I was really curious about it at that time I thought it was some anime  then found out it was a "game"

*I download it then read it and got depressed for 1 month

*Did some research about vns then found out that one of the writers took a lot of inspiration in narcissu to write Katawa shoujo so  I read it...1 week depressed and that's how everything started

I'm currently playing Katawa Shoujo right now. It's my second one. depressing you say? Im not readyyyyyy lol

I'm not 100% sure whether I played Sengoku Rance or read Yume Miru Kusuri first, but either way, I somehow stumbled upon those many years back. Read a few more VNs using machine translations, and then mostly nothing until I picked up first Kamidori Alchemy Meister, then Soukoku no Arterial a couple of years ago. Since I liked both, naturally I looked for more, and seeing as I was actually able to read Japanese by then, well, here I am.

It's not a depressing visual novel (it does have some pretty sad moments) but that's the effect it cause in almost everyone :P you will find out why xD

I had just watched the Higurashi anime and found out it had a "sequel" called Umineko which was something called a visual novel. I couldn't get it work at the time for some reason so I ended up playing Utawarerumono instead. It felt really nostalgic to replay the much better console version in japanese this year. Kind of made me feel like "Wow, has it really been 6 years since I last read this?".

Phoenix Wright was my first taste of something similar to visual novels. At the time it was just another adventure game. Well, to this day not many consider it an actual VN. My first true VN probably was Fate/Stay Night, and a year or so later DanganRonpa, I enjoyed both. I had previously watched the Steins;Gate anime and entertained the possibility of playing the fan patch but decided not to because I didn't yet feel like retreading that story.

But wait, there's more! I still had the notion that bishoujo VNs were all just boring dating sims. I also kind of looked down on romance as a genre in general. After watching some random romance anime I didn't hate, I was recommended the Clannad anime, and kind of became hooked. I thought I would hate it and ended up enjoying it far more than I ever expected. Realizing it was an adaptation of a VN, I decided to actually give bishoujo romance VNs a shot. I started with titles like Da Capo, Grisaia, and Deardrops, and the rest is history. It's actually kind of insane how many titles I read in my first three months after that, I was became an actual shut-in reading VNs for an embarrassing amount of time each day. I think I finished Grisaia in 5 days. I've calmed down a considerable amount since then, it would take me at least two weeks these days, lol.

edit: Did some rough calculations based on my VNDB votes, I must have played about 450 - 500 hours of VNs in my first two months. lol, what? IIRC, I would go to VNDB and sort the VNs by popularity and rating and just get everything on the top of the list. I also remember that I lost a bit of weight in that time period...

I think it was katawa shoujo. I remember searching for a medium with a nice plot that I would enjoy, that was longer than anime or movies, and since I do not mind reading at all, VNs were clear choice for me.

I use VNs mainly when I want to relax and enjoy the plot without having to wrack my nerves with gameplay of video games.

It is pretty sad I cant really recommend those games to any of my friends, because of the sex scenes. I fear they would have detrimental effect to people´s willingness to read them. Shame really, most VNs have better plot and presentations than any of the recent hollywood movies.

My cousin got me Grisaia no Kajitsu and said "You HAVE to play this!"

Aaaand yeah, that´s basically all it took. In retrospect it wasn't exactly the lightest novel to start with, but its still my favorite.

Though I was so depressed when I got the bad Makina ending. I wasn't quite sure how it worked then, so I thought that was the like, "real" ending. I was totally depressed a while afterwards.

I found out about Visual Novels on the now nonexistent Plot with Porn page on TvTropes (yeah I know, shut up). Thought the whole idea was bit ludicrous so naturally I had to check it out. I ended up really liking it. Read Private Nurse first which didn't really leave that much of a big impact on me but I didn't dislike it. I read Yume Miru Kusuri and KiraKira afterwards which is what really got me hooked. Been reading for several years now, though a bit infrequently so my VN list is still not that big.

I have to say judging by the comments above me it seems people are right and Katawa Shoujo really is the VN gateway drug.

I was randomly looking up bad endings of games on youtube and came across the School Days bad endings, and i was like "wtf kinda of game is this where that can happen", so i did more research and watched more youtube videos about that genre until i eventually read G-Senjou no Maou and Fate/Stay Night.

For me, it was kind of a natural progression as I got into anime. Over a year or so, I finally made the move from the 'infinite shounen' to shorter and actually complete anime, and Higurashi quickly became one of my favourite ones. I then randomly came across Umineko, and in my plebness I thought it was just some wannabe Higurashi on an island (still hurts remembering this D: ), but maybe because of that I looked into it enough to actually realise it was a visual novel first and foremost.

So I read the first episode unpatched, and then got involved with the UmiTweak team - and with that, I put Umineko on hold until it was patched and jumped head-first into the world of VNs. I don't quite remember which one was first exactly, but it was either Clannad, or Chaos;Head.

Ace Attorney was my first VN. It was when the internet meme rage was at its peak and people made a big deal out of the OBJECTION! thing from Ace attorney. I was like, wtf is so funny about this? I played the game and got hooked into visual novels instantly.

Then I visited Hongfire, anime sharing reddit and other visual novel sites, and slowly got hooked into more vn gemres particularly the NTR genre. Funny that my first NTR VN was The Sagara Family and the NTR was just a sub route in that game but just from that, I developed my fetish for NTR... After playing many of Elf's NTR VNs I knew this was my calling and my passion, to corrupt the poor fuwanovelians into liking NTR. :wahaha:

I consider myself a VN connoisseur since I am not just a NTR fan but many sorts of fetishes. I have over 800 VNs read so far. If you know something disgusting or horrendous fetish in VNs, I have probably seen it and almost nothing fazes me anymore. :holo:

For me i had always been watching anime since i was a kid, so i had an interest in Japanese works, but i had no idea visual novels actually existed until a few months ago.

i found out about visual novels when i was watching Gintama, there was an episode where Shinpachi was playing a dating simulator :P, i started googling 'dating simulators' and that introduced me to visual novels, my first vn was Katawa Shoujo, it;s still one of my favorites.

Let's see...it happened back when I was first starting out high school.  I was writing a fanfic (a crossover of some sort), and I was looking for someone to fill in a certain role.  I don't quite remember how, but I remember passing by a "Let's Play" of Fate/Stay Night: Heaven's Feel.  I read it, loved it to pieces, and then moved onto Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works.  I adored that as well, so I then proceeded to Fate/Stay Night.  And thus, I finished Fate/Stay Night in reverse chronological order.

I kinda just enjoyed reading as much as breathing. I mean, we all gotta take a break from the action, right? VNs just give you a sense of...life, a sense of being in the moment while at best not being too cheesy about it. It all started with me falling in love with books, then ultimately playing Invisible Apartment and Depression Quest(which helped me through my own depression episodes), then ultimately...Kotaku got me hocked with something so beautiful, so amazing, that even I fell in love with it instantly; like seeing your soulmate for the very first time. And this VN swept me away, brought me to tears most nights, and gave me a new appreciation to life and people around me in general...not to mention how I see disable girls nowadays. This masterpiece is none other than--Katawa Shoujo. With the soundtrack being as brilliant as the story behind it all, it is truly a masterpiece!

Hmm it is thanks to Clannad -> Rance and Youtube where I found Ever17. I saw Clannad the anime and was interested in it. I searched for it and accidentally found VNDB. I found Fuwa not long after that and got my games. But it was Sengoku Rance and Ever17 which was the games that dragged me into the VN franchise. Solid gameplay with strategy from Rance is a dream.

Ever17 was an awesome ride too. I found the game through a Dj Tiesto song (Titanic) which had a CG from Ever17 as picture. So playing Ever17 with Dj Tiesto - Titanic was interesting. But overall it was a great game. Not my game usually but it was intruding.
