Just finished Fate/ stay night [Spoilers]

Man, this one was a journey. Fate/ stay night is the longest visual novel I ever took to read. Taking over a year, while I read several games in between. At first I was turned off by the text covering the whole screen the entire game. the prologue didn't really get me hyped for anything, and magic seemed really complicated. And stupid. And the main character was weak sauce.

But then I got back into it, I don't know how, or why buy I started up again last week and I finished it today.

All of it.

At 4 in the morning.

I suddenly was captivated by the world, the characters and the way Shirou got stronger. From learning about Saber's past to Archer being the embodiment of Shirou's beliefs, to becoming part machine, part blade to stop a unbeatable dark force, your underclassman. And then the Tiger Dojos.

Oh my god the Tiger Dojos.

Now I've got a couple of questions for those who played the game and loved it. And also a question regarding certain unlocks...

So---

1.What is your favorite route? Is there a generally best considered or main route, or are there wars over which one is better?

2.Are the animes any good? The only thing I've heard of Fate/ stay night before playing the game was my friends discussing the anime.

3.Um... I think I am missing the opening video for Heavens Feel route... the movie section seems a bit barren with only two videos...

4.Also, is there suppose to be two normal endings for Heavens feel? I can't seem to get the second oneno matter how hard I try...help...

1. Heaven's Feel because of Illya and Sakura, and it's just a really great route. People tend to say the best route is either UBW or HF but I usually see a bit more of praise for HF. There's no real main route because of the second magic and the whole multiverse thing so it's all up to your tastes.

2. The most recent adaptation, Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, by Ufotable is a really great one and you should definitely watch it. Fate/Zero is basically a prequel and it tells the story of the 4th Holy Grail War - the one where Kiritsugu summoned Saber - which is a really amazing anime, also should watch it. The DEEN adaptation and movie are the ones you should avoid since you'll very likely dislike them. You can also watch Carnival Phantasm for some fun, just keep in mind that there'll also be content from Tsukihime in it.

3. Can't help with that, our versions might be different. Maybe try r/fatestaynight/.

4. The issue is probably with the Illya points. Here's the walkthrough from the forums, it'll explain things better.

Give me your honest answer please, didnt you hate emiya shirou most of the time? He is such a dislikable character..

1 Probably fate, because saber is such a badass.

2 The anime (I didnt finish it yet) looks actually good, the one that it is focus on infinite blade route.

3 Can't remember about the intro videos in fact when I see a video I skip it because most of the time they spoil big parts of the plot.

4 Can't remember the normal endings to be honest xD

1. a tie between UBW and HF, used to be HF but then i realized a lot of it sucked for me

2. from what i've watched of UBW anime, it has been cool so far. Fate/zero is also great

4. i think getting the normal end is making some choices to be close enough to like her but not too close if that makes any sense.

I feel like UBW is my favorite, it's a close run with HF but I liked the Shirou/Archer conflict enough to use it as inspiration for my own writing sometimes.  So it's obviously left an effect on me ^^;;

As for the anime thing, Rose's post sums it up quite nicely.

Damonkala, do you care if I suggest the Muv-Luv trilogy next?  The first game (Extra) isn't that good but the last one (Alternative) is easily as good as F/SN, though I haven't gotten to it myself ^^;;

1. Seems I like mix between UBW and HF. HF sucks because of some moments and generally I do not believe in that "romance" between the two. UBW is great because of Tohsaka and Archer, while HF have more realistic atmosphere (as really, all other paths were all too much fun for a REAL MAGIC WAR, do not you think?). So cannot choose between these. Saber route is the shortest and so much forced (yeah, you meet a boy, spend with him a week and love him till you die, and yeah, you're not from this time... no, never believe that. but last sex scene was the only one, where I could feel sort of romantic feeling between the two (as in all others Shirou was such an asshole, that I really hated him). So probably only that.

Actually my favorite ending is the bad Sakura ending (or how it is called, Cherry Blossoms Spring). That's the most believeable conclusion.

Deep Blue, yes, I also quite hate Shirou. Actually I quite hate all the male protagonists in all Type-Moon (well, I now mean Tsukihime only, as did not read Fate Extra).

3. Intro video you can easily find on YOutube... Heaven Feel Opening and you'll get all of them.

Oh my goodness, I've already read all of Muv-Luv and to me it's a work of art! Personally I prefer Muv-Luv (Alternative atleast) to F/SN, but at least Fate/ stay night didn't give me PTSD.

Oh, good to know!  :D

In that case, SubaHibi translation is on the 20th.  Keep an eye out for that in that case.  I'll be hopping on ASAP ^^;;

1. My favorite would have the be Unlimited Blade Works, while I do think that story-wise its the weakest, the interactions between Shriou and Archer, which is basically his corrupted ideals are very interesting to me. Also, Rin is my favorite, so, yeah.

2. The new anime Unlimited Blade Works is like visual porn, it's probably the most beautiful anime ever made, but its story is kind of weak and it focuses more on the beauty of the fight scenes, still a good watch. Fate/Zero is my favorite anime of all time, it just has everything that's needed to be an epic story, death, deception, love, betrayal, hate, etc. I would heavily recommend watching it, as it tells the story of the war 10 years ago, and focuses mostly on Kiritsugu, Shriou's dad, which is endlessly more bad ass then Shirou. The original FSN from 2006, just no, don't watch, horrible. (By the way, a movie for Heaven's Feel has been announced by the same company that did UBW and F/Z, so we can only hope it'll be a massive scale production like their earlier movies, and they show the beauty of Heaven's Feel. Still hope Sakura trips and dies though.)

3. Dunno

4. Walkthrough?

on the 20th?! That's a lot sooner than i thought. I'll have a new VN to read finally. The thing that does scare me though is that I've heard subahibi is very hard to read so kind of nervous of how the translation will be.

1) I cant really pick a 'favourite" route because I felt like each route built on to each other as a whole story.

3) It might be the difference between what versions you have depending if you have the realta nua version or not.

Unlimited Blade Works is my favorite, but I think Heaven's Feel is probably a better written route. I just found UBW more personally relatable.

I actually didn't dislike Shirou too much, aside from his occasional chauvinism that all VN protagonists seem to suffer from. "I helped you because you're a girl! Not because I would help any human being that was in danger! It's because you were born without a penis!" I hate that line of logic. And it's worse in Shirou's case because until a very specific point in the story, he isn't actually helpful in the least; his belief that he can somehow protect them is condescending to Saber and Tosaka in my opinion.

But I really liked how firm he was on his ideals and even his pushover-ness appealed to me on some level. I like an idealist protagonist, and can relate to the helping people who don't deserve your help kind of attitude, too.

I'm midway through the Unlimited Blade Works anime, and it's excellent. I've seen the sentiment expressed by some hardcore anime fans that they think it's only seen as good because of its high budget, but that's not the case at all. I think they're just mad that everyone is talking about it and are looking for ways to bring it down so that they can feel superior for liking less universally praised stuff. It's really a fantastic show, the fighting is excellent, the story is handled well, and it doesn't get things wrong, either.

I haven't seen Fate/Zero yet, but I absolutely plan to.

F/SN is one of my favorite VNs of all time, behind Tsukihime, which is a goddamned masterpiece.

Yeah, "Tohsaka's defenseless anus" and "Suppress Roa in my ass Shiki" is a goddamn masterpice, no doubt about it :) i think Tohno Shiki is on top list of protagonists I literally hate.

.

Actually show is a not as good, if you are not a fan of original VN. It is still visually stunning, but scenario itself is just Nasu's story and Nasu is not really good writer, if compare to others. Fate Zero is better in any possible way apart visuals, even that it have Nasu s characters. Friend of mine never read VN but he watched Zero and after it he was just "that's so boooring" about second season of UBW...

1) Heavens feel (though Rin is my favorite FSN girl). I do not accept "sacrifice one for the many" - at least when it comes to the Fate series. Be that self-sacrifice, or otherwise.

2) I reccomend watching everything that's come out so far, even the studio Deen t.v. version. (largely unpopular due poor adaptation) Fate/Zero, which is a prequel to the Story, and involves Emiya's late stepfather, and the new UBW series (while my least favorite story, still a great watch - UFOTable really knows what it's doing). And of course the Heavens Feel movie(s) once out :)

3) Not sure - sounds like you missing stuff though. Realta Nua version? Or the original version with Mirrormoons patch?

4)

one ending he lives, and the other he dies destroying the grail (it unlocks after you've seen the true ending - I suspect for those that wouldn't be satisfied with a survivors ending~)

Lol...I hear you loud and clear... I still can't bring myself to read it again  >_>

Ah, cool, the first post I post on these boards after being away for literal months is immediately met with someone making fun of me. Ah well, whatever. Tsukihime is actually fascinating in its structure and the points of view it forces you to look through are what makes that VN interesting. the whole point of the VN was to be filled with things that you hate and that suck. But I digress.

I fully disagree with you about the story not being good. It's not a fact that Nasu is not a good writer. It is an opinion, and I disagree strongly, which is why I find UBW to be such a good show. The world he has thought up is unique and interesting. The only place I can really fault these VNs is on the H content, because it's all terrible.

I fully disagree with your opinion, because the only good in these VNs is H-content, as it is so wildly hilarious :)

Actually no, I kinda liked Fate, and Tsukihime too, but they both have same flaws and these flaws are there because Nasu is really not good at story. He good at describing tons of unlimited cooking works, also he is good in fleshing out characters. But when it comes to thriller, drama and suspence - he lacks that. That's why Fate Zero is great - Urobuchi have usually great scenario, but feeble chars - here where Nasu helped.

My favorite route would be UBW, though HF is kinda close. I had some problems with HF, such as the way it killed off most of the Servants so early and... anticlimactically (seriously Gilgamesh, who was the final boss in the previous two routes, died so pathetically... same with other Servants like Caster, Assassin, and Lancer). I also didn't like HF's treatment of Saber: she's the noble mascot character, but she basically got no redemption throughout the route and stayed dark as Saber Alter until the end. You may argue that HF was supposed to be dark and edgy like that, but I just personally didn't like that particular development; I didn't want to end Fate/Stay Night with Saber still corrupted like that. And don't get me started on Shirou somehow managing to beat her... that just felt really contrived (with the help of Rider kinda, but still... also, Rider was a pretty lackluster character as well, she wasn't all that interesting. I had been hoping for some awesome mindblowing reveal about her - similar to Archer's - since she was the last Servant whose identity we hadn't known yet, but nope, she's just Medusa... and she didn't have much of a significant role in HF besides the fight with Saber Alter). Other issues I had included the rushed and underdeveloped Angra Mainyu plot point, Illya suddenly appearing at the end with the Heaven's Feel robe that got no explanation, and the anticlimactic end of the fight between Shirou and Kotomine (Kotomine just... stopped, cuz he was out of time, he said. Meh). Things that HF did well though, are its themes and the character development of the main people involved.

Edit: @Scorp, I don't think the overall characterization in F/SN is all that great, to be honest. Shinji is a laughable one-dimensional asshole all the way through. Assassin, Rider, and Kuzuki lack depth, Gilgamesh was entertaining, but he didn't get all that fleshed out either. Lancer was also funny, but he didn't get a lot of screen time in all 3 routes. I'd even say Caster was boring even with her backstory. That's part of the problem with F/SN; since all these Servants are former heroes, we already know their backstories (or if we don't, we can look them up), but for a fictional story, that shouldn't count as character development; if it did, it'd be lazy writing. That's why Archer is the best and most well-developed Servant; he's different from the rest because of his fleshed-out ideas and relationship with Shirou. Heck, UBW was Archer's route, not Rin's, so yeah. Moreover, random side characters like Mitsuzuri, Issei, and Taiga dropped out of the story soon enough, when they should've had some more importance in the story (especially Issei, he actually had some kind of relationship with Kuzuki, that could've been explored further); otherwise, why even bother creating them in the first place? The great characters were Shirou (though admittedly, he was pretty sexist and annoying in the Fate route, that was pretty bad), Illya, Sakura, Kotomine, Saber, Archer, and I guess Rin too maybe. I didn't really care about anyone else...

I actually agree on that, I told it is good comparing to Urobuchi, as that guy does not care about characters at all, all his characters are merely plot devices. Nasu is not a good writer, so he does not know, when he should stop in his tons of explanations or instead give more backstory on another char... But he still delivers, that's why Fate is so popular. He just need a good editor, who will tell him which part to remove and which part increase, that's what I think.

I haven't watched Fate/Zero yet unfortunately, though I know about some of the characters and what the ending is like. From what I've heard from most people though, they seem to really praise the character development in F/Z? Especially for, like, Kiritsugu. I can't say for sure though.

About Nasu needing an editor to cut down on the excessive exposition (take out some of those food scenes...), I can agree with that yeah.

1.What is your favorite route? Is there a generally best considered or main route, or are there wars over which one is better?
It seems as if generally Unlimited Blade Works is considered the best route although I personally like both Fate and Heaven's Feel as well. All the routes in the game I believe failed to really use the characters to their full potential. I feel as if all of the minor and side characters (including the other servants) simply did not get enough development and it did end up affecting the overall stories in a negative way. It's still a great game mind you but is definitely not without its flaws.

I would probably say my favorite route was Heaven's Feel which conflicts with the fact my favorite characters are Rin, Saber, and Kotomine. I personally feel as if HF had the best story even if it was a bit rushed towards the end. That said the most action was definitely in UBW and the fights were pretty enjoyable in the route overall.

If you've got nothing else to do you could always try Fate Hollow/Ataraxia generally people have mixed opinions on it but I personally found it enjoyable.

2.Are the animes any good? The only thing I've heard of Fate/ stay night before playing the game was my friends discussing the anime.

The Light Novel and the prequel anime Fate/Zero is pretty good but the original fate stay night anime has problems with mashing everything together and being created by Studio DEEN (known for bad adaptations and quality). The UBW film is flashy but no substance. UBW tv series has somewhat poor pacing in the second half but still enjoyable enough. I personally believe that the Heaven's Feel route would generally work best as an anime/movie to directly follow Fate/Zero...Generally though the shows are watchable but will vary in enjoyment based on personal tolerance and level of enjoyment.

To DEENs credit, I loved the music in their version far more then UFO's UBW series. (which confused me, as UFO had good music in Fate/Zero - wonder why they switched to so such a generic set of tracks in UBW? Obviously a handful of exceptions, but otherwise a forgettable soundtrack.)
