Zalor got a reaction from Silvz in Top 10 Redemption Arcs of Visual Novel Characters.
A VN isn't coming immediately to mind other than Umineko, which @Silvz already recommended.
If you don't mind reading a manga or watching an anime, Monster by Naoki Urasawa might be just what you are looking for. The main character goes on a huge quest after discovering that a boy whose life he saved years ago grew up to be a serial killer. There is also a character later on in the series who was responsible for several tragedies, but who retires from public life and is living the remainder of his life in guilt of what he's done. Both the anime and manga of Monster are excellent, so you can't go wrong with either.

Burn which capitol, the capitol of Fuwanation? As a die hard patriot of these forums, I have remained loyal to Fuwastan from the beginning. Even now I refuse to step foot on enemy territory, notably r/vns. Even our colonies, the Fuwa discord, I can count on one hand all the times I've ventured over there. And while I'm on the topic, it should be said that the Fuwa discord is a renegade state. They have no true reverence for our homeland, I heard they even have their own memes! It won't be too long before the secede from us like the traitorous Americans did to Britain. Fuwanese may be my 2nd language, but it's the one I choose to use on a daily basis. Burning down the capitol would be to burn down our history. To dishonor Aaeru who first built this place up, and then Tay who has maintained it since her untimely disappearance. If you want to burn down the capitol of Fuwaland, you will have to go through me first!

I was in honest to God disbelief when I first heard about this. I thought a Tsukihime remake was just a meme at this point. I hope they are actually serious this time

I feel you about wanting to join a community to grow with other VN developers. I'm in a somewhat similar boat, however part of my problem is that my vision for visual novels is quite different from the standard established genres. So finding people that share my vision is exceptionally hard. If you're working on an Otome VN, I think there are a fair amount of other Otome VN developers you should be able to find and hopefully befriend. @Plk_Lesiak gave great suggestions. Lemmasoft in particular is THE place where you will find other EVN devs.

Functionally, the new Microsoft console probably has the best hardware for VNs.  Sadly, the lack of a foothold in Japan will hinder them - just like it has with each iteration of the xbox - in actually getting any games out of Japan on their system.
Consoles have pretty much become a stand-in for people who can't afford gaming PCs over here.  A gaming PC generally bottoms out at $1000 and there is no limit to how much one can cost, if you go all-out.  Even the current generation of consoles is half that, which means the trade-off in flexibility is attractive for people who just want to game.
VNs have minimal requirements - relatively speaking - but high-end VNs sometimes have ridiculous ones for the content (I mean, why should any VN have a 3GB RAM requirement?  It isn't like there is all that much in the way of gameplay).
The fact that most VNs are based off the PC produces the need for ports, which cost a surprising amount of money to produce sometimes (depending on the original engine and the system they are porting it to).  Like any port, the benefit vs cost analysis is everything to most companies.  If people buy the VNs that get ported enough to justify the cost, then we'll see more get ported and sent over here.
Personally, if I was going to play a console VN, I'd want it on the Switch.  The Switch is more convenient than either of the other two systems, with the ability to easily connect it to a TV, its light weight, and its portability.  I really wish the PSP version of Ayakashibito would get ported to Switch, lol.
As for popularity?  That's more questionable.  It's going to be years before we see any real results from the console market for VNs.  There just aren't a lot of JVNs that aren't otomege on consoles just yet, even over there.  Without the content, there is nothing to lust after, after all.
Note: Understand that when I say there is a 'limited' number of JVNs on console, I mean this in a relative sense.  One reason that VNs have managed to create a niche over here is the sheer number localization companies have to select from with JVNs.  The number of 'classics' and high-quality VNs in general makes it possible to cherry-pick, whereas consoles don't, as of yet, have the numbers to allow for that.

as zalor says. but yea we will most likely see alot of ports to the switch, if not in english the market will be getting alot bigger in japan as sony no longer will battle the handheld market. where ,any vns have thrived in the past on the vita.  also switch is apperently easy to throw ports onto 🤷‍♀️ if you have a hacked switch you can get basicly any renpy game to run on it with homebrew app.  so even if you buy it on steam you can just transfer it.
not that im a console gamer myself. but pretty much only reason why im alittle interested in that underpowerd thing.

I think the Switch is a great platform for VNs for 2 reasons. You can read on the big screen, and you can read in a more portable manner (like lying in bed with the switch in your hands). In a sense, it kind of baffles me that in the west at least, VNs have pretty much been exclusively a computer thing. Whereas in Japan, the PSP and Vita were a major platform that a lot of VNs got released on. But the Switch is the perfect in between by being both portable and a console. Idk where this will take us in terms of future releases, but I am quite hyped for the Umineko port for the Switch.

Its possible, its something in the forum settings you can enable.
but our storage is rather limited & we need space remaining for backups etc. so if we enabled it we would have to clean out after some time and it would break alot of images in the threads.
but its possibly something for the future, might have to be seperate storage server. something i will have to look into 🙂

Zalor got a reaction from SabrinaF in Visual Novels on Android
A while back there was a serious effort to get more VNs to work on Android. Way back in 2013 actually, I would recommend reading this thread: Android Visual Novel [Let's play visual novel on the go!]. However a more up to date thread from 2018 goes over it a bit, and most people in that thread don't seem to recommend it. If on the off chance you can read Japanese, there are some high profile VNs you can get on the Play Store. I'm pretty sure KEY has some of its VNs on it. They may be in English, but I'm pretty sure they are Japanese only for now, might be worth at least checking to confirm for sure.
I think Katawa Shoujo might also have a port for Android. Which is a VN I would highly recommend.

Okay. I'll just focus on crime theories for now, as I don't have much to add on the tea parties and ???. It's witches witching about.
Full spoilers for the entirety of Umineko.
    Episode 1 murder theory:
    That's my theory.
I now present to you episode two stream of consciousness. This time I wrote far less about random details. That may mean I was more invested, or maybe less. I'm not sure.
To be honest, I don't appreciate the author telling me how to enjoy my mystery novels, but fine. I can try and solve them, see? (To be honest, I now realise that Ryukishi07 really did give us everything we needed to get through all the hard parts if we'd read through Umineko once.)

Zalor reacted to Nandemonai in Basically, how better are translator groups at choosing which VN to translate?
Localization companies have a lot of constraints.  The business requires co-operation with the Japanese side of things.  No game can be released without the consent and involvement of the rights holders.  The Japanese IP holder can't just sign on the dotted line and take easy royalty money.  They have to do work.  Legal work, chasing down VA contract clearance.  Graphics work, uncensoring the artwork and finding original assets.  Programming work, updating the game engine to handle incompatibilities with Western OS default settings and the fact that Western languages use characters that, in Japanese, nobody ever uses so you're free to use things like apostrophes and commas as game scripting commands.
Witness Kara no Shoujo and Koihime initially releasing with no VA because they couldn't afford to pay the VA fees.  Witness a certain game I know of not ever getting an editing pass to fix issues, even though company staff privately admitted to me they wanted to - because the Japanese side didn't want to give the localizer their script compiler, and didn't want to be bothered because they'd already provided one fix and seemed to feel 'why jerk us around fixing one thing at a time'?  Witness Pulltop, releasing Princess Waltz under Jast USA (great game by the way) then deciding to start MoeNovel.  Or Jast USA getting Steins;Gate but not being the ones to release it on Steam, or anything else by them.  Navel pulled out of a partnership with MangaGamer to release Shuffle! on Steam all by themselves.
The licensors have a lot of pull, and they absolutely will use it.  And the truth is, VNs sell a truly pitiful number of copies in English.  Koihime had no VA because they didn't think the game could sell two thousand copies.  It eventually did, after close to two years.  After they decided to cheat a bit and include the size of their hard copy print run in the 2K (assuming it would eventually sell through) because they didn't want to do a hard copy release of it with no voice.  Things are somewhat better if your game can get on Steam, but after Steam opened the floodgates suddenly there's lots of games on Steam and so few nowadays get the eye-popping sales figures IMHHW or Nekopara did once upon a time.
So even though sales are declining slowly but steadily in Japan, as mobile inexorably cannibalizes everything else people used to spend money on, they're still - even far removed from what they used to be at the peak, like they are nowadays - still far higher than they are in English.  This makes it a tough sell for most companies.

Regardless, I've decided to give it another try. Here's a stream of consciousness for the first episode of Umineko, which I started on Thursday and only now finished.
Spoilers for the entire novel as I've read the whole thing and will be using the bits and bobs I remember as I go through.
I'll follow with the tea party and ??? and then possibly clearer thoughts. Also I'll make a blogpost for my everything on Episode 1 at some point.
