I've allways been into literature, film, video games, pretty much any medium for story telling. VNs are just another one of these for me and my interest in any of them can wane for a while and suddenly return with a vengeance or vice versa.
Maybe I'm easily influenced, but when I stumble across a work that is exemplary for why I grew to like that medium to begin with, it reignites a passion of sorts and I'll start to crack down on the respective backlog I have for that medium. 
For example, most recently that would have been return of the obra dinn for video games, while movies are currently on the backburner, except for maybe a marvel movie here or there.
Otaku related material may often come with inferior story telling and I can understand growing out of them. It still allows for a different kind of experience than other media and sometimes that's exactly what you want/need.

I just finished Made in Abyss and I seriously need something happy to watch because that was a ride, but it was an amazing one and I enjoyed every minute of it! Gorgeous art and animation, and I loved the characters - definitely in my top 10

Regarding Gurren Lagann, I am a tear jerker for happy endings. Well...
The manga has not the most perfect story in the universe, but it is damn worth a read, at least once.

Gurren Lagann is very good. I don't like the ending that much, but I could hardly think of something not too cheesy.

Also, Elfen Lied's manga is quite beautiful indeed. The anime did great on the soundtracks, but it covered almost nothing of it.

When the shit would really hit the fan, it ended.

All I've been playing for almost two weeks is Umineko (Questions arc). I honestly didn't expect to get hooked like this but it's amazing

So I started reading Umineko yesterday and I'm only up to the part where everyone has arrived on the island, but I'm already enamoured with it. There's just something I really like about it but I'm not even sure what. I'm pretty sure I'm only going to be even more into it the further I get into the story

Although I'm only halfway through chapter 2, I can tell you that it keeps on getting better and better.

Well, somehow the dialogues and characters feels more real and genuine than most crap that gets released.

Yeah, a good protagonist should be a super manly badass who doesn't give a fuck about anything. And he should curse, smoke, drink beer and after drinking the beer, throw the bottle at some bitch's head. 

It happens to me, too. I usually try to read only one VN at a time. But sometimes I get distracted by other games that are not VNs. This usually happens when I read VNs that don't appeal to me that much. Then I might have longer breaks (perhaps up to 2 weeks). But in the end I still continue and finish them. I am pretty proud that I finished every VN that I started so far (with one exception but that was because it was in Japanese and I wanted to get better at that language before continuing it).
I know that if I started a new exciting VN while reading a pretty boring one then I would probably drop it altogether so I avoid that at all costs.

Yeah due to real life and motivation loss, I don't always finish one. Eventually I come back to it, if it keeps my interest. I haven't dropped any yet, because Im sure I'll regret it. At least I'm almost done with reading EF. I had to start it over, since I am reading different ones. Also my genre preference changes. I sometimes want a Nakige or another genre. It depends what genre I'm in the mood for.

There's a lot of hardcore sexual content (like this) in the VN. You need to make sure you can handle it first before you go into this (you said you disliked rape, so I'm assuming you dislike more extreme sexual content in general)
It's worth it to bear through those in my opinion. The twisted story line is pretty unique among TL-ed VNs (I don't think there's another EN one like it as of now); it's deep and interesting (kinda like the twist on the true route although not the ending itself) and thought-provoking (at least for me for Nemu and Kanae's routes).
If you can handle those sexual stuff (note: some of it do play a part in the plot and the development of it in some routes) and a plot which is darker and more twisted than most stories you will read, then you should definitely read this VN  

This happened to me two times. The first one was with FSN, where I only managed to read a fraction of the Fate route before I dropped it. Then one year later, I reread it, skipping what I've already read and managed to finish it for once.
The next one was Eien no Aselia, which I dropped after getting a silly game over, only for me to try it again later and finish it.
Then there are VNs I dropped without me reattempting to read so far. Most of them were either nukige or VNs I couldn't enjoy, regardless of how many time I invested into them (Daibanchou, G senjou and Kamidori). The only exception so far is Rose Guns Days, due to its episodic nature (I only read the first season so far) and me having to prioritize other things in RL.
