Mangagamer has set up a poll to see if VN players are interested in a localization of Euphoria, a brutal yet well-regarded horror VN which features extreme fetish elements such as torture, scat, and guro. They're also requesting general feedback as to what players think of this potential license.

Sound off and let Mangagamer know what you think! The poll is for all VN fans, not just customers, and includes options for those who don't purchase VNs.

Waa... Euphoria.> That's a scary anime... It's SADISM HELL! Hahaha... I laughed when I watched it..

Sadism in the air. *yum*

As with any other VN-based OVA, it has nothing to do with original title except "kinda similar" setting and cast. Judging about Euphoria by OVA is same, as judging about KnS by OVA.

Although I would never touch a VN like that, I appreciate and fully support Mangagamer in this, as it shows that they are showing little bias in type of VN or content, as they ARE people who would love this, so they are at least gathering info for the entirety of the non-Japanese proficient community, instead of just the ones into a few specific subsets of VNs that conforms with various social norms and etc's.

Out of morbid curiosity I decided to look up a little bit about the game, and...frankly I'm appalled. This goes beyond Saw's "totally fucked up but still entertaining" boundaries and heads straight into flat-out snuff. It doesn't even seem like the 'psychological thriller' it's been described as. I'm not even sure I could be compelled to try it.

As for the poll, I would vote, but it seems you must be registered, and making an account just for one poll seems unnecessary.

I read a couple reviews and most people seem to be praising it, but.. Even with the ability to censor the scat scenes I could never really find myself entertained by this, regardless of how good the story may be. I'm quite fascinated by things such as Saw, Battle Royale, and Dangan Ronpa, but when you combine the violence and bathroom aspects with sex and humiliation, it's just too much for me. I would read a summary online of the plot, but nothing more. Nothing against those who want to read it, of course.

However, if this does get released, I hope it's not one of those things that casts the VN community in a negative light. I feel like this is a title internet journalists would swarm. Not that that's a reason to prevent a localization. I'm quite intrigued to see if it will drum up enough interest for MangaReader to follow through.

I feel like at this point I'm rambling, sorry.

I'm personally against it. If word of this gets out to people who aren't familiar with VNs, it could give them a bad name. Plus, the game itself looks like a weird, extreme fetish game.

Yeah, saw a few points brought up. I think the femnazis would overreact and it may even give VNs a bad name, if not worse. I'm too afraid someone would try and reenact a scene IRL off of it also.

I believe something similar occurred with a game called "Rapelay", though I'm not sure of the details. After looking at the CG set, I have to say that I don't think someone would be so crazy as to try and react a scene from this game in real life, but you never know...

Mangagamer's already released several rape games. Other than this title actually being good, I don't really see the difference (as far as drawing negative attention).

From what I've seen from the CG set, this one looks much more intense than anything they've released so far.

That's true too. I've heard something about Rapelay. I will go look up the CG set after I post this of Rapelay and this VN to compare

Welp

Rapelay is a bit tame unlike this one.

Yeah the "Rapelay" incident still sadly holds VN back a lot for localization purposes... No company wants to meet with that bad publicity again...

Rapeplay doesn't have shit on this game.

That being said, I'm 50/50. I don't think its going to sell all that well for MangaGamer with how hyper-niche it seems to be. I don't think I'd buy it personally and can't say I'm all that interested. But, it does seem to be fairly.. different, I guess? I don't know. Hard to really say positives without reading it.

Rapelay, IIRC, wasn't so much a visual novel as a flat-out rape simulation game. You could follow the girls around, then kidnap them, knock them up, etc. It was pretty intense. It received the attention it did because of its ability to be purchased on English-speaking Amazon, according to Wikipedia. How people can crucify games like this but then play things such as Manhunt doesn't really make sense to me.

Since a lot of people won't be willing to go through 10 pages of forum posts, I've collected various information about Euphoria below in this post.

About the content of Euphoria:

Euphoria most certainly does contain unquestionable rape, scat, torture, and graphic violence against women that does go beyond Bible Black.

Euphoria contains scenes where you are forced to shit into a girl's mouth, and should you have the option on in the menu, the CG visually depicts this act in detail. Likewise, there is one scene where you are forced to beat a girl unconscious by punching her in the face, which is also visually depicted if you have the option on. My statement about fucking a girl while hanging her is an actual scene in the game. Some images for those who aren't faint of heart: (Seriously, don't unhide these images. Don't. It's for your own good.)

As for the legality question, I included it because we're not familiar with all the (changing) laws of the European nations. We have a fair idea of where the US law stands, but it becomes more difficult to keep track of many international porn laws.

(For what it's worth, I have played the game to look at the content. As much as it made me want to vomit on several occasions, I was very impressed with the fact that it was able to do that. I do feel the game has great merit as a psychological horror similar to SAW. That's my personal opinion. Those I've spoken to about the game imagine it would sell on shock factor, since if released, it would be the most extreme eroge ever released in English to date.)

Also a few movies related to Euphoria (such as the game OP) can be found at http://entacom.org/clockup/product/euphoria/download.html

About content options in Euphoria:

But I've started to get curious; exactly what kind of options does Euphoria have for its content?

These:

http://i48.fastpic.ru/big/2013/0624/0d/998ff4c5980926a6c5e938048e17bd0d.png

They work quite interesting way: scat scenes are displayed as is, but with alternate CG that does not explicitly show feces. In guro scenes it shows red screen instead of CG. Text is same.

(Note that there are separate options to toggle scat and guro)

About the script size for Euphoria:

Btw, just checked script size for euphoria, its 37867 lines w/out commands. Would be one of longest MG games if they decide to pick it up — its longer than KnS, KiraKira and twice as long as Dengeki Strykers.

Let's be honest about why Rapelay drew attention: an English title with "rape" in the name (the biggest factor), availability on English Amazon, relatively good 3D animation, and a loli heroine. The simulation aspect played a role, but the other factors trump this. Nothing else about it is all that special among hardcore eroge. Remember, people can't react to what doesn't catch their attention in the first place. Radical feminists don't spend their days playing hardcore eroge to find ones to complain about. They're responding to nothing more than visual cues from materials they come across by chance. If the title had been in Japanese, it probably would've never drawn any attention.
