  1. Honestly I was just messing around, that is Kanojo-tachi no Ryuugi, a game I tried reading early on in my eroge phase because there was a TL project for it so I was curious. I think that project has become a star in the heavens, though. The truth is it was a little too creepy for me so I would probably play Dracu-Riot instead (it looks a lot milder) if I weren't already playing Noble Works which has the same game style as Dracu Riot but it has ojou-samas which I like better than vampire girls.
  2. Whatever these Sakura games lack in their intrinsic value, it makes up for it in entertainment value watching VN fans go ballistic whenever they release a new one
  3. Well I basically agree with you in a case when it has nothing to do with them. So let's disregard the vague stuff about fan patches in general and that it may hurt Japanese developers' overall opinion or whatever. How could anyone ever be sure, so you'd have to stop all fan patches completely, which is unreasonable. But now suppose we're inquiring about games that they are actually both willing and able to commericalize, then it'd be reasonable, right? Assuming we could get a direct answer (after a reasonable amount of research time on the company's side, during which you could keep on translating): Yes, we CAN and WILL commercialize your patch, so do not release it yourself, or no, we WILL NOT or CANNOT commercialize your patch, so you are free to do what you want (or realistically, as "free" as you were before) And yes, I guess you would have to inquire of each company separately, but if they will all give a straight answer, what's the problem? (I know that's a big "If")
  4. What's the point of a post just talking about french fries, if you aren't going to tell me where I can find them and how to eat them?
  5. Sorry, no exceptions. Either you hang with us elitists, or you play games like "Big Bro Sharing."
  6. Well, even simple words do have to be translated to some extent.. ああ generally corresponds to English "oh" as in "Oh, I forgot!" Whereas おお, like English "Whoa", generally has more of a surprised quality behind it, as in "Whoa, that's impressive!" I don't consider that much to be localization, though. Ham-handed localization is more like someone says "Ichiro-kun doko?" And they write "Ichiro, where in the world did you run off to?"
  7. Localization is unnecessary. Just translate it and give me what they said, that's it. Just make sure it fits within the usage rules of English. Don't make the characters sound Western. Regular watchers of anime/readers of manga will understand the nuances of what Japanese people say, they don't have to have it spelled out for them what an American or whatever would do under the same circumstances and risk one of those WTF moments like Satsuki mentioned. This is one of the reasons why I learned Japanese.
  8. I noticed it calls out "finished" and "full" patches as bad. So, all I have to do is to do a partial patch, then offer it to the VN publishers, right? If they accept, then people will get the game anyway. At some point. If they decline, then I've done my duty and can continue working on it myself, right? Am I interpreting it correctly?
  9. Well, since most people are gonna talk about opinions on the VN's, I'll tell you what I found amusing. First, that apparently people are generally ok with digital downloads and DRM for their purchased games. Secondly, that women prefer Macs. (How come?)
  10. I have actually yet to rate anything on vndb, I'll get around to it one of these days. Hopefully. Probably, my apathy reflects my dislike of not only numeric scoring, but reviews and critics in general; I want synopses, screenshots, and factual descriptions. And I don't want anyone else's bias detracting from my enjoyment (or my vexation, if it comes to that). So, the only use I have for scoring on vndb is, not to influence what I play, but to check up on other members and see if they liked any of the games I liked. Therefore, you might worry that you're off by 1 or 2 points in your scoring, but that makes no difference for the way I look at it...I just sort people's lists by score and look for the general trends...
  11. My plan for this spring is to put Noble Works on the back burner for a little while to concentrate on some games to play w/o a text hooker--I feel like I want a little challenge. I finally got around to finishing Dream Club Zero...really fun game, Mian was my clear favorite though. Since it's 95% dialogue, playing without a text hooker has never really been an issue. Someday I'd like to try playing this game with real sake. That should make those drinking contests interesting. Looked at Iinazuke as a possible transition game but I was looking up some fancy word practically every sentence--this game is not so good for students, who have a limited vocabulary. Would be different with a text hooker. I think I've got one now, though-- Nanatsu-iro Drops Pure. I just played through a whole session of it, and during that time, looked up maybe 5 words. So I think I'm going with this one. This'll be good for a transition to non-JParser reading. Also, every time Sumomo is on the verge of tears, I'll take a drink of sake (for some reason I have sake on the mind tonight)
  12. I don't expect that. Whatever it is...if I'm going to play it, and if it's got lots of text to read, then I want it to be readable. Some nukige are worth reading, anyway. Any visual-novel-style game that isn't worth reading the text, isn't worth playing...you've just got yourself an expensive hentai image / sound gallery at that point.
  13. I see. Well I hope you preface your rants to him with "Riddle me this, Batman." (I would.)
  14. Picture of your typical visual novel localization team Also, I was ranting about Mangagamer before Rooke got here (I wonder if I can find those posts...it was back in the Da Capo / Shuffle days)
  15. I've got anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder and in general it's true that "willpower" doesn't do very much with this sort of thing. I'm avoiding SSRI's for the time being. I'll tell you a little of what I do. Deep breathing/relaxation helps me. So does physical exercise, as long as it's enough to make me feel a little tired. Mental exercise (programming, translation) or attempting a real-time activity that leaves no room for hesitation (play an instrument or play high-speed video games). I also do meditation. Speaking of which... Of course I am aware that the problem is with my physical "brain" rather than my logical "mind". So I agree that one should not try to separate "mind" from "brain" in treating anxiety problems. But. there is another dualism that is rather more important: the material and the spiritual. In other words, not body and mind, but body and soul. If you are one of the people who can acknowledge this, then there is another source from which you can draw strength--something not dependent on your own mental willpower. (But that is another story...)
  16. Yeah apparently it's just not in the cards for me to play Love Live. I just found out that on my tablet the A/V sync varies depending on when I play the game! That's a nasty deal-breaker and I have never seen anything like that before. (P.S. I got that tablet free and I'm not about to go out and actually buy one and I don't have a smart phone) I tried Osu but it was mouse-driven, so NG And the only other Love Live game is for Vita which I don't have, and it's not on the compatibility list for Playstation TV which my friend has, so... I'll leave you guys alone now :-)
  17. You know you're probably right, I guess I really wanted a full-blown Love Live console game, not a mobile game with memory constraints...
  18. Time for my two cents on this since so many people value my opinion. As if that were possible. I finally got around to playing this on my junk tablet--after a couple of false starts ("illegal access detected" msg, and the fact that I was somehow subjected to a tutorial before I got to adjust the timing (which A/V sync is apparently way off on my junk tablet)) Left me feeling lukewarm. This game seems to require a lot of commitment, right? And as much as I like the characters and would like to see the various stories and images... But the game itself, oy vey... I just don't care for this rhythm game. There are no videos that play in the background are there...I thought there would be... And then, I really just don't like touch screen rhythm games. I like the feeling of furiously pushiing actual buttons. I like the tactile feedback. And it's missing that feeling of "this game is cool enough to be worth getting good at". I really like the feel of games like Project Diva or Pop'n Music. But I'm just not feeling it for this one. I'm kind of picky though I guess. I dislike Osu, too. So the question is, would I put up with a mediocre rhythm game just because it's cute girls and likeable songs like in the Love Live anime? I don't know. I have a feeling I'm fated to ignore School Idol Festival just like those people who enjoy the Touhou characters but don't want to play the actual STG's...

  21. Yeah I can see how Saki would be confusing if you hadn't played mahjong before... unlike karuta, I had played mahjong before (because there's no computer or console from Japan that doesn't have some sort of mahjong game on it)
