Uh, I really don't get the extreme pessimism over here... Key just released Harmonia a while ago, a Japanese VN that was released in English before Japanese. If you don't call that making something new, I don't know what is. Why is everyone pretending Key doesn't make anything original at all anymore

babiker reacted to InvertMouse in Attending my dad's funeral this afternoon
Thank you so much everyone. I am back from the cremation ceremony, and as I mentioned last night, I really feel at peace. Maybe I'll curl into a ball later and cry at night, but for now, I'm ready to move forward.
A lot of you lost loved ones when you were still kids. I can't imagine how I'd be able to deal with that. For me, I had my dad until I'm past 30, so I'd already call that good fortune. I'm independent, my dad's taught me a lot, and his death has taught me even more. Easily one of the most important person in my life. I don't care about celebrities. Guys like Dad are the ones I love and care about.
My dad wanted a Buddhist style funeral, so we granted him that wish. Hearing so many people chant for him helped me settle my emotions. I still know nothing about spirits, but if the Buddha exists (or whichever God the individual has faith in), then the ceremony exists to say hey, please take this man's spirit back to your side, and whatever happens after that is up to the Gods. When I think of it like that, it's like the Gods have lent me this spirit for 70+ years, and now it's time for him to return to a better place. Maybe wishful thinking, but I can let it all go when I think this way. Perhaps some day I'll end up wherever he is now as well. I guess this is just part of the journey in our circle of life, assuming such a thing is real.
The funeral staff handed us all tissues when it's time for us to say goodbye for the last time, but I didn't end up needing them. There were wet eyes but no tears falling. I feel so determined, so peaceful. My dad knows what dreams I have in life, and now I want him to watch me as I chase after them.
Thank you for all of your thoughts! Happy to hear more .

babiker reacted to Narcosis in Plot vs Writing
Let's deconstruct the terms. What does "plot" mean? It's basically the story idea, given a structural form. Writing is the process of bringing that idea into fruition by putting it into the right words. Ideas are many and they are disposable. You can have the greatest ideas ever, but if you're unable to physically manifest them into reality, they will remain what they were - just some thoughts swimming inside your head. On the other hand, good plot tends to achieve far greater impact with equally great writing. I agree with @fun2novel on that point, but the truth is you can't really have a good story without a good plot, or even lack of thereof. Still, you can even turn the most generic and casual of daily activities into incredibly interesting situations with good writing. You can even write sex scenes, that won't look like porn at all.

I was watching an election where:
    1) Trump promised to contest the results if he lost no matter how he lost. And was also preemptively proclaiming voter fraud in the absence of any possible evidence of it. Which, as this night likely shows, no such fraud was taking place regardless.
    2) Hillary Clinton didn't give a concession speech.
Excuse me if I look at these two events and consider one side a poorer loser than the other. The poorer loser ended up winning, which means his worst side ended up not being exposed, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there. The original post I was responding to was proclaiming democrats poor losers and republicans graceful in comparison, when the republican candidate was promising to drag our country through the mud if he didn't get his way.
Now, I respect your right to prefer trump and to voice your preference. But the election is over, dude. The democrats lost. You don't have to spin every single event in Trump's favor anymore. The battle is over and you can cease fire. The least I would expect is for you to be able to look at the facts as they are. But I suppose your post proves that above all else, Trump's supporters are poor winners as well. Continue sticking it to those filthy SJWs, man.

His word choice was simply off.  He meant "ridiculous" rather than "retarded".  Common mistake among teens.
Let's try again with proper expression.  "Learning a language just to play video games is ridiculous."
But that doesn't address the common complaint, which is that whenever untranslated games are brought up and people pine about playing them, they're usually told to "go learn Japanese".  So to further refine that: "Expecting someone to go learn a language just to play video games is ridiculous."

If the thread was solely about that question, then the referencing of the argument wouldn’t have been needed. The identities of the participants in the conversation wouldn’t have been needed. All it does is shame a certain participant while putting his ‘lad’ in the best possible light. That the section of the discussion presented was dreadfully out-of-context backs up the idea that the thread wasn’t solely about presenting a question.
Think of it this way - the question as presented is woefully retarded as a discussion point. Why? Because in a vacuum the idea that ‘learning anything is stupid’ is itself a stupid idea. Because you get something (the knowledge of another language) for nothing (or almost nothing.) Hooray, a new skill and no downside, what's to discuss? Nothing, that's the point. Context provides boundaries and pay-offs. Context provides scope.
    “Is learning a language stupi-”
    “Of course not”
“If it means destroying your marriage”
    “Oh”
That this context was not provided not only makes the thread a circle-jerk for people who learn Japanese, it deprives it of any useful discussion. Which was probably the point, Nosebleed. That is, you’ve been conned into participating in a circle-jerk for reasons that are suspect and possibly mean-spirited.
Doesn’t that annoy you at all? :S

It's definitely a real possibility, and it was disguised because the OP provided a very select amount of context. I'm automatically suspicious when context is cherry picked the way it was, because context is king and the meaning of something changes drastically depending on that context. It's manipulating, TBH.

Climate change is predicted to increase global strife as people are displaced by more frequent and more intense natural disasters, as well as gradually changing weather patterns.  Competition for dwindling resources will be inevitable.
The next world war could change the face of our planet.  For everyone's sake, we need to prolong the current peace as long as possible--or at least until I've died of natural causes.  Then go nuts, for all I care.

babiker reacted to Darklord Rooke in What's the general opinion on English made/OEL VN's?
    Not particularly.
People don’t defend ‘bad’ OELVNs. However, people who come from a Japanese eroge background will tend to put a heavy emphasis on a) sex and b) art, and therefore dismiss OELVNs out of hand. People from a Japanese storytelling background will put emphasis on c) play time. This causes problems because these are not areas the industry outside Japan excel in.
OELVNs tend to take the medium in a different direction than Japanese VNs. Japanese VNs are heavy on story and light on agency in games. OELVNs place a higher emphasis on agency, utilising to a fuller extent the ‘choice’ mechanic that the Japanese developers tend to use as a gimmick, but sacrifices overall length.
Because of this, many people from the Japanese world will deride OELVNs for being crap because they don’t follow the priorities of the Japanese industry. Hypocritically though they then mock them when they’re TOO much like the Japanese industry.
People into VNs for the ‘eroge’ will never like the direction OELVNs are going in. People into VNs for lengthy stories won’t appreciate that (currently) there isn’t the budget to make such things, or if there is more budget is spent on adding branches and consequences rather than length (like a book.)
VNs are one of the unique mediums that can take advantage of non-linear storytelling. Interactive storytelling. Player choice and consequence. OELVNs are heading in a direction where all of these things are explored, Japanese VNs tend to be books with pictures. In the Japanese industry, hardly any of the advantages of the medium are currently being explored, and most VNs can easily be written as books. On the whole it's a stagnant industry. I find the Japanese industry comparatively boring. That is, they don't tell as good a story as a novel, but they want to pretend they are. Maybe one day they'll awaken to the potential of the medium they're writing in and I'll be interested, but at the moment I don't get anything from a Japanese VN that I don't get from a novel.
I can go into more detail, but suffice to say that the OELVN industry is one with incredible potential, is growing rapidly, but is often derided by people unwilling to give it a chance.
That is why they’re defended so vigorously.
PS: I'd apologise for using the dreadful term 'OELVN' so much but alas, there's no suitable other atm.

    It isn't hairsplitting, actually.
Nothing exists in a vacuum, everything exists relative to something else. I do 80 km/hr in my car RELATIVE to the ground. I'm happy RELATIVE to my default condition. This ice cream is tasty RELATIVE to my normal food (and especially when compared to this side of brussel sprouts.) The ball was passed forward relative to the passer, not travelled forward relative to the ground.
When someone describes something as 'meaningless' they usually mean 'meaningless RELATIVE to my ideas of worth and what I perceive to be entertaining and important'. Unless of course they mean 'meaningless' relative to the games goals, but usually they'll explicitly say this in this scenario.
Because the idea of a meaningless activity is relative to the person, it's useless as a general definition of a concept. Each person will have a different definition of the genre.
So just some background material first.
Diablo involves grinding for loot, which tends to be a bit different than grinding for levels. There's not much point grinding for levels in Diablo, when you started the original game people sought to get to nightmare as quickly as possible. You reach the level to unlock nightmare before you finish the game. I don't see much purpose grinding for levels TBH.
Grinding for loot means the consumer is consistently rewarded for his activity, or anticipates the prospect of being rewarded for his activities. This is why so many people get addicted, it's a reward mechanism.
Grinding for levels features no such reward mechanism. It's why it's an inferior mechanic when talking about consumer entertainment. It's inferior because there's nothing to make those activities enjoyable (except possibly a detailed combat system.)
So what is grinding? Grinding for levels is gathering experience points for no other purpose than to gather experience points. When grinding for loot, the sole purpose behind those activities is searching for loot. In Etrian Odyssey the player's purpose is usually to reach the end of a dungeon, it's not grinding. In most Western RPGs there's a purpose other than gathering levels, which makes it not grinding. This isn't splitting hairs, it's getting to what grinding is and why grinding for levels is looked down on.
What about those games where there's set monsters on the map and they don't regenerate? I answered the second question just above.
What makes Fata Morgana an ... English style VN?
Dear Western VNs, feel free to use as much English voice acting as you like. Go long, go hard :3

Instead making another pointless topic, where people will repeat the same things over and over again, why not use search and add something meaningful to one of the already existing topics? Like this one or this one, for example?
