    I'm not sure if the world suddenly got super extreme or if I became the most boring person ever. Either way, it seems to me that everyone I talk to nowadays have picked a side in an ideological showdown. One side believes that there's a Jewish conspiracy to exterminate white men and establish some kind of Matrix-like society. The other one thinks that the slightest expression of opinion or even the private habits of other people is extremely offensive, an affront to democracy and that it's somehow controlled by a male conspiracy, a patriarchy, instead of a Jewish one.

    Am I misunderstanding something or is this really how things are nowadays? I don't actually meet people offline, mind you, so my experience is purely based on what I see online.

    There are a lot of angry and active people, and their voices are the loudest...I think? Some time ago I checked out MGTOW (Men go their own way). The idea is actually pretty meritful in theory, but in practice, their site attracts way too many angry men that it's just not a nice place to hang out.

    Head to places where such radical opinions aren't rewarded and I think you'll find that people are more chill and open-minded.

  2. I read through most of the first title and wasn't impressed. The pacing was nice, and moo-chan the main girl is likeable...but nothing really appealing in the first game. Relationships and characters  feel quite anime-like, in a bad way. Basically everyone staunchly say it gets better though, so I guess you can be sure it does.

    The CG's were nice, I appreciated them being of consistent quality with the sprites.

  3. I don't understand how they got sued for one HUNDRED million dollars. What makes him worth that much? I could see a 'take it down or we'll legally shut down your company", but this kind of compensation is ridiculous. Fucking legal system. I'm all for sites like gawker going away, but there's a million double standards.  It seems like he made a convincing case and played the legal system, and convinced the jury to legally vaporize the company off the face of the planet. /rant.

  4. Dude, if you know of some issues that led to the Aokana things happening, I think you should look into them. This is off of second hand information, but I don't approve of how you dealt with astro during translation project. Translators/people aren't just people you can 'manage' into doing what you want.

  5. When I browsed sites like http://yomou.syosetu.com/, I didn't see that much touhou fanfiction, and not even a single eroge fanfiction.

    Kinda makes sense...one of the more simple reasons to write fan-fiction is for pairings that didn't exist in anime. Another pattern is for open-ended character based series, like mariaXXX(?) or fruit basket. Eroge are mainly closed story for games that have a memorable characters, and already have pairings covered (if there are even any shippable pairings). Lastly eroges have pretty high amounts of text already.

  7. 1. The production value is miles short. Especially when it comes to graphical effects and OP, even doujin japanese games often have better OP's. I'm pretty sure this is a technical gap as well (there might be resources in japanese for OP making). If it were up to me, people would study how to make OP's in particular. Make them look less cheap.

    Generally for all-ages japanese doujins, the people playing those types of games very strongly graduate to stories which leave a lasting impression, while also having pretty enough (doesn't have to be amazing, just 'decent') art to be able to appreciate the characters visually from a moe perspective. (katawa shoujo falls into this category, actually :D)

    However, often it seems like the average OELVN writer doesn't have the nearly the skills to make a decent stab and utilize the premise/setting.

    Me too, I really appreciated the sentiment at the time I joined the site in early 2014. At the time, fuwa was the only welcoming place to talk about VN's. #tlwiki, vndb, and 4chan were out, for obvious reasons, while /visualnovels/ was mostly filled with funny images and posts from people finishing Grisia/MLA/Rewrite. Tay was pretty active back then too. Arr, Tay you're the man! I'm curious how fuwa will go in the year 2016: what new people will come, what the existing members will do. I have the inkling that people like you Zalor producing great content keeps drawing people back towards the community. Call me up anytime on VN community and piracy and we can go toe to toe.

     

  9. There's obviously a culture gap (real life), but I don't feel like I encounter it very much in most VN's.

    I feel like the typical VN and LN as 'medium genres' both have their own set of tropes/patterns you have to get used to, nether which bears that much resemblance to Japanese culture. What we're used to is this genre, not Japanese culture exactly. There are things which make reference to normal Japanese school/work life, but I don't and can't really identify them all because I'm not intimately familiar with those places. You do pick things up gradually though.

    Haven't played any VN's where I really noticed collectivism...but one, I might not know what to be looking for, and two, it hasn't really occurred to me to compare social interactions/relations presented in VN's to ones in the western world.

    I'm pretty individualistic. My idea of culture is...mostly centered around the values/culturally based interpersonal relations it leads to individuals holding, and how one might go about living the life they seek within and around that setting. Ofc, western cultures are probably a fair bit more conducive to this approach, which is a big example why I don't ness. like Japanese culture.

  10. It's a shame, but people going for the (apparent) easy money has always been true. What we might consider crappy, a good chunk of it actually appeals to people in some way (light adventure story with some porn!~), and the rest of it does its best to pretend so.

    Gotta find those dedicated creators who have either the vision/passion and/or the skill.

    I mean, think of it backwards. You're not going to find most of those people advertising on reddit, much less on kickstarter. Try Lemmasoft or other communities which produce games which are not VN's but with  high amounts of narrative (the English doujin game and vn market seems a lot smaller than the Japanese.)

    (I try to look and think about it as little as possible.)

  12. It pops up sparingly in some VN's, but never significant parts of a VN.

    A few passages from Muramasa. Including the 'noh play'. Dies Irae definitely features some, and Kajiri Kamui Kagura definitely contains a bunch.
    Kikan Bakumatsu has a bit (phrases, idioms).
    Subahibi has some, because it quotes shit.

    It's more like it shows up uncommonly in phrases/idioms or artistic exposition (that's why I want to learn the basics). I'd doubt anyone would write a VN in it because it'd be a pain in the ass for most Japanese people to read.
