Visual Novel Kinks, Tropes, Cliches, Stereotypes, and Common Logic Flaws you are tired of seeing

There are those moments where you've seen it at least 900 billion times to the point you can predict everything what's going to happen even the character dialogues. What are some VN kinks, tropes, cliches, stereotypes, and common logic flaws you want to be toned down or even completely eliminated? Well I have probably 100+ but I'll post my top 5 for now and reply/add more as I see people post theirs.

1. School setting - Does "everything" have to happen in school mainly in high school? Umineko, Ever17, and Steins;Gate disagree. You can have a great plot while in college, workplace, or outside of school. Make more original settings please Japanese Devs. Heck, even a vn that happens in the bathroom, in church/mosque, or under a bridge is better than in (high) school. :yumiko:

2. Protagonist walks into a room, sees a heroine naked - "Ecchi, hentai, baka, baka!!!!!" Poor, innocent protagonist is now labeled a pervert. Good bye logic? Wait... Bitch, why don't you lock the room if you don't want to be seen especially if you are aware that a man is in the house?! :saber:

3. "Damee! Yamete!" - Apparently "No!", "Stop!" and "You can't!" means "Yes!", "More!", and "Keep going!" in visual novels' "sexy" time? Imagine if the protagonist actually stops every time she says that? That would be absolutely hysterical. :wahaha:

4. Alone/Unhappy protagonist - Maybe a good 95% VN protagonists start out as a single man, poor, loner, and/or a virgin. Can there be a vn where the protagonist is already successful and actually a socialite? It might look like there's not much to work with the story, but successful, rich socialites have problems too you know. :amane:

5. Dates with heroines are linear/predictable - only consists of shopping, going to restaurants, movies (almost all VN dates have this), and possibly a love hotel if the date nails a critical hit. :makina: Not sure if the storywriters have been in dates before, but I can think of 50+ other things I could do while dating, not just those 3-4 things.

Funny how you just listed all the things I like in VNs :sachi:

Also if I have not understood wrong, don't girls always mean the opposite they say? :Kappa:

I was going to do an exact same thread but you beat me to it:P

6. The old childhood friend (osananajimi) waking up the MC, fuck this trope! specially when the mc is a dick to the heroine but she is just in love with him just because...
I'm actually very curious to know if this happens in Japan for real... Who the hell wakes up early every single day for several years just to wake up another person?most of the time without even asking... it almost sounds like a sociopath...

7. All the heroines are in love with the mc since the first time they saw him without any reason at all. saw him = instant love. Specially when the mc is bland and doesn't even talk most of the time... he is there doing nothing, going to school everyday and yet has 6 girls madly in love with him O.o

8. Blatant character archetypes.

For fuck's sake, put a spin on things! It's just boring to see a tsundere or kuudere or whatever at this point. I really want to see more varied heroines, your character is not deep enough if her mannerisms can be summed up in a single word.

1b. Suspension Of DisbeliefTM Proudly Presents: A High School Where Somehow Everyone Is Over 18

I just want stuff to make sense, this is up there with the "2000 year old dragon that looks like a middle schooler" stuff. It's just annoying.

9. Pussyfest

I'd like to see more VNs with an actually balanced set of characters, too many VNs have the (almost) only male character be the MC. It'd lead to more complex character interactions and a more believable cast overall. Vice versa goes for the protagonists, we need more female protags both in terms of romance and overall. Playing the same Everyday Takeshi in every VN is bland after a while.

10. Teenagers everywhere

For fuck's sake, can't we just have more VNs (especially nukige) that are about people of 25-40 years of age? Highschool-level casts get old incredibly fast, and you can only develop a bunch of high schoolers' character interactions so far. It's a fact that people develop more unique and varied personalities as they grow up, moreover, a given group of adults can be in far more varied circumstances compared to teenagers (e.g. most teenagers go to high school, whereas adults can be doing anything from doing cubicle work to being in the army to frequenting casinos to leading a jobless, modest life). We need more VNs that focuses on ages beyond high school, the genre's suffering for it.

11. Moege

I believe if you remove the obligatory high-school setting and 18-years old mental activity - story could evolve into something good. I very rarely see anything interesting and believeable happening in high-school . In real life all the fun starts right after high-school, in college dormitory, in part-time works, etc., which high-school is a day after day in same fashion. Dunno, who came with idea that each VN must have a high-school trend.

1. Someone make a petition to abolish school settings, please. The reason I dislike school settings most of the time is not because I think school settings can't work, it's because most of the time it's simply there as a plot device to make the characters have classes and have an easy excuse to meet each other, but other than that it never serves any logical purpose half the time. I know it's because of the whole "highschool girl" fetish, but still, it's stupid if it's just there for the sake of being there.

2. "The beautiful transfer student", I'm sooooooooo tired of seeing this trope, it's the biggest cop out to introduce a character ever and I generally tend to hate whoever the heroine is, unless they make a good excuse for their existence. Why is it that a main character always has to magically transfer into a school in the middle of a freaking semester? I just don't get it. This is also the result of having mandatory school settings in everything.

3. Sex talk in VNs is also pretty horrible sometimes. Now I know Japanese pornography is different than western pornography in that they usually tend to have a lot of descriptive dialogue, but while I'm used to and enjoy it most times, sometimes it gets so ridiculous, like the heroine describing how the protagonist's penis is going down her throat while she's actively sucking on it. You don't have to tell me, I can see it happening, and you sound like you have a baguette stuck in your mouth!

4. Protagonists who just want to live a peaceful, undisturbed life. To some extent, I can sympathize with someone who just wants peace and quiet, I myself enjoy it too, but why are so many protagonists like this, and why are so many protagonists like this actively getting involved in shit they know is going to ruin their peace and quiet? Japan pls.

5. [MOTHER FUCKING SAKURA PETALS EVERY FUCKING WHERE I CAN'T EVEN SEE 5 FT IN FRONT OF ME]

6. Ejaculating inside and never getting anyone pregnant. Because it's a safe day every day of the month.

7. "Asspussy". No. It's an ass.

8. "Mouthpussy". No. It's a mouth.

9. "*anything*pussy". Go fuck yourself.

Totally agree with point #8. One dimensional characters are usually not fun to read about when you can predict their every move. I would like to have a character who may act like tsundere in most situations but maybe something else when it comes to interacting with other people, when she's alone with the protagonist, etc.

Girls inviting themselves into the protagonists room/apartment to live there without his consent. He just agrees and readily gives away his bed or has it hijacked (this is always described. Japanese readers probably get off by being overly chivalrous or something). Fuck you bitch!, you can sleep by my side if you want, but if you're too much of a princess, get on the floor or on the sofa or go home.

Edit: Obviously i mean only non emergency situations, even if emergency situations should rather involve a hospital bed not the protagonists.

After this last VN I read, I have begun hating this so much. The heroines all invite themselves over, the protagonist magically accepts, and they all feel entitled to live like princesses, it's so absurd. One of them even decorates her whole room without permission because apparently now it's her house. The house also happens to be a book store, and none of the heroines helps out with chores with the exception of one who cooks the meals.

Freeloaders, NEETs and Hikikomori, they are everywhere in Japan apparently. It's also not surprising in Japan if you're 40+ year old and still live with your parents. Asians in general are very family oriented, unlike most of us here in the west where we desire to be free and liberated from household rules and want to live more independently. Also the America = Freedom mentality. herpderp :Kappa:

Meanwhile if I try to do a thread like this everyone just calls me salty and angry.

Cause this thread was done 10 times in the past. But you can't ask newer members to go dig it out.

As for the thing I hate the most : Weak shonen protagonists, whether they become strong or not, they piss me off.

Bonus : Love triangles, It's not cool leaving someone on the side. & high pitched voices

This prolly isn't a trope or a cliche but -- using the first-person perspective when the central character is not the narrator. It really hurts the tale because it ends up lacking a distinctive voice/personality for the MC, a personal feeling to the story, or a proper window to the rest of the characters' lives thus being unable to fully develop some aspects of their lives. Clannad, for example, never actually made me care for the Ryou/Kyou route conflict, as I've never actually seen the two communicate in a manner that feels genuine or sincere.

Of course, this doesn't include shifting or unreliable narrators a la Umineko, Symphonic Rain, Steampunk, etc.

Haha. Totally true of course; who the hell has an exciting high-school life? :makina:

I guess the idea was that it would appeal to the reader. Like, "Hey, you're in high-school right? Well! Guess what! So is this main character, and he gets all the pretty girls!"

For me I'd say that one generic childhood friend heroine who we see in LITERALLY .... EVERY .... SINGLE .... ROMANCE VN.... EVER.... :pyaa:

Please just make it stop!

On that note, one generic stereotype that I LOVE and want to keep around forever: Twintail tsundere heroines. They are the best. I don't care what you say. They rock!

Is it just me, or whenever the protagonist passionately kiss a heroine, it always lead to sex?

Like, oh yeah! We kissed! Now I accept it as a sign that you've surrendered your body and soul.

In my experience, it typically goes like

[Random kissing ensues]
Female A: "Protag-kun, I feel something hard against me"
Male A: "I don't know how that happened."
Female A: "It looks painful, I'll relieve it for you"
[Oral sex follows]
Male A: "I'm sorry I ejaculated all over your face, here's a tiss- oh wait you're eating it all up, why are you doing that pls stop"
Female A: "It's okay, it tastes good because it's yours. But it looks like you're still hard, which is physically impossible, guess I have no choice but to have sex with you now even though I'm a virgin and know nothing about sex"
Male A: "Guess it can't be helped"
[Virgin protag proceeds to display his amazing sex prowess while the girl enjoys having her vagina bleed to death]

1. Ordinary Protagonist

'Protagonist-kun who have a smoking hot childhood friend and adorable little sister is nothing but your average highschool boy you can find anywhere'

BULLSHIT I TELL YA :pyaa:

Even having one of those is enough to distant you from the word ordinary much less two at the same time!

2. Kind & Hardworking

'She fell in love because of his kindness and his hardworking nature'

While i know that being nice is a good trsit to have it's not a reason to base all of your love on that trait alone.

What'll you  do if you meet someone nicer than Protag-kun? Dump his sorry ass?

3. Shy Trap

A personal preference but i'm pretty tired of seeing this one.

Yeah you know in many Trap VN the protag is always shy when disguising as a girl? I mean i get it they're embarrassed and all but still... :vinty:

I mean, dang it Protag-chan you are able to become a beautiful girl suprassing even a real girl. Have some pride in yourself!

Nice example for not being this trap is Aku Josou's MC.

That instant-harden ability every protagonist possesses. I guess even if the protagonist is suffering from malnutrition, the ability is still active.

And maybe:

1. Rich, hot girl out of nowhere falls in love with a poor, plain-looking protagonist. Saying that it was fate, out of curiousity, or simply the protagonist is 'the coolest guy in school'.

2. A female teacher falling in love with a student protagonist, saying that she even doesn't know how to fall in love. Man, 28 years without falling in love ever once? Even high school characters have fallen in love at least once.
