It was great. Suzu's route was great. Kuki was great.
That final battle though. It was kind of funny.
Anyway, I'm still missing 2 scenes in the scene replay and 3 CGs.
Now if I just knew what I was missing...

Kosakyun reacted to Clephas in VNs and the nature of a good path
In the reading club thread for Ayakashibito, I mentioned the idea of 'paths transcending heroines', an idea that is uniquely linked to VN story structure as a whole.  These are paths that can be great for reading despite having a truly awful heroine or heroines.

Now, for those who prefer the moege as a genre, this concept is probably completely alien to your experience... to be blunt, this concept is essentially unknown in the moege genre.  The attractiveness of a heroine is usually at least fifty percent of the actual path's attraction, in most cases.  Moege quite simply do not follow the right ideas to produce this level of quality in a path.  Too much of the story is forcibly built to 'convenience' in order to make a heroine shine.  The events are inevitably almost entirely personal to the heroine, with most of the impact coming from the fact that you like/love/adore/worship that heroine.

The idea of a story that is brutally indifferent to what the heroine wants or her personal circumstances outside of those events she or the protagonist can directly influence is very rare in this type of game.  Generally speaking, there is some convenient way that presents itself for the protagonist or the heroine herself to solve these problems without going outside their immediate circle of friends or family... or someone just comes along and presents a convenient solution that solves everything without any truly realistic reason for it to end up that way.

Indifference of the world to the characters' convenience is a more common idea in non-otaku circles, though chuuni stories and military ones tend to gleefully include such, with an enthusiasm that sometimes goes way out on the deep end (see Muv-luv Alternative, as an example of this).

Anyway, back to paths transcending heroines... I more or less wanted to just outline how rare this is in VNs or male-oriented otakuism in general.  The fact is that it requires a level of writing skill and disregard for conventions that is unnatural and abnormal for the average otaku-oriented writer.  For a path to both have a heroine and have a plot that completely transcends her own attractiveness is an extremely hard thing to do... and something that should be appreciated when it does happen.

PS:  People who like more serious stories frequently ask me 'How can you play so many moege when you know you'll have to wade through piles of shit to find the gems?'  My answer - and this is unlikely to change - is that finding one gem is more than worth wading through fifteen piles of shit.  Yes, my contempt for the average moege/charage is fairly withering... but that is because I believe there are limits on the value of the virtue of mimicry, though I don't deny that such a virtue exists.

Edit:  Also, if I, by wading through all that shit, can prevent pure shit from being inflicted by uneducated enthusiasts upon poor unsuspecting translators, I will gladly do so *Clephas hints at those who grab a random good-looking VN from amongst recent releases and basically decide to start a translation project for it without knowing if it is good or not*

I'm sure some of you hadn't played Ayakashibito before are now starting to notice this, so I thought I'd go into more detail about 'paths transcending heroines'.

Touko- Touko is based off of a fairly common type of heroine in VNs, that of the self-sacrificing yamato nadeshiko.  In moege in particular, this kind of heroine is usually used as a counter or a foil for a classic tsundere or genkikko.  She has the added qualities you all know about now

but the base of her character is rather common in VNs.  So what makes her part of Ayakashibito so good?  To be blunt, it is the scenario.  When I talk about using cliches/archetypes/tropes well, I generally mean games like this.

The fact is, all of the virtues of this path are cliche... and yet somehow the path completely transcends those cliches.  The more you play VNs, the more you'll realize how often cliches will be included into the story... in the end, it is how a cliche is used that defines the quality of the plot, in most cases.

Tonya- Tonya's character is a little less common... the apparently disinterested heroine who

Nonetheless, this has long-since achieved the level of a cliche in more serious VNs... and yet, Tonya's path still manages to touch the heart of a jaded bastard like me on the third playthrough.  The addition of

adds another level of cliche to the path... and yet it is still undeniably a great path.  Why?  Because the way it was written transcends cliches and the heroines themselves.

Kaoru- This is perhaps the path in which 'heroines being transcended by their paths' is most obvious.  To be blunt, about half the people who play Ayakashibito are going to hate Kaoru.  There are lots of reasons for this

However, a lot of the people who absolutely despise her character reluctantly admit that her path is great... again, why is this?  Simple, because the path's story transcends her faults as a heroine.

Suzu- I'm going to be blunt here, despite being a long-time Suzu fan (and having a kitsunekko fetish).  Objectively speaking, Suzu is your classic 'girl with a special power that everybody with ambitions wants to use'.  The fact of her intimate family-like relationship to the protagonist is also very common in this type of scenario.  Anybody who has played Tales of Symphonia or a number of other jrpgs will recognize the basic scenario archetype... and yet, hardly anybody denies that this is the best path in an already high-quality VN.  For those who read this path... can you honestly disagree with the fact that you stopped caring about the de ja vu moments (if you noticed them at all) after only a short time into the story?

Edit:  You'll see this in practically all the paths in the good Propeller games and good chuuni games in general... in Bullet Butlers, the elf girl is probably one of the worst heroines I've ever come across... and yet her path maintains the same level of enjoyment I encountered in the paths of other, more interesting heroines in the same game.

Takumi is a normal guy who barely gets by with part-time jobs. One day, he was asked to attend the prestigious private school Rokuroku Gakuen while impersonating a rich student that looks just like him. Although he was hesitant to accept this strange request, circumstances (mainly financial) compelled him to agree to do it. However, he knows nothing about the celeb world. Will he be able to keep his cover?

Well, I've pretty much got my life set in stone at this point.
Unless I decide on going back to school, or by a stroke a luck win some kind of lottery, I'll be a family man who will live here all my life. My job is a mere formality, basically.
I can be fired... maybe...? I work at a sports club on my neighborhood where my family practically owns the place. Or at least, we've got a lot of history, having owned it in the past.

Now that I think about it, my history is all worthless for this conversation. I don't interact with people nearly enough for them to ever get to know my true personality.

Well, I like it this way. Other forums where I never got used to them my posts may be nice, but I hardly post. Since I like this community, and I have yet to be told I have seriously offended someone (otherwise you would have seen an incredibly apologetic me, which I really would rather not show), I think it's altogether better if I just roam free.
Anyways, I can confirm with real life experience as well, people never get to truly know me until they've heard me go on a sarcasm-filled commenting spree.

Though I don't recall throwing too many insults around, exception being during the grumpy Penguin disease.
Posts on this thread are a mere caricature, however, as they have been for a long time now.
