Opinions on VN companies' being close minded to the western market

Recommended Posts

@firecat I dont know what you are talking about. "we don't look like them or talk like they do" huh? I don't even know what that entire reply was, All I wanted to know was where i can talk to hispanics that are not closely affiliated with black culture. You seem to know and you brought it up so is it not reasonable to assume you have the answer? All the other stuff like stats and demographics baffles me. I don't know why you even bring that stuff up.

look like who? and it was LA as in los angeles.

well its very insulting that you think hispanics do not talk to black people or if you think we are close related to them, just like those american tv shows that people watch and support everyday. who ever you talking to doesn't really show you the whole community (considering that you didnt know how many cubans live in NY and that we were forced to learn english). its very clear that you are only talking to the americas not us, when i mean "us" i mean people in The United States of Mexico (you mad that we stole this :makina:), Spain, South America, and parts Cuba (there getting internet give them time).

once again. WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

I never once said any of the things you are offended by. Quote me for christ sake. Quote it plz. You are taking offense to "midrash."

Midrash= Making a story up from vague words to make sense of it.

Who said hispanics don't talk to black people? I said hispanics affiliated with black culture know of my game. That means if you were born and raised in Jamaica, Queens then you would know.

Your level of offense to things not said is fascinating. Its like someone saying "there are no black people in vermont." followed by me going "wtf you talking about black people for? We have country blacks too. You must really hate blacks. I can't believe you would say that about blacks."

That is  tad overboard.

If i am wrong, quote the words I said to offend you so greatly.

firecat, I swear to God, if you derail yet another thread for no good reason, I'm going to get really irritated.

This is getting pretty off-topic.  If you guys want to discuss this further, please do it over PMs or something, because this thread definitely isn't the place for it.

Well the thing is, Japanese people, and many Japanese companies by extension, are very xenophobic, you have no idea how surprised i was last year when I heard Mangagamer managed to snag up Alicesoft as a partner they've been anti-west for a long time. There are alot of companies that I would love to see start working with the West, light being one of them and GIGA being another, Minatosoft would also be a good one to see, so perhaps as Key and Age and even Keroq now starting to release Products here, maybe we will get some of the studios with the games I want in English...

That's bullshit. Japanese aren't xenophobic, they're just careful with business and won't be willing to take any risks, unless there's a guarantee it will work (business mentality). Language barrier is a far bigger problem and they're actually aware vn's are both a niche in the west, and they're dealing with games highly sexual in nature. It doesn't take long to understand those games are looked upon poorly in the west, while everything outside porn industry with 18+ plastered on top of it is a highly risky business.

I wish I had realized this earlier like back in 2015 where I though VN companies would be happy to release their VNs in the west :amane:

Instead of wasting months on Fuwanovel shitposting, people could use that time to learn japanese instead, so they could actually have something meaningful to share and discuss about with others.

Why is this a common thing now? It just turns into a pissing contest with most good threads :komari:

But in all seriousness he hasn't said anything wrong. Most hispanics in the US associate themselves with blacks.

I disagree, the Japanese are quite Xenophobic. http://thediplomat.com/2015/07/japans-xenophobia-problem/ in fact  i can start producing some articles if you would like.

Oh wow, an NA-based agency article. I never thought I'll live to that day, where a strong sense of nationality and willingness to retain national consistency will be called "xenophobic". For one, I don't feel a strong urge to forcefully become a part of their country, neither do I feel priviledged towards it.

But isn't xenophobia one of the top 3 reasons why Japanese companies are afraid of putting their games to the western market? Pretty sure western localization companies can easily negotiate prices but sometimes the negotiations break down because the Japanese companies don't want their flagship games localized?

It sucks that VN companies aren't willing to give the West a chance. Believe me, if they release a few great works over here, there'll be more attention towards visual novels as a medium and not just "porn games."

You do realize that Nekopara's entries are really small, easily-translated games, don't you?

As for Harmonia... Key has the cash to experiment, most VN companies don't.

To be honest, it bothers me that companies with huge libraries that would appeal to a Western audience don't even consider localization (Akabeisoft and its subsidiaries being a prime example of this).  There are a lot of great VNs out there that could give existing companies a new life if they were willing to permit a localization.  Unfortunately, the likelihood of them doing so is fairly low, most likely due to a hesitation to stick their hands in the bear trap.  That wording 'only in Japan'?  It's all about self-protection.  Whenever an ero-game-maker starts a controversy overseas, it echoes in Japan, causing them more trouble.  That is a (there are a lot of other reasons, depending on the company) reason a lot of the bigger companies aren't even willing to consider localization, even paid for by crowd-funding.  Another is simple insularity... generally speaking, the Japanese are hesitant about any risk whatsoever... both Nekopara and Harmonia are either non-ero or have a non-ero version.  This means that there is little to no risk in bringing them over here, since prudes in the West have always been the biggest reason VNs don't come over here officially, even as ero-lovers were the beginning of VNs coming over here in the first place.

Such aversion for immigrants (especially illegal immigrants) is by no means a uniquely Japanese phenomenon.  Look at the US and Donald Trump's rabid nativist following.  Look at Europe and the rising anti-Muslim sentiment.  The US is a nation of immigrants.  Western Europe is one of the bastions of democracy and has some of the most liberal social attitudes in the world.  Yet they have the same exact issues, and no one considers the US or Western Europe xenophobic.

Discussion of xenophobia is relevant to the original topic.  This article does little to prove that point, however.

I don't think liberal means what you think it means... France extorts 400 billion euros from Africa annually for "the benefits of colonialism."  Failure to pay means sanctions galore.

That's the reality we have to live with. Hopefully VN companies are more willing to experiment with the West in the future, but I feel that's wishful thinking on my part.

It isn't altogether unjustified... Sekai project will probably keep bringing over stuff that can have the h-scenes removed without making it seem weird (though I think Grisaia's Amane route needs its h-scenes, lol), and I can't see Mangagamer stopping its work anytime soon.  In the end, it is all about how much the people in the community are willing to pay.  If we buy the games, those companies will keep localizing them.  tbh, I think even Akabeisoft and its subsidiaries might consider localizations if h-scenes were removed, since those are the biggest obstacle to them...  but their IPs are pretty big, so they would probably also ask for a rather large amount of money.  This is not even mentioning the sheer amount of voice-acting in some of their games... the cost of paying off the voice-actors isn't something that should be taken lightly, and Akabeisoft2 uses some of the best/most highly paid VAs out there.

Sekai Project already has enough glaring flaws and MangaGamer doesn't bring over the best stuff from the companies they decide to work with. Honestly, the best option at this point in time is to learn Japanese if you have the time and motivation to. It's not looking amazing with localisations. Sekai Project brought over quite a few big ones, but they're starting to become more and more hated every time they use Kickstarters and JAST is barely releasing anything nowadays.

Doesn't pass the sniff test - poor Africa coming up with 400 billion Euros annually is an absurd concept. Sorry. Whoever wrote the article you got that nonsense from did ludicrously bad research.

France holds a great deal of the cash reserves of 14 African nations on their behalf, a sum which comes up to about 20 billion. NOT 400 billion. And for France, that's a pretty puny sum btw. It's also a voluntary arrangement, one which they don't exit from because even though everybody is unsatisfied with the current situation there is a distinct lack of a better option. The CFA gives them ... sort of a link to the Euro which offers stability and investment opportunities for their countries. The link to the Euro which France provides prevents their inflation from going into Zimbabwe-esque territories, for starters.

But the African countries seem as though they want to exit from the agreement (if reports from last year are any indication) and so we may see this practice dissolve over the next few years *shrugs*. I should point out that some nations have already exited the agreement, because it’s voluntary
