  1. Sorry about the "true" in the title. My intention wasn't to put down other shows. I wanted to emphasise what I consider 'Harem'. How to say... Love Hina was mentioned and this is a good example for the structure of a harem show, I don't like. Already from the start, the main guy was interested in only and no matter what the other girls would do in the show, the viewer knew the outcome right from the start, that the main guy will end up with . This I experienced with many shows. I care more for the option of possibilities. True that Haganai only has two real love rivals, but that is okay. At least there is no focus on just one girl and every outcome is possible. If the conclusion is left open (like in School Rumble) I am fine with it, then honestly no satisfying conclusion for every 'route' would be imaginable there. I started watching Seitokai no Ichizon and I like it so far. Though here the roles are kind of reversed, as the main guy is in love with the girls, not the other way round. Not sure why you assumed it would be too dull for me. The main guy also made a great comment that fits here: He wants a harem ending with the girls in the club for the reason: Because it makes everyone happy. It is something like this that I feel about such stories. I am a great fan of japanese idols. There is the saying 'daredemo daisuki', a person who in most cases loves every member of a group or follows several idols groups equally, without deciding on a favourite. It is similar to what I look for in harem anime. It is one reason as well that I prefer the general arc of visual novels over later character routes. I have no interest in girl's of the week. There should be a focus on a certain cast and that's it. A harem is fine with it. It is not Legend of Galactic Heroes. I hated the main guy in School Days, so pass Shuffle I tried once but it was too, I don't know, 'moe' maybe? Too sweet and cute and nice and all. Sorry.
  2. I am confused why there is no general anime recommendation thread here. So I am sorry beforehand for starting a new topic. I just discovered the anime Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata. THIS I call a Harem Anime to my liking! Why? Because in contrast to ones like Love Hina there is no main girl AND it isn't already clear with whom the main guy character will end with. I hate that! Even better. Here the ending gives no conclusion just that every girl is kind o in love with him. So far the only comparable animes in that regard were Haganai and School Rumble. What is your take on those kind of harem stories? At least in my perception harem with a fated love story and unrequitted love by side characters are more common. Can you recommend any other similar animes? I only care for slice of life. And it shouldn't have overboarding ecchi scenes.
  3. Hm, I download it as well. Graphic looks fine to me, it has no adult content and free. Good enough to try it out. I am curious what type of story they will tell.
  4. I honestly watch a lot of Live Action. Not on purpose though, as many stories I prefer are based on mangas or anime, which is understandable as there are great plots found there. I believe they are neither inferior nor superior to anime. It just depends on your prejudices You just can't expect Hollywood values from japan/asian TV or cinema. And granted, many shows seem to be out for a quick buck. And most important: It is a genre on its own and should be regarded as such. humour - anime humour is hard to do. Although old school american shows like Parker Lewis or Malcolm in the middle showed, that it is possible (not the faces of course). Still you can make a show funny if you want to. You just need a different take on it and not just copy the animated source. acting - as most sources are popular to youths, the production firms try to popularize its shows with current idols, who in most cases perform in a movie for the first time. But this will garner attention and curious movie goers. I honestly hardly recognize bad acting as I don't speak the language and can therefore not hear any wooden pronounciation and such. Subtiltes also distract from looking at facial expressions closely. Shows I love are the taiwanes version of Hana Yori Dango, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, the korean movie Old Boy or dramas like Ouran High School Host Club and Mei-chan no Shitsuji. Just to name a few. The Sailor Moon Live Action for example, although lacking in budget and acting, surpasses it's anime and mange predecessors in plot and characterization in length. Kamen Rider and such are not my cup of tea, as the bore me with their extended henshin scenes. And if you want an original Live Action: Try out Majisuka Gakuen 1+2. Highly recommended!
  5. Looks pretty interesting. I'll keep an eye on it. I like gothic, since I read mangas by Kaori Yuki.
  6. Never thought I would agree with you, but yes. I hate to decide in most cases The problem I have with specific girls routes is that in general the other characters don't get a solution and are put completely in the background or don't appear at all. I would rather appreciate if the story focuses on the chosen girl but won't neglect the rest. It's why I tend to like long common routes as well, as every girl gets their place to shine. Choices are great, if they don't get you an immediatley bad end. I loved Phantom of Inferno's way of choices: Each lead to a totally different ending without forgetting the context of the main plot line.
  7. After starting "If my heart had wings" I realized, that some routes are only playable when finishing other routes before. So my question: What is the reason behind it from the developers view point? Why not make every route free from the beginning? And something on topic: In general are you playing every route in the game or are you satisfied with your favourite heroines?
  8. Believe me, I would have mentioned it. But I don't know Inami Interesting. There is something like reasonable violence
  9. Sena is a tsundere? And Eri was likeable but also violent, as far as I remember.
  10. I get the impression that most tsunderes are associated with violence. Is that a righteous assumption?
  11. Hmm, I try a "Back to topic" I haven't played that many VN, but so far I liked most of the tsundere characters, if they are not that annoyingly energetic and are clearly shown with their sweet side. Tohsaka Rin is a good example for this (only read the Fate Route so far). But in general there is always a sweeter girl in the mix so I hardly decide for a tsundere Yandere is totally out of the question. Meand I hate all of them!
  12. I get it that it is confusing for non-familiar readers seeing honorifics when playing a VN for the first time. Still prefer it though as you get it pretty fast. I already find german to english translations confusing as they tend to translate it without the german distance when speaking to an foreign person. Same with all east-asian languages, not just japanese. The honorifics or senpais, Onii-san,... are an important part of their communication and indicate the closeness of a relationship. They can't be just exchanged with a simple "you" or the given name. Just my opinion though . Glad, that VN and Other media are subbed, so by listening you can easily get the spelling.
  13. First thing: I am German, so I had to learn English in school. It is still far from perfect but I can listen, read and speak it without much problems which I am proud of. I like watching TV-Shows with English Audio (have issues with hard accents though, esp. Britain ones) or with English subtitles. I even go so far as prefering the english version despite the fact, that Germany has great synchronisation. But after watching so much Asian Movies and such I grew fond of the different pronounciation which just fitted some mimic and gestic more than a dubbed voice could. Learning in school wasn't a problem for me as I developed an private interest in the English language at the time. I often translated lyrics from my favourite bands, with the help of a dictionary and started my first adventures in watching subtitled movies and animes, which had no german counterpart. This was a big positive for my acquiring of skils. It helped also that in school the focus was on hearing - comprehension as the whole class had to speak english the whole time. This became apparent while learning Latin later on. It is a dead language and you only studied it by reading a latin text and tryed to translate it with all of its grammatical hurdles. Here I really failed to grasp anything, neither vocabulary nor grammatic as I couldn't build a feeling for the language. Different with English: I never bothered much with the grammatic either but through listening I got a feel for sentence building. I speak and write now without contemplating what grammatic Would be the right choice and so on. This is important for me: being able to talk and think fluent in a foreign language, without taking too much care. And I hope you agree that someone can still understand my uttering despite the mistakes in it. What I find bad in learning asian languages: They always demand, that you also learn the written alphabet and be able to read it. This is counterproductive in my opinion. I once started learning korean, later japanese but discontinued my studies as I just wanted to speak/understand it. Later I wouldn't have minded to begin reading. But the speaking ability comes first for me and should be the basic. You never expect from a baby, that it will start writing when speaking its first words.
  14. Maybe you should make a poll to see how much padding is disliked or not. I for myself enjoy long common routes as well as long running animes, IF the plot is not totally forgotten. If the characters are interesting I love to see more of their daily routine and habits. But that's also because I rather focus on the emotions of the characters and have a problem with too fast advancing plots. How to explain? I want to dwell a bit in achieved accomplishments before going on.
  15. Don't know if it fits here, but I try it anyway Want to order some games over on mangagamer for download. I chose Kara no Shoujo and both ef-titles. Can you recommend them? They seem decent in art and plot. Does anyone know the games Loren The Amazon Princess and Jisei? Although no VN in the regular sense, they look interesting.
  16. Depends on the genre for me: A High School Romance / Harem can have a lot of "filler" if it is at least funny or interesting and if the overarching development of the plot isn't totally forgotten. But if the focus is on storytelling I agree with your opinion. In general a long VN is better than a short one for me.
  17. The more dark structure and the killing part is to my liking, honestly. Maybe I try it when I happen to find the game somewhere for a reasonable price. Your points sound interesting enough. Will see about Muv-Luv then. Have to play it anyway before starting Alternative. But nice Data-reference. I keep my hopes low
  18. Hehe, too late. Copy-Pasted your text, re-edit it and publish it now under your name in a newly opened "Love School Days"-Thread! Just kidding I get your point and it really sounds much more interesting in game play valuation. Too bad I will never play the game as I just heard too many ba critics about it. What I dislike about specific route formats (like Grisaia) is the fact that you will only get the complete (background-)story when playing all the routes. But they will never emerge together as a whole, as every route is considered self-dependant. Meh...
  19. Whoa, refering to women as tools and kick aside romanticism - I feel outcast For the sake of discussion we should name secondary traits, as I have the feeling, we talk about different definitions. For example a reliable tsundere like Tohsaka Rin is far different from clowny Matsushima Michiru.
  20. In that regard how to you decide your choices? Are you trying to get in character and choose the most suitable one, or do you choose on your own personal preferences?
  21. Same with me. In writing I am much more active and lively than I could ever be in an actual conversation. I have a friend, with whom I can write for hours, but when we sometimes met, we are only able to hold a discussion for half an hour, at most. Damn social skills...
  22. An intelligent Kuudere. I don't like to talk much myself and prefer my solitude more than often. Like Yumiko from Grisaia or Saber. Maybe a dandere. Can't really distinguish them. Tsundere are also interesting as conversations with them are mostly teasing the other (in a friendly way) and seldom lovey-dovey. I hate that in relationships. Therefore NO deredere.
  23. I like to add a non-functioning Auto-Read-Mode. I like to enjoy my VN as a low-animated movie. So if I have to click every time I can't enjoy it.
  24. But if you think of the fact, that stories take place mostly in school settings AND in Japan, I am also of the opinion it should be a little more romantic, instead of: You are gorgeous. Let's go to bed.
