  1. Ah ok, that makes sense. I always thought it weird, especially given how freaky some of the desire scenes are. I suppose Eve's sequel, Adam the Double Factor, fits the bill of mostly adult cast (+ awful localisation) too. Although if you haven't played Eve, you'd be mad to play ADF, its hardly recommendable. Would love to try the retconned version that Uchikoshi was involved in, but theres zero chance of even an awful localization and my Japanese is virtually non-existent.
  2. Lol. Never knew that. For some reason I always thought C's Ware did it in-house. Maybe I'm confusing things with the (equally awful) Hirameki/KID Ever 17 release. I always found it odd that Burst Error heavily cut/censored, whereas Divi-Dead and Desire aren't. Garbled Monica Lewinsky jokes aside, I do love those old PC-98 games. Wish they got more love
  3. Desire and Burst Error are classic. Shame whoever responsible for the 'localisation' deserves to be shot. Also a lot clicking around the maps to advance the story, but worth the struggle IMHO.
  4. I'd be shocked (and disappointed) if there isn't at least a text log and some sort of tips list. Telltale format isn't the best for complex plots, it really encourages locking you into decisions more than exploring every path. Its a sad fact that a lot of people find reading a 'barrier to entry', but replaying cut scenes just sucks! Still I'm relatively confident we're in good hands, VLR had very little narration outside all the files anyways.
  5. I loved it. Really wish more vn's were like it. TBH I can overlook a lot of problems in KnS simply because I love the setting, artwork and soundtrack so much. I think on the whole its a better game than the first, even if it didn't have quite as big an emotional impact on me. It does feel like two games spliced into one, in both good and bad ways. I know a lot of these things are deliberate set-up for the third installment, it just grates my mind a bit. Not as bad as the end of the first at least.

  7. Bought it and finished it yesterday. As great a game as the first, although the 'where's the good end!?' impact of it is lessened the second time around. Sugina artwork is amazing, so is the ost. I hope it sells well, I think they have a 3rd in the works and I'd hate for it not to be translated. Don't think I'd ever be able to make it through something like this in Japanese, it was rough enough following a jp walkthrough to get the true end.

  10. There's a lot wrong with YU-NO, the 'epilogue' especially, yet despite its flaws I love it. Almost a VN/point+click hybrid.The ADMS (?) system was so far ahead of its time; it puts newer flowcharts (like VLR's) to shame once you've got enough of the crystals. Thanks for the heads up!
  11. Best thread. Literal tears in my eyes. Makes titles like Hypno-Training my Mother and Sister seem reasonable, perhaps even sensible... I'd love to know how profitable some of these more fringe titles are.
  12. Hanachirasu and Kikokugai (as mentioned above). They do swordfighting (Hanachirasu) and kung-fu (Kikokugai) in modern settings really well. Both shortish, action packed, quality nitro+ VN's. Use Tawn's patch to insert English into Kikokugai's newer version with the redone CG's. There's also the DVD release of Phantom of Inferno if you can track it down, although its censored and the translation is of questionable quality. If you don't mind older style VN's then then YU-NO and the C's Ware games like Eve:Burst error have a high action to slice-of-life-waffle ratio, though the older interfaces often have you wasting your time between the genuine bits of content. Either way I still love 'em.
  13. Yeah its odd, its only just released too so that rules out a whole bunch of compatibility problems. If your AV hasn't blocked anything, are you running it as admin? Somethings preventing the exe from opening which is odd given that you got it to install. Are you 100% sure its cracked (unless you bought it?).
  14. I'm a cynical, sceptical bastard at the best of times, but I think its ok to get excited about this! I think its happening. If it is, I can only assume Aksys are throwing money at Spike to get it green-lit, which is pretty much ground breaking. Especially encouraging for a non-ero, sci-fi, handheld VN. I pray I'm not wrong, I don't think I could handle the disappointment.
  15. I don't recognise those errors, although make sure you close utorrent before trying to install downloaded vn's. Otherwise files are locked as read only, which is a problem for some engines (mostly kirikiri though). If you think you've done this, don't worry - you don't need to redownload, just navigate to the save directory and mark it writable in properties. Do you know what engine this is? I think something is stopping .exe files from running. Did your Anti-Virus throw up any warnings on installation?
  16. Brilliant as Shinji Hosoe is, I would imagine the only thing needed to get him 'working on it' is an agreement to buy x tracks at y price. I really don't think he has much input regarding the playable content of the many games he composes for and I personally don't take his 'involvement' as an endorsement. I'm 99.9% sure they don't have permission for anything. Exogenisis is more promising, at least it appears much further into development and more confident to stand on its own feet, if only a fraction of the budget of a truly commercial VN. Honestly, the short tweet by Uchikoshi's expressing interest Exogenisis is more official 'endorsement' than anything I've see for Project Ace; and I'm assuming that interest is just based on a quick look at the kickstarter profile.
  17. I'm all for supporting oelvn's, especially in the vein of Uchikoshi's work. I hope they do well. However, this whole idea is batshit insane and pretty unprofessional to be honest. Most oelvn's are borderline unplayable, I reckon I could count on one hand the number to return a substantial profit. Seems like a bit of a publicity stunt, possibly an IP infringement and not the sort of behavior you'd expect from a serious vn dev. I mean good luck to them and all, I'd love to be proved wrong, yet I'm not gonna get my hopes up. I'd consider myself lucky if they release a quality game. To hold up hope of getting Zero Escape 3 funded as an incentive to buy a game, that realistically has a very slim chance of showing a profit, just seems kind of wrong to me. Beyond a sketchy promise to me. Do like the screenshot though!
  18. Ouch. Overall I'm optimistic about developments in the western commercial market, I think 2014 was a good year, but god this hurts. I'm old enough to know there's no point ranting just because my tastes aren't popular; I've pirated a lot of stuff in my time and have no problem with people getting off to whatever they choose as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. Still, to see very niche sexual-complex focused Nukige outselling the crap out of Cartagra shocks me. I dunno, maybe I'm the odd one?

  21. I/O, Chaos;Head, Remember 11, YU-NO maybe? I think these are all masterpieces in their own way, although they all have their flaws too. You seem to like the same sort of stuff I do, so I'd also say I really enjoyed fate/stay night and Kara no Shojo, although they honestly don't have anything to do with themes you mentioned. Amazing story though. If you can make it through the duller sections of Ever17 you likely enjoy all of these. Also maybe try Snatcher or Policenauts if you don't mind messing around with emulators a bit. Only YU-NO, Fate and KnS have sex scenes.
  22. It's a really interesting discussion. Successful VN's do seem be increasingly formulaic. However I wouldn't get too disheartened as they are gaining in popularity worldwide, increasingly inexpensive to produce and are clearly the best (likely only) way to tell certain types of story. I think it's hard to separate which stale conventions are due to Japanese culture from those that are inherent in the medium as we know it. Much harder still to know how we can advance the medium work for literary wonders yet unknown. If I had a clue I'd be writing that and not this! I do think we need to celebrate what the medium currently does well to make progress, as well as challenging the typical structure of a VN. Flow of dialog, emphasis on characterization, reader agency, etc; these are strengths of VN's in a mechanical sense. Looking back it's no wonder that VN's do paranoia, delusion, romance and, yes, filthy sex very successfully. Broad cookie-cutter settings wind me up as much as any VN reader (out with the school romances!) and the more innovation the better. Yet as long as we're still getting the odd, thoughtful, quality and profitable VN to keep the media alive, I hold hope that the genre busting masterpieces will come. It's slow sometimes, but I'm sure there are highly motivated geniuses among the more conventional developers out there.
  23. Really depends on the content and the medium. I personally prefer ADV style VN's with lots of meaningful choices and routes that complement each other, rather than separate isolated branches. I value complex stories and mystery over exquisite character design. But its no good taking that as advice if your strengths are in other areas. A VN can be anything from a digital book with sound and a few pictures, to highly technically complex systems. If I were writing a VN I'd be asking myself questions like; what parts of the work particularly suit a VN system, which system (or engine) matches my strengths best, will the narrative be dialog or narration driven etc. I'd fear shoehorning in unnecessary elements to qualify my work as a 'proper' VN and concentrate on doing something fairly modest, perfectly. Sorry if this sounds arrogant, nice artwork and good luck!
  24. Such a shame. One of the worst games to cut content from. There's important dialog in those scenes. Really hope this isn't cash grab on FrontWing's part. Was gonna back out of obligation, given I've already played it. Would hate to facilitate a butchered release of the sequels though...
  25. There's some really great VN OST's out there. Few of my faves already mentioned, especially Umineko & Rose Guns Days and Shinji Hosoe's stuff for 999/VLR (especially Quaternary Game). Takeshi Abo's work on the Infinity series and Chaos;Head is all over my favorite playlists, although I admire his consistency across whole osts rather than brilliance over 1 or 2 tracks. I love Kara no Shoujo - Investigation But my No1 VN composer has to be Ryu Umemoto. Desire, Yuno, Burst Error. All Masterpieces. A great mix of atmospheric and listenable pieces. All composed on tight budgets and now archaic hardware, yet IMHO they retain a timeless quality even now. R.I.P
