  1. Well yes, you need to take their taste's into consideration. If they're a guy, or accurately a "dude" or a "bro" you probably should NOT show them something like Madoka or Spice and Wolf. Madoka is unconventional even to people entrenched in the anime scene and as such it can turn casuals or newbies off just because of how strange it is. A person's first impressions of anime will alter the lens through which they view it for a long time to come and more importantly if your first recommendation is too heavy he may wind up discrediting your tastes as being too different from his. The biggest rule of thumb I can give you is if you couldn't imagine the person watching it as a live action television show or in a movie then don't show it. It also helps that the series is in English, just because subtitles are a barrier to enrty. And, since they'd only be watching 3-5 episodes, you need to make sure that the first episodes of the show have a really good hook to them so that, after you've finished showing them it, they'd want to go out and watch it themselves. I don't know if your friend has netflix or whatever, but the most "entry level" shows on there at the moment are Trigun, Samurai Champloo, Full Metal Alchemist (both the original anime and Brotherhood), Soul Eater, and OFCOURSE Attack on Titan. I bring up Netflix just because if your friend already uses it it'll be easier for him to go and watch the episodes on his own then streaming online or torrenting. Out of everything I've mentioned though, I'd really recommend Attack on Titan because I myself have gotten three other people into it just by showing them the first three episodes (yes, it must be the first three because that's where the series really drops). Though, if Netflix isn't a concern, then Baccano!, Black Lagoon, Code Geass, Cowboy Bebop, or Darker than Black come to mind. And if your friend isn't too "bro" or "dude" and likes things that are more clever or witty, you've got quite a space to work with. Clannad, FLCL, or even Last Exile. The key is that none of the anime are too anime and that a normal person who knows nothing of Japanese conventions or perversions will be able to understand it. For example, Steins;Gate. Very, very good, funny, fine English Dub, good characters, but if you're not familiar with the concepts of Harem, Tsundere, Moe, Ecchi, etc, there can be too much too fast coming at you. I know I'm making a lot of presumptions and assumptions here but I really want your friend to like anime and I just want to avoid the culture shock that can happen to people that watch anime and don't get what's going on. EDIT: Oh, I forgot Ghibli films. Light, happy, fairly western, not too violent, very good first time animes.
  2. No good deed is to go unpunished. Justice isn't kind. And the road to hell is paved in good intentions. Plus in your other post you were basically describing holocaust the Visual Novel. Perhaps Hitler-chan could be a heroine?
  3. Would you send me your shoes in the mail so that I can lick the bottoms. orz Thanks man, this worked perfectly.
  4. Had me going there for a second. I was about to label you a sick fuck. Maybe you still are, but can get behind your idea. It seems quite... ahem. Would this novel of intense sex and monster girls have a harem ending?
  5. Firstly, yes, my system local is set to Japan and I'm on windows 7. I downloaded the [Fuwanovel] Yandere torrent, and tried to start it. When I clicked on the YANDERE Application I got this blue screen window of death filled with computer code, a blank game window, and some other little tool bar. But amidst all of the hirgana and whatnot I couldn't read, it said something about the save folder. I went into the save folder, deleted everything in it, then restarted the game. It worked, to an extent, but now I've got new issues. I run the YANDERE application, it plays a little bell tone, and gives me the "CAUTION, there are several grotesque scenes in this work, so those... etc" so the game works up to that point. But at the bottom, where it says click to begin, I click it and it gives me this prompt: What am I doing wrong? The readme.txt talks about replacing the Data.xp3 with the one in the zip but there is no zip file in the torrent. The prompt says something about the game20 file but what? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I just want to bask in unashamed yandere glory.
  6. I'm actually working on a VN right now. I don't want to give away too much and spoil the story, but I'll try and say what I can. Note that the Novel Itself is only about half done so when it is finally released it may be a bit different that I describe here. i'm not the only one working on it after all. First off, it's a yandere visual novel. I find the concept of yandere very appealing. It's a mix of conviction and insanity all in one. I suppose what really interests me is trying to create these absolutely manic and creepy characters both interesting and original. It's easy to say "she's batshit insane, that's why she cut off her boyfriend's cock because he looked at another girl". It's much harder to give them an interesting and believable motivation that isn't just mental illness. It's also pretty easy to have girls go into full Rena with a cleaver insane mode, but much harder to make their behaviors subtle and unsettling in more muted fashions. And it's also much harder to do with three heroines, which is what I'm going for. There's a sister character, a girlfriend character (you actually start the game with a girlfriend), and kind of love rival character. Of course these are really just their relationships to the characters. As far as personality goes I think they will respectively be something along the lines of doting, intelligent, and energetic. But really those are just one dimensional summaries of their characters. Appearance and aesthetic area also very important. Too many visual novels look like they could have all been drawn by the same person, the art styles are so homogeneous. I'm not saying it's bad to draw an average looking character, but I don't want them in my novel. So what I'm planning for (my sister is actually working on the art (no, she does not call me onii-chan) as it's planned for now, but that may change) is to make the characters look like they're paper cut outs of drawings, kinda like the witch's den scenes from Madoka Magica or the execution scenes from Danganronpa. I also prefer games with text like Tsukihime that covers the whole screen (there's a term for it but I can't quite remember). I find that that technique actually allows you to see more of the art, because your eyes are always focused on the screen where the art is, instead of just at the bottom of the screen where none of the art can be appreciated. I also don't like save, load, skip keys covering the screen, so there will be a single master key that opens the menu for all of these choices. Sound is also very important. I've got quite a few pieces of the soundtrack picked out and there isn't a single one that could be called "happy" sounding. They're muted at best and downright droning at worst. This is not a happy game. This is a game made to eat at people's very souls. Music can accomplish that faster than any other medium (ever listen to the full Metal Machine Music album?) and as a supplement to my own visual novel I think it should be fairly effective. It's all classical sounding though. Things that are inherently rhythmic or arrhythmic like flavors of techno just don't do solemn well. Sex? Nah, not really. I don't have much interest in the sex of visual novels honestly. A few visual novels do it quite well and make it a part of the story (Forest comes to mind) but this novel isn't really about sex so much as it is about kinds of love. True love, deep love, false love, etc. As for plot and premise goes, it's writhe with twists, turns, flash backs, flash forwards, etc. It's supernatural but there's very little emphasis on the magic or anything like that. Rather, the supernatural dealings are used as a medium to pose hypothetical scenarios for the characters to act out. As far as the magic goes, I actually take a few pages from Type-Moon's book here. Magus families, power comes from eyes (and exclusively eyes), different families have different kinds of magic, etc. But it's all in modern times though. As for routes, three girls, three routes. A good and bad ending for each girl and one other ending called the worse ending. The branching and flagging system is a bit different though. If you miss your chance with the first girl, you continue a common arc to the second, and if you miss her then the third, and if you miss her you get the worse end. However, good endings can only be obtained by setting flags obtained prior to entering the heroines routes. I'll try and stay away from blind choices (IE, go to roof or cafeteria to eat lunch, depending on where you go you'll trigger flags for certain girls, even though you had no way of anticipating where the girls would be) and keep most of the choices moral or something like that. But it won't be filled with too many choices. I have my own story to tell after all. Sigh, this post is much longer that I intended it to be and I don't want to delete it. Well, here you go. This is what I'm working on, this is what I want to see.

    11eyes

Nah, I can't understand Japanese and CG sets are easy to find so there's not much point to it. Though if you can understand it I must ask, how is it?
  8. I watched the 11eyes anime a few years ago and it was an immaculate piece of shit. It's just not a good anime, even if the second to last episode was a bit interesting (the people that've seen it will know what I'm talking about). But if it's anything like Chaos;Head or School Days, that means it's probably a good visual novel. But I can't find any downloads or torrents. Does anyone know of one? VNDB says there was a Thule Translation done in England, but I may not be reading it right.
  9. Well, I finally did it. It was a hard fought battle but I think I've got My Anime List up to date. It's still calibrating, so the amount og series completed on my profile is not how many I've actually put in there. But it'll get there I'm sure. Boy am I gald I kept a list of everything I watch and read (among other things) otherwise this would have been impossible. Now all I need is a cool signature.
  10. Yeah, those are all on my backlist. I'm actually using this list as my biggest reference point, so it's a bit of a loooong backlog. https://forums.fuwanovel.net/index.php?/topic/2151-50-translated-vns-you-should-read-before-you-die/ It's certainly not perfect though (why you no haz Shuffle!?) so if anyone has any recommendations not on that list I'll gladly take them. I am here to leech and learn afterall.
  11. Really, no Angel's Egg love? No one?

    yanderes!

Hey guys, just thought I'd drop this here for y'all. It's a yandere visual novel made by a guy named Zero-Q who actually does the Mirai Nikki Abridged series (which you should also check out, as it's quite good). http://games.renpy.org/game/yandere.shtml
  13. Hmmm. A full top ten. It'll be hard. Let's see. As a rule, I'll keep it one power from one series and leave generic abilities out. 10. Kandata String (Needless) Ever since I saw Walter C. Dornaise kicking ass and taking names with garrote wire I've had something damn near a fetish when it comes to people who fight with indestructible strings. 9. Vectors (Elfen Lied) There's something pretty wicked cool having invisible death tendrils made for killing and screwing on your back. 8. Death Perception (Tsukihime and Kara no Kyoukai) Similar to Vectors, Death Perception is good for killing and screwing (especially if there's a cat involved) and, as you've noted before, seeing death is just oh so cool. 7. An EB-0, 1961 model (FLCL) This is the guitar of the Pirate King himself. I'm not talking some stretchy goofball who had to go through like six seasons until he got a musician on board. No fool, I'm talking the true King of Pirate Kings, Atomsk. 6. Magical Girl Powers (Any Magical Girl Series) I'm a dude but should a cute little animal with a steely stare ever want to make a contract with me wherein I have to sell my soul, dignity, and change my gender to become a magical girl I'd do it in heart beat. 5. Row Row Fight the Powah Powers (Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann) I shouldn't even have to explain my self here. 4. AT Field (If You Don't Know What This is From Your Power Level is Two Low to Even be Reading This) "Have you Lilum not realized that this thing you call an AT field is a manifestation of my very soul, an inviolable barrier upon which none may enter?" 3. Accelerator Powers (Index) This is just a given. Really, straight up Akira/Shin Sekai Yori levels of telekineses are preferred but I did say I'd stay away from generic powers. 2. Death Note (Death Note) Despite the fact that I like to believe I've matured past the giant teen angst power trip that is Death Note, I'm not so jaded as to believe I'm above the desire to control that kind of power. And yes, I'd go full Kira on the world. I was siding with him the whole time. 1. All Fiction (Medaka Box) This is really the ultimate power. It's the ability to make anything nothing. Even if you die, you can simply undo it. Your opponent controls gravity? Fuck just getting rid of his power, just get rid of the existence of gravity itself! Who needs it? I'm actually really surprised I haven't seen this yet. I'd also like to take the opportunity to recommend the Medaka Box manga because it's pretty big on crazy awesome powers. For example, there's a character whose power is based around the word "therefore". As in, “an aircraft carrier is a giant, dense, piece of metal therefore I can cut it in half with a pair of safety scissors”. Yeah, and that's just the tip of the ice burgh with Medaka Box.
  14. Clannad, like Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate, and School Days are actually towards the bottom of my backlog pile. I've seen the animes and while I know the VNs are probably far superior, I really just want to experience something fresh that I've never heard of before first. I did love the Clannad anime though. I've only seen season one and even that had me balling my eyes out.
  15. In all honesty things like this make me a little sad. Go Go Nippon is, and admittedly this is pretty harsh, a piece of generic, gratuitous, pandering, and boring piece of crap. Steam has a lot of crappy games. But luckily most of them don't get too much exposure because they're not enjoyable crap. Well, they're a tleast not so crappy that it's fun to pick at them. But Go Go Nippon is special. It's weaboo crap and as such a lot of people are picking at it. Star_, Jesse Cox, Game Grumps, and I'm sure more. The thing is that if a visual novel gets this kind of bad exposure more and more people are just going to think that visual novels are these boring pandering pieces of moe garbage. I think that's pretty contrary to what Fuwanovel is going for. Make visual novels popular in the west. This kind of game, with this kind of exposure, is going to do the exact opposite.
  16. Oh dear lord, it's a bit late at night and my caffein cut off was a few hours ago as I write this so plese forgive me if this all comes off as being less than articualte. So, first thing's first, hello there. How are you? Me? Tired, very tired. But excited. Fuwanovel seems like a nice place to hang out. People aren't afraid to show off their anime swag or weaboo expertise and I'd say that's a good thing. We're all here to have fun, get off, laugh, etc. Plus no one is going to get on their high horse about how lolicon is evil, which is good because I don't like breaking out my anti-anti-lolicon copypasta more than once a week. So this website seems like a cool place to hang. So I'd like to spend a little time here, if y'all don't mind. Fair warning, I can come off as self-absored, self-assured, self-entitled, and selfish. But I'll try to tone it down for my dear senpais. Ah, so a little about me and stuff. I really haven't played very many visual novels to be honest. I've read plenty of classic books, played many cherished video games, watched most of the most acclaimed anime, and skimmed a few manga but I have not read too many VNs. I've read Shuffle, Dys. Systems, Amorous Professor Cherry, and Yandere-Chan (really worth checking out). That being said though I am slowly but surely working through a backlog of VNs on my hardrive that consists of the most commonly recommended and praised VNs. So I'm getting there. But I say that because this next statement is going to come across as a bit off. I am making a visual novel. Not translating, not porting, making. I am trying to make a visual novel from scratch. It's a three heroine, supernatural, psychological, gloomy, yandere piece of glorified self gratification. The writing is well under way (I write a lot and have even written a full 65k word book thar is in the works of being published), and music licenses are easy to come by, but I could really use help with the art. I can't draw. If anyone is interested in helping me with the art, I'm sure we can work something out. Well that's about all I can to say for now. I hope my time here is well spent. See y'all around. EDIT: I did want to link to the Yandere-Chan visual novel by Zero-Q. Here it is: http://games.renpy.org/game/yandere.shtml
