Hey everyone.   I know I don't get to make it around to Fuwanovel much(I'm trying, I swear), but I wanted to come by and give out some tickets for the creative sorts on the forums.
The web conference is running this coming Saturday and it covers a variety of visual novel development topics (largely content writing this year) and I have a few tickets to give out.

If you haven't heard of it, the schedule and talk details are over here: https://vnconf.com/schedule/
The tickets are first come first serve.   Just let me know if you're interested and how I can reach out to you, and I'll get you set up!

Apologies for the half year wait since last episode. This week we talked about the rather sensitive topic of Music in visual novels. No guest this episode. As usual, you can find it on our blog.

How do you all feel about music in VNs? Is the soundtrack important to you, or does it not make a huge difference? Are there any VNs that you feel had an especially effective soundtrack overall? What are some of your favorite tracks? Any least favorites?

Hah, I wouldn't mind to see EVNs grow in a similar manner. But who would be the Key of the West?
Well, I know nothing of old VNs, so I can't contribute to the discussion, but I enjoy the premise. If only me or @Palas could DBZ-style fuse with @kivandopulus for an hour, I'm sure the combined knowledge would effect in a dozen or two of perfect analogies.

Palas reacted to HonorificsSurvey in (8/1 update) Results of the honorifics survey
Purpose of the survey: Find out the preference for honorifics in JP->EN translated VNs
Target group: People who are interested enough in VNs to be a part of a major VN discussion community
Communities approached: 4chan, Fuwanovel, Reddit, VNDB, and various Discord servers
Survey duration: July 17 to July 31, 2018
    Sample size: 752 people
Subsample of Fuwanovel respondents: 62 people
Link to the questions, possible answers to each question, and graphs made from raw data by Google:
    https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdC78xb3vobwtZJRHVY9ITMQtED3Xn15kvT2kaOghBoedA8GQ/viewanalytics
Link to my excel sheet with the raw data, analyzed data, and all the graphs I made with the analyzed data:
    https://mega.nz/#!u0kl2C6b!3f_ZD3AG_k9aEW-iElozzleB54-x6UJkUqWNyUPZvic
    How the analysis was done:
The main source for the graphs are the answers people gave in the "What is your reason for picking the last answer the way you did?" question. I fell back to the short answer when things weren't clear. There are several cases when the short and long answers clearly contradicted each other. I put comments to some of them.
    Setting split:
Having been through quite a few of these conversation myself, I know setting is the most common reason why people change their minds on the presence of honorifics in the text. This was confirmed by the results and the respondents' comments.

    The results:
    Starting with Chart #1
We can see 75% of the respondents prefer honorifics to be kept in the translated text when the setting of the game is Japan (including current Japan, historical Japan, future Japan, alternative universe Japan, or fantasy land heavily based on Japan). The most commonly stated reasons for this preference include:
Ability to see the same nuances and character relations as the Japanese readers; Some honorifics which replace names OR conversations which play with honorifics are untranslatable without heavy re-writing; Simple fondness for honorifics (As part of character moe, fetish, etc.); Desire to see the original writer's vision in the work; Discrepancy between voice and text in names (honorifics being a part of how characters address each other)
5% of the respondents want honorifics kept in the translated text only when certain conditions are met. The most commonly stated examples are:
Relevance to the plot (e.g. feudal Japan, used honorifics give some foreshadowing); There is a conversation about honorifics in the VN itself; To preserve the moe factor or sexual appeal of some honorifics which replace the name entirely (Senpai, Onii-chan, etc.)
11% of the respondents have no preference or leave it up to the translator's preference
9% of the respondents want honorifics removed from the translated text, stating the following reasons for their preference:
Honorifics are not a part of the English language - leaving them in is the same as leaving any other untranslated text; Desire for the translation to read as if it was originally written in English; Good translators are able to show the nuances through other means than honorifics; No reason to see them in text when readers can hear them

Moving on to Chart #2, we can see a significant dip in the "keep" camp when it comes to settings which are not Japan. Examples of those would be: Isekai VNs, fantasy world VNs (which are not based on Japan), VNs set in historical or alternative universe Europe/West. However, the majority of respondents (52%) still want honorifics to be kept in those settings. The reasons for their preference are the same as stated above.
8% of the respondents want honorifics kept in the translated text only when certain conditions are met. All the examples listed above still apply. What should be noted, however, is how some respondents differentiated between isekai, fantasy, and western setting, with some outright stating that honorifics should be always kept in isekai (Such as Koihime Musou or Newton to Ringo no Ki) and others wanting them kept in fantasy (Such as Evenicle or Kamidori Alchemy Meister). Medieval or modern western fiction (like Fata Morgana no Yakata) was not mentioned in these replies, leading me to believe people's desire for honorifics in such titles is smaller.
12% of the respondents have no preference or leave it up to the translator's preference.
28% of the respondents want honorifics removed in a non-Japanese setting. From this, we can see a major move from the "keep" camp to the "remove" camp. A 19 percentage point gain from the people who voted that they want honorifics kept in a Japanese setting, yet they want them removed/replaced in a non-Japanese one. These people have the following reasons for why their opinion is different: Breaking the immersion - Japanese is likely not the "real" language of the world/country they're in, so it makes no sense for them to use honorifics; There are more likely to be English equivalents for honorifics when you have the option of using old English in the translation.

(scroll down for comments, open the image for a larger version)

Now I will use the other data I collected to show what has and does not have impact on the preference for honorifics.
First, here are the preferences for Fuwa only. A lot less people want honorifics kept in all settings (14 and 15 percentage points below average), with a very large group of people wanting them to be always removed in non-Japanese setting.
Next up, I split the respondents into several groups based on how long they have been reading visual novels (this is global data, not just Fuwanovel). I initially thought newcomers to VNs would be the biggest opponents to honorifics, due to them not being used to seeing them in text or even not understanding them. However, it is exact opposite. This goes to show that while these people are new to VNs, they are certainly not new to Japanese culture in general. It is very likely that most of the people who read VNs started with other forms of media such as anime or manga. Other than this, there is nothing special to say. All the other groups are pretty close to the average with their replies.
I also made groups based on number of completed titles, as the length of reading VNs and number of completed titles don't seem to be connected at all. For example, a large number of people who have been reading VNs for over 5 years have only read 25 or less (translated) VNs. In my opinion, you just need hands-on experience with localized VNs to see the real state of the translation scene, what are the realistic expectations for translators, and what are the common roadblocks in localization of honorifics. Anyway, you can see the charts in the picture. What stands out the most is the 101+ completed VNs chart (I merged 101-200 and 200+ because 200+ was a very small subsample). The number of people who want honorifics kept in Japanese settings is about 8 percentage points above average, but the number of people who want honorifics removed in non-Japanese settings is 10 percentage points above average.

(scroll down for comments, open the image for a larger version)

And here are the other statistics I got from doing the survey. Left is Fuwa, right is global. People here have been reading VNs for longer than average, are more likely to know Japanese, and read more VNs in general. You also love cute things.
Note: Obviously there is an overlap between some of the communities, so these charts based on community might not be completely accurate, but I posted it all over the place at around the same time, which means the place you saw it first is likely the one you frequent the most.

Personally, the game felt really pretentious so I had to drop it pretty early on. Couldn't really stomach the fact that I would have to go through another 30 hours of that stuff. Though, from all the things I've heard about it, it seems to have a little bit from every corner of the universe.
I'll probably give it another chance in a couple years, but that time I'm definitely turning Zakuro's voice off.

Well, the thing is... not everyone thinks this is the "best VN ever made". People have different tastes. Even ignoring the horrible Steam description that does a poor job selling the game, Subahibi is not a game for everyone, for many reasons. It doesn't appeal to the Steam crowd at all. It doesn't matter how great you say it is, I can't see someone that plays VNs mainly for moe anime waifus and ecchi ever thinking this is a masterpiece, even if they do end up buying it.

Well, I'm not exactly surprised that it didn't do well. If you look at the Steam page it 'looks' like run of the mill school life moege 3728, just with outdated art.
And if you the look at the story synopsis you get:
What the heck is that supposed to tell me?
And the more detailed description is so bizarre that it doesn't really make it better. Someone who isn't a VN insider would never get the idea that this is something worth reading.
Apparently only the initial sales of Tokyo Babel weren't that good, but it picked up momentum afterwards. Conjueror made a twitter statement regarding that some time ago, that didn't sound like disappointing sales at all. Shadows of Pygmalion probably didn't sell that well though. But Fata Morgana did EXTREMELY well according to MangaGamer - I've no idea where you heard the opposite. It just wasn't a hit in Japan. Not sure about Ghakthun though, but if Steam Spy is still any guideline then both Tokyo Babel and Gahkthun sold about 10.000 copies just on Steam, not counting the copies sold at the MG store.
And there are VN's that did pretty well, like Dies Irae for example which did fantastic with more than 50.000 sales. And there are more like Grisaia, Nekopara, etc. So could we please not judge overall VN sales just by one flop?!

Not only is "NTR" a term distorted from its original meaning so it's used improperly, it's also too much of a community-specific term which we're avoiding so anyone can understand the filters they can use. We're looking into including the possibility to exclude cheating/adultery though.

Excluding those VNs that you've already voted on would be a great feature, but it's tricky to implement as I'd either need to maintain a copy of all the vndb data on the recc site or else load up vndb pages in real-time, both of which are a bit messy. It's something I'll keep on the list as potential features, but I can't promise it'll be added.
As for the full size screenshots, that's something on my to-do list, I'll hopefully have it up in the next few days.

Pardon the late discovery, but thanks for the recommendation site! I'm really impressed with how much effort went into this.
You know, I've been meaning to get back into reading VNs again, so I might just make a little game out of cycling through the VNs in the order I've been given. Guess that means my next game will be Demonbane! Which is something I've been interested in, actually. The VN after that is YU-NO. o.O Hmm, I did not think that VN would fall under the mystery category. And now I'm interested.
But oh man, seeing Rewrite come up as my top recommendation is a bit painful. By every right, this should definitely be placed highly on the list, because there were so many ways I could've fallen in love with it. But my reason for hating it is mostly related to my preferences in narration, which I'm pretty sure can't be picked up through automation, so I won't fault the system for that.
Can't say the untranslated selection is entirely useless to me either since I should be reading untranslated VNs in about a month or so (I'm almost halfway done with the grammar guide). Might take a bit longer to read some of the harder works, but I'll still hold onto the list.

    Hello, Fuwa!
We've always been a community with nice discussions, a great recommendations subforum and people who like very different VNs across all genres, languages and styles. So it's about time this shared knowledge and warm, vibrant community produces something everyone can use to browse through VNs. This is why we're now developing a Fuwa Recommendation Program!
It's like a recommendation chart, except it isn't a chart but a quiz! We want to provide recommendations based on the user's tastes, general preferences and experience - from the newbie-friendly starter VNs to the super specific untranslated VN for the oldbie. So we need a big, diverse and interesting list from which the program can generate a shortlist for you. And you're very welcome to suggest new titles!
Currently, we're at 301 titles, 50 of which are EVNs and 55 of which are untranslated:
VNDB's most popular 200 titles, except sequels Recommendations from @BunnyAdvocate, @Plk_Lesiak, @MaggieROBOT, @Clephas, @Zalor and @Zakamutt Every VN that received a favorable FuwaReview (4* or 5*) Check the current list out here and post titles you want to see recommended to everyone that you're not seeing on the list!
Thanks to everyone who is making this possible, especially BunnyAdvocate (once again bringing amazing algorithms and info to the table), without whom this wouldn't be possible at all. I hope we can bring all kinds of VN players and readers together for this.
EDIT: The site is now ready! Access it here. You can keep recommending VNs, as we'll add more over time.

I just wanted to give a little update as it's been a week or so since we ran the sorter quiz. We got nearly 20k votes in total, and ended up with a pretty great ranking in my opinion, so thank you to everyone who voted and suggested VNs! Unfortunately there were a few last minute suggestions we weren't able to add as the bulk of the voting happened over the first couple of days, but we hope to add more VNs to the site over time.
We've got most of the coding done on the main site, we just need to verify the data and collect some additional screenshots etc, so I expect it'll take around a week before we're ready to go live. Here's a little preview of how it looks:

A big shout out to @Emi for her help in producing the visual design of the site, it looks absolutely gorgeous!

@Fiddle While I love the screenshots, to just clarify Palas point: those of us who made this site aren't Fuwa staff members, and it isn't hosted on Fuwanovel's servers. Emi bought the fuwanovel.se domain that we're using just last week. We wanted to brand it with the Fuwanovel name in recognition that this new site is run by fans in collaboration with the wider VN community. There are no ads, no affiliate links, and no sponsorships. It would be nice to have the support of the main Fuwanovel site admins, but that's not currently the situation.

It's not on the first post, but I think it's worth mentioning that you can add mini-reviews/commentaries in each VN's page. So why not enter Fata Morgana’s page and write how great the characters are or write in Grisaia’s page that the comedy is really good? It really help newbies using the site to know the best parts of the VNs! So you guys still can make the site even better!
