The fact that people think it is groundbreaking means it is groundbreaking. Basically, if you can show it to an average Steam user and they go "whoa, what the heck, what's this doing on Steam??" then it clearly means it's doing something people don't expect out of a Steam game. And while it's certainly pretty tame, there's still no other VN on Steam to go as far as it in their sex scenes.

While lesbians with exposed naked bodies HAVING sex in a mild frequency can be put on Steam now, I expect some VNs similar to follow suit and devs constantly testing the waters to see what gets approved.

It's almost like that one kickstarter campaign I saw: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/digitalmanga/vanilla-essence-a-heartwarming-erotic-manga-anthol?ref=discover

Apparently you can now bypass hentai/porn restrictions by just naming your work "erotica". :wahaha:

Sure, and that's great if it happens, but until I see the change in mentality, I shall remain my usual skeptical self and continue to consider this just a nice gift.

Also I absolutely despise the advertisement the game's been having in most outlets, it's like having sex scenes is the only thing it has going for it when it's one of the better yuri visual novels out there in terms of story. It'll also probably result in Steam being filled with "10/10 would fap again" reviews, which makes me kinda sad.

Sex sells. It's been one of the pinnacles of marketing since the dawn of time. You can make someone who absolutely despises broccoli actually buy and eat it if you had a very sensual person to their tastes market/sell it to them.

Sure, but you can also make something with broccoli that actually appeals to even people who think they don't like broccoli. I recommend http://www.thugkitchen.com/roasted_chickpea_broccoli_burrito.

And back on the non-metaphorical side of things, I've literally never read anything yuri and not even been more than mildly interested before, but I'll definitely be giving this a try simply because people are saying it's actually a worthwhile read. Hell, I actually went out of my way to defend this game already in another forum, months ago, where it was getting bashed sight unseen because people were assuming it was nothing more than "animated porn" (or some phrase along those lines). While I don't have any problem with nukige, I expect this to be more than nukige, and it's disappointing to see it marketed as such because it reflects negatively on the overall merit of the medium of games that include erotic content.

Back to the metaphorical side, it's almost like blessing peoples' irrational hatred of broccoli, saying it's always got to be something they don't like and it inherently tastes like crap - but it doesn't. There are genuinely tasty broccoli dishes (like that one I linked - seriously, try it, it's easy, healthy, and tastes great), and there are erotic games (including yuri, yaoi, etc.,) which are more than mere pornography, and I'd really like for people to be more willing to say that with me, in the hopes that if enough people keep saying it we can someday get past the bizarre Puritanical legacy that the US especially, and to a lesser extent the rest of the modern world, has picked up over the last few hundred years.

I wonder how many of them actually read this visual novel and aren't just saying this because it's liar-soft so it must be good, right?

Because until now, I still haven't seen anybody who played this game in Japanese talking about it and who isn't just a big yuri fanboy/-girl and is hyping this game because it's yuri(!!!!!11) and not saying what we can expect this game to be.
Judging from Mangagamer's advertisement, this better be the biggest lesbian orgy ever, because that's literally everything they say about this: "Much naked girls. Many yuri. Wow."

Well, the only thing Mangagamer said about euphoria was also just what a sick fetish game it is, not saying one word about it having a good story or something like this. So I hope Gay Ghosts is also more than watching slutty lesbians licking their not visible omankos even though that's the only thing people are talking about....

I've been playing the demo a little and from what I've seen it's looking to be pretty good. It's both really entertaining (Yurirei is almost Grisaia-level of quotable), but also really heartfelt how they tackle the relationships and how the girls react to their own sexual orientation and feelings. The demo might not be fully representative of the final product, but at least it totally sold me. Then again I was pretty interested from the moment I heard it's from Liar-soft and not a nukige.

But yeah, it's little disappointing how the marketing went. It doesn't help it's the "first uncencored VN on Steam" and how fixated everyone is on the sex.
I still want to hear a proper comment from someone who has read it Japanese, but at least since Koestl and some others have called it legitimately adorable I'm not too worried.

I think the game is just being advertised in the wrong way, although EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE because SEX ALWAYS SELLS. I played almost all of liar-soft games and reading Gahkthun atm and they are very good at storytelling, narration, and perspective switching techniques (at least for their games Kusarihime and beyond). I don't expect this to be Sharnoth, Inganock, Kusarahime or Gahkthun quality but it should be a solid 7.5/10 title like most of their releases.

I'd encourage you to take a look at things we've actually posted about the game again if you seriously think that's how we've been presenting it. Perhaps you would care to check out the game's promotional site or try the demo

As much as it'd make my job easier we unfortunately can't control how the press decides to spin things. Anyone expecting a nukige or anything close to one is going to be sorely disappointed.

So I've been playing Kindred Spirits for a good while today and I can say it's really good.

It strikes a really good balance between being entertaining and... not serious per say, but tackling the more sensitive topics tactfully. The romantic progression is feels really natural and heartfelt; it's both little awkward and really endearing, and portrayed in a down-to-earth way that you don't see very often in visual novels. Some scenes made me actually flashback to my youth, my first love, even though I certainly didn't attend a all-girls school nor had a same sex crush, but the same natural and awkward feelings can be sensed.

The characters, which I think there are 16, are all nicely fleshed out and distinctive too. I'm especially very happy with the effort that went into the localization, as each of the characters stands out from each other with unique speech quirks, some more notable than others, but still. The diverse cast also brings a wide perspective into different types relationships and problems and I had blast following all the different pairings and groups.

Also extra points for Yuna (the main character) for being a Cooking Goddess. I probably enjoy cooking references and descriptions more than I should, but that girl is more amazing cook than Emiya Shirou. So yeah, if you happen to like cooking, there's lots of nice things for you in Kindred Spirits.

I actually want to recommend Kindred Spirits to pretty much everyone. It's Yuri, but there's much to love even if you don't especially like yuri. It's school romance, but done in rather different way, so it fits even for people that don't like moege or stuff like that.

Kindred Spirits is great, go buy it!

MangaGamer and LiarSoft can be happy since they are already getting press coverage from big game magazines for their release again. The German GameStar magazine posted a small article about the release of the first uncensored 'Sex Game' on Steam. It'll be interesting to see if other game sites follow. PC Gamer is usually rather open-minded about visual novels so I do expect them to drop a note about it too.

Haha, I also read this and tweeted it yesterday because it's that astonishing. Really game journalism at its finest, lol.
Well, I guess nowadays everyone just copies from Kotaku... :amane:

Ever since this game got announced it was coming out of steam, these motherfucking journalists kept releasing controversial articles just for click-bait. Tag everything with "sex game", "lesbians", "porn on steam",  and watch the idiots crowd in and voice their anti-gay/anti-pedophilia/anti-pornography comments.

At least we are somewhat going out from the censorship. I doubt this game had any chance of coming out 5 years ago. While we don't have any heavy phallic or suggestion of penetration on the sexual content, we are getting somewhere. Steam doesn't have censorship for extreme violence or gore or at least not as strict as sexual content, so I consider this just a pointless double fucking standard with censorship laws.

Although I hope this doesn't evolve into something worse like people considering it a double standard that so called "gay/lesbian porn" is allowed on Steam but not heterosexual sex. Yeah, I doubt we will be heading to that latter direction soon with all these extreme conservatives and soccer moms calling out everything as something that corrupt children's minds instead of them being more fucking responsible and practicing proper parental control skills.

You really expect something else? :makina:

I think Valve mentioned it before but the reason Steam cracks down on sexual content is because of international obscenety laws, not because they're incredibly conservative or something. Obscenety laws are really hard to fight against and could put Steam in trouble in countries where pornography is either illegal or eroge is considered child porn *cough*Canada*cough*.
Until Steam can sort out a system that protects them from these laws, it's unlikely they'll allow full blown eroge on Steam. What I think is the best solution is to do what HuniePop did and have patches to give you the uncensored content instead, that way you technically still don't have porn on Steam, but you can still get the "Steamy" content.

HuniePop sets a positive example for something!

Hmph... This is interesting :illya:

I don't think the negative press it's getting is automatically a bad thing. Of course that old adage 'there's no such thing as bad publicity' doesn't always apply, bad press is sometimes TOO horrific, but I think a title like 'first uncensored sex game on Steam' (and I can't tell cause I can't read the article) will make many thousands of dudes suddenly start drooling and staggering mindlessly to the nearest computer FIRST before it does anything else. Just my theory anyway.

Well what if while having sex, you cover them up under/behind the blankets or maybe a view from the top of a missionary mission behind the man's back? Apparently you can get around censorship on sex these days as long as you don't show the bottom half. Boobs can easily get by as long as there is some form of pasty on top of the nipples too. I've also seen games using silhouettes to show the sex act. These are just a few ways to show heterosexual sex to bypass censorship laws and there's definitely more out there.
