Windows 10 Visual Novel Compatiblity

Not sure I will touch the free version - the idea of forced updates doesn't appeal. Heard it's already causing troubles with device drivers.

Besides, nobody has to hop on it right away, if you're eligible for the free version - you have a full 12 months starting the day it launches to decide.

I'll be upgrading all my computers as soon as the upgrade becomes available for them (I guess they're rolling out the free upgrade thing in waves right now?). I'm the early adopter type. I don't really expect any problems, but I guess we'll see. If anything, they'll probably be the kind of problems that can be resolved by dropping a local copy of version.dll into the game EXE folder :sachi:

Not really a VN subject, but anyone running win 10 may want to look this over:

Thought I'd post it for you guys, make sure you're not broadcasting you wifi pw to some random facebook guy/etc.

I've heard that Air and Kanon don't work on 8.1 and 10, is this true? I'm actually in the process of playing these currently.

Kanon seems to work fine for 8.1 at least for me.

On a side note I'd be very cautious of windows 10 there is a lot to dislike...I find it odd that they keep trying to push newer less secure designs on us when most people think 7 is the best microsoft will ever be capable of.

to clarify: Win 10 will launch on July 29th globally.

to clarify #2: Win 10 is now on consumer build phase. I know this because I'm an insider myself. Latest build is quite polished and the issues are minimal.

I exported my VN collection to my win 10 partition and so far 100% of them are working. Here's the list:

* Chaos Head - flawless

* Da Capo - Flawless

* Da Capo 2 - Flawless + better performance than on 8

* ef the first tale - Flawless + audio no longer gives problems

* ef the latter tale - Flawless

* Fate Stay Night - Flawless

* Go Go Nippon! - Flawless

* Muv Luv (Series) - Flawless

* I/0 - Flawless

* Kanon - Flawless

* Clannad - Flawless

* Air - Needs running as admin

* Ever 17 - Needs running in compat mode for win 7

* Little Busters - Flawless

* Little Busters EX/ME - Flawless

* Da Capo 3 - Flawless

* Koisuru Nasu Love Resort - Flawless

* To Heart2 - Needs running in compat mode for win 7

* Hoshisora e kakaru Hashi - Flawless

* Noble Works - Flawless

* Majikoi - Flawless

* Majikoi S - Flawless

* Majikoi A-1 - Flawless

* Hoshimemo - Flawless

* Hoshimemo EH - Same issues as other OS's (requires changing time zone to JP) fast fix = AlphaROMdiE

* Osadai - Flawless, (no longer needs win8 patch)

* Osadai FD - Flawless

* Rewrite - Flawless

* Harvest festa - Flawless

* Shuffle! - Flawless

* Really! Really? - Flawless

* Imouto Paradise - Flawless + better performance than on 8

* Boob wars (series) - Flawless + better performance than on 8

* Princess evangile - Flawless + better performance than on 8

* Yu-No - Flawless

* Duel Savior - Requires running in compat mode win xp

* Come see me tonight (series) - flawless

* Sharin no Kuni - NoDVD fix no longer works, requires ISO to be mounted when playing

* Sharin no Kuni FD - Same as above

* Dengeki Stryker - Flawless

* Snow Sakura - Flawless

* Stein's Gate - Flawless

* Grisaia (series) - Flawless + better performance than on 8

This is my personal collection, there may be more VN's that are compatible  but I will add them when I test them again for core release of win 10.

Both Sharin no Kuni titles work fine for me in win 10 no need for an iso or anything

CCCP and Kawaii pack are not the ones I would recommend honestly.

If you want my personal choice and recommendation: http://downloads.ddigest.com/software/download.php?sid=1089&ssid=0&did=5

Best codec pack IMO, lots of customisation, native rendering support and stability.

I use KCP but I don't use MPC at least not on this laptop, I run mpv. works beautifully on the desktop I use MPC

In regards to duel savior how did you get it to work without a directdraw error?

I played Kanon all the way through on 8.1 with no problems, and I played the first ~30 minutes of Air with no problems, before I got distracted by Fate/Stay Night.

I've definitely had some VNs not work well on 8/8.1, but I was always able to resolve them by reading enough pre-existing tech support threads.

What are you even talking about? The only thing I found on the internet claiming Windows 10 will be less secure than any previous version is some moron posting a doom-and-gloom prediction of problems with no basis in reality. And, yes, I feel pretty justified calling him a moron, on the basis of this paragraph alone:

"Windows Explorer may now be called File Explorer and sport a new interface, but it still hides the file type by default. That is, a file called hackmeplease.jpg.exe will still appear in File Explorer as hackmeplease.jpg. This is shameful."

I think it's much more accurate to say most people think 7 is the best Microsoft has released so far, and they're certainly right. Anybody who thinks Windows 7 is the best operating system that Microsoft could ever hypothetically release is clearly not thinking straight. It ain't that great. Neither is any given iOS or Mac OS, nor any given Linux distro (I've used all of the above in pretty large amounts). These things get better in some ways, and worse in some ways. Time and experience will tell if Windows 10 is more on the better side or more on the worse side, but the reviews are very, very positive; it's a little bit premature to declare it dead and buried because the default file explorer behavior doesn't tell you the file extension...

http://www.extremete...-skype-contacts

Posted that earlier in the thread, but thought i'd point it your way. By design it puts a pretty big hole in being secure (at least if you are on a wifi network/router).

Ahh, ok, then that is one feature I'd certainly opt-out of, because of the way you can't limit the sharing; and if it's on by default, I can see why people are unhappy about it. Doesn't seem well thought-through.

That said, even if that feature is a misstep, overall security seems to be improving - Windows Hello is, finally, a step towards a secure login alternative to passwords, and I'm reading vague rumblings about more baked-in support for multi-factor auth. Given that constant corporate security breaches are the norm today, I'm happy to see any move that gets us a little further away from passwords, just to make it less impactful every time someone announces, "Yep, we got hacked, and they probably got your password".

I've briefly played with Windows 10 and tried these installation methods: upgrading from Windows 8, as well as a clean install.

In both cases, the Japanese fonts like MS Gothic are not installed by default in Windows 10 (despite them being included in previous versions of Windows) which means they'll need to be installed from the control panel.

To do that....

1. bring up the Start Menu -> Settings

2. click System

3. pick Apps & Features (on the left)

4. choose Manage optional features

5. choose Add a feature

6. find Japanese Supplemental Fonts and install it

I think this could be important for people who play VNs in Japanese.  Make sure you install the Japanese supplemental fonts, or text in VNs may not display correctly.  This quote was in response to a person having problems with Kamidori Alchemy Meister using the English fan patch.

  • 3 weeks later...

So, for those who have tried the new OS, can you tell me BRIEFLY about what is different about it from its predecessors?

Pros:

+ Get updates regularly

+ It's a free update (if you have Windows 7, 8 or 8.1)

+ Have Cortana

+ Internet Explorer has been faster than before

+ Can play some Non-unicode games without Region change (not confirmed)

+ Less Blue Screen of Death

Cons:

+ Some sources claimed that Microsoft is using Windows 10 to get private info from consumer's PC (haven't confirmed)

+ Compatibility issues with some games (some VNs like 小女ラムネ」の起動 and ひまわり!! ‐あなただけを見つめてる crashed for unknown reasons)

+ Extremely RAM consuming for some dumb reason if using Chrome or Firefox

+ If access Windows Store, ads gonna bother you... A LOT !!!

+ No Windows Media Player (that means that you have to install manually, search on Microsoft page for more details)

To sum this up: Windows 10 is buggy as f*ck. Recommended using two Windows, in case of Windows 10 gets too buggy for you.

May consider stopping being a old fart and upgrade to Windows 10 soon, I'd like feedback on how the transition felt like for those who went from 8.1 to 10 regarding overall usage, productivity, multimedia entertainment, and the good ol' VNs.

I think I remember Decay bein' all like "there's no reason not to upgrade", sooo hihi @Decay advise pls

1) it's free

2) you have "multiple desktops" so now your incognito porn tab can be separated from your other stuff without closing them

3) there's a search option in the taskbar

4) quick access on "This PC" screen will be a pain in the ass if you store porn

5) you get used to having the start menu back

overall it's nice

do it

the only VN related problem I've seen on W10 is that Grisaia's "skip to next choice" function crashes the game

heard it autodownloads now

I haven't downloaded the latest Window Updates, just in case. Right now I've got that permanent task tray icon which every so often transforms itself into a window, reaches through your screen, starts shaking your shoulders and screams things like 'update your gorram OS' and 'heathens will burn in the unholy fire of Apple' or something.

^i feel good, knowing that a legit dinosaur hasn't upgraded to 10 yet.

And yeah, dem "update your gorram OS, 110m+ people already did, join da club you damned hipster" needs to get shot.

I'll do sommore research, and most likely will probably finally make the update to 10 on like the last day it's free.

The only reason you need to know to not update to Windows 10 is that it's spyware.
I'm really baffled that so many people don't care about their privacy at all and happily update to an operation system which doesn't even hide that it will collect all your private data and is monitoring and logging everything you're doing.

Especially if you use this system to play your chinese underaged pron games you should probably care a little bit more about privacy, just saying, lol.
And the biggest joke of all is that Windows 10 compatibility for visual novels is the worst of every Windows OS yet.
Like there is zero reason for anyone of you to update and hundreds of reasons to not do it. And you guys are still updating.

I don't even. Why are you doing this? I really want to know. Because I just don't get it. At all.

Windows 10 will always be free. That's the whole point of it. Every doubt you have is clever marketing.
It's not really rocket science to understand what Microsoft is doing here...

"But if we have nothing to hide, there's no reason to be worried about our privacy" argues some businesses such as google - and even some consumers that apparently live like saints. :makina:

I might buy the professional version eventually, once the games I play demand DX12 (professional, becuase I've read you have alot more control on the privacy stuff) - but otherwise, I completely gutted and removed all traces of win10's upgrade program and runtime. Only issue is, I'm never sure what KB update it will be hidden away in with windows updates, so I've been avoiding updates. =/

The thing people don't understand is, that by getting the free version - you are signing a contract that says you are allowing Microsoft and whatever partners they have (hi Google!) - to collect info and install various "features" without you permission. The free version forces you into a "testing group" where you get bombbarded by marketing. It's actually pretty clever. Forced adware and spyware built right into the OS - unless you are willing to officially buy the OS.
