Screw good VNs, I'm looking for bad Visual Novels!

-Flashback-

Recommended Posts

You read it right. We've all played memorable Visual Novel games that won't forget, the ones that were just great in the aspects we value the most, being it storyline, creativity, character design, innovation, humor, great endings....

but there are also the ones which are also memorable... in a negative way. And that's I want to look into this time. I am looking to see what the community values the most and despises the most about VNs, what gets people going and what ruins it.... And what the hell, it looks like fun.

The funny thing is, the most popular VNs out there, the ones that are full of positive reviews are usually not that great to me, even some like Shuffle! that I simply couldn't even get to the end of it because of how tedious, predictable and just silly all around the plot was. It must have been the first VN I ever cried to... I was bored to tears!

On the other hand, the dark ones that nobody's ever heard, qutie unknown are usually the ones I like best. Yeah, I'm the hipster of VNs, lol.

So, give me your worst! If I get an interesting suggestion and play it, I would probably post a review somewhere about it. Just one note: No gay/lesbian/sadistic please.

Shuffle is awful.

Most VNs are pretty bad. Wanna read bad visual novels? Pick a random one, the statistics are on your side. You'll end up with a self-insert romance story with poorly developed characters, a pathetic excuse for a plot and porn forced in there somewhere for sales.

Dark VNs, huh. There's plenty of pretty good ones out there. Why don't you take a look at my list? You'll get some pretty good ones.

For specific examples, you may like Phenomeno, Comyu, Hanachirasu or Saya no Uta. There's a bunch more, though.

Uh... Just before suggesting something hateable, I must advise you: have you ever heard of literary hangover? This happens when you read some bad books, and then (even if you've already read great things) you lose the will to read books because you think that almost every other book you read will be bad. Be aware that the same can happen to VNs (it's already happened to me)

So, one the community hates as I heard is HARUKOI OTOME

you think so? I feel the opposite! After many consecutive hours of playing complete crap, when I play even an average game would be the best thing after sliced bread. I would be like "wowwwww, this is so totally awesome". Maybe I will learn the value the good things more after this, aha!

EDIT: guys, I mentioned the Shuffle! game because there used to be a lot of hype before the English version came out! really! There was a fan-translation project and everyone was like super-duper impatient for it to get released.... and in fact, the release of the English patch was postponed for such a long time that the official European release in English actually came out first, ahahahah! I was so disappointed by the long wait and then it turned out to be the biggest piece of crap I've ever seen.

Sorry, wrong thread.

Not really. I liked it, but all the heroine routes are bad and the comedy is what Key always does, so it's not really funny for old-timers.

Refrain was the only saving grace of that VN, but there are much better nakiges out there.

TL;DR Key makes average games.

Want some butter:ph34r:

Oh, F/SN too.

Oh man, that cracked me up! ahahah! Does that game even have an official licence? I'm pretty sure Gordon wouldn't give it a green light! Also, notice how none of the reviews gave it a score below 4/10.

First reviews of bad games will be posted shortly (few days time)!

Seriously, the heroine routes were pretty damn bad for me. Had to hold in the temptation to just skip through them completely at all times.

I liked it, but I like all sorts of crappy literature. Wouldn't have played so may VNs if I couldn't take enjoyment of mediocre to bad stories, which is what I get the most, unfortunately.

Then again, you can't really be objective about this type of thing.

Of course you can be objective. You enjoy something because the good points for you are enough to overshadow the flaws, and you don't enjoy something when you think there's too much flaws that can't be forgiven.

You can't enjoy something you think it's bad, it's a contradiction.

Let me quote LB! as an example.

1. Didn't like haruka's route because of the forced drama. Besides some serious plot issues.

2. Kud's route was average because it lacked focus and consistency.

3. Mio and kurugaya were good because they had good romantic scenes and the plot was well handled.

4. Komari's route was awesome because it didn't lack focus and had a pretty touching story, as well as memorable moments.

You ought to take a look at the meaning of the words "objective" and "bad". I don't think they mean what you think they mean.

Opinions on literature can't be objective because it's impossible to completely remove emotion and personal bias of the judgment of a literary work... Which is needed for an objective judgment. For something to be objective, it has to exist independently of perception or an individual's conceptions- Even in a less broad sense, people will disagree on what makes a work good or bad, or how well a certain trope was executed within that work- an objective standard for entertainment is pretty damn impossible.

Bad just doesn't mean "unable to be enjoyed", plain and simple. There's no contradiction there. There are awful, awful works that I can have fun with by just mocking them out loud while reading. In LB's case, it's more that a single part of it (refrain) was midly entertaining while the rest either sucked or badly sucked, so the work still goes into the "bad" category for being unable to meet the subjective standards I set for a "good" VN, even with a good part.
