  1. My least favorite route plot? That would be where the route has no dramatic tension and is just a vehicle to deliver H-scenes or other "feel-good" fluff. A lot of games just tack "routes" on to check a feature box and don't feature any meaningful divergence from the main plot.
  2. Escude is actively releasing games in English. Why not work on a title unlikely to see an official release? Alternatively, you could approach English publishers and see if they'd hire you to translate this, in which case the hacking/insertion would probably be done for you.
  3. I think the community in general has fragmented. It's still there, but it's spread across Discord, Twitter, Facebook, and other places for unstructured discussion, in addition to the many forum alternatives such as Steam, VNDB, and Reddit. As others have pointed out, fan translation is accounting for a smaller proportion of releases, and as a fan translation hub Fuwanovel is thus losing its ability to draw new members. To stay relevant, Fuwanovel would have to eke out a new niche, something that distinguishes itself from the many alternatives. I do think that forums are steadily losing ground to alternatives, especially Discord and Twitter. These are far more frictionless for new users, as they allow you to interact with many different communities with a single registration, and you can participate without needing to organize your thoughts or have any subject matter knowledge. The small cliques that form on such platforms are also often more comfortable since these platforms enable users to congregate with likeminded people and avoid people they disagree with. It's more difficult to do this on a forum, which usually draws a more diverse community (if it's large enough to sustain activity to begin with).
  4. Where I'm living we're entering lockdown. My employer told me to stay home (with pay), my complex closed all the common areas and the office isn't conducting face-to-face meetings anymore. All this and the number of reported cases in my area is still in the single digits.
  5. Influenza is unstable on surfaces. It lasts for only a few minutes on the skin, which means there's much less opportunity for hand-to-face transmission. Meanwhile SARS-CoV-2 appears to last for hours or days on many surfaces. The Diamond Princess quarantine represents a unique social experiment, as we have a population that was thoroughly tested and thus where we know both the total infected as well as the total dead. 5 weeks after the start of the outbreak, 7 had died. Adjusting for this puts the estimated death rate in the (Chinese) general population at ~0.5%, which is more deadly than the seasonal flu ( ~0.1%), but not "100x" so. Note that all the deaths observed in this particular sample were in people aged 70+.
  7. Some experts are predicting that this infection will become endemic--that is, a large proportion of the population will be exposed sooner or later. If you're in a susceptible population, this infection is dangerous. So is the seasonal flu (which has a staggering death toll each year). But normally our health system is equipped to handle the seasonal waves (we also have vaccines for the flu that provide a degree of protection). The danger here is less the threat of infection and more the rate of infection--as well as the behavioral and social consequences of fear.
  8. COVID-19, the infection, is a systems-level threat. Unless you fall in one of the susceptible populations for pneumonia, you're not personally at high risk. The main risks here are: The infection spreading rapidly through susceptible populations and overwhelming healthcare systems: Critically-ill patients with COVID-19 who would have survived with proper care end up dying. People with other conditions also end up dying because they couldn't get proper care. The response itself causing as much harm (or more) than the disease: Every response has an opportunity cost--often, a human cost. Quarantines and other commercial restrictions (voluntary or government-imposed) cause people to lose their jobs. Panic-buying of surgical masks create shortages where they're actually needed. Financial markets crashing causes people at or near retirement to potentially lose their livelihoods. Anything that creates or exacerbates poverty could have long-term consequences on human health. At this point in the spread of the infection, there is no silver bullet. Under-respond and you get 1. Over-respond and you get 2. We can't know in advance exactly what the appropriate response is, but even the hypothetical optimal response will incur some degree of harm. All we can do is listen to experts and hope our respective public health systems know what they're doing. Since most of the risk most individuals will face is not from infection, but from systems-level effects, what we can each do personally is limited.
  9. That's outright bizarre that they'd charge so much for the engine license that it's more economical to just port the game to a different engine. So much of the eroge industry seems to operate in a Bizarro World that defies common sense.

  12. Unfortunately, risk of disappointment--or even project implosion--is part of the crowdfunding experience. Never back more than you're willing to see disappear with nothing to show for it. Don't back companies you don't trust. Don't back with any expectation of timelines being met or delays being properly communicated. Companies have no obligation to refund your money if you aren't satisfied. If you have concerns about any of the above, you shouldn't be pledging in the first place. That said, clearly Sol Press is in pretty dire straits if a few thousand dollars is more important to them than their company's reputation. It sounds like their main concern right now is stopping the bleeding rather than long-term health.

  15. What to license It's a basic supply and demand problem. What's available, how much it costs to sell, how much you can expect to sell at what price. The best deal isn't necessarily the most-wanted title. Licensing Mosaics can be a major sticking point. Some companies don't want to release an ero version overseas at all. Timeline The process goes at the rate of the slowest step. In many cases, this is the interface between the JP dev and the English localization team. God help you if you encounter problems that only the devs can fix, and they see your project as their lowest priority (typical).

  17. I justify this as a desire to promote games that might not be on peoples' radar, or that they might not have seriously considered. Why spend time and effort promoting that which has already been extensively covered elsewhere, especially if my perspective doesn't bring anything new to the table? Does that generate value for my audience? As a novelty seeker, I'm often interested in the games people AREN'T playing, and giving them reasons they should. Conversely, I don't write too many negative reviews, because why would I choose to spend my time writing reviews about games I didn't like?
  18. This seems backwards. As people progress in their careers, their income tends to grow (more money, not less). A work of fiction's target demographic tends to correlate with its protagonist (high school settings with a straight male protagonist would be aimed at young males). More likely: Eroge appeal to young males. As the market has matured, its initial base has grown older and drifted away for various reasons--including moving on in their career (less time) and that THEY'RE the ones less interested in high school settings and writing aimed at young males. Meanwhile, the younger generation has less disposable income these days, a phenomenon that isn't limited to Japan. Many of them spend their time on mobile, consoles, or on social media, and may not even have a PC for personal use. Those who have a PC and game on it have a growing library of Western alternatives to play (e.g., on Steam).
  19. Should be similar to Valve's cut: ~30-40%. Keep in mind the expense of running a digital shop is not trivial. By cutting retail out of your operation entirely, that's a significant savings in time, effort, and money--especially if you're just going to suck at it anyway.

I'm not sure how a business like this can keep going when they stop selling the vast majority of their lineup for months at a time, and even delay new releases because they're fixated on release on their (broken) store or not at all. Japanese devs have gone under for less. Meanwhile the likes of Sol Press are struggling just to get by, even without such levels of dysfunction.
  21. The unique draw of VNs is ero with context--often a little ero and a lot of context. You don't really find this in other mediums of porn, especially outside Japan.
  22. "Improved translation" I didn't realize there was anything to improve. Seemed pretty much flawless.
