Your thread asks what are people's thoughts on companies buying fan translations, and those are my thoughts, not really sure if you wanted something else? The first paragraph of your reply is just corroborating what I said: people just want free stuff.

Regarding donating to fan groups: sure anyone can do what they want with their money, but it's pretty shady to ask for money for something that's technically illegal to begin with.

In the end all you're paying for is the fan groups' work, nothing goes towards the creator of the product, and that's what I have some problem with on an ethical level.

Fan translations, as the name implies, shouldn't be about earning money.

Regarding fangroups not being upfront, I'm not really sure what you mean. There might be a case where they're unable to disclose information due to NDA agreements, for example.

If you're donating to a fan group, ultimately the responsibility falls on you.

Well you didn't just give your thoughts you questioned mine so I responded.

As far as to the motivation to donating obviously I'm not purchasing the game. I'm donating to help the group function and pay the bills. Like I said earlier if it's a game I'm interested I buy it if not I don't bother playing it.

I don't have a problem with Mangagamer and Sekai releasing games in English either. It's great not only for the translation quality but the game is often much cheaper here then it is to purchase and ship. The problem I have is the fact people who sell their work make use of paypal donations and the help of the fansubbing community but don't give back what they take.

Just be upfront about it. If people still want to donate their time and/or money they will but what they don't appreciate is being lied to and for bullshit reasons to be made up for why the project has been stalled like they found a girlfriend in RL (inseem). QC problems (Kohaku Translations). I mean I don't even know how long Doki been sitting on the Little Busters work. Years?

This won't "kill" fan translations so long as Japan keeps releasing games exclusively in Japanese, that's just a fact. Even anime still has fansub groups despite being much more widely available nowadays.

You have to understand most fan translators translate a game because they like it and want to share it with other people. If a company comes along that has the proper channels to make that game legally available in the Western market, there's very little reason not to accept such an offer.

Complaints are usually from people that have only pirated games before and is salty about having to pay money now.

Of course there are valid criticisms to be made in the actual localization processes for each game, namely the fact a lot of erotic content is being left behind in favor of all ages releases, but the concept of a company buying a fan translation isn't really destroying the world as we know it.

Also fan groups asking for donations is 10 times shadier than ChuSinGura's Kickstarter project.

I'm not sure I understand the point you are making. Managamer releases get cracked on a regular basis as do steam releases.

If someone doesn't want to pay for something the option is there whether it's fansubbed or not. With the global marketplace it's not hard to get games shipped here used or new. Whether it be Jlist or even amazon which has started carrying the titles.

And I don't really have a problem with donating to translation groups whether it be anime or otherwise as long as it's original work. I'd never donate to HorribleSubs. I'd rather buy a sub to crunchyroll and hope some of that money reaches the creators.

But there are anime that doesn't get licensed by Crunchy or Hulu or whomever (though the list is getting smaller and smaller every year) I've donated to groups who did the original translation work (usually 5 dollars) and would do so again.

What I have a problem with these VN groups is they are never upfront and honest about their intentions which is fine I guess if you want to go off as a 1man translation team but I kind of think if you are asking for donations like Kohaku Translations did and asking for help inregards to editing, hacking or whatever you should at least be upfront that the plan is to ultimately sell the work.

  3. For me it's yes on both counts.

I try to donate my limited resources to groups who need it. If I known they were going to be paid for their work I wouldn't have donated.

It's the same rule I apply to open source though are built-in protection against such a thing happening. I understand this has always happened with VN's but it's sort of becoming an epidemic. I understand there are groups who wish to be paid for their work but there needs to be more transparency when they are asking for the resources of the community whether that be hackers, translators, or donations.

I've been burned three times in the last year I've made donations. No more. I pay enough for Mangagamer and Sekai games I don't need to be donating to them prior to purchasing the game.

Anti-cheat in a single player eroge? Oh Japan, let people enjoy the dang game whichever way they want.

Really is that what caused it to break? LOL.

I did use cheat engine to max the characters and dice but didn't edit the days or story in any way. So didn't think that could be the cause.

Long time not posting here, so I think since I'd played it blindly, I think I'll try to offer some trick to new player here from my understanding. Also that's some interesting cheat preventing bug (I'd never use cheat engine like SpoilerAL in any gameplay VN honestly), and to @Arunaru I think @cantspeakjapanese was cheating, because his stat was too high for the time when Subaru joined the party. Oh, I'd actually almost finished it by skipping a lot, although I'm about to replay it though.

Some tips or gameplay explanation from me, and with some comment from me:

    1. Libido mean dice recovery. 10 libido mean 1 dice, and since the game (or maybe @Arunaru slip some hint) state maximum recovery was 8 dice, it means that you should only collect 80 libidos only. Oh for raising libido, you could cure woman kainin (Looks like Alicesoft use the reason that beautiful kainin was from present to allow us to cure them) using our trusty method from nukige, or I should called it sex. Oh, for play eroge option it had some CG from Alice Soft games (Those CG that I recognize was from Sengoku Rance. The CG were when Rance had sex with Sill at hot spring, Magic masturbate in front of Rance, and Rance had 4-some with Mouri sisters).
    2. To @wyldstrykr, about gaining SP, you must deploy your ninja at night. Oh, you need to do enemy search first to find the enemy. From there, you deploy Haruka to fighting the enemy, and each time you defeat the enemy, your SP Limit will increase. And I think you also need to do some Dragon Synergy (Sexing your heroine, duh) to prepare against boss and don't forget to train your ninja to increase HP (or Barrier in-game term) to prepare fighting the boss. You will did Dragon Synergy anyway to recover your SP, because Attack command only useful at the early game, and I mean only for finishing enemy with 1 HP left, because it only deal i damage and the hit was quite low.
    3. Speaking about hit, I think if our reflex was bigger than the enemy, the enemy will miss more and our attack will easily connect. Also true for reverse, although don't count too much on it though.
    4. Kainin what I would call monster of the week, because every Kainin appear, our ninja will appear like Sailor Moon and will make 'In the name of the Moon' speech after attacking kainin, while the kainin was harassing some people (Although some people kind of deserve it, some of them was too extreme, and some of kainin using quite incomprehensible logic). Oh, some kainin was quite hard, and if you lose, your fighting Blade will be punished by kainin. The 'hardcore pro-wrestling' I mentioned before was come from there. The sex was quite extreme to said it lightly.
    5. Each character could only mastered 3 skills, and you only need max 80 SP to master all of it (If you want to mastered 4th skill, it need 999 SP, and with anti cheat measure, let's just said it's impossible). Choose wisely, although I'm VERY VERY VERY (996 times) VERY suggested the skill that allowed us to avoid enemy in castle, because every time you face the enemy in castle, you will take some damage to SP and Barrier, and if 1 of those reach 0, you will be get out from the castle. Just teach the skill to 1 of Blade (Either Haruka or Narika is fine, although I would suggest that you teach the skill for the heroine you'll not going into her route).
    6. About the Dragon Synergy, you need some luck to certain extend regarding dice, although in case you fail, you could try again on next days, with reduced number from the dice roll. If you feel it was RNG, feel free to reload the game.
    7. Oh for the heroines 20 SP skill, Subaru was damaged enemy about 50% current HP (Useful for high def enemy), Narika was increase next attack damage by 2, and Haruka was paralyze enemy (Useful if we want to safely damaged the enemy).

I think that's all the tips I could give for, and good luck playing this game, although compared to any Alice Soft games, it was quite easy imo. The end boss could be hard though, although Subare 3rd skill helped a lot.

Are you saying this is where the anti-cheat mechanism kicked in? It actually was quite easy to edit the amount of skills. All I did was edit the internal tracking number that kept track of how many skills were trained (upto three) and then setting it to zero after three skills then rinse and repeating until they were all done.

    Could you elaborate?

It's not that I've been on the lookout for them, but this is the first I hear of any such thing.

Game crashes for some at startup and I've had over 4 IG crashes. Right now I can't progress at all because I am unable to use Subaru (shows not registered) and can't deploy her (single grunt mission).

Just shows the two main characters and cant deploy crossing them out. I think it's because I choose the love +1 options before her character had registered. Dunno.

    4. Dr. Solar ability to travel through time

    5. Dr Solar ability to create and destroy planets

  8. I try to avoid shows with unlikeable male protagonists but I got suckered into watching "Nagi no Asukar". Dear god is Hikari Sakishima unlikable. Goes around ranting and raving like a madman without trying to understand anything but for some reason everyone seems to like the guy.

Even the way his handle PLI is pretty awful. Some chick waits for him five years and he doesn't even consider her feelings. Douche.

  9. The new episodes of Strike The Blood, Tokyo Ravens, and Golden Time is epic!

    Anyone following those animes?

Following Strike The Blood  and Witch Craft Works. I've loved Strike the Blood uptil this point and Witch Craft Works has been meh but enough to keep my interest.

I definitely plan to get at Golden time at some point. I was originally turned off by it's synopsis (not a fan of love polygons) but I've heard enough praise to give the series a go.

  10. Yea. The Op for Tokyo Ravens... Watched til ep 4 thn got bored... But cuza the op imma give it another chance.

I had the same experience with BTOOM!. I found the series somewhat boring but the theme song kept drawing me in.

On the opposite side, I challenge anyone to watch the Anime series Macademi Wasshoi opening through the first five episodes. The series itself tolerable but man ass along with the most annoying theme song ever created turned me right off the show.
