@Zodaiand @Deep BlueIn general, I just needed to get it out of my system to be able to properly read the VN...  I don't mean it as an insult but rather a statement of personal bias.  I had to do the same thing last year with Soreyori, and I try to do something similar whenever I run across a company or VN that seriously hits my sensitive areas.

You can use square brackets, like this: (spoiler)Text(/spoiler), just use [] instead of ().

It's really hard to talk about the novel without using the spoiler tag  and I made sure of not spoiling anything but yeah I do agree that one particular part was a bit too much yet there is an explanation for it.
It goes without saying that the novel is not perfect but I praise it a lot because it does something different without trying to mimic or copy cliche stories that we have already seen many many times specially on EVN, and it does so with some amazing characters and some really good dialogues between them, some of the conversations between Ausse and Ciar are too damn funny, the part with the reference to katawa shoujo I was laughing out loud and I don't usually do so, add philosophy and a real drama to it and you have an excellent visual novel that you don't find every day.

I guess you don't take your time to enjoy and miss the voice acting in the vns then, which in my opinion is a huge part along with the music.

Deep Blue got a reaction from Darbury in POLL: To San or Not to San (Honorifics in VNs)
Sometimes not using honorifics can screw up a dialog much later on in the story, for example there was a vn that almost by the end the characters were having a discussion on why the MC wasn't adding honorific to the heroine when he was addressing her, there is no way to fix that other than changing that entire dialog and making something up. Also honorifics are part of the culture in Japan so if you want to keep that intact and stay true to the meaning of what you are reading and translating then you should keep them.
Yes you are translating a vn for a western public that they might or might not understand or know everything about the Japan culture but if they are reading a vn (which is a Japanese creation) then they probably know about it and if they don't they should, why else would they be reading it?

Sure. But "trash tier" is a fairly pompous (and unconstrucive, I might add) way of critiquing.
One would expect some levels of credential from someone willing to make such statements.

No, no, you are entirely mistaken. My interest in male genitals increases threefold per giant, blurry pixel.
As for the translation choice, I'm not a native, tricky sounds as English as any other word to me. Same goes for useless. If anything, I found it curious how it had been translated as "tricky", which I hadn't seen before, but that's about it.

You can always start your own translation and then do the editing yourself or gather a team to do it, if you don't like how others do their work you can easily fix that by doing it yourself and better, complaining about something that was giving to you for free is really easy but actually "eating the whole whale" as Darbury said is not that simple.

Oh yeah? Well I reject your rejection of my test. Bet you weren’t expecting that, huh? HA!

Everyone’s experience with a work is going to be subjectively different, of course. “I was pressed for time, so I only read the main route of Steins;Gate.” That’s completely valid — but it doesn’t change the content of what you didn’t read. “I was tired and had a head cold, so I started skipping over those bits in A Song of Ice and Fire where the author started geeking out about characters’ genealogy.” That’s also completely valid — but it doesn’t mean those sections weren’t there. (And boring as all hell.)

There’s a definable corpus to a VN text. There aren’t infinitely possible outcomes that need to be interpolated. The VN has a limited number of branching plot lines — usually a half-dozen or so — each of which read like short novellas. Taken as a whole they comprise the body of the work. And it’s that work to which the world-renowned Darbury Test™ can be applied.

But keep in mind, this test proves nothing. It’s an interesting thought experiment in how narratives are constructed and populated, nothing more.

I can think of ever 17 and a few examples on rewrite too (no sex in this vns  ) and of course last but not least narcissu second, all girls protagonist and for the entire vn they do not talk about men, but yeah it's hard to find examples, whatever you do don't tell Anita Sarkeesian about this lol

So what have we learned today?

    (1) The term "pearl necklace" is more unfamiliar to people than I might have imagined. Clearly, I've been reading too many of the right wrong sites.

    (2) If your girlfriend asks you for a pearl necklace for her birthday, think long and hard before you answer.

As for the joke itself, that slang being esoteric might actually work in its favor. A few lines later, Soutarou marvels to himself that Riho knows the term. All of which is nice foreshadowing for her route.

I hear what you're saying, Deep Blue, but I think if you're going to translate/edit a work into English, you need to do so primarily with native English speakers in mind. Otherwise, you end up cutting yourself off from a huge swath of idiom and poetics just because the non-native speaker might not have been exposed to them. The resulting prose would be functional yet totally flavorless.

Anyway, I don't think I'd call the entirely of the native English-speaking world "a very narrow audience." This particular slang usage of "pearl necklace" can be found in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Australia. I don't know about New Zealand, but I'd have to imagine that if the Aussies are on board, then so are the Kiwis.

All that said, I honestly feel bad that non-native speakers like yourself might be (literally) left out on the joke. So you have my apologies for that. If you ever find yourself in New York, I'll buy you a beer as a make-good.
