  • 2 weeks later...

Started playing VenusBlood Hollow International which is my first Venusblood game to play in the series. for an Visual Novel SRPG, the gameplay aspects of it is pretty deep and engaging! It even rival in terms of greatness to that of Rance Games!

Took 2 weeks for me in clearing the chaos route of the game and now playing on my second playthrough!

One of the best Visual Novel SPRG I ever played! Such a blast to play despite its difficulty hahahah! 😁

Since I caught covid at 7th November, I had almost six weeks long break in reading. Recently I finally almost fully recovered, and so I resumed reading Damekoi PSP.

Currently I'm at 13th chapter and going for (or actually already almost entered) Asami's route. While I had some complaints at the beginning of the game, it gets better and better as it goes, and as I got used to it.

I'm loving how the relationship between Osamu and Asami is portrayed, and I'm really rooting for them. Let's see how it unfolds.

Damn, it hit you hard, huh? Glad to hear you're back on track!

I haven't started any new VNs since my last post here. I'm basically just waiting for the White Album 2 translation to finish, which should be any day now according to the project updates. I really hope there won't be any delays, since I have time off from work until the second week of January, making this the perfect time to take on a longer read.

I also have WA2 on my backlog, but since I'm going for all-ages version (PS3), no translation for me ;)

Actually, when I think about it, recently I switched almost completely to playing VNs in Japanese. I never thought that would actually happen 😮 The last VN I read in English was World End Syndrome (because text-hooking from the Switch emulator was impossible back then) in February, and before that, Making Lovers in June 2020.

I have two weeks off starting next week (basically to the end of the year), but I don't think I will go with White Album 2 for my next read. First I have to finish Damekoi. And then, on the 24th of December Yuzusoft releases PC port of their all-ages version of Tenshin Ranman (previously available only for PSP) - and I think I will read either that or '&' - Sora no Mukou de Sakimasu you ni - (PS3 version).

I'm becoming more and more of an "All-ages junkie" ;) I'll read an eroge every now and then (when there's no good all-ages version available), but more often than not I find the H-scenes in eroges I read a turn off - either because they are just generic porn scenes featuring porn stunt doubles of the characters from the VN, or because of their jarring placement (or both :P )

Yeah, I get what you mean. Back when I started reading VNs, I read h-scenes in their entirety because I wouldn't want to risk missing out on anything story related, but there's usually nothing even remotely noteworthy in them so I just skip past most of them nowadays. I can imagine there being a few scenes that are worthwhile in White Album 2 though, so I might pay more attention there.

I got burned on previous Maruto's titles - especially by final h-scene in Folklore Jam, but I found scenes in Parfait or Kono Aozora ni Yakusoku o also to be rather detracting from the game's overall quality - all-ages versions were better and more consistent for me.

So while his character and relationship writing is great, I don't trust him on ero stuff :P In each case it felt like something added because "PC VN has to be eroge".

I think the main issue is that it's usually just straight up porn in most cases. If it's done right, sex scenes can add depth to characters and their relationships, but titles that manage to pull that off are pretty rare.

There are times where I don't mind them and they work really well as a relationship culmination or showing new facets of a character, but my pinky honestly is always cuddling the Ctrl button.

Anyways, Visual Novels! I have honestly not found too much time for regular Visual Novels (in the last... year), spending my time more with adjacent stuff like Ace Attorney (a lot... every game... including The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles) or Danganronpa.

However, I have been playing around with a couple of gameplay Eroge. Specifically, I replayed Re;Lord in order to move onto the finally, finally released Re;Lord 2. Still in the middle of the second game but my primary impression is... The action and fast paced clicking strains my wrist if I do it too long... I actually like the gameplay, I just can't control my clicking strength and strain when trying to play it well.
But in regards to the second game, I am so far pleased! They've opened up the gameplay scope, introducing an economy system and equipment to spend it on, as well as two new types of attack. Particularly good is that they changed the UI to make each unit strong or weak to certain types of attack. I'm satisfied with the current system if for the third game they decide to focus on plot rather than improving the system.

The other thing I am doing is replaying Venus Blood Frontier to really get the most out of it before trying to move on onto the latest title Ninetails localised. My first playthrough was on easy because learning all the systems... is a bit of a chore. And I stand by that. But with some external help, I'm chugging along to actually finish it on Normal semi-effectively. Thankfully, savescum and guide hell doesn't actually deter my sense of accomplishment at all, so I'll milk that feeling.

Also... On and off playing some Rance games. I did Rance 01 way back, and then did Rance Quest; the two recent releases which I'd never played before. Now I'll probably move on to replaying 02, and seeing if I consider III or IV (the only obstacles are game design, not graphics. They actually look decently... decent.). Anyway, on and off, I guess I'll just continue replaying this series on an infinite loop until Rance X releases in 2057.

This all said, I did play one actual, traditional Visual Novel: Smee's Harem Kingdom.
Now, the premise makes it seems like a nukige. Well, if it is, it has an awful lot of slice of life for one, and it bloody well is Smee funny, too. I must first of all praise the translation team, who have just the right touch of absolute bonkers that a Smee title needs in its language. Honestly, the real gold in this title is that because of the "harem" premise you get to see all the characters interact in every route, and that's absolute gold. It's also very funny self aware so, one of my favourite visual novels like Fureraba. Y3SfF5d.png

Finally, trying out Your Turn to Die which... isn't a Visual Novel, I guess, but here's a spoiler box. I'm still within the first chapter:

Spoiler

Initial Impressions (Up to first meeting with cast?):
In just the short segment I was pleased by the characters, as I tend to, but was worried about another aspect: mainly, the horror elements.
It's really, truly, absolutely not my thing.
It either scares me, or comes across as edgy to me, with all the flashy effects and purposefully exaggerated visuals.

Chapter One Part 1:
This segment showcased much better why I might love this game through its discussion system. There are few things I love more than discussions and votes around them, and the game seems to set itself up around them.
The Introductions using the UI were cool, and left me wanting to see how that UI might be used again further down the line.
Other than that, I can say I very much enjoyed the various screens and how we see the characters all over the room and interacting with them. It's an ingenious use of sprites, probably much more expensive to make than just not depicting them at all, but to me, it's very... nice, to see others alive and around in the enviornment.
And indeed, that leads to my next point regarding exploration, which is how this depiction truly does help make it feel like the other characters are doing things, and as I walk around, some of them have moved or see me around and talk to me and other such cool events.
This leads into a discussion and vote segment, and I'm there for it all the way! We hear characters express their opinions, we interject to get new information and clash statements so people discuss their differences and finally there's a clash of words where we refute statements. And so, having each discussed the issue, everyone votes, and I love seeing the results and how they might change! I will unabashedly be save scumming just to see how everyone might vote depending on how discussions go, even though I'll probably stick with a perfect (or my preferred, if the game uses the system to give me choices) vote. I can't wait to see how the system will be used to its fullest potential as the game goes on. Obviously I'd prefer if the system later on did lead to multiple real options, but I'd be satisfied if it simply had multiple loss scenarios and ways to influence folk.
Next, puzzles. What I've seen so far has been cool! Carefully exploring the environment, putting things together and figuring out solutions to quandaries. Particularly, the revolver puzzle was truly excellent. I never failed it, so I don't know what would happen if I accidentally killed someone, but I assume it would not progress the game (and also why the game only reveals Kai may be the stalker after this segment?). Anyhow, it was really fun thinking about how to set up the chamber in order to ascertain where in it you are in the least amount of wasted bullets so you can avoid shooting the others.
Now, within all these segments the main character sticks out in my ability to mould her and influence her actions, even though she also is herself. The game makes her out to be a relatively cool and clear-headed individual, and that's what I'm counting on since it's what I like to roleplay. I expect, though, that the game will force my hand for story purposes with me undertaking actions that I wouldn't simply because she has her own character. Understandable, of course. On a similar note, everyone so far has acted in a reasonable manner, and that always helps with immersing into these settings.
One final thing I would be remiss not to note is the music. Specifically, the exploration/investigation track, and the ones during discussions, which sound phenomenal to me.
After putting some effort into subverting our expectations of Professor Mishima, we are ultimately led into his entirely unavoidable death through a vote that everyone assumed to be practice. I was wary of the vote and specifically voted for the person I'd least mind being gone (Sou :P), but since three voted for Mishima, there's no way to avoid his fate.

Couldn't agree more! Harem Kingdom quickly became my favorite Smee title (well, actually, one of my favorite nukige altogether, to put things in a grander perspective) and this is one of the prime reasons. Another thing worth mentioning is the fact that all of the girls are or become pretty assertive, and that's always a big plus in my book.
Lastly, I also have to praise HIkari's vulgarity, which I find equal parts funny and refreshing, since it's something we rarely see in VNs, at least to this degree.

It's not weird. I mean when i read hscenes i do sometimes wonder if it was an adult who wrote this or a horny teenager who never had sex in his life. I'm gonna go with a nice mixture of those two. But as an adult, even if you had no sex you should know the grasp of things. Which begets the question: what the hell is wrong with the japanese hscene writers? It's not just hscenes, but their approach to sexuality in general. I played Drakengard 3 a couple of months ago and ohh boy does Yoko Taro have a childish approach to sex.

According to TV tropes most erotica writers are horny teenage girls ;) (although perhaps that doesn't apply to VNs)

Going back to the main topic...

Two days ago I finished DameKoi.

It didn't exactly WOW me, but still I consider it to be very good. I had a rough start with it - it took some time to get used to the format, but then it kind of gained traction, and from the third or fourth chapter onwards everything was ok.

I really liked the characters and dynamics between them - which seems to be one of Maruto's highlights. Heroines are one thing, but also side characters were very well done. I loved the trio of Mitoko's classmates - Matsuru, Rinko and Tsuyoshi. Three guys living at the house were also quite funny, and brought in some "Maison Ikkoku" anime mood :)

I did routes in the "ladder order", meaning Kaya -> Himeo -> Asami -> Mitoko.

Kaya was nice girl, and I enjoyed her route, even if it's clearly kind of "side" route. It wasn't anything special, but still nice.

However, in the beginning I couldn't possibly imagine how in the hell Himeo could become love interest for Osamu ;) Thumbs up for pulling this off :D Himeo turned out really lovely, although when it comes to blonde classic tsunderes, I still think her spiritual step-sister Katori Rea was even better ;) Nevertheless her love for both Osamu and Mitoko is something to see. It was also nice to see how she grew up.

Then there was Asami. I said it already, but I really loved how the game subtly shows the lingering feelings between her and Osamu and the intimacy they once shared as a married couple. If Mitoko's route wasn't as well done as it was, this would be perhaps my canon route - I really rooted for Asami and Osamu getting back together, since it was quite obvious they belong together - they just had to grow up to it.

Mitoko's route was a hell of a ride - a true rollercoaster, and well, considering the stormy nature of teenage feelings, and the mess this kind of love is, I consider it well done. It did pretty good job at portraying Osamu's and Mitoko's struggle with their own feelings.

I think it's good to play it last, since the "True" end unlocked after completing all other routes is actually the whole second (or rather third) part of the route, with quite significant portion of the story in it. Without it the route just kind of cuts off right in the middle.

As you might know, I played all-ages version, and I have to say that its only drawback was low resolution, since it was available only for PSP. Otherwise I loved it, especially since I found animated H-scenes from the Mangagamer's release and their placement totaly not to my taste. The scenes themselves looked like slightly polished-up scenes from flash-based porn games, and while that's what ultimately brought me to VNs, today I don't like that kind of sex scenes outside the nukige - and I don't consider Damekoi a fap fodder.

On the other hand, additional scenes in console release were great - they expanded the story, often were heartwarming or just funny, and the story had much better flow. I'd take them in a heartbeat over generic porn scenes. And according to the credits and cover, the PSP adaptation was also written by Maruto and Kikakuya group he's member of, so it all fits well.

Apart from the various scenes scattered over the whole story, the most significant additions are added or extended post-credits epilogues for heroines who didn't have them in adult version. There's also completely new epilogue for the whole game (continuing from Mitoko's true end, accessible from main menu after clearing all endings) - so PSP version has 7 endings in total.

That last epilogue is a bit similar to the "The Day I Found My Wings" from Flight Diary, since it's told from Mitoko's perspective.

Below under spoiler tags are CGs unique to PSP version:

8/10

Reading Sousaku Kanojo, https://vndb.org/v31136

I actually wrote a long review for this but I accidentally deleted it and it is now lost in history, and I don't want to type it again since i'm lazy and there are a lot of reviews for it out there considering it is a hyped game i guess with its production values. It was enjoyable but ironically for a game about "creators" or writers and the author making fun of cliche otaku developments, they do the same cliche otaku developments in the routes.

The aspect that makes this vn for me good is Kiriha, which should have been the main heroine since there was a lot of Kiriha content in the common route even moreso than Ayase the main heroine. A lot of things happen to the mc due to kiriha and kiriha is in turn changed which is good but bad for the main heroine Ayase since she's a bit overshadowed and if you headover to vndb reviews a lot of them just tell you to read Kiriha's route which is what I would say too. She's a modern tsundere and sometimes an asshole but a cold and pragmatic person which is not the kind of tsundere you usually see in charages. Usually in charages, tsunderes are emotionally driven but Kiriha is pragmatic and calculating in achieving dream, this aspect isn't totally lost in her route too.

Also the game really likes to shove the word "creator" on you. It's always "This is what a creater will do" or "as a creator" and the plot does sometimes touch upon the theme it is trying to say which is "How much are you willing to sacrifice to be a creator" which is a weird theme to be trying to do since it is out of place in this rather happy go lucky but sometimes melodramatic vn. Meikei no Lupercalia did that sacrifice thing a lot better since the game really took it seriously and built on it but it felt kinda cheap in Sousaku no Kanojo where the serious stuff it's trying to do is not given too much attention making it look like the writer trying to make a story that is out of his depth.

I say a lof of shit about sousaku but I did enjoy it a lot it has a strong common route, and entertaining cast of heroines, but this is just a high quality (production-wise) charage, there's no tragic depth here or something. There is tragedy but it felt cheap.

Today I started PS3 version of '&' - Sora no Mukou de Sakimasu you ni - .

I played for 3 hours so far (I'm still in the prologue), but I'm loving what I've seen up to now. It looks beautiful, the music is great and characters are, how to say it... it's all engaging right from the start, at least for me.

Initially I chose this game because of "reuniting childhood friends with a bit of supernatural thrown in" premise - a bit like Amber Quartz which I loved. According to vndb's plot summary it also seems to feature some kind of "artifacts", so that brings 9 -nine- to mind. Nice combo, if you like such things, that is :)

As for the minor things - I really like the look of font this VN uses.

And group of friends in flashbacks! ;) (It's right from the prologue, so it shouldn't be that big of a spoiler)

Well a certain people would surely malding about the mosaic, although obviously the joke won't work if the mosaic was removed in that CG lol (If someone interested to officially localized & here). Anyway weird title aside I like the opening song (The Moon is Not Alone) that was sang by Kanako Itou there. Also there're several nice CG from Damekoi PSP, although obviously Mangagamer can't easily add the CG into their version for legal reason (And it would delay the release a bit further).

As for the title (It's 'What are you playing' for the info), well I tried several recently released gameplay VNs (Dohna Dohna, Yamizome Revenger, and Hollow) with I'm planned to make the unique Talent as the main source of income in Dohna Dohna (The gameplay is sell the Talent in that it's the nice word for prostitute). I need to relearn Hollow's gameplay though because it's been a while since I play Frontier and it has some difference when it come to deploy the army. It also has some difference when it come to corrupt/approaching the heroines in which instead of waiting several turned now you can only do it after the current campaign ended, so no corrupts the heroines before attacking the first territory in each campaign.

Of course, the mosaic is the whole point of this gag :D (There's normal version shown before, and then mosaic gets introduced, and Kou's thoughts wander into dangerous direction ;) )

It would be nice if they did the same thing as with Princess Evangile - release port of console version as an separate all-ages edition.

Or actually they can do what White Album 2 translation team did in that they add PS3 CG into the patch, although perhaps it would be too much bothersome for Mangagamer there (That, and probably Valve would likely has several problem if Mangagamer did attempt to release PSP port into Steam thanks to the premise despite the absence of sex scenes).

Yeah, because those are not just CGs but whole scenes. And it could also pose licensing problem, since PSP version has different voice for Himeo (and much better one actually ;) ). That's why I suggested separate edition, like with Princess Evangile.

********************************************************************

As for my current read -  '&' - Sora no Mukou de Sakimasu you ni -

Yesterday I reached the OP, and I think this was the end of common route. So far this VN is great. I see lots of parallels to Nine, and I wonder if Nine's writer was inspired by it, or if both games have common source so to speak.

Also yesterday I encountered kind-of easter egg - when Kuichirou was giving names to the "artifacts", for some he used names taken either from mythology or fantasy.

For example, four of those names were taken from Tolkien's books:

Spoiler
  • Urara's bell has been named Ringil - I guess because of the "ring" part ;) Originally Ringil was Fingolfin's sword he used when he fought Morgoth.
  • Yae's block of chalk has been named Elessar - and I have no idea why :P "Elessar" is Aragorn's elvish name.
  • Maki's walking stick has been named Grond. That's actually pretty clever. Grond was Morgoth's warhammer, and he used it in the duel with Fingolfin. And in the past Maki has been always quarreling with Urara, so to name their respective artifacts with the names of two enemies' weapons is quite amusing idea.
  • The gloves were named Kamlost - it means "empty handed", and it's Beren's nickname he gave to himself when he lost the Silmaril.

There are two options. Either comyu is really written in such way or the translation is shit.

Since it has been translated by ixrec, both are equally possible 😛

I've heard somewhere that the style of the writers responsible both for comyu and for "And" can be hard, but so far the japanese used in And seems pretty normal to me most of the time.

Well who knows in regard of Comyu there, although if anything else at least one should have easier time to understand Hello Lady if the problem in Comyu is indeed because of Ixrec because Hello Lady here has different translator, and yes Hello Lady will be released by Nekonyan at January later if all goes well.

For the artifacts, perhaps Kazuki Fumi here may be inspired by And seeing that the writer here is quite experienced with writing chuunige, and two of their (Yes there's two writer that write And here) other works are the aforementioned Comyu and Hello Lady. The writer also continuing the usage of literature theme naming in Hello Lady, although as for what's the literature I'll leave it to you to find out. If anything else, at least you can play Hello Lady Steam version later if you prefer to read it without the sex scenes.

Yes, I'm definitely going to pick up Hello Lady as well. And it seems that NekoNyan's edition will also include Japanese text, so that's nice :)

Yesterday I finished first route in And.

I loved it, and I think anyone who liked Nine would also like And. It's like Nine, but with group of childhood friends - there's also a bit of Little Busters' mood there. I'm looking forward to other routes :)

Apart from childhood friends theme, the other difference is that And is (even) less focused on romance than Nine.

As for sex scenes, it seems that, at least for Riko's route that I finished, console version just skips the sex scene itself, but the scenario isn't rewritten, and so characters are having sex, just off screen. BTW in the PC version of And H-scenes are marked by the momentary blackout and textbox changing color from blue to pink - and then another blackout at the end. So the all-ages version just skips the part between the two blackouts ;)
