Kei kun reacted to Clephas in I have lost faith in VN
So you thought VNs would change your life? You thought it would teach you something? Well, it is possible... but I can tell you straight up that VNs didn't start having effects on my mental processes and psychology until I started playing them untranslated. In the end, I concluded that, other than the loss of my more prudish self, it was actually thinking constantly in the language for hours on end for years at a time which had an effect on me. Even then, it mostly manifested in a distaste for rude behavior and being less likely to start cussing if I was thinking in the language.
The lessons 'taught' in most VNs are the same taught in all sorts of other stories across the world... did you really think it was going to be different just because the medium was different? A story is a story, a metaphor is a metaphor, and in the end, the lessons you learn are entirely up to you.

Kei kun reacted to adamstan in Good Romance VNs?
And (if my memory is correct) with very nice animated opening, rarely found even in newer titles.
Also +1 on KoiChoco and KonoSora. Clannad, while not being strictly romance VN, has many romance elements, and is simply very good VN.
As for Hatsukoi - yeah, protag's behaviour in Ruuna's and especially Yukino's route was really frustrating at times, but I still enjoyed that VN (rated it 8). That frustration was part of the story for me - as the MC was frustrated too. And while from reader's position it's easy to shout at him "You idiot! You should..." - I know that when faced with similar situation IRL I wouldn't do any better. If everybody always acted reasonably, life would be much easier, but we all know that this isn't the case.
BTW - if one strongly dislikes "hopeless" protagonists, then some routes of ToHeart2 may be annoying for them too.

Try with Hatsukoi. (Actually i'm reading it and was pretty good).

Kei kun reacted to adamstan in I have a question for the people here living with their girlfriend/wife
I've never had a GF, so what could I know... (maybe that's why I'm reading VNs )
Nevertheless - I think almost everybody would agree, that communication is essential for good relationship. Also, sneaking/hiding won't work forever. So you two should definitely talk it over. You don't want to spend all your time pretending - that's exhausting.

Kei kun reacted to Nosebleed in Dracu-Riot! Completion Project
Dracu-Riot! Completion Project
Project Info:
As i said in a previous post, if the Dracu-Riot scripts were released, I will translate Miu's route, and that's exactly what I'm announcing in this thread.
But I'm not alone in this crusade, I've partnered with the wonderful people at The Oxford Comma is Superior Subs so we can deliver the best possible final product and lay the Dracu-Riot memes to rest. We also got several people from the Fuwanovel community to help speed up things even more.
How is the project going to go down, you ask. Well you can read this post if you want detailed info, but the tl;dr version is that we are aiming to release multiple patches.
The first patch aims to translate the remainder of Miu's route as well as any remaining untranslated content (images, menus, etc.) with complete editing to polish the current patch.
We are going to try and release this in about 2 months, if everything goes according to plan.
The second patch is meant to be more heavily translation checked as that's when Fiddle has enough free time to go over the whole game.
There is no ETA for this second patch.
This doesn't mean the first patch will be terrible, we will of course strive for a good product, but we would still like to inform you of our schedule. If we waited for Fiddle to be completely free, it would take much more time to release Miu's route, and so we've decided to do it this way.
I hope you look forward to future updates.
FAQ:
Why not just make a Miu partial patch, why do you want to go over the whole game?
There are actually 3 main reasons for this:
The first and biggest one is that Insem's patch only works with the physical version of Dracu-Riot! which is very hard to get in the West and we want to make a new patch that works on both the physical and digital versions of the game, this way people can purchase the digital version and patch it, thus supporting Yuzusoft. The second one is that we want to americanize the writing style as well as make sure everything is edited properly, because Insem didn't have time to finish the whole thing. The last one is translation checking. Although we don't doubt Insem's abilities, we really want to try and make sure the translation is accurate. We also want to include translation notes in the game. Only 2 months? That seems way too fast.
2 months is indeed fast, if we were translating the entire game, but we're actually only translating about 4,000 lines and we're splitting those lines between two main translators, this will hopefully make that 2 month deadline possible.
Please do note we will not jeopardize translation quality for the sake of reaching the deadline. If we can not make it in time, we will delay the release until we're satisfied with the end result.
Will the translation have memes?
Yes, but only the dankest ones.
Why aren't The Oxford Comma people making the announcement here?
So I can get those sweet, sweet internet points.
I want to help!
Contact @Fiddle and beat him in a pipe bag showdown (plaid skirt is mandatory).

Kei kun reacted to Nosebleed in Forum Rules
Forum Rules
While Fuwanovel is all for discussion and having fun, we still wish to have a regulated atmosphere that's not harmful to our users, these rules are meant to keep said atmosphere on stable levels. Please read each point carefully.
Fuwanovel's number 1 rule is Respect and Civility.
Don't personally insult anybody. Don't be a troll or promote misconduct. Don't bait or harass any user or staff member. We take these offenses very seriously and we hope our users respect this rule above all else.
General Forum Guidelines
These guidelines are meant to be followed when posting on our forums.
Don't embed explicit hentai images or videos on posts/threads, use Spoiler tags/URL form instead and tag it as NSFW. Don't advocate for any real-life crime. This is taken very seriously and will likely result in a permanent ban. Don't post any real life pornography of any kind. Don't provide or request illegal sources for copyrighted material, use legal sources instead. Don't spam the Recent Topics box. Don't post content you know might offensive to someone or a group of people. Don't post staff PMs in public, if you have any issue with how the staff carried something out, talk it out in private with a moderator instead. Don't bring personal issues in public, if you and other user(s) don't get along, please don't bring your strife to the forum. Don't promote or link to fan translations that either cost money or require you to make money for the patch creator to get. This includes things like patreon-only patch releases and using ad-infested link shorteners for downloads. Global Moderators and Board Moderators are responsible for carrying out the rules and it is up to them to interpret them and carry out an appropriate punishment for each situation.
Lolicon/Shotacon Policy
Pedophilia is an extremely complicated and sensitive real-life issue, and presents a significant challenge to visual novel communities who want to promote thoughtful discussion but are faced with strict laws on one hand and deplorable internet rhetoric/insensitivity on the other. Many of you are aware of how far back and how divisive this issue has been. To protect the site from legal action and to resolve this issue once and for all, we have chosen to amend the site rules as follows. We're trying to strike a delicate balance here -- acknowledging this is part of the VN medium, and sensitive discussions of these topics are important.
The new policy: Fuwanovel is not the place to discuss the nuances of pedophilia – in real life or in entertainment. Because they are a part of the traditional VN heritage of Japanese games, we acknowledge that mature, focused discussions of “loli” characters and routes within a visual novel are valid, and we will allow them within the Visual Novel discussion boards, but beyond those confines, Fuwanovel is just not the place for this topic. We have also clarified our rules for posted or linked images of "lolis" on the boards, which can be read below:
Brass Tacks:
If you want to discuss a “loli” character or route in a visual novel, you can do so in the VN boards with the caveat that crude, inflammatory, provocative or aggressive posts will be grounds for a topic’s deletion, without warning Outside the realm of Visual Novels, Fuwanovel is simply not the place to discuss this complicated issue, and we ask you to avoid casual references to-, or discussions about-, pedophilia and the sexuality/sensuality of underage people or characters. This includes avoiding discussion or mention of porn- or sex-simulation games featuring underage or underage-appearing characters to the forums. Rules for images, avatars, and signatures: Do not post sexual pictures of underage characters. If an image is focused on, accentuates, or exaggerates a character's nipples, vulva, or penis or positions them sensually (body position, wet panties, nearly naked, etc.), you should not post it and it will be taken down. No erotic form Toddlercon is not allowed. Post will be taken down and you will either get warning or ban. Attitudes of the staff vary significantly on this issue, but this policy is presented – purposefully – without moral commentary. This is a tricky issue which presents real risks for the stability of the site, and ensuring the community’s longevity simply has to come first.
Thread rules These rules are meant to keep threads as clean and free of trouble as possible.
Please try to keep responses on-topic and meaningful. Don't derail threads. Don't spam threads. Don't double post repeatedly. Don't post for the sake of posting. Don't necrobump threads without the intent of continuing the discussion. Don't post seizure inducing GIFs without a spoiler and a warning labeling it as such. Any posts that are seen to fit in these categories or seen to be harmful to the thread risk being moved or deleted, or at worse getting the entire thread locked.
Additionally some boards have their own specific rules, please see related topics inside each one of Fuwanovel's boards (they are usually pinned at the top).
Blog Rules
Blogs are meant to be personal and we try to respect everyone's rights to write about the things they like, however if a blog post is seen to break any content rules, staff holds the right to delete the entry as they see fit.
Signature and Avatar Guidelines
No explicit nudity (genitalia and female nipples are in this category) No avatars or signatures featuring sexualized loli/shota characters No pornography (this includes implied sexual acts and bodily fluids) No gore (disembowelment, dismemberment, torture, etc.) No offensive content (profanity, hate speech, offensive symbolism, etc.) No seizure inducing GIFs (or GIFs that make people's eyes bleed in general) No signatures exceeding 400 Kbs in filesize Reporting Content
Whenever you come across content on the forums which breaks one of these rules, please report it using the report button underneath said post and explain why it's breaking the rules.
Any member, no matter how new, has the right to report posts.
You will not be punished for reporting any post, even if your report is deemed unjustified*
*While reporting a post is fine, spamming reports in order to troll/abuse the report system is not and can lead to you to getting a warning.
In case of doubt:
If you have any doubts about how to proceed in any situation or if said situation is not listed here, please contact one of the online Global Moderators via Personal Message with your inquiry. Global Moderators have a blue usercolor at the bottom of the forum for easier identification.
In case none of them are online during that time, the list of Global Moderators as well as the rest of the Fuwanovel Staff can be found here so you can message one of them.
Rule Enforcement
We trust Fuwanovel users to keep their composure when the situation calls for it. In any case of a serious infraction a Global Moderator is responsible for carrying out an appropriate punishment that can handle the situation effectively for both sides.
Smaller punishments like revoking the ability to post content for a period of time can be given out if the situation calls for it (namely for spamming and trolling), without granting a warning point if a Global Moderator sees fit to do so.
Warning Points are only given out to reoccurring or serious offenders that do not heed either rules or previous warnings. A Global Moderator is in charge of deciding whether or not a user deserves a warning point.
Global Moderators are free to give harsher punishments like suspensions if they clearly notice the violation is severe or has ill intent behind it.
There is a 3 Warning Point cap and when a user receives a 3rd warning point, they acknowledge they are putting their account in jeopardy and risk being banned permanently.
Do not evade bans, if you create a second account to evade your ban, you risk getting it lengthened.
If you feel you were not justly banned, you can PM a Global Moderator with your reasoning and that Global Moderator will bring it up for discussion with the rest of the staff to see if it is valid or not.
In case a warning point was given out and a ban is proven to be unjustified, your warning point will automatically be revoked.
In case your ability to post content was revoked and it is proven to be unjustified, it will be rectified.
Username Changes
To prevent user-confusion, the ability to change your username at whim has been removed from the user control panel. To change your username, please PM one of the global mods with your desired new user display name and your reason for making the change. Username changes require a strong reason and motivation to be changed, and will otherwise be denied to prevent confusion on the forums.
User Title Changes
User titles (the titles you see below your avatar) can be changed at any time by making a contribution to the community. Here are a few examples of ways to help out. When you've completed your good deed, please report to a Global Moderator, who can make the change for you.
Assisting in coding projects and/or working on the front site; Helping with forums projects; Writing a walkthrough for a game; Writing an article for the Visual Novel Aer blog; Posting 500+ posts on the forums (posts in the "Coliseum of Chatter" do not add to this count); Or something else you can think of! Note: Users with 500+ posts have, in simply posting so regularly, helped to build the site. Thank you for your contributions! We hope you'll keep it up. These users can change their user title at any time from the user CP.
Definitions
These definitions serve as guidelines to define certain types of content. In case of doubt on whether or not something fits within one of these categories, a Global Moderator can make the judgement call.
Spam
Content without any purpose, coherency or relevance whatsoever.
Singular spam posts are deleted without warning. If a user makes many spam posts in one thread or singular spam posts across many threads, then they are subject to a punishment.
Threads or blog posts made for self-promotion (such as links to off-site personal blogs) should be limited to one (either a blog post or a thread) per product being promoted, because such promotion is more easily perceived as spam.
Derailing
Going completely off topic in a thread, this can result in the thread being locked or moved to a more appropriate section depending on whether or not it's salvageable.
Harassment & Abuse
This involves aggressive pressure or intimidation and can based off of things like racism, sexism, xenophobia, homophobia, etc.
This will never be tolerated anywhere on the forum, even in private messages, and severe punishment will be applied to any cases of it.
Posting for the sake of posting
Posting several times in a thread without trying to move the discussion forward and only to increase post count and/or to troll/spam.
Necrobumping threads without the intent of moving the discussion forward also falls into this category.
NSFW
Content that is too sexually explicit or excessively violent that could offend certain age groups.
For something to be sexually explicit it must show either genitals, female nipples or sexual acts.
Trolling
Starting arguments or upsetting users by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages with the intent of provoking users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.
Insults
An insult is a derogatory remark that labels an individual or group of users. Name-calling is not productive and typically derails the topic by turning the discussion to the credibility of the user(s). It never convinces the other party and often provokes a similar reaction from other posters. The resulting commotion is ineffective for the offender, offensive for the target, distracting for spectators and tiring for the staff.

agree
i'm also reading ChronoClock and finished 2 routes , for me ChronoClock is good one but HaperMaher is better .
my ChronoClock rating is 7 , Hapyermaher is 9 but as i said i finish only 2 route if i finish all route my Chronoclock rating should be changed.
about my HapyMaher Heroine rating
Yayoi remind me for someone (it's personal experiance so don't need any reason lol) so i choose her at the top of my list , but it's hard to decide others because iike them all in difference ways
if the question is changed from rating to "Who you want to match with Touru ?" my clearly answer is Saki .

Kei kun reacted to ChaosRaven in Hapymaher Discussion Thread (Mangagamer Licensed)
Finished Hapymaher and it was a bit of a so-so experience. Not exactly unexpected though, considering Chrono Clock had its fair share of problems too.
But the first half of Hapymaher was actually pretty good. The dream world scenes had a sense of mystery and danger, while the real world scenes were more light and slice of life oriented. The iteration between both worlds was decently paced and kept things interesting without neglecting the lighter moe parts. And the heroines were not only very likable, but also contributing to the plot, with Maia being the highlight as the mischievous loli-villain of the dream world. Until that point the VN was scratching on an 8 rating in my book. Unfortunately, the second half couldn't keep up wih that quality.
The VN teases Alice in Wonderland in the first half, and just when you're about to tumble down the rabbit hole and experience a world of wonder and mysteries... you get stuck in the entrance and can't move forth or back anymore. This was just about the time when the endless dream starts with the party, christmas and gender-change events. Instead of giving you an interesting sub-plot in a fascinating meta world, the VN just throws the whole plot overboard and tortures you with slice-of-life and bogus events of almost unparalleled boredom. I had to heavily abuse the skip button to make it through that mess with a healthy mind. And the routes weren't much better. Yayoi's didn't fit at all to her personality, Maia's did barely exist and Alice had so many personality changes in her route that I hardly knew who she was at the end. Saki's was probably the 'less worst' since it at least followed the main plot around Maia, but the revelations were still very minor. And the so called true-route was just the continuation of Alice's apruptly ending half-route. Still enough to ridicule all other routes, including the actual main plot around Maia and let you end up with a girl you hardly know or care about. So yeah, the plot was certainly not developing the way I wanted.
The VN has still some rather good points. The heroines are all very likable, especially Yayoi, Maia and Alice. Saki was the only one that didn't really click with me. She was a bit of a bitch and I didn't like her voice that much. In contrast to her Maia was just fantastic. Hapymaher was good when she was on the screen and unfortunately she didn't have much screen time in the second half. Her seiyuu also did a marvelous job in making her mischievous, dramatic and mysterious. And Yayoi was just gorgeous.
The art is certainly one of the strongest points of the VN - it's certainly one of the most pretty VN's I know. The music is also pretty decent, offering good tracks for both slice of life and dramatic scenes, even if the tracks get a bit repetitive after a while.
Heroine rating: Yayoi = Maia > Alice > Keiko >> Saki
Overall rating: 7/10 (The plot certainly wouldn't justify that rating, but it gets lots of bonus points for art, music and heroines)
Some personal observations:
I played Hapymaher at the same time like Fatal Twelve and it gave me some comparison material why HapyMaher's plot failed and the one of Fatal Twelve succeeded. Fatal Twelve has about 15 character sprites, 60 event CG's and lots of background locations just for the plot and it's a medium length VN. HapyMaher has just about 10 character sprites, and despite its 75 event CG's only 20 - 30 are relevant to the plot - the rest are H-scenes. There's also a severe lack of background locations with almost the whole dream world consisting of 'plantified' real world locations. Add to that a long length VN and it's getting clear why it's difficult to make a good story out of that. Although the H-scenes in Hapymaher are certainly gorgeous, they sacrificed too much for it.

Kei kun reacted to Clephas in This toxic attitude regarding translations needs to end.
Addressing the topic author...
... translation purity is a load of shit. Good translators of any stripe basically argue over how far they go toward Americanization or retention of Japanese concepts.
Honestly, speaking as a translator myself, I can say that there is no such thing as a perfect translation or localization. However, that is no excuse for poor work. Not everything is possible to translate. It is a miracle that games like Tokyo Babel and Dies Irae are readable and still relatively enjoyable in English, considering how much of a pain the butt it must have been for the translator to deal with the emotional aspects of his work (for one thing, Dies Irae's preexisting fanbase is full of jaded a-holes like me, so he was going to get bashed regardless of what he did). I will state this outright: Japanese translation is a pain in the ass as well as an oxymoron. Japanese doesn't translate, it just gets interpreted into another language with concepts that approximate the meaning while completely missing nuance and subtlety.
Machine translation is annoying because it doesn't even meet the baseline of a Japanese translation... interpretation of the original material into comprehensible English that doesn't go off into the wilds and ignore all context (this is the baseline of an acceptable but not necessarily good translation/localization). First, I've yet to encounter a machine translator that consistently produces English sentences that makes sense. Second, I've yet to encounter a machine translator that succeeded in figuring out the correct kanji conjugations to produce words it needs to translate to another language (thus resulting in some seriously weird outputs). Furigana parsers just barely manage to pass muster, and even there you have to disregard the suggestions about anywhere from 30%-60% of of the time (meaning a high level of Japanese and English knowledge is necessary, in any case), based on the favored kanji of the writer and the parser's ability to handle unusual kanji choices (all parsers have their quirks).

Kei kun reacted to Dreamysyu in This toxic attitude regarding translations needs to end.
I'd love to write to write a longer post, but it's already too late here, so I'll try to keep things short.
Are we talking about fan translations here? Because, yeah, if some VN has literally zero chance to be translated officially, I would be fine even with a relatively bad fan translation, as long as it keeps things readable, as long as there's still something worrh reading in what we have in the end. In the other cases I mostly disagree. To add to what Lesiak said, I believe that if you start to lower the standards, then at some point you'll simply come to the point where even completely ureadable garbage produced by Google translate becomes acceptable, as it is currently in the LN fan translations. Which brings me back to this point:
I'd personally love it if LN readers we're at least a bit more critical about what they read. 9 out of 10 LN translations are completely unreadable, and most others become unreadable at some point.
Plus this:

Kei kun reacted to bakauchuujin in This toxic attitude regarding translations needs to end.
My guess would be that it is mainly because VNs are more niche and as such have a higher concentration of hardcore otaku than anime, manga and light novels. That being said I do think that there are translations that really deserve ridicule whether it is MTL or something like Libra, but I do feel like some people might be overly critical towards decent translations wanting every translation to be amazing and done by someone who has both perfect fluency in japanese and english as well as the writing capabilities of professional writers.

Kei kun reacted to Happiness+ in This toxic attitude regarding translations needs to end.
Context: a guy I met on Fuwa’s discord was told to end the TL for “his own good” and the translation team did not like him for his one too many jokes. After talking about it with the guy, I realized something. In the anime, manga, Japanese video game worlds, there’s nobody arguing over the purity of a translation, even weirder this doesn’t happen in the Light Novel world either. Light Novels are 100% text, but when translations come, nobody gets into arguments about whose translation is better or whatever. It’s the weirdest thing. Why in the VN community do have such a purity spiral for translation? None of the other mediums of Japanese entertainment have this issue even though they all need to be translated. Even when there’s an official release of a VN, all the fan translaters loose their damn minds. Like... why?
I doubt our brothers from the land of the rising sun have such fervor when they translate EVNs.
I think this snobby attitude over translation needs to stop because we’re not going to ever make a “perfect” translation because translation itself is a art not a science.
Personally, look I thought about this before: I am going to bite the bullet and say:
I rather read a bad translation than to never get a translation at all.
With a bad translation, people can see how it’s bad and someone could make it better.
I understand that people really care about doing their best, but there’s so many kamiges out there that will remain untranslated.
The VN fandom is growing, but we’re nowhere near anime levels of mainstream thought, and I think this stupid purity spiral regarding visual novel translations is one of the main reasons why.

Kei kun reacted to Clephas in Hapymaher Discussion Thread (Mangagamer Licensed)
Maia route is, strictly speaking, a bad/sad ending. This is self-evident, though, even just based on the prologue.
Alice's route is generally best left to last, but I don't have a recommendation of which of the other heroines to do first. Personally, I tend to go after Keiko first, because I like her personality (that and she is surprisingly sexy), followed by Yayoi and Saki (one or the other, based on my mood).
Hapymaher is the type of game you just sit back and experience, not the type you plow through at speed. Its style is probably unsatisfying for moe-only specialists, though. The atmosphere is a bit too depressing, too often for people of that type.
Of course, on follow-up playthroughs, I generally found the Christmas arc to be something of a headache (once you've experienced it once, it loses what little appeal it has). I mostly play this game for the feels and the music, though I also love Maia (a given for anyone who likes this game in general). Her sadistic giggles and mocking speech patterns are a fond memory for me, even five years later.

This is a list of VNs that go above and beyond, where everything just comes together in an ideal fashion to create a superb VN. I'm listing those I've played, regardless of my personal tastes. Unlike the non-Ero list and some of my other lists, I won't be taking input for this from anyone who has played less than a hundred non-nukige VNs (make sure your vndb is updated, if you want to add to the list, lol). I know that sounds arrogant, but there really isn't any way a newcomer can judge on this issue. Not all of these VNs have aged well, and there is no such thing as a VN without issues, so I know for a fact that some people will disagree with me.

Summary:
Lucid dreams.
Dreams where you know that you're dreaming.
After an accident in his youth, Tooru Naitou began to have nothing but lucid dreams. Always being aware of when he's dreaming meant that his mind could no longer rest when he was asleep. Only when he collapsed from utter exhaustion does he finally get a reprieve.
Lucky for him, he has a childhood friend, Saki, who insists on calling him 'Nii-san' that tries to do what she can to support him. In his science club, his senpai Yayoi is endlessly amused by his awkward way of living. And he has an underclassman, Keiko, who likes to sing in front of the station and likes to call him weird for his less than normal attitude towards life.
Tonight, Tooru dreams again. But this dream is different from those that came before.
