Have You Ever Accidently Came Upon a VN?

i was think about this the other day. a few months ago i wanted to read this because it was nukige (dont judge meeeeee) and the art was by one of my favorite illustrators. plus it had a loli vampire. what more do you need? so i went to download it and installed and found out it wasnt the vn i wanted but this one. not that i was complaining to much because it took place in the same series and was by the same illustrator so i figured id read it anyways. it was a very good read, to say the least. i actually preferred it over loli vampire.

so thats it. do you have any stories like that?

I had to read the title about three times to make sure I didn't get the wrong idea

I think this is something that happens to almost all of us at least once. A lot of users here stumbled upon the VN genre completely on accident even.

If I had to point out the most random story, I'd say it was when I was browsing /h/ a few years ago and found some Katawa Shoujo CGs with Emi and thought having sex with crippled girls seems like a cool game idea this looks like a really good game, and then I found out the title and played it and fell in love with it, even though Emi didn't end up being the best as I initially expected and Hanako won me over.

Hanako FTW.

also i know what you mean by the title. it was either that or "Have You Ever Accidentally Read A VN". this made sound like you tripped and fell or something and landed on someones pc, while a vn was on.

Kinda? They don't put the H scenes I like in story-heavy VNs (most of the time. There's some exceptions, though), so whenever I'm looking for a nukige I always find that, a nukige.

That said, sometimes I wanna read charage or something and I find nukige disguising itself as an actual game. It's a frustrating experience.

...Never went as far as downloading the wrong eroge, though.

Hah, wow, I read the title and went... O___O

I´ll leave the answer to that question for a different thread :makina:

But yeah things like this happens to me a lot. I just randomly stumble upon a VN, like the art or the synopsis; what have you. Then I just add it and end up playing it. To be honest, half of the VNs on my list have been discovered like that.

I haven't really downloaded the wrong one ever though.

...and I understood by the title, that thread will be about something like:
Did you ever found a mention of vn (as a genre, or specific title) in place you not expected? Like a reading article about something in 'higher class' press and then, boom, vns mentioned. :P

It actually never happened to me. I hear about comics, mangas, paintings, different type of games in different, unexpcted places, but to stumble upon a vn mention or reference, it must be some highly vn oriented medium. Is our little hobby that much niche?

Oh, and that loli vampire vn? Jesus chroist, one of the most beautiful art I have seen. Splendid. Shame it's only a nukige, untranslated, and short. :v

Katawa Shoujo on reddit. People were spamming "OMG! You get to bang crippled chicks in this game, get it now!" With my irl job involving social medias, this immediately stood out to me as to why reddit was going crazy with this so I had to play it myself.

Also I was looking for Civilization/Age of Empires type of games or of similar genre and gameplay and one of the top results linked me to Sengoku Rance. Possibly one of the best vns I played with gameplay.

Last but not the least, how I discovered my first VN: Ace Attorney. It was the peak of internet meme rage and the Objection! meme was being spammed on the internet. Due to my curiosity, this led me to playing Ace Attorney and several years later I'm so addicted to VNs that I am nearing my 1,000 VN read count.

eh yeah, my first VN was yume miru kusuri and it made me die of feels, so I was like "wow I would love to read something like this again"

For some reason I didnt find any community or VNDB, if I had done that, I most likely would have been a fan for so many more years than now lol.

Because.

The VN that I randomly stumbled upon afterwards.

Was

Harukoi otome.

Was pretty much aware of VNs thanks to anime but never thought they were translated so didn't care about them. Around 1 year after that I found out that Hoshimemo in in English and immediately fell in love with Mare. So IDK if that is accidentally.

I have found some interesting VNs by accident though but there's too many of those to write a story about it.

Went looking for straight-up porn games and found Katawa Shoujo, not even knowing what a VN was.  Google helped to make me a deviant that likes Chinese Powerpoint porn games.  Thanks Larry Page, I owe ya one.

You poor, poor man.  Can you take any solace in the fact that Sakura Spirit didn't exist yet and you didn't buy it?

Came here for cummies. Disappointed.

Anyway, the first VN I stumbled upon was technically Fate/Stay Night, since I was looking for more facts about the anime after watching it back in 2006 or something. Didn't know what the fuck a visual novel was back at the time though, so I didn't get it. I just knew it was some game that I won't be able to play because it's not in English. Five to six years after, I went and searched stuff about Fate/Stay Night because my interest in it was rekindled. While searching and reading about visual novels, I chanced upon a visual novel with a cute girl in a maid costume.

And so, my first VN became G-Senjou.

Yeah, I immediately forgot what I was initially looking for because I saw this picture.

Well, not to brag, but... *reads the subject* oh you meant something different

Anyway for me it was how I took my first real step into the VN world where I watched an anime called Lunar Legend Tsukihime (which may also double as a discovery of my ability to pull things from alternate dimensions as so many say this  doesn't exist ), thought it was good but pretty rushed so I began looking and asking around about a manga that surely would have more to tell, and soon found out it was based off a "dating game". This made me think "a game where you can date a vampire or an immortal vampire slayer? I must check this out" and further research got me to find out about Tsukihime, its then ongoing translation project and from there the revered Type Moon.

It happens alot. However i found my favorite totally randomly and luckily. I talk about Everlasting summer. I was looking for hentai (don t judge me neither) and clicked on something. Suddenly an ad popped up. I tend to ctrl+w every ad but there was a hot japanese girl with nude nipples so i clicked on it and went further. Came up on nutaku, to play it i had to register, so i did and played it for like 15 minutes. Damn it s a boring game with lack of hentai, and i went browse their other games. Strangly enough they have the site full of Japanese hentai games. But i just saw a game marked "Visual novel". I was like... oh shit i must check it. (I had no idea what kind of game it was) there was only a single VN among all the other games. And even strangely the game is russian and it was on such place... Well right after i played it for like 10 minutes it lured me totally in. I paused and went find out everywhere what kind of game it is. I fell in love with that game and it was 100% randomly. Would you ever follow an ad and register on a site to pkay a game? I guess not, but i gotta be thankful that it brought me to the VN. I haven t been using steam so i had no way to find a VN and even online and free one.

All talk about Katawa Shoujo, maybe i m the only one that didn t play it yet.  But i sure will!

It was back in the days when I was fairly into vns. I had recently come to know about Fuwa and used to stalk the old Majikoi-Translate Thread (the now Random-chat thread).
Then I had a certain feeling to read something different and it just so happened that the peeps there were talking about how great Monster Girl Quest is .......
Next thing I know, I've downloaded MGQ and am looking at the "~Lose and be Raped~" in the menu screen. I was questioning my sanity as to why exactly did I download it, 'so since I had already spent my bandwidth I might as well play it' is what I thought. Started it, waiting for the inevitable dumb and crappy scene where I would laugh at my stupidity......
But well such a thing never happened. Rather I just loved the damn game. Like seriously it was just tooooo good. That feeling when your expectations are betrayed and you get something truly great  :kosame:
