  1. Rewrite has a series of segments called 'Mappie' that involve you scrolling around on a small area of the screen to select objects of interest on a map of the surrounding area, this is part of the game which contains both story objectives and hidden extra fun stuff although there is no gameplay beyond searching for the hidden popups and clicking on them to see story scenes. The fandisc Harvest Festa does have a segment called Rewrite Quest which is probably what you saw being referenced (dungeons and floor bosses).
  2. So, i finally finished Rewrite. Common 8.5/10, Kotarou is an epic troll although the comedy gets irritating after a while. It wfelt like Muv-Luv Extra at some points but on the whole was a good, solid common route, built characterisation and whatever pretty well. Kotori 8.5/10, a good introduction route, good plot and Kotori is kawaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. Ending possibly objectionable to some but i found it ok. Chihaya 7.5/10, decent shonen stuff but nothing really stood out though. On the other hand, Shizuru 9/10, dat ending and the song. Lucia 7/10, starts off very well but a pity i didn't like the ending. Akane 8.5/10, once again possibly objectionable ending but i liked it. Moon 9/10, excellent job of building up to the finale and full of awesomeness. Terra 9.9/10, very well written, epic finale to sum everything up. However, the ending might be very disliked by some. Oppai 10/10, BEST FINAL ENDING EVER On the whole i can say it was quite different from what i was expecting, it's a departure from Key's nakige in that it focuses on storytelling rather than trying to make you cry. Nevertheless i liked it very much, and i would rate it as slightly better than LB as the separate character routes have better writing on the whole. Also, in many places i could see very clearly how others would possibly dislike it, overall i would say enjoying this is very dependent on being able to appreciate the flaws in the story, the very shonen-y action parts and especially the endings. Finishing this has bumped up Cross Channel on my to-play list, i'm now much more interested in Tanaka Romeo's writing. Also,
  3. Total Eclipse is a spinoff of the Alternative story but nowhere near as good. Symphonic Rain is also one of my favourite VNs, but i dont think all adaptations are bad - i saw Steins;Gate and thought it was not bad, and from ratings i see people also thnk Clannad anime is good. I also wonder how a Katawa Shoujo anime would go (0% chance of this happening), although it would probably have to be a h-anime since some routes fall apart if you remove the h-scenes. Bonus entertainment points since 4chan is sure to throw a massive fit.
  4. The Muv-Luv trilogy would be one heck of an awesome anime series imo (although i wouldn't get my hopes too high because Total Eclipse was crappy). Pretty linear storyline lends itself very well to adaptation, and the Muv-Luv Extra side routes can probably be ignored anyway. Symphonic Rain also definitely deserves one, although it will probably never happen due to lack of publicity It might be a bit difficult to deal with the rhythm game portion though.
  5. I guess i'm a bad boy then :lol:/> because there's no way i'm dropping Rewrite halfway, not after seeing Kotori ending. The irony of this though is that i dropped Katahane for Rewrite without even thinking. Btw is it just me or do you guys also get random long lags? Sometimes i'm happily reading then the game freezes up for a minute and continues on after that like nothing happened. I didn't open a thread in support forum because i think its too minor to warrant one, the game runs fine in all other respects.
  6. Yeah i know i need to play Clannad, but the main thing putting me off is length. I went into last year's year-end exam period with Little Busters! halfway through and it didn't do wonders for my grades. I have it queued up for midyear holidays. Btw how's the translation quality, part of the reason i've been putting it off is that i heard some parts are very unpolished and i was thinking maybe i should camp for doki to fully finish it. Then again people also said Steins;Gate was unfinished but i played through it and found no problems, in fact i have it as my 2nd highest rated right now. Still no news on Rewrite CG library? Or is it another MLA style VN with no library and i have to go look through everything and screenshot it.
  7. I have only played Little Busters!, Planetarian and Kotori route of Rewrite so far so i can't really offer much comparison. What i can say from my experience is that Rewrite's common route is basically a Muv-Luv extra with its ridiculousness and i did think of dropping it a few times, although i probably would have stuck around because Kotori is soooooooo cuuuuuuuuuuute, I wanted to hug my screen so many times. LB common route is full of jokes but it's at a very manageable level, there is a proper spacing of silly and serious so it doesn't become irritating whereas Rewrite is just joke after joke after joke until it gets old. Can't compare endings because i'm still pretty far from Rewrite's end. BTW LB:EX isn't fully translated yet (i'm not sure if there even is a partial patch) so try it only if you feel confident in your japanese. Planetarian might be a good start since its a short VN (about 3-4 hours?) and its basically the Key nakige formula rolled into a small bite-sized package. You could give it a try and see if you like their style.
  8. I would recommend Kotori first, her route seems set up to be kind of an introduction, and others have also said the same. I haven't played other routes yet though so i can't say for sure. But then again i guess all orders work anyway since the real destination is moon/terra. Anyway as far as Rewrite is concerned i must say i dislike the common route. Too much random comedy, too much silliness. It's like Muv-Luv all over again except Kotarou is also doing some trolling of his own rather than being a passive idiot. I only stuck with it because i have faith Key will deliver epic at the end, it would not be a stretch to say that i would likely have dropped it if this was my first Key VN. As far as the characters go i guess i'm ok with them so far except for chihaya. This is just me but i can never associate the name 'chihaya' with 'clumsy tsundere airhead'. Kotori and Shizuru are dangerous for heart health though, with that level of cuteness.
  9. So... As per the topic, Rewrite Discussion! I've played up to the middle of Kotori's route, and it's looking ok so far. I wouldn't call it great, but then Key isn't exactly known for making supremely awesome character routes so i can forgive anything if Moon and Terra are as good as promised. Meanwhile i'm actually quite disappointed with the common route, while i know to expect slice-of-life comedy this does go a bit over the top sometimes with the back-to-back comedy scenes and slapstick everywhere. Kotarou is an awesome protagonist with his epic trolling right off the bat though unlike say Riki who's actually kind of pathetic and just sits around at first. My intended route order from what i've seen is Kotori->Chihaya->Shizuru->Lucia->Akane. Also, does anyone know how to access Rewrite's CG library? I spent like half an hour derping around trying to find it to no avail in order to get the title screen as my desktop minus the menu bar. In the end i had to settle for taking a quick screenshot at game start just before the buttons pop up, but it would still be nice to know.
  10. I find that what really makes me like a song is not the song itself, but rather the feelings and memories associated with the song. For example, even the grandest of orchestral concertos have nothing on Innocence (from Katawa Shoujo) because of the epic scenes it evokes. At this point in time i look at my iPod and realise pretty much half my whole library of songs on it come from VNs because of this. Its hard to pick favourites but here are the ones i really like: *WARNING* Some of the videos, even if they are but picture backgrounds, may contain major plot spoilers - you may just want to listen to the audio and not look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Y6DNQdlxNo, Katawa Shoujo KS is full of beautiful songs. Nothing like chilling in the school library with the KS soundtrack playing. Songs of Distant Earth, Muv-Luv Unlimited I didn't really like the 'Muv-Luv' song (Alternative's ending) so this is basically the 'Muv-Luv series theme song' to me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ywI2bSscl8, Symphonic Rain A very aptly named song, and an extremely beautiful way to end off one of my favourite visual novels. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLLrDE69UW4, Symphonic Rain It's a beautiful song, even though it's associated ending is likely to cause you to destroy something out of rage and grief. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIleIBSm_zc, Tsukihime Poor song, doesn't even have a proper name. Despite its simplicity, it's really beautiful the way its used in-game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHIJz0Op6sc, Ever17 I'm one of those who prefer the newer version over the original. Saya no Uta Beautiful song to end a... not-sure-if-beautiful game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EmhlYh-bLU, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6S4HvWRrsQU, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly5NiKQqJvc, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prOdAOZ6jWA, Little Busters! LB! has one of the nicest collection of ending songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Nbj4UUzoas, Narcissu Side 2nd A song that perfectly captures the sadness and despair of the whole VN. Unmei no Farfalla, Steins;Gate A really epic ending song. This is quite possibly my 2nd favourite song ever, i always have this urge to sing along, especially at the chorus. At the end of it all though i think you will have to play a VN to the finish to fully appreciate its music. It just isn't the same, listening to a song and just hearing the song, and listening to a song while recalling all the feelings. This is why i love VNs.
  11. From what i have played, all these fit the bill to some extent: Lise, Symphonic Rain Nishinozo Mio, Little Busters! Aoi Isuzu, Hoshizora no Memoria In a slightly related matter as well, i loved Katawa Shoujo too, and Hanako was my favourite.
  12. As far as visual novels are concerned, Symphonic Rain seems to be somewhat underrated in terms of popularity. It rarely gets recommended despite being top-tier utsuge (in my opinion, but then the votes on egs and vndb are also in agreement). Heck, it isn't even on fuwanovel. In terms of other games, the X series by Egosoft is my favourite sandbox game, ive probably sunk over a thousand hours into it already. Paradox Interactive's grand strategy games (Crusader Kings, Europa Universalis, Victoria, Hearts of Iron) is also quite obscure but is addictive once you get the hang of it.
  13. EX is not a patch, it's a full re-release of the game entirely separate from the original. Details can be found here: http://tlwiki.org/index.php?title=Little_Busters! http://doki.co/visual-novels/little-busters/ http://vntls.tindabox.net/project/little-busters From what i can tell there is no way to get translated EX/ME content, since they have not released any EX route patches (Sasami is supposedly fully translated though) and the uploaded EX/ME patches simply force a skip of all untranslated scenes (i.e. everything extra in EX/ME). This naturally causes bugs and whatever so at this point in time you're better off just playing the original version. If you want to wait for EX/ME release, i's probably going to be at least half a year from now at current pace so i suggest you play the normal game anyway (I just finished LB last month). Also from what i have seen the new routes all require you to finish the Refrain final route anyway and the rest of the extra content that matters is all character route epilogues that you can just fire up a save to see.
  14. In between exams and Symphonic Rain i haven't had any time to come on the forums, and i finally pop back in after finishing Symphonic Rain. It's awesome, and i would definitely recommend it to everyone although unfortunately its not on the Fuwanovel site. I'm deciding what to play next, and what catches my eye are Sharin no Kuni, Katahane and Sekien no Inganock.
  15. Hello and welcome! Your vnengine looks good, especially as i just upgraded to a HTC phone recently. I have nothing to anti-recommend since everything i've finished so far is decent at least. My least favourite of all is Mirai no Kimi to, Subete no Uta ni (not that it's bad but it's just meh whatever) but i don't think non-vocaloid fans would play it anyway. As far as horror VNs are concerned, Saya no Uta and Tsukihime are probably the most famous. If you have a DS (well actually if you have a decent computer you can emulate DS perfectly well with the desmume emulator), 999: 9 hours 9 persons 9 doors is a puzzle game VN with horror elements too. I just threw out the horror ones i have played, not sure about your played-list.
  16. No offence, but from your vndb profile almost everything else you rated was a 10 anyway. I actually would say Chinami is my 2nd favourite character in this VN. She pulls off the comic relief character role very well, i didn't find her annoying at all, i actually liked her popping up for the lulz. Her theme song is sooo unforgettable. To both (and anyone else who has finished this): I can't help but wonder how anyone can play through Aoi's route without wanting to punch You. I apologise to fans of this if i seem like a hater but i just feel full of sadness and disappointment when i think of this. I really want to like it because its one of the few (or perhaps the only) VNs where i seriously don't dislike any of the cast at all but every time i look at it the things i remember are the flaws in the story.
  17. I have just started on Symphonic Rain. Not sure what to expect since i have seen both very good and very bad opinions of it. The rhythm game section takes some getting used to as well due to somewhat awkward (for me at least) key placements. From what i've seen so far the graphics seem quite subpar for a 2004 VN, and i'm hoping the story will make up for it. On a side note i thought i'd point out that this VN is not hosted on Fuwanovel, although it's not very famous it does seem to be quite well received from the vndb ratings i see so you guys might want to put this up.
  18. Singapore time is GMT+8 so it should be within 2 hours of Australia time (which part of Australia time are you guys referring to btw, as i recall it ranges from GMT +8 to +10), so that time won't be a problem for me although i probably won't be up for this within the next few weeks due to year end exams. It's a nice idea though and could be very fun.
  19. I personally remain neutral to romance. My opinion on this is similar that on h-scenes, if it makes sense to be included then it should be included, if it does not have a place then it should not be forced. It will always be present to some extent, because it is necessary to tie characters together and develop attachment with relationships, and among the strongest of those relationships would be romance. And in some cases the story just wouldn't ever be the same without romantic relationships, for example none of Katawa Shoujo past the common route would happen if Hisao didn't date one of the girls. On the flip side though i occasionally get the feel romance is somewhat of a forced thing like h-scenes sometimes are, if you look at modern works its practically obligatory to have some sort of pairing involving the protagonist. Romanceless VNs are few and far between, looking at my list Narcissu 1/2 and Planetarian are the only romanceless ones i've gone through (and all are short VNs). The ending up with someone else might be a bit weird, although it will probably force more gender balance in the main cast i think the downside is that we get superficial relationships because the focus is on the protagonist and i doubt writers will really go out of their way to write a side love story. Once again i think the simple rule of inclusion applies, if a relationship is not too plausible then it shouldn't be forced. Also it will cause rage among the 'she is my waifu' types because they cannot self-insert as a side character. And finally i wonder what you were thinking when you suggested Rin x Kyousuke.
  20. I didn't play 1 (no xbox, only watched anime), played 2 and it was one of my favourite psp strategy rpgs. 3 is on my to-play list but delayed since forever thanks to VNs. I liked the game concept for being innovative and combining strategy, rpg, and shooter, but i disliked how only a few overpowered characters are all you need to win the game. You would expect given the wide cast each has their own niche, but unfortunately no, i find it sad that with such a diverse cast at the end i only ever used about 10 characters properly. You might think that you need a wide range of roles, but sadly once again a few OP characters are all you need. Also i dislike how the only way to get a good ranking for a mission is to blitzkrieg everything while ignoring defensive positioning and how all interception fire except for V2 is an exploitable joke. It was entertaining because it kept me thinking and towards the end the more difficult missions got really interesting, but could have been better i guess.
  21. Well i just finished this and it is awesome. Refrain is one of the most epic things i have seen. I probably won't watch the anime though, i personally think there's no point since most vn animes are basically rehashes of the original story and i rarely watch animes anyway. Now to find a big enough box to contain all these feels ._.
  22. I prefer Hanako's route, because it's the classic case of similar life story, and it also did inspire me to become more outgoing and actually try to make friends irl. Also it gets my vote for most emotional scene i've seen so far. After that the other 4 are on par with each other as each has their own good points and i refuse to pick favourites from them. Also i'm not sure if it's just me but it seems Shizune's route tends to get the least amount of love everywhere i go. Sure, it has the least drama, but its precisely because of that i like it - it's the only route where there's no life-or-death or whatever moments, a route where Hisao's primary concern is living his daily life. On a somewhat more relevant note to the current discussion, Rin's route really is quite difficult to fully appreciate. I found myself going back to re-read many parts just to get a better grasp of everything.
  23. If you ask me, Common route: 9.5/10 Asuho: 8.5/10 Aoi: 4/10 Komomo: 8.5/10 Chinami: 5.5/10 Kosame: 8/10 True: FUCK THE TRUE END THIS MADE ME RAGE HARDER THAN MUV-LUV ALTERNATIVE CHAPTER 7 Mare not rated because it's just lolicon fanservice. Yes, i loved the common route, it's one of the best and most enjoyable common routes i've seen. But the endings are... disappointing. Very much so. <incoming MASSIVE spoiler alert> I would say Hoshizora no Memoria gets my vote for most disappointing vn and most wasted potential. The starting was very well done, and even through the character routes the way the theme of 'starry sky' was woven into the story was well done. But the endings themselves failed to impress on the whole, and the debacle with the true end just killed it for me. Great story concept, excellent characters, nice graphics, good soundtrack, all brought down by failed execution. So, in conclusion, my favourite route: The common route. P.S. If anybody who hasn't played this yet reads this, i would like to say that i actually still recommend people to play it, despite all i have said. There is definitely potential there and it has an average of 8 or so on vndb and 85 on egs (ok no idea why vote disparity but whatever) suggesting a significant number of people found it enjoyable at least. I would not call it a must-play but if you have time give it a try, maybe you will be able to appreciate what i can't.
  24. I actually agree Tsukihime is better than Fate/Stay Night. I rated both equally on vndb but that's because F/SN has the benefit of much better artwork, character voices (with the RNpatch), better soundtrack, and those epic Tiger Dojos. If they improved Ciel-sensei's lessons to the same level and updated everything else (and also the fabled Yumizuka Satsuki route) i would have no qualms saying Tsukihime is better than F/SN. It's one of those YMMV things though, F/SN is to Tsukihime as Final Fantasy is to Shin Megami Tensei - on one hand you have a more idealistic high fantasy setting with fighting for justice and whatnot, on the other you have grimdark fantasy where everything is a mess and there's no real good/evil. Also Shiki is definitely a much better protagonist than Shirou. Don't let the art discourage you, despite this being my 2nd vn (F/SN was my first) the dated art style didn't bother me, the story carries everything so well. I would say definitely a must-play.
  25. Actually i disagree about Shirou being sexist, he only ever uses this argument in Fate route. In other routes he has no problems whatsoever with women fighting, and the topic isn't brought up. My personal thoughts on this are that Shirou is merely grasping at straws, trying to rationalise why Saber shouldn't fight, because seeing That's why Tohsaka is saying that, because it's really what he's trying to do, just Shirou showing concern in his own blockheaded way. Also i disagree about Fate/Stay Night being a fantasy for men or having control over women, you could cut everything sexual/romantic/whatever out and it would still stand as a worthy storyline. I do tend to take a very 'detached' opinion in general though, because i never self-insert as the protagonist and i just consider myself a 3rd party observer coming along for the ride. I suppose sexism is everywhere to a certain extent anyway, just look at how few famous otome games there are. The whole top rating page of vndb has 0 female protagonists, unless you count the F/SN prologue. That could be chalked up to the playerbase being predominantly male though. But as far as portraying any gender in an insulting way, no i don't think i have really seen that. In cheapskate sex-oriented eroge its probably rampant, but in any good story any form of racism/sexism/whateverism would ruin it.
