The truth is, most vn's and eroge belong to the first group, hence the design choices that often neglect or entirely skip showing protagonists on the screen. I'm not talking even talking about moege or games focused on dating, since kissing there is a must so you'll have at least a single gratuitous cg somewhere. Love is not just about kissing, or sex. As much as physical contact is shown on-screen, What these games often fail to portray is an actual, realistic approach to relationships - both with joys and hardships of feeling something profound towards another live being; at most these relationships between characters feel incedibly shallow and artificial. Some people would rather imagine that the heroine is kissing them than the protag, and they're pandering to that. If you don't do that nowadays, at least a few times, it seems to be considered strange. I do that. But you see, I tried very hard to insert myself at those times and it was always unsuccessful. My brain can't understand that is a kiss. Know how it works? When the protagonist is similar to me, or I find it easier to self insert, then they show a proper kiss CG. Like Kotarou from Rewrite. (I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad they did that in Lucia's route and I'm waiting anxiously for the french kiss in the fandisc!) Also regarding the whole topic of kiss cgs it's import to remember most VNs don't simply have the luxury of throwing in CGs left and right, and somewhat reserve them for special scenes. Kiss CGs do exist, but most of the time they'll just have to put it in the regular character sprite so they don't have to draw up an entire CG every time the MC kisses a girl. Sometimes you only see their dick, sometimes you don't even see that, and a lot of the time you'll just see their back or side, with them in the corner of the screen while the girl is front and center. Basically, this and also the kissing thing is all because most VNs are pornographic eroge and the customer base likes to fap to the fantasy of themselves in these situations. If a story isn't meant to be fapped to, you're more likely to clearly see both partners kissing. Which makes me believe Eroges are fairly redundant, although one would agree that sex is a fairly important point of romance. I dunno, I have always felt like I was watching the unfolding story of a group of people, rather than self inserting myself into the story. Self insertion is inheritently bad and woe be to those who have their lines between reality and fiction distorted. I couldn't agree more with you. Romance IRL isn't worth reading/watching. As for the kiss Cgs - I think at "least" one CG should be provided for every route - unless the reader is a complete and total boor and lacks any sort of emotional connection, a kiss is a literal embodiment of affection and love. A bond between the two. But that is also subjective opinion I guess. For myself - a kiss is a very personal and symbolic thing - far deeper and meaningful then any amount of sex (though we could also get into the subject of "making love" versus "sex"). Plus, there is a huge difference between just casually kissing and "that one important kiss". a decent example being what Sarabeara posted above me. I "would" go for the virginity thing as another expression of closeness, if most VNs didn't turn the protag into a total pornstar during it I can only think of Masaya during Rise's route as being a relativly non-pornstar hscene. Call me strange - but if the mc is a virgin, I find it just a bit less silly and a little more touching when they are both obviously new to it and just sort of fumble through the motions - being rookies together and accepting that about the otehr is another type of acceptance. It's true that most do have a kiss scene - but typically the protag is off screen, and the dev assumes the reader is projecting themselves as the MC. Personally, I'm the sort of reader that watches from the sidelines, I'm happy just to see the protag get along with whomever - I don't need the heroine pointing her lips at the screen, at least not for "that one important kiss" I'd rather see the two kissing, instead of her kissing my tv screen. If a NTR VN like Dark Blue can pull off romantic kissing scenes like this, then anything that's not moege, nukige, or any kind of -ge that doesn't do self insertion/date sim should be able to pull it off. Oh, and if you add some breast fondling or fingering during the kiss scene, it is actually unbelievably hot imo. Although this is probably only 1 of the 3 romantic scenes in the game.
