Almost every beginner visual novel guide has story, gameplay, and western original visual novels. What about for people who want to try that slice of life genre? In this video, I'll provide 10 moege options for those new to the genre.

TexasDice got a reaction from Shaun in Sekai Project about to release Hoshizora no Memoria Eternal Heart Fandisc!
I think it's been over 8 years since the community effort was dropped and TL was abandoned and given to Sekai Project (which is the same thing as dead forever, tbh). But it actually and finally came out; The Hoshimemo Fandisc!

I would like to tell you fine folks more about it, but in some wild turn of events, the HD Translation up for sale (the only version available for purchase) can ONLY be run in FULL SCREEN. There is NO windowed option in SIGHT.
So I can't read it, because I can't read fullscreen VNs. But maybe someone else who still cares about Hoshimemo can tell me if it's a good release. For me, it failed straight in the options screen.

    Moege reports:
    Koikari is incredibly entertaining.

That's it. It's not high art and it's not deep, nor world changing. But regardless, I cannot stop reading through at breakneck speed. Oh and the nonstop meme-barrage from the other localized ASaproject title, Suki to Suki is not in this one, which I personally appreciate.

Primals Hearts 2 is even better than the first game. And as weird as it seems to see sequels in the medium, what is even weirder is that 2 directly references the events of 1. Like a real sequel. Very raunchy, but also pretty funny.

Study § Steady is still a broken piece of shit. Don't buy it if you own an AMD card, the VN will not work and crash every 10 or so lines. Shame, because the Art is the most fantastic thing I have ever seen.

TexasDice reacted to Clephas in 10 Difficulties and Frustrations related to Visual Novel Localization
    1) JVNs are generally priced high in Japan and over here have greatly reduced pricing.
    2) Localization speed can be anywhere from three months to seven years depending on the company doing the job and any legal issues involved.
    3) My advice?  Don't until you have it done and ready for release, then announce it a month before you release it with plenty of community outreach.
    4)  The balance between Westernization and translation.  An eternal dilemma for people doing anything related to bringing JVNs over here.
    5)  Who cares about censorship?  Mosaic is sexy *Clephas's eyes go blank and he gives an eerie smile*
    6) Digital availability?  Well, preferably, it should be available on Steam at the very least, since a lot of people don't want to trust their credit cards to small net shops run by individual localization companies.
    7) Pay for localization staff sucks, end of story.
8 ) Kickstarters were great for the first iteration of the larger localization industry (as opposed to the 'old version' where there were precisely three companies doing localization and spent years on each one), but now they are just an excuse to defray costs in advance with no guarantee of an actual release.
    9) No need for physical versions of the localized games, unless the game becomes popular enough to justify a commemorative edition.
    10) VNs are less niche than they used to be, but any genre where reading is a significant part of the experience will always be niche, as most people are too stupid to be truly literate.

What a coincidence, I was just on the phone with a VN developer located in Asia, Africa, Australia and Antarctica. They had this amazing concept about a VN featuring a Black protagonist.
But I unfortunately had to tell them, that this guy called Nenor5VB only wanted something like this from a European or American developer. So they obliged and cancelled the whole project.

    Man, Magpie is awesome.

I just started reading Making Lovers and was slightly annoyed by how blurry everything looked compared to the delightful 1440p of Kinkoi, which I finished a few days ago. (It turned out to be a great read; especially the final route. Can't go into any details without spoiling it though, so I'll just leave it at that.)
Aaanyway, the whole "blurry" situation was easily remedied thanks to this wondrous app. I don't know how it works from a technical standpoint, but it basically lets you sharpen the image through upscaling. If you haven't tried it out already, I highly recommend doing so. You can pick it up here, and then you just boot it up, choose which filter to use (Anime4K has some serious sharpening, but I think I prefer the slightly less defined ACNet option), launch whichever VN you want to use it in and hit Alt + F11 when you're in windowed mode.
Unfortunately, the upscaling forces the game into fullscreen, so I think you're out of luck if you prefer playing in windowed mode. For me personally, I always play in fullscreen anyway, so that part doesn't bother me.

In any case, here's a comparison shot of the original image and one with the Anime4K filter I mentioned above.

    Original:

    Anime4K:

I suggest you open the images in separate tabs and switch between them, as that makes the difference a lot clearer. Also, it's obviously much more apparent on a large screen. I dunno how much of a difference it makes on a laptop or the like.

TexasDice reacted to bakauchuujin in Do You Think Dracu-Riot Translation Will Be Released This Century?
Here is from Nekonyan's blog late March regarding Dracu Riot. So a HD remaster seems to be what is holding it up at the moment.
"Wow, this list got pretty short, huh? Wait I think I’m missing one…  Oh, right! I guess this is a good place to start for today.  Dracu Riot, huh.
You guys have been waiting very patiently for a really long time for this game, and we know you want to know what the holdup is. We’ve seen the comments don’t worry. There IS a reason for it, however, and we can finally talk about it now!
The truth is… Dracu Riot is getting a full HD Remaster and re-release in JP as well as in English!
Fortunately, Yuzusoft had the original super high res assets, so we’re going to be working on getting the entire game rebuilt from the ground up with high res assets and a new UI. It will be on our Unity engine and receive a total upgrade, including the same features you see in newer Yuzusoft projects, voice bookmarking, and more! Meow is currently working on the Clover Days port, once that is complete, he will begin the work of porting and implementing the new features for Dracu Riot!
Hopefully, this will make it worth the wait for you!"

Just dropping by to say that Kinkoi is absolutely based. Literally every single moege scenario that makes me go "why didn't they just do X / say Y" is actually subverted here.
Also, big applause to Nekonyan, for keeping the bad Sprite layering and other bugs from the original JP version.
Keeping honorifics to preserve the original experience? - I sleep
Keep the wrong face layer for the wrong sprite pose? - Yes please

Good post, because you reminded me that I am completely out of touch with the Ace Attorney series. I didn't watch the anime, I didn't play the fan-tl'd Investigations 2 and I completely forgot they made Spirit of Justice.

I finished Musicus. I'm too lazy to write a real post, so here are the thoughts I wrote to my friends on skype (spoilers:)
I definitely and wholeheartedly recommend Musicus, with the preemptive warning that it has an overall very heavy mood and tone.
Now, can someone tell me where I can buy all the OST songs?

Yeah, and that's mostly what it is, but the route I mentioned stands out from the rest. I've read all of Overdrive's other VNs, and this route is quite possibly the darkest thing they've written, even compared to Bokuten.

If anyone here wants to know what happens in the route without having to read it themselves, I can try doing a summary. There will be heavy spoilers, obviously.

I doubt this summary alone does it justice, since the writing and music are what truly gives this route its dark ambience. In any case, despite how depressing this part of the game may be, I still don't feel like marking the censored version of Musicus as "adult" is the right call, considering the fact that there are other games and VNs out there that were given a pass despite their disturbing content.

A bunch of people in my groups dropped the VN because of (or at least dismissed) Kasumi. They don't like her generic backstory, because it seems very contrived.

    Oh, I feel you.
What bothers me a lot in these kinds of stories, is that the only ending they ever seem to go for is the "I did a bunch of things, so now your DAD accepts me and everything is fine"-ending. Would it really be so bad to actually play out the story in which the couple elopes? I assume this is yet another "Japanese thing", where doing your own thing and fulfilling your own desires against your parent's wishes is frowned upon in society and that's why the authors never do it.

The 'fake girlfriend' trope.  I want this one to die forever.  It is the most idiotic trope in existence.  It never has non-embarrassing-to-watch results.
The 'reform the protagonist' trope.  This one pops up in a lot of games where the protagonist has a dark past or a hidden job that requires some dirty work, and it usually has the heroine trying to 'reform' him in various ways.  It annoys me about every time it pops up.  I usually like the protagonist just as he is in cases like this, lol.
I don't have any problems with the arranged marriage trope myself.  It doesn't happen often enough anymore to be a major issue outside of ojousama-ge, where it is standard fare.  Heroine has to move away happens even less often...  maybe one in forty new VNs have this one pop up nowadays.  Incurable disease is relatively common, with nakige in particular having a tendency to rely on this trope (without the heroine dying, of course).  However, it is also a matter of execution (lol)...
The incurable disease trope is something that has to be used intelligently and believably to work.  Dekinai Watashi ga, Kurikaesu;  Inochi no Spare; Tapestry; Kin'iro Loveriche; and Konakana all use this trope effectively to tell their stories.  However, there are just as many who plop it down just for the hell of it, so I see where you are coming from.
