    Awesome, I really appreciate it. In about a months time I'll have like 10-15 images for the partial release (total game has around 55, plus a few fun explanation cut-ins and credit screens).

    The camp images are like this. Only potential gotcha is that they are 8-bit, 256-color bitmaps.

    Anyways, if you are leaning a bit towards medium, then Kimi e okuru, sora no hana is great. I just finished it this week, and loved it. 

    The language used in it is not very difficult. It does get a little bit harder when they talk about ghosts, their origin and the way their powers work, but it's nothing major. 

    The routes aren't too long, and the game has just the right balance between humor and drama. Very good read overall, especially if you are looking for a charage / nakige that isn't too long. 

    Also the BGM is stellar.

    The game was released in 2012 (a year after madoka), but it was made on a really old engine. Personally I think the art's cute though.

    Sure awesome, I can put you up. Yeah, the game is pretty long, though shorter in line count compared to most visual novels because it's almost completely dialogue. It's about...15-20k lines in total? There's no irretractable commitment, so no need to worry.

    Thanks, you too. I really like your dedication to yuri :). There isn't really any here, but at least there are a ton of pairings to be had. Only, it's a bit hard fantasize about the characters because the story is pretty serious and down to earth.

    Mahou Shoujo's a freeware VN/SRPG hybrid with an exceptional focus on character detail and interactions. I stumbled upon this game while browsing on the Japanese VN-site Erogamescape and was completely struck by it. I don't think I've ever seen a serious plot story with much attention payed this to the characters. Things also become very serious and heart-wrenching in places.

    Chiyoko, the girl on the left, is technically the main character, but the spotlight is spread across more than 25 characters. Mahou Shoujo has a huge cast. There are about 15 major characters, and about a dozen or so more that stand out somewhat less.

    It's like Corpse Party in that you have a bunch of characters in a tense situation where story depends on what how they react and their personality, except this is on a different dimension. If you games which revolve around the characters reacting to things and deciding what to do, you'll like this.

    Mahou Shoujo's a very unknown game outside the Japanese free-game community, which is why I really want to spread word of it and give a chance for those would appreciate this uncommon type of story the chance to experience it.

    One day monsters appear in Kakyou City. The school Chiyoko and Haruka are in shakes like during an earthquake and the window panes shatter all at once. During the commotion, the two rush to the rooftop. What they see are bodies lying in the street and smoke in the distance.

    There, a strange talking cat approaches them and asks them to become 'warriors' in order to fight against these 'Biomonsters'. Panicked, Chiyoko is first to agree. She receives a round gemstone-looking transformation device along with a rather painful needle to the spine. Now a 'warrior', she is able to travel faster than the speed of sound and put up a fight against the monsters. But it is no cakewalk. The first battles are panicked and teeth-gritting. Even with Haruka joining her, they barely are able to fend off the first wave.
    The cat tells Chiyoko and Haruka they have to search for more students with the potential to become 'warriors' like them. Over the next few weeks they continue searching for members, however, Chiyoko's reputation as a dangerous person and her slight lack of common sense don't do them any favours, as she ends up frequently misunderstood. But besides that, not everyone isn't so willing to risk their life. Why should they be? This isn't the army. No-one is there to force them to join, or to maintain order.

    How does it feel like to be part of a group with other students risking your life to protect your city? What are you going to think of the other people there? You share a secret in common with these people, you're risking your life beside these people. But are you really all just going to become comrades?

    Some reach out and interact with others. Some reach out to their friends anew. Others sit back and watch anxiously, or perhaps in disapproval. Even while the threat of annihilation grows, their personal worries all remain in the air.

     
    The days ahead lay filled with turmoil, large and small.

    表れ is like a manifestation, a symptom in which a normally hidden property shows itself.

    「あっ、ほんとだ! なに、親しみの表れってやつ?」

    Ah, you're right! Would you call that, a sign of their closeness?

    Nowhere.

    Basically like a TL note without actually saying "TL note"

    If I could ask anything about the art, it's that you make the sprites match the emotions, and the sprite expressions strong enough. I imagine it could be hard with more complex art, but a VN that has epic art and suitable facial expressions is such an experience.

    I don't think Muramasa fits the bill. I guess if you like the internal struggle of Caim played out over something way more mature. But I think a lot of the people who like Eustia I think would be bored to tears playing Muramasa.

    I'm playing the game right now and only on the first route...but I'd like to expand on this VN.

    Hane has the plus side of having https://vndb.org/c31357 a wonderful sweet character who's voiced by the same voice actor as Eustia. Since the author's Shumon you the game's going to be gentle with character friendship and relationships carefully described. Otherwise it's a game with a very deep (alternate?) Christian setting. What singlehandedly makes it similar to Eustia is that it has quite a nice atmosphere and it's a very different world that can draw you in.

    I tried the suggested OCR tool for VNR and never got it to work.  Tyrosyn suggested using the Microsoft IME tool or some such (I think).

    Here's my format. For words where an English word is more helpful, I add the English meaning at the front. For colors and things that are hard to imagine, I sometimes add pictures. I also have a few, but not very many kanji definitions, which are based off of goo's kanji entries. I only use those when I want to explicitly see the meanings of the kanji, usually words alone will do.

    I get my definitions from http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/ . Sometimes I supplement with goo's thesaurus differentiation and examples. When the result's not in goo, by searching google + 意味, you'll get a http://www.weblio.jp/  , or a yahoo or goo Q&A page.

    I feel like maybe 1/4 of my deck is of wierd/random stuff I almost never see. Not sure what I think about that. Probably no need to go overboard with rare words to start.

  13. I'd reckon there's a kanji deck with related words attached to it, I sorta doubt there's one with input though, even though that's possible.

    You can do it the vanilla way and add words to anki as you go, ones which that have a kanji you want to be able to produce, or a on-yomi reading you want to learn. I ran into the same annoyance as you, after one or two hundred words added in that fashion the kanji input problem comes up a lot less often.

    I was personally fine with just sternly telling people off (without going as far as to attack them ofc), and people not taking it personally and learning. But I guess this works as long as you can be broad-minded enough. The person's in fact new each time.

  15. I don't think people buy amateur books. If I lived in a village of a few hundred people with you, then I might buy a novel from you perhaps enjoy it. But nowadays there's the internet. There's plenty of original stories out for free... Heck even TL'd light novels if you consider the gray area. You'd need something that would make people want to read your stuff especially, like an existing novel which people find interesting enough. Even then, there's the challenge of you finding your market, without boiling yourself down to the lowest denominator.

    I do think it's great that you're writing (I want to write stories too), but I think you'll find that selling books is very difficult, just like getting published.

  16. Objective? No. Reasonable, and traceable back towards what standards they are judging the game by? Sure. If you want something that's more grounded, look at what they say, not the score they produce at the end.

    When you give a review in/outside of a fandom you probably don't have the forsight to anticipate the rating other parties would give. You're job isn't to do that. A good review imo alludes to what standards and measure you are measuring, and a non-biased (balanced, to be more precise) reviewer is open to other standards.

    The reason why reviews are useful is that many people use a piece of the same measuring-stick. I might react differently to Euphoria then Decay's review on it, but when I read his review I can be like "huh, indeed this was a good part", or "no, I don't think that really matters", or "no, I don't think that's even the case." It gives you hints for were you could judge them. It's a expression of interpretation/opinion/assessment  that allows the reader to compare their standards for goodness and preference.  "Euphoria was GREAT/SHIT" is fun, but it's not useful.

    Yeah, to contrast that in even G-Senjou, Grisia was a game that used to dominate the /visaulnovels/ frontpage until the subreddit organized up. Perhaps the large potential for in-group jokes and quotes from the VN helped contribute to its community presence. G-senjou's just like the game everyone plays once and that's it.

    I think there's a part of human psychology that see's something and says "Oh, I know what to do! Let's do that!"

    Not sure what to do, play familiar game.
    It's a familiar comforting task, there's little reason (in one's mind) not to, and occasionally you get some real satisfaction/excitement/endorphins.

    I think it's also important not to stress over getting to EVERYTHING. Just because something sounds interesting doesn't mean you should be flipping your mind out because you haven't gotten to it. Anime, and especially games take a long time. More selection should be a good thing, not a burden you impose on yourself.
