With a properly written VN the relationships with different characters take on a different meaning depending on whether they're your current route or not and to get the most out of any story you're better off just doing one route and getting properly involved with the one character. On the other hand, playing 1 route from one VN and another route from a totally different VN is perfectly fine in my experience. That works particularly well if you're in need of an H scene and one VN is miles away from the H scenes while the other one is in the thick of it. Just because there's some plot behind it doesn't mean it was meant to be anything other than an excuse for h-scenes. They then made an all ages port that just replaces the sex scenes with some other CGs to reach a wider audience, but originally it was just a fapdisc. The closest I've ever come to reading two routes from the same vn was while reading Yume Miru Kusuri, and even then all that happened was I got halfway through one route, got bored and started the other and didn't return until I finished the second one. He won't accept help from anybody on the project either. I never thought he'd come back after 2 years but he actually did, but still progress will likely be slow as hell as usual. I'd say 1/2 years from now you might get a patch, assuming current average pace and assuming he won't die again and only come back 2 years later. It'll probably come out before LB EX lol.
