It seems that we have similar impressions about heroines. And yeah - if the route gets unexpectedly short it means you triggered normal ending ;) I don't know how it is for remake, but in original version, on the final map movement screen (on Christmas Eve) it indicated wheter you're entering "normal" or "true" route. In case of Rea's and Yui's routes, the difference between those two is one choice - to trigger true route for both heroines you have to choose Yui on 11/23. Here's the walkthrough

Yeah I really had to do a walkthrough just to be able to see the true end. Somehow I think that people who don't use a walkthrough will always get normal ends since who would have thought you needed to choose another heroine for the other heroine you want lol.

Ema's and Rikako's routes are great, and perhaps it's Rikako's route having the most of the drama. Anyway I'd recommend reading her route last (I'm not entirely sure, but it seems that it might even be somehow locked until you complete Ema's route and Rikako's normal end)

Yeah I think its actually locked, after I finish reading Yui and Rea Ill head straight into Ema and then Rikako, and then I'm done with the game. BTW, who was your favorite heroine(s)? for curiosity sake

I think Rea and Yui. Rikako had perhaps the best and most fleshed-out route, but I think my best girl after all was cute tsundere Rea :) So perhaps it would be something like Rea=Yui>Rikako=Ema>Asuka>Kasuri. I'm not sure where to position Mizuna and Mio - I liked their routes, but they were kind of different thing. And besides, they are absent from the edition you're reading, right? ;)

So, to sum it up - my favorite heroine was Rea, and my favorite ending was Rikako's true end.

I just spotted kind of easter egg in Princess Evangile - I noticed it only now, when playing Japanese version. There are two places - in English version it's "Papattore Moon Rock" restaurant and "Tsukiishi Shrine". In Japanese "Moon Rock" part of restaurant name is 月の石 (Tsuki no Ishi) while "Tsukiishi" is of course just 月石 - and both could also be translated as... yes, you guessed it - Moonstone :D

Came back to playing VN's again randomly after a long hiatus and played Parfait Remake.

Holy crap I expected this game to be longer, I felt so unsatisfied by the length because I seriously liked the heroines a lot, like I wanted to see a lot more of them. Its literally just navigating the map system and triggering events and then you can lock in a heroine after a few weeks of ingame time, and then the relationship forms, h-scene, and then an ending shortly thereafter. Why was it short and why was Katori Rea so perfect, rarely do I praise tsunderes a lot as they can be easily mishandled by a bad writer and make me hate the trope but Rea was just the perfect balance of tsun and dere, and her tsun isn't so annoying like most other tsunderes that make you want to bash their head in, Rea's tsun is just so cute, and you can actually see her getting softer and softer overtime and it melts my heart out.

The game is actually quite good in of itself, It does everything well, it's a good light-hearted romcom and doesn't stray too far from it but I only finished Rea's route so far and some people have said that the other routes are quite dramatic, but I'll read them again when I have the time since I am still in the "why was the route so short" phase. I need more good tsundere content in my life lol, I really love it when it is well executed.

Well aside from my Rea praising rants, I'll offer some thoughts on the other parts of the game

The heroines are all good but maybe this is just personal taste but some of them are a bit lacking or maybe because I wasn't as invested in them, particularly Asuka at Kasuri. Asuka seems to just throw herself at the MC and she really has an obvious crush on the MC and Kasuri just lukes the kind of charm that would make me try to go into her route.

I also really like Yui, I normally don't like air headed heroines but there's just something about her that's really cute and kinda grips your heart and the best part about her is that her character likes to sing a lot, she sings while working and it's often emphasized by the narration on how good she is and she does actually sing in the game a lot. The VA actually sounds like she's having fun singing, so its really endearing, unlike other VNs in which if a heroine sings, they just kinda gloss over it without the heroine actually singing and just said "she sang". Bruh let us hear the singing.

Rikako and Ema seems to be what other fans consider the true route considering that both of them are the ones most obviously connected to the MC's past and both are fascinating, particularly Ema. Ema is route I am also most interested for, considering her personality and how unique her situation with the MC is in VN stories. Particularly she is the ex of the MC's dead brother so she is her sister in law, and both the MC and Ema might care a little too much for each other. I don't know maybe there is some unique circumstance about it but I was also intrigued because in VN's some people have a weird obsession with their heroines being pure.

The story remains light and while there maybe some elements of drama present, it doesn't take itself too seriosuly with too much drama and just kinda plops the drama with a short resolution and i'm fine with that. (Note that I have only played Rea route lol)

Edit: I was on the normal ending of Rea not the true, wtf that was why it was so short, goddamn map navigation system

Playing Parfait Remake and finished Yui and Ema route

I really like Yui, her voice and personality is awesome, but I ended up stalling her route halfway near the end because I just don't like that kind of conflicts lol. I really wasn't interested in the plot going forward in her route which I dropped but yeah it was kinda sad because I really liked the first half as Yui is so cute but damn I was bored with the plot in her route.

Ema was kind of the reverse, I liked her character but not that much, I ended up liking her route and character a lot due to the drama(which was kinda light but still more dramatic than Yui and Rea). Ema has a unique background I was really interested in, which was being an ex-wife of the MC's dead brother. It really was one of a kind of character background and I really like backgrounds like that since it gives Ema and the MC with character depth that is rarely explored in vn's. Ema definitely isn't a saint and has done a lot of morally dubious but human decisions in the past and in the route, and I liked her for being a good and flawed heroine. Of course, her route explores the dynamic behind their relationship well, but let's say it wasn't explored seriously enough but that isn't just unique to her route but the whole game where the routes felt short. (More best tsundere rea where?)

Otw to Rikako route and I seriously didn't like her a lot, not that I hated her, but nothing seemed to be of much interest but her relationship with the MC is also explored in Ema's route, which gave depth to Rikako and that gave me a lot of interest toward her character. It is kinda weird that there is some kind of set-up where the game obviously points to Rikako being the true route.

It is also obvious that most of Parfait's story and serious stuff is in Ema and Rikako considering that they deal with the problems in the past.

Yui and Rea are bundled together and admitedly there was some real lazy writing here with the shared events. There is some kind of love triangle that was present in both their routes, but was only emphasized by Rea's route and mostly absent in Yui's route. One scene in particular was kinda lazy writing in which the shared event was Rikako asks you at the end of the day which do you really like Yui or Rea? This event happens right after you have sex with one of the heroines and confess, but the MC just goes "..." why the hell didn't you answer MC wtf, you just confessed and had sex, and you're telling me you're unsure. The text is the same no matter what route you are, so it is lazy writing choice.

I'm writing this half- asleep lol finished Ema's route before I sleep since idk when my motivation to read will also randomly disappear and I may leave parfait stalled without completing the routes, hopefully I'll finish Rikako's route tomorrow or this week and enter a reading hiatus again for a month lol.

That's why sex right after confession is bad trope :D

Yep, I had the same feelings. Game repeatedly suggested that MC and Rikako share some (troubled) past, but as a heroine she didn't seem that interesting, especially compared to Rea :D But the actual route was amazing.

Finally, finished Parfait, I'm just going to ignore Asuka and Kasuri. Finished Rikako's route and in short, her route is probably the most memorable, while Rea's character is the most memorable for me. Rea is probably going to be one of my favorite tsunderes in VN's and probably how I would go define good tsunderes, her tsun isn't that tsun that it kinda makes you think she actually despises you, just the right amount of tsun that makes you think she doesn't mean anything malicious by it and most of the time her being tsun makes sense and helps the MC, and why the hell am I suddenly praising Rea when this post was supposed to be about Rikako lol, I'm just writing down a stream of consciousness.

Rikako's route is what I consider the true route, but more exactly the route where the most story and effort was probably put into. Honestly, it is kinda weird that Rikako's route doesn't require Ema's route to be finished. I think a lot of the enjoyment would be diminished if you didn't know what happened with Ema and the MC in the past, which only Ema's route explained. You could probably only rely on context clues to know what happened between Ema and the MC, and what happened there is very, very relevant in Rikako's route.

My thoughts on the route was that I really did like it a lot, it was kinda refreshing seeing the MC working hard towards the relationship to work because Rikako has a lot of problems that needs to be solved before they can be together and the MC did that a lot. It was really different where the MC wasn't so clearly defined and was more like a self-insert in Yui and Rea's route. Rikako's a good heroine that has a lot going on for her and against her which is kinda hard to talk about without spoiling the whole thing since its a main plot point too in her route being the mystery.

All in all Parfait is a good vn, not perfect, it still has a lot of flaws that I'm not sure if it's just unrefined Maruto writing or production limits. Game felt short for me, it did kind of gloss over some scenes where it could have been further expanded or scenes where it should have been shown because there are scenes where they just kind of skip over it and just tell it happened.

Also fuck map-type choice VN's lol, It's fine but if you put specific flags to trigger the true ending or other flags to reach the end you want, and it isn't intuitive and easy to understand, it's a bad design choice. How tf was i supposed to know you needed to hang out with Yui in that specific day to reach Rea's true end.

Probably my next VN is , probably https://vndb.org/v18145 or when Muramasa gets released in EN. But idk, I'm always open to recommendations and random novels but I'm probably not going to read again for a few weeks, I only read Parfait because it was Maruto.

It seems that they fixed it in all-ages version. There, if you enter Rikako's true route without completing others (especially Ema's true, and Rikako's normal, that is kind of a glimpse or foreshadowing of true ending) you get bad ending:

Spoiler

The route ends prematurely after the breakup - Rikako leaves, and MC gets depressed.

Apparently they wasted too much time and budget on h-scenes :P In the all-ages version the story got expanded a bit here and there, and with the porn interludes removed it felt perhaps more coherent, but still there could be more.

I guess that's my main gripe with h-scenes in this title. Like I mentioned in my pseudo-review - when reading all-ages edition I thought, that perhaps a little bit of H wouldn't hurt. But sadly the scenes are IMO very badly placed and they feel exactly like porn interludes starring the MC and chosen heroine - they follow common porn/hentai cliches and tropes too much. To put it in other words - those aren't MC and his girl making love to each other, but MC and his girl performing a porn scene. The distinction might be weird, but that's how I felt about it. There were some VNs I've read where I didn't feel this disconnection, or it wasn't as pronounced - but there aren't many of them...

+1000, I hate that system too. At least in non-remake versions, you get the flowchart, where each event is marked and after you complete the route, it also lists all conditions connected with it - such as "this event is neccessary to get X route, and to unlock it you have to first see event Z" etc.

However my dislike for map movement taken to the extreme like in this game (and other GIGA's titles written by Maruto, such as Parfait's prequel Curio or Kono Aozora ni Yakusoku o) is based on the fact that it makes common route extremely fragmented, and kind of DIY thing ;) The obscurity of conditions itself doesn't bother me that much, because, taught by past experience, I always play VN's with a walkthrough on hand ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

I noticed interesting thing while playing PSP version of Princess Evangile using emulator.

It seems, that some of the CGs (just a few) are stored in their original resolution - and when emulator is set up to render in double resolution, they actually show up in that higher res. But it's just a few frames - often even then next frame of the same CG is downscaled to PSP's native resolution. Have a look on those two pictures below. The first one is the "upscaled" frame, while the second one is the next frame, in PSP resolution. PPSSPP is set up for double resolution:
(they are the pictures from the middle part of Ayaka's route - one of the scenes with Kayoko)

If memory serves, another such "upscaled" CG was first frame of the first meeting with Ruriko in common route.

And so I just finished my third reading of Princess Evangile - for the first time in Japanese (PSP version).

It was still great fun, and very nostalgic experience - like coming to see old friends again.

Ritsuko is still the best girl, and Ayaka has the best route - that hasn't changed :)

One could perhaps say that I'm almost as naive as the girls from Vincennes, and that's why I love this game, but whatever - I loved it despite reading it for the third time. It's actually interesting experience, because when you know some twists, sometimes earlier scenes appear in different light, or you can see some subtle foreshadowing.

I can to some extent agree with those that criticize the story for the fact that "villains" gain their "redemption" too easily - but this story is, for me at least, kind of fairy tale, so I can forgive that. And besides, the scene of

Spoiler

reconcilliation between Ayaka and her mother

still squeezed a few tears from my naive eyes :)

Also, this is perhaps one of the best done "All Ages" (actually +15) versions I've ever played. I wrote more about that aspect in my previous post, after my second play through in December 2018 ;)

So, to sum it up, it's still 8.5/10 VN for me :abilove:.  And it definitely become my "Comfort VN" ;)

Now I'm probably going to try Parquet.

As planned, yesterday I started reading Parquet.

I'm now in the Chapter 3-2, and so far I find it very enjoyable. Both heroines and side characters are nice, and I quickly got along with them :) There's also right balance between main story and SoL stuff, at least for me. The premise itself is also interesting.

But I think I can see how it might be difficult to find target audience for this title, and why it might disappoint many readers. First, it isn't exactly typical modern Yuzusoft game (which means moege with quite prominent ero content), so die-hard Yuzusoft fans might frown upon it. Hardcore Sci-Fi/Cyberpunk fans also won't be satisfied, since to some extent the premise is used just as an excuse to tell the story - so there definitely are some "unrealistic" / "unscientific" things going on in there. I think in that regard it's similar to ATRI.

Nevertheless I find it quite engaging.

I got Steam edition, but I'm playing it in Japanese - it's very nice that it is included :) Of course that means that my speed is much slower - currently I have 9 hours on the Steam clock - while apparently with normal reading speed I should have it completed by that time ;) But OTOH I must admit, that while part of it is of course due to looking up unknown words and parsing the text, I recently also just enjoy the slower pace while reading. Especially when it comes to narration or protagonist's internal monologue - I sometimes will stop at a line for a moment even when I don't need to check it up - just to think a little about it or to soak in the atmosphere.

And, while we're at atmosphere - I find both music and art very nice and enjoyable :)

Taking a break from MAMIYA and playing Togainu no Chi. Just finished Rin's route and honestly I really didn't like him at first but now he's my favorite, lol. I really enjoyed his route. I really wanted to like Keisuke's but it kinda just fell flat imo. Ended up not liking Keisuke that much in the end.

Mbn to be able to re-read VNs; I apparently red Princess Evangile like 6 years ago and gave it a solid 8 and it was definitely at the time one of my favorite charamoeges. Recently I tried re-reading like Little Busters! and Grisaia no Kajitsu, both of which are literally like my second and third VNs, but nope I remember just barely enough that they're both completely a drag for me to even bother continuing 😪

Over the past month I finished the otome Bustafellows. I ended up giving it an 8.5/10, so same rating as what I gave for the likes of Code;Realize and CollarxMalice. But I think I enjoyed Bustafellows a bit more than those two, so maybe 8.75/10? LOL But VNDB doesn't allow such a blasphemy partial rating oh wells

What makes Bustafellows so stellar is if you particularly enjoy a cast that has superb camaraderie, friendship, familial bond etc with each other. Bustafellows is ALL about that life. The setting of New Sieg (fictional modern US) with its corruption-behind-the-scenes and band of five heroes each having their own place in society + heroine protagonist all living under the same roof banding together to do vigilante work just allows for many funtimes.

H0YtxZa.jpg

What a solemn group picture LOL

Every Hero route will have the protagonist-heroine Teuta meddle with his private affairs, eventually culminating in them falling in love along with the other Heroes stepping in with the "Yo, we're bro's, let us help you out!" to resolve the conflicts. It's a good way to make use of all the characters without doing the whole out of focus thing.

jDuaKZE.jpg

1iFkzRV.jpg

YO, BRO'S BEFORE HO'S

Teuta herself is one of the more vibrant heroine-protagonists I've had the pleasure of reading. I don't even remember Ichika's or Cardia's personalities- I think they were stoic and realistic, or whatever genericness that allowed the reader to self-insert better. Teuta's strong willed, positive, and speaks her mind. She's also FULLY VOICED, can you believe that? At first it was off-putting for me- usually I don't like my protagonists voiced because it slows down my reading and whatnot- but at the end of the day having Teuta voiced for Bustafellows with all of her emotions ended up enhancing the narrative experience so much more than if I were to just use whatever headcanon voice I conjured up for her.

The romance is exquisite. Teuta conforms to her Hero of choice EXTREMELY well it's almost shocking how "made for each other" Teuta is able to be with each Hero, vs. some other VNs where sometimes you just laugh at how quickly and abruptly some pairings get together. It's probably partly because it was by design here- a majority of the Hero route flags are triggered by a 'personality' test Teuta takes during the common route and so yeah, the pairs do naturally end up having much in common.

~~
There's plenty of supporting cast as well that adds to the one-big-happy-family-that-has-each-others'-backs theme. Teuta in particular has two lifelong childhood friends Luka and Adam who will make sporadic appearances throughout your time with Bustafellows and they're always a treat to see because you just know whenever they pop up that they'll take care of Teuta. She really is the central pillar that joins everyone together in this VN.

X1XoPKV.jpg

nl6EeL6.jpg

BLSyGpq.jpg

Luka and Adam are probably some of the best side support characters I've had the pleasure of reading. Their "lifelong friend" status really made me appreciate them.

And so, you may want to avoid stumbling into some of the bad ends. Overall they're pretty mild, but some can get JARRINGLY dark. Teuta's a great protagonist, and everyone loves her, but she's not invincible 💀

Yesterday I finished Parquet. (It took me 19 hours)

It was better than I expected. It had some flaws, like some pacing issues and a bit anticlimactic/underdeveloped "showdown" with the antagonist. And I think those two are connected - the shift from SoL and investigation to the action was a little too sudden - it wouldn't hurt to stretch it over a few more scenes. But then it turned out that it wasn't meant to be the finale of the story

Spoiler

dr. Hashihime was just a kind of a mini-boss ;)

, and the equally important part, focused directly on relationship between two heroines (Rino and Tsubasa) starts from there, so I can forgive that.

Rino and Tsubasa are both cute and charming in their own way, even though they are different like night and day ;) I especially liked shy and somewhat cold Rino, and how she gradually warmed up.

The ending, at least for me, was very emotional, and as heartwarming as only the best moeges get - even though Parquet isn't focused on romance at all. :abilove:The short afterstories with brief branch for each girl showing a hint of a budding love were also cute and fun, but they were just an addition - more like a teaser for a fandisc, or as if the whole VN was just a common route of something bigger ;)

Reading some other reviews I often saw that people complain about protagonist being too "wooden" and lacking personality. I didn't have that impression, but I was reading Japanese version. I briefly checked the translation for a few scenes - and to me it seems like some of the MC's personality might have been lost in translation. Somehow in English version he feels much more hollow than in Japanese. But then it's also possible that my Japanese simply sucks, and I read the things that weren't there or misread some nuances :P

So, to sum it up - gorgeous art and music, engaging story and cast of characters, heartwarming ending - that's an 8/10 in my book.

EDIT:

This review posted on r/vn describes nicely the problems I had with the "showdown" part:

https://old.reddit.com/r/visualnovels/comments/pg0nzh/what_are_you_reading_sep_1/hc0l5o4/

Although I disagree about the protagonist ;)

Today my physical copy of 9 -nine- Complete Edition should finally arrive, so perhaps this is going to be my next read.

If you set up translation you can actually read the fandisc also. Translation will be far from perfect, but will be overall very accurate and little nuanced with some quirks here and there due to processing errors. I read tsujidou san fandisc like that and it was quite alright to read and i understood almost everything.
