Your Worst VN Experience

Oh god, my worst experience was definitely Remember 11.

I came to it after wading through a few more lighthearted things because I was craving a more substantial plot, but holy shit, that game is complete bullshit.

Seriously. In order to experience every ending (which is the only way to understand any of it, because the game really drops the ball when it comes to wrapping things up in the good endings alone) you have to play through one side of the game, get a specific bad ending, then play through the other side of the game to get an alternate version of the same bad ending. And there are so many of them. And the details you get from doing that are all so minuscule on their own that you're putting in a huge time investment and getting almost nothing out of it except an ever-so-slightly better view of the big picture.

And even after doing that, you still know almost nothing. It's so terrible. The good endings both end with major cliffhangers that you only even sort of understand if you've gotten a whole bunch of the bad endings prior to seeing them, and even then, they're still cliffhangers that don't wrap things up at all.

And I totally get the whole "it's supposed to make you feel like you're playing an infinite loop, that's why you have to play the game over and over again without learning anything new at all each time" thing, but that doesn't excuse the complete lack of resolution or explanation or story or really anything. Just because it's a unique idea doesn't make it a good one.

I regret putting any time into it at all.

Yea about that one, from what I heard writer wanted to make a latter version have a complete true ending but then he forgot what he wanted to write and just dropped it.

Monster Girl Quest.  I couldn't even get past the beginning of the "story" before I got disgusted with it and dropped it.  The art quality seemed random at times, fluctuating from extremely high quality sprites to things that looked like they were hastily made in Microsoft Paint.  The plot itself was laughable, at least what I saw of it before I dropped it.  Looked up a plot synopsis afterwards, and while the end was slightly surprising, it wasn't good enough to make me want to keep reading it.  I also thought the protag lacked a personality and was a bit of a tool.  No idea why the MGQ series is so hyped on VNDB.

Never doubt the power of fetishists. There are quite a few vore scenes in the series and vore fetishists are infamously fanatical. And monster girl fetishists aren't slouches either. It's surprising that this crowd would create well over a thousand votes on VNDB but they probably all came from deviantart to do it and there are a LOT of them there.

Monmusu Quest features the most satisfying conclusion in Videogame history and makes Dragon Age and Mass Effect look like total bitches. The quality of the script increases with reading time, I'd say the breaking point between "alibi-plot for porn" and "wait, that's actually good..." is around Poseidons Bell.

Luca actually receives a great deal of character development over the course of this series. One of his best scenes is unfortunately easily missed, because it's optional and a little hidden.

I understand why Monmusu Quest turns away people. Monstergirl-shota-reverserape-femdom probably isn't what most folks would consider average-everyday-porn. But I still managed to sit through it, because I was honestly engaged in the plot (and maybe also because I'm a sick pevert).

Never forget that soundtrack, it's great

But boy, do I agree with what you wrote about the sprites. Characters in this game were drawn by two different artists, as far as I remember. I guess the good artist was too expensive/busy/both to draw the entire game.

That is a shame, because great sections like Witchhunt village or Lady’s Village are somewhat ruined by horribadible art.

Well, while I greatly enjoyed 999 and Ever17, Remember11 and Never7 weren't that good. I really hate how vague Remember11 is; yet drops a lot of info in endings. Which still doesn't tell that much... The cherry on the top? It seems like even authors do not agree on Remember11 plot and endings. Never7 is quite old, and first game in Infinity series, so I did not expected too much... I really liked voice acting. I really hated how this VN sat on my computer for month or two, because I didn't had any idea why game didn't want to run. And, duh... there's too much attention on clearing some random girl route, instead of looking for answers and so on. The first impression is - wow, there's mystery, something to solve!- and after that, load of bishoujo crap :x

Rabid fanboys/fangirls are a little scary.  I mean, if you like something, that's great, but going to that level of obsession is a little much, in my opinion.

I haven't played Monmusu Quest, but I think any game's conclusion would be more satisfying than the disaster that happened with Mass Effect's ending xD

But the explosions are different colors!  What more could you want?!

Yeah...I couldn't even stick around long enough to find any of that.  The first impression I got from it was pretty bad, so I almost immediately dropped it.

Glad I'm not the only one that thought that some of the sprites and art in general was atrocious.  You'd think that they would've tried to get some slightly higher-quality sprites than that, but I guess not.

I can't really remember... because I tend to drop bad ones, never finishing them... or perhaps it was so bad, I just forgot about them. xD

If I managed to finish it, then I wouldn't really count it as the worst experience.

Oh... there have been ones I expected more from, and was disappointed. I liked the School Days anime more than the VN.  The characters all annoyed me as well, even more than the anime.  The H-scenes made me cringe too, I actually preferred to fast-forward through them.  And repeating scenes to re-do choices was also really annoying.  I was only able to get through it because I wanted the one girl to get a happy ending compared to the anime, lol (but even that was forgettable).

  • 1 month later...

...Whats with this evil eye thing?

Anyways, so far, none, though I heard from a friend one that sounds bad, not the VN itself though, but the main protagonist who ruins it by being basicly a rapist, that VN became a no go to me as soon as i heard that, unfortunaly I dont remeber its name =(

Is it Sengoku Rance? https://vndb.org/v487

Because Rance really doesn't ruin the game by being a selfish, rapist warrior. He's one of my favorite protagonists simply due to how hilarious he is. That being said, I will mention I was initially offput by said rape, but they don't use rape in a serious way, so it was bearable. The game itself is actually really fun.

Also, as for the original question....

I have trauma due to losing to Beelzebub in MGQ about 7 times. I... just.... :/

I've not had any truly bad experiences so far. The closest calls for me:

- Fate route from FSN, mostly just due to the incredibly sexist attitude

- HF route from FSN

- Comyu -- I love this game, but good god it moves at a glacial pace. I really want to stick with it, and want to know what happens to the characters, but it takes eons for anything to happen just due to the slow nature of the writing.

Yeah I was literally only playing Monster Quest for the H Scenes LMAO

and they werent even that good.

So I got bored and stopped.

That's Shirou as a whole, not just in Fate.  Sure, in some of the others it's not as apparent, but it's still there.  He's not exactly what you'd call a likable main character most of the time  :P

I can't believe Saber wasn't all over Shirou's dick since the beginning of Fate. He has a sense of chivalry that rivals just about anyone else. I believe it was fairly popular and preferred of men to think like that.

I don't think of it as sexism. I think of it as being born in the wrong time.

Nah, he's sexist. Unless you want to call his comments about Ayako in UBW "being born in the wrong time"... Besides, Saber is a warrior. He's holding a warrior back. It's obvious she's a warrior/knight first, servant second and woman in the chivalric sense last from her perspective.

Comments about Ayaka? You'll have to refresh me on those, as my original playthrough of UBW was quite some time ago, and I am not that far into the replay I have started.

Born in the wrong time? He wasn't born in 1910. Besides, misogyny is misogyny no matter when it takes place, regardless of whether or not the era makes it culturally acceptable. Anyways, call it whatever you want, I think many people can agree that he was simply obnoxious as hell in the Fate route.

...Or was it during Fate? It was during Fate.

Being nearly sexually assaulted will teach her to act more like a real woman! Type of thing.

On actual topic, I haven't found anything I outright hated yet... If I don't like it I drop it...

Wait what? Did he say that for real? I won't argue anything if that's the case.

Then again, I do treat Fate and the Deen adaption the same; as if they don't exist. Actually, I kinda prefer UBW over everything else, so that might be my problem. There was less time worrying about Saber and more time chanting about blades and works. :/

Oh well, I guess not every MC can treat woman as equally as the TouMAN.

Worst experience? Kamidori. Maybe I'm just too used to playing action-packed rpgs like Dragon Age or Skyrim. It was just painful to play. I die and forgot to save? Well slap my ass and call me sally, I have to waste 30min of my life to get back to the place I was!

It wasn't that infuriating actually though. Honestly, I'm exaggerating here. Kamidori is a great game. And the sense of achievement you get after clearing a level is greater than when you clear a boss in Dark Souls. I just dropped it because the boss fight ticked me off.
