Played Hatsusaku :pyaa: + many other moeges. <3

2016 More moe <3
