  1. It's amazing how Clephas' opinions on the matter is almost the complete polar opposite of my own. I don't think it's possible to have a difference of opinion this massive.
  2. Lucia's route is really good, I thought, but pretty much irrelevant. Still, it's probably the second best route behind Akane's. Ryukishi07 is just a really good writer.
  3. Going to hell for not liking loli, what kind of bizarro religion is that? I need to know so I can stay far, far away. I did like Shizuru's character though. I found her most interesting when she was more mischievous and going along with Kotorou's schemes, and I wish they played up that side of her more. I think it's important to know why Kotarou's personality is the way it is and why things turn out differently in the Terra route. witch was explaind in moon and Chihaya's routes. Well, kind of.
  4. The Shizuru route doesn't have any real important plot points, you could probably skip most of it and not really miss anything to be honest. The most important part of it is how you get to know Guardian better as an organization, but you'll be learning plenty about them later anyways. The routes with the most relevant plot details are probably Kotori and Akane. Kotori explains a lot about Kotarou's character and Akane gives a lot of explanation about Gaia, the various factions within it, their motivations, the nature of the key, etc.
  5. edit: Okay I'm so spoiler paranoid I'll just put this whole post in a spoiler tag, sorry.
  6. Terra's story is interesting but it basically ditches all of the characters you previously cared about so it's a pretty jarring experience.
  7. Several sites and forums have people who post that stuff, it's all taken from the same source, some 4chan user. He posts every Saturday, here's his latest: http://boards.4chan.org/jp/thread/12073883#p12073883
  8. With absolutely no incentive for him, I don't know why he'd lie about the translation's progress. He has nothing to gain from doing such a thing. Him trolling in that manner makes no sense, either. If anything, it's the opposite, he's trolling the people who think he's stopped while working on it in secret. In the end, it just comes down to there being no reason at all to disbelieve him. Doing otherwise would just be baseless paranoia. At that point, you may as well distrust every single status report from every single active translation out there, what's the difference?
  9. Kotarou is one of my favorite VN protagonists. Partially because he's just so different from the standard. He's an actual genuinely funny guy who is funny because he tries to be, and not just because he's a hopeless idiot that everyone makes fun of. And it's pretty interesting when you find out why he's the way he is. Now, the Kotarou in the final chapter, I didn't like as much. But I count them as almost different people entirely. Edit: For a little bit more on why I like him, I think him being funny is just a small part of it. Really, it's because he has a strong personality in general. Most VN protagonists seem to fall into one archetype, the nice guy who is mostly devoid of any real personality. They're meant to be ciphers for the player, characters players can project themselves onto. So most VN makers intentionally give their protags a weak personality so they can't conflict as much with the players' own emotions. You can barely even call them characters, often. So whenever a VN handles the protagonist differently, I find it really refreshing. Kotarou has more personality than 95% of all other VN protagonists. The downside to this is that you have people like the OP and Clephas who end up finding him annoying. This is natural for anyone if the protagonist's own actions and thoughts conflict with what the players' want out of that character. that's the danger of having a non-cipher character take the leading role.
  10. I preferred the ending before the true one in LB as well, but it somehow feels more complete with the true KEY ending in there as well. LB's ending was handled better just because even though it's kind of the same basic idea in theory, it was ultimately the main characters' hard work that saved the day. It felt like it was earned from the cumulative character growth you've witnessed throughout the story, and that makes it much easier to swallow.
  11. I only watched the anime and about the last couple episodes... yeah, didn't make a whole lot of sense. Like, I kind of got it, but not really. Honestly, I thought it was a terrible ending.
  12. I'm bad at picking just one favorite. I also can't really rank things well, normally. But, in no particular order, the VNs I like the most are probably Steins;Gate, Grisaia no Kaijitsu, Muv-Luv Alternative, Little Busters, and G Senjou no Maou. A bog standard set, I know. If I could read Japanese, I have a feeling that a few of these would be replaced by others. The install isn't even that bad. The real trial is trying to play the original Muv-Luv before MLA. Boy, is that a challenge. It's worth it, though. I don't know how it's possible to do such a complete 180 in terms of quality. Every aspect of MLA is 10x better than MLE and about 5x better than MLU. The only other VNs that come close to that kind of quality jump is maybe Da Capo, where DC1 was mediocre at its absolute best and DC2 was actually really entertaining.
  13. I generally don't like it when people get on a high horse about piracy. I find the manifesto on the main Fuwanovel site kind of silly, to be honest. I do pirate a lot of things, but I also just accept that this is morally wrong and don't try to pretend otherwise. It's also why I try to buy and support the creators when I can.
  14. I guess in a scene where translators are really averse towards retranslating games unless the existing translation is extremely bad, it's really intimidating to pick a popular title to start your TL career on. You don't want to screw up the only translation anyone will ever see for a game everyone wants to play. Nor do you want to commit yourself to a 100k+ line epic if you don't know you're going to follow through, while preventing other TLers from picking it up for the next year or two in the process. Honestly, I wish more translation groups carried your philosophy of starting out small. There are way too many stalled translation projects for high demand games right now but nobody else is picking up because every six months someone says "we're not dead! (but no progress)" (*cough* akatsuki no goei *cough*) I guess I suddenly turned this into an off-topic rant post, sorry.
  15. JAST basically sits on the rights to any Nitro+ game scaring away all of the fan translators, while not actually bothering to translate most of them themselves. Well, mostly because they're slow as molasses. Maybe after the Sumaga team is done they'll move on to Axanael and then Kimi to Kanojo after that. So yeah, in 10 years.
  16. Steam games don't inherently have DRM. There are many that don't have any, and you can just launch the game outside of steam, back up the game folder, and do whatever you do with drm-free games. You also don't pay to be on steam, but they do take a cut from sales, which is what stores tend to do as that's their purpose. Anyways, I would argue that it's absolutely worth them getting on Steam and for many developers the moment they get on steam provides a very high sales boost. For something as recognizable as Steins;Gate, a lot of fans of the anime will suddenly realize there's an english language VN out there and will get interested. But there are companies like JAST who are opposed to selling their games on any digital distribution platforms they don't personally control. See also: Shrapnel Games.
  17. Well, I guess this is somewhat accurate. Actually, there were several different translators who contributed to various parts of it, which can be a bit jarring. It's a wiki project and anyone can go in and contribute translations with minimal supervision. Some I suspect of using massaged machine translations. Or if not, they're just very bad. Additionally, they haven't really started editing the script yet. Not a single portion of the introductory chapter has been fully edited, so you see a lot of basic mistakes. In reality, this is not a complete patch. It's VERY rough.
  18. There is a 0% chance that they just forgot Steam exists and didn't think of it. Some companies just like to keep their products to themselves, not letting anyone else get involved.
  19. I think JAST ditched the DRM they used to use a while ago so there shouldn't be any activation limits or anything like that. As for why they don't just put it on Steam, very good question. Steins;Gate is the kind of VN that could do somewhat well on Steam. The anime was popular in the west and it's pretty light on the romance elements, focusing instead on telling its time travel story. One can only assume that JAST is being unnecessarily stubborn and doesn't want to release the digital version outside of their own services for a while.
  20. You can safely skip Sakaki's route for example and miss absolutely nothing of importance. Grisaia's routes are so independent of eachother that it's not necessarily vitally important to read every one, only the ones with important backstory to them. You can get a fulfilling and satisfying experience in many VNs even if you skip routes. And not all routes are of the same quality. If reading something becomes a chore, then by all means stop because otherwise, what's the point? We don't read VNs out of obligation.
  21. I feel like it's always best to respect the creators' vision. Maybe as a side bonus through the extra menu if that would be at all possible but tampering with the game too much would be going too far. They didn't include that in the final version for a reason, so it's best to respect that.
  22. It's a very popular game within Japan and there's a lot of demand for it outside of Japan, so you can be assured that someone, at some point, will attempt to translate it again. There currently aren't any groups who have announced plans to do so yet, though. Well, Harvest Fiesta is definitely coming next, but after that, who knows. Those other two projects are Liar-Soft steampunk games, and MangaGamer are probably going to announce their intent to translate those soon, which would make Amaterasu choose other projects.
  23. The translator who was working on Baldr Sky is different from the main Amaterasu translator, Ixreec. IIRC, the guy who was TLing Baldr Sky had some RL stuff come up and hasn't been around the scene since. You can consider that project permamently dead.
  24. Please don't go around bugging other TL groups about this. They'll translate based on their own priorities. No one takes requests.
