  1. You can use Proton on non-Steam games. The easiest method is just to add it as a non-Steam game to your library (Library -> ADD A GAME -> Add a Non-Steam Game...). After adding the game, right-click it in your library and select "Properties...". In the properties windows, in the General tab, click the "Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool" option at the bottom. Select the most recent Proton option. Close the properties window and run your game as you would with any other Steam game. Running Proton without Steam is a bit more of a hassle, so I don't recommend it unless you really want to avoid Steam.
  2. PlayOnLinux is pretty much dead at this point. If you want a PlayOnLinux alternative then Lutris is probably the way to go. You can use vanilla Wine for most intents and purposes, but if Wine's giving you a hard time then Valve's Proton works incredibly well. Welcome back to Linux!
  3. Just chiming in to say I'm really looking forward to this as well. I'm currently doing some hacking of the game to waifu2x the entire game and port the engine to HTML5 (my JS reimplementation of the Buriko VM can almost boot the game now). If I could slap some English text on top of it, it'd make me really happy.
