adamstan got a reaction from the tales of Sora in Kazoku Keikaku (Family Project) re-edit project (Ikura GDL engine script extraction and editing)
    Hi.
After reading Kazoku Keikaku I was taken aback by poor editing of the later part of the game. Thinking about re-editing it into something more readable, I tried to extract the scripts from the game. Unfortunately I ran into the wall pretty quickly.
The only tool that was able to do anything was ArcTools. It recognizes ISF files, has even built-in template for Family Project. Unfortunately it was only able to decompile dialogue lines, omitting everything else (narration, character names over spoken lines etc etc). It produced a bunch of files with content like this:
    :: word wrap line after, characters=50 :: - <7B79, 0006> "......"= - <8296, 0006> "Ai ya~"= - <8458, 0006> "..."= - <8948, 0006> "Hey, are you alive?"= - <89B2, 0006> "...mmm..."= - <8DA7, 0006> "Hey, what's wrong?"= - <8E89, 0006> "Are you okay? Can you get home by yourself?"= - <8F23, 0006> "..."= - <902D, 0006> "Ah..."= - <9109, 0006> "... Wo ... xiang yao ... yi bei ... shui."= - <923D, 0006> "Ai ya..."= - <92EF, 0006> "Hey."= - <94A9, 0006> "What happened?"= - <9A31, 0006> "Damn it."= - <9BC4, 0006> "But now isn't the time to be saying this."= Completely unusable.
"AE VN Tools" is able only to extract files from main archive, but they stay in encoded form - its script module isn't working, so it cannot decompile scripts.
On the AE page, I stumbled upon a pack of python scripts that are supposed to decompile and compile ISF scripts, and also convert them into Ren'py. Unfortunately - they crash

For me it was True Love Jun'ai Monogatari - somewhere around 2001 I think. I managed to finish it using walkthrough. I didn't know back then the term "VN" - that was, as Frullo NDE pointed out - "dating sim" or "hentai game". I also remember Nocturnal Illusion, Three sisters story and Fatal Relations from that time, but never finished them - they were too convoluted or too long for horny teenager .
Then, last year, "one thing led to another" (flash h-games >> some rather bad OELVNs like "No One but You", some Dharker titles or - heaven forbid! - Sakura Swim Club >>) and I landed on  Dal Segno, which I consider first "proper" VN I read - and I got hooked.

Hahahahaha. I really wonder how the voice recording sessions went, but it does go to show how well she can switch between them. I had no idea she did so many voices. The dynamic between Sasami and Rin is really excellent, too, with Sasami being all prim and cultured (and doing the OHOHO laugh even :D) and Rin constantly butchering her name and not caring at all :D.

I don't see in which way would it be easier. The amount of the operations needed stays the same.  In the meantime (thanks to the power of HEX search in Total Commander  ), I determined which character appears in which script, and made nice chart for it Total amount of extraction operations that have to be manually invoked from ArcTool is 355 (dialogues) + 28 (narration) + 12 (choices) = 395

EDIT make that 384 (344+28+12) - I set bad ranges for "X" counting

lol same tbh. But i'm still on S2 for now, combining it with playing YS VIII. Really great show with cool MC for a change. The only thing i despise -
Other than that - great. Plus at the end of S1

When i started to watch anime, i also decided to rewatch Sailor Moon, remembering childhood. Although in my case there was good translation on TV back then, so i went with it. It's actually 1 of the 2 anime i can watch with translation, others are only with subs, no exceptions. It's a great show, really. So i had my hopes considering Crystal series, but... After S1 i decided that no, don't wanna watch S2, it's just incomparable to the original in all aspects. It's bad.
Added "Yuru Camp" to my backlog when i first had a glance on it. Will start to watch it in the near future as well.

I'll probably get laughed at this, and I'm soooo late to the party, but I'm watching Sailor Moon. Currently I'm near the end of final season (Sailor Stars), 12 episodes left.

When it aired originally I didn't like it at all - partly due to horrible translation that our TV used. Now I'm watching with english subs - and it's surprisingly good. And the music is totally amazing - actually it was the music that made me to finally watch it - I listened to songs, and loved them, so decided to give anime a try.
It's the first anime I'm watching after veeery long break - when I was a kid, in the early '90s, our TV aired some vintage series from '70s and '80s - like Toushou Daimos, Captain Tsubasa, Time Bokkan, Paul no Miracle Daisakusen,  Tiger Mask - most of them were Italian dubs, mind you - and that was my last contact with the medium.
Probably thanks to this (being left out of the loop), I'm still able to appreciate Sailor Moon
    PS Ami-chan best girl!

adamstan reacted to Clephas in Was there a Golden Age of Visual Novels? Will there be a Golden Age?
In earlier SOL VNs (those I just termed moege), there was a tendency for heroine/protagonist character development to be minimal.  Most of the time, the (rather lazy) writers would use a gobi (an ending like uguu or nyaa) and/or a few obvious moe character traits to define the character from the beginning, and they never really swerved from that original character definition, even after the formation of a lovers' relationship.
'Nakige' began as a sub-genre of moege (primarily under the aegis of Key) where rather obvious situations were used to create cheap catharsis with the promise of a 'happy ending' (or the equivalent of) in the aftermath.  As time went on, nakige gradually became distinct from the parent genre, as less moe-focused companies began to produce games that qualified.  The key point of a nakige vs an utsuge, incidentally, is that in a nakige the point is to provide catharsis with a happy result, whereas utsuge provides catharsis but doesn't guarantee a happy result (utsuge started appearing about the same time as nakige but had almost no overlap with moege).
Charage are an evolution of the original moege genre that retains the moe elements while also going more in-depth with character development (more involved and often showing traits that aren't necessarily designed to create a moe result).  Since these turned out to be more popular than their predecessors, 'pure moege' eventually just... vanished (save for a few occasional reboots by companies producing low-budget games).  Depending on the year, anywhere from 60% to 80% of the non-nukige VNs produced in a year will be charage since 2008.
If you want examples of nakige... Kin'iro Loveriche and Komorebi no Nostalgica are both (relatively speaking) recent examples of this.  For an example of a charage, Noble Works, Princess Evangile, or Wagamama High Spec are recent (localized) examples.  Note that 'drama' in a charage path is generally mild, resolved quickly, and leaves little in the way of negative after-effects.  For an example of 'pure' moege, To Heart 2 or the original translated version of Shuffle (before the extensive rewriting seen in Essence + version) would be decent examples.
Edit: Understand, in a broader sense, most non-nukige VNs can be considered 'moege' in the original sense, because most otaku media uses the moe concept in its artwork and character designs.  As such, 'moege' as it is currently used, is just an umbrella term for VNs with such elements.  A 'pure' moege is one where there is little else but such content.

Just finished another ancient VN localised by JAST - Heart de Roommate
The very beginning was painfully slow, and I thought that it will be 5-6/10 max, but then it took off, grew on me, and became rather enjoyable experience.
The "anime" format - complete with teasers, eyecatches, filler episodes , recap episodes etc etc - was actually fun idea, and well executed.
Three main heroines were all nice in their own way, and I found their routes good. Bad first impression quickly disappeared, and I started to like them. They start out as stereotypes, but then during the story they grow out of them. Again I cannot pick best girl, as each route had its charming point, however the main heroine of the game is clearly Asumi.

At the beginning, she's your anime tsundere, but as the story goes, we get to know her other sides, and some redeeming qualities I went with her route first and ended liking her very much.
Next was Tomoe alias MoeMoe :

Very shy at the beginning, but she grows to be stronger. And remains pretty sweet all the time. As for her ending
    Then - Marutan

Loli-looking, but doesn't behave like one Her route was interesting, and quite different from typical eroge story.
The flags that Marumu often used while speaking, reminded me of the scoreboards waved by Miyako  from Majikoi

There are two short side-routes that are available from CG menu if you finish game without choosing any of the main girls. While I liked Namiki-oneesan as the character, her route was rather disappointing, and amounted to little more than a somewhat forced H-scene. Yoshiko-sensei story however was pretty decent.
Then, after completing all main and side routes, Asumi true end is unlocked in aforementioned gallery. And it hits pretty hard (not on Key nakige levels, but still caught me)
The art is great despite games age - it looks much better than Yukizakura I've read before, especially backgrounds. CGs are beautiful, and SD pictures are funny, and used well.
The music was very good too - I especially liked "love theme" ("ALL-DAYS/ALL-WAY") that plays in the main menu, and "sad theme" ("Falling stars"), that we first hear at the very beginning of the game.
After somewhat difficult start, this game really grew on me. 7.5/10
Continuing my exploration of ancient JAST titles, I think I'll go with Kazoku Keikaku (Family Project) next.

Easier to pick on a niche - but then again - if it's such small niche, then what's the point?

    I just finished Yukizakura.
It was nice. Lighthearted high-school rom-com with a little drama. Comedy in this was really good, and characters are likeable (except for EvilGrandVizier Vice Principal of course )
The best route was definitly Saki - her relationship with Yuuji (protagonist), as well as her character had some nice developement and route had pretty good flow. Other routes were enjoyable, but significantly weaker - officially game doesn't have main heroine, but for me it feels like Saki is the one.

Other notable highlights would be Misaki epilogue
and Rei route was good too.
Misato-sensei and Kozue endings were somewhat disappointing for me (the routes themselves were OK, just the endings felt little lackluster).
Nice thing about this game is that other characters don't disappear when you enter heroine route. They play important role throughout whole game. OTOH there is no clear distinction between common and heroine routes, with most key events repeating, so after the first route you'll probably be skipping a lot.
Character sprites and CGs were quite good for such ancient game, backgrounds were OK (except for traincar, which could use some more detail).
Nice, but IMO weaker than To Heart 2, so I give it 7.5
Game can be bought really cheaply on JAST site, so you may give it a try.

PS To have sound on Win7 (and upwards probably) you have to download "imaadp32.acm" codec and put it inside game directory. Otherwise it will complain that the system cannot play ADPCM and there will be no sound. Same goes for Heart De Roommate and other similar games from that era.
And continuing my adventure with old VNs, I'll now try aforementioned Heart De Roommate.

I checked mine. It's a Steam version with +18 patch from NekoNyan. It had two random saves, but it is easy to delete them - just delete everything from the "User Data" folder in game directory. It seems that these were some early saves, as there was no gallery button active in main menu.

I just finished  Sora to Umi ga, Fureau Kanata (Adventure of Lifetime) today. It was good, despite being short. It took me just under 7 hours to complete both routes - but I skipped thru common route the second time. This is what you get, when you cut almost all SoL from moege
It is pretty light hearted. Both girls and their routes are nice. There is some drama, but nothing heavy.
Art and music is typical Pulltop - if you played Konosora or Miagete you'll feel right at home
Translation is OK. As always, there are some awkward lines, but not too many. "Grandmama" for "Obaasama" (that's how Emily calls Machiko) is... umm... e-to... weird  choice, reminding me somehow of "Asa-bat" from SakuSaku. Then there are some lines with missing words (mostly particles), but overall it reads OK. And that's definitely no machine translation, there had to be some humans involved It seems that the RNG gods that picked translation team for MoeNovel were feeling generous this time
I thoroughly enjoyed it, so it gets 8 from me. Short, but fun.

I posted this in "What are you playing" thread, but I think I should put it in game thread too:
I finished To Heart 2 yesterday. It was great experience for me. I just had to get used to the interface (no separate textbox), but it went smoothly.
It is "mother of moeges" (at least for translated ones ) - there were sooo many familiar things I recognized from later games I've read. I liked all routes - Yuma route felt somewhat weaker than the others for me, but it was still enjoyable, I just felt that in some places it didn't flow as smoothly as the rest.
I can't decide on best girl - all were sweet.First route I read was Konomi - nice start, and good one to start with, as her route makes also most of the "common".
Next was Tama-nee I thought she will be my best girl, but then other strong contenders appeared However, she still is somewhere around the top.

Next onto Sasara. After reading some posts I was little afraid, but it actually was good too. I agree - the MC's stubborness was a little over the top, but I was (or probably still am) on similar levels of stupidity, so can't really complain Being scolded by Tama-nee (which she also did in Ruuko route) actually gave me some food for thought. And Sasara herself was sweet.
Manaka - she probably is the MOEst of them all. Nice and sweet route, with some drama thrown in - very good.
Yuma - the tsundere. Lots of funny moments, but later I feel there were some jumps in the story, therefore it is the weaker route for me - but still OK. "Don't think that means you have won!"
Karin - nothing special, but nice. "Guess who?"
Yuuki - this route took me somewhat by surprise - it was great. Yuuki was beautiful and nice, and her ending had some of the KeyMagicTM (it wouldn't feel out of place in "Little Busters"). Little short, but definitely one of the best routes for me.
The Twins (Sango & Ruuri) - nice. Ending was... erm... interesting

Ruuko - out-of-this-world setting , but very enjoyable route. Ruuko is easily one of the best girls in this game. "Ruu!" \o/

Art (characters and backgrounds) looks good. Music was very nice too. And the animated OP was amazing - it's pretty rare to see full animated scenes in VN OP instead of just character sprites with credits next to them and some effects.
Translation was decent - there were some missing or redundant words here and there, but no game-breakers.
    Overall - 8/10 from me.

I'm starting to feel like I might be clogging the thread a little with the frequent posts, but at the same time can't help but want to give thoughts and impressions on the stuff I'm reading since it's quite good.
First, To Heart 2. I'm really enjoying this VN. It's SO FUNNY! I said that last time I posted about it, but it keeps on doing so and doesn't seem to want to get away from that angle, which is great :D. I managed to finish the Sasara route (Student Council President = nearly automatic Best Girl) but having read the route I get the feeling that I made a mistake going for that route first - someone on here mentioned that it had a lot of good ideas btu didn't really flesh them out and I kind of agree with that sentiment. It was still nice though, but not the best way to start the VN I don't think, and it did leave me a bit worried for some of the other routes and how they'll play out. I'm now reading the Konomi route and enjoying it. The thing is, though, that the story continues to unfold and I'm liking what I read. There was a scene last night which had me in stitches (more below), and that's just one of several. It leads into the other thing I mentioned the last time I posted about the VN - it's hard to choose what route to do next because there are several that seem appealing. I really want to see what would happen in the Tama-nee route, considering how she treats him :D. I also want to see what happens with Yuma (I'm convinced she needs help hahaha), Komaki (who seems interesting and is the one I'd been thinking of saving for last) and now Karin. As far as Karin goes, the scene mentioned earlier was
    To Heart 2 spoilers
It was so hard to stifle what would've been really heavy laughter last night while reading that scene. I'm really enjoying the VN though, and I'm really looking forward to reading what happens next. I also really like how thus far the routes feel quite different from each other. Hopefully that stays the case the more of them I read.
The other VN I'm reading atm is Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth. I did manage to get a copy as I was hoping to, and have already put almost 7h30 into it in only a few days, and invariably, every time I decide I want to read, I read more than planned, so I'm really being sucked into and immersed by the story. I'm really enjoying how it's unfolded thus far, though. It seems to be somewhat different than Mask of Deception, but that's to be expected, and fortunately, it's providing a lot of what I like still (the funny SoL moments) while continuing to amp up the story. I'd heard it mentioned that it has several twists that surprise, and that's been my experience as well - I didn't expect
Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth spoilers
With everything that's happened, it really seems like things are going to come to a head, and I really wonder how the events are going to play out. It's still early days yet, but I think I could very well give it an 8/10 as well.
I really hope that Atlus continue to localize and publish their stuff in the West, because between just these two VNs Aquaplus really are becoming one of my favorite VN studios. Actually, on that note, there's another thing to be said here. I'm not sure if it's thanks to Atlus, Aquaplus, or someone else, but both Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth come with extra goodies in the box (for the launch editions at least) - an artbook and a pillowcase respectively. IMO it's a really nice gesture for them to do. Neither of those are things I'd really pay much attention to, or even prioritize buying, and both of those things would've meant *some* extra money being spent to produce, package, and ship them instead of just the discs / carts and cases. Even so, they're included, and it makes it really hard to feel like either of the titles were a bad deal in terms of money spent.

Well, I completed the game (and then skipped through JP version).
To my utmost surprise, I think I actually like all-ages version more Only in Hikari route h-scenes are well placed in my opinion - in the others, some of them seem a little forced, as if they were put there just to meet the quota.
As for all-ages version - it feels quite natural in all routes, and I actually liked some of the replacement scenes better.
So to sum it up - I didn't feel like anything was missing from all-ages version. It is decently reworked, so it doesn't feel "incomplete" or "butchered" at all to me. Waaaay different than poor hackjob they did with Konosora. Translation still has some weak points, but it's almost decent . So if you don't mind lack of h-scenes - it is worth playing.

+1 for Dal Segno. Had some tear-jerking moments (at least for me)
and some say it is too slow, but I enjoyed it nevertheless.

As for other school-romances, besides those posted by @littleshogun, you may also try Princess Evangile, Noble Works and KoiChoco. I liked them all too.

If anybody is interested, I compared Hikari route between english and japanese versions to check how the h-scenes were handled. It seems like Pulltop actually made separate all ages version, but released it only in English - for example there are some voiced lines in all-ages version, that I didn't found in original (although I could have missed some of them as I was mostly skipping through it).
Here are differences that I found.

So overally I think it was handled pretty cleverly. Dialogue was reworked - and it seems that even some voiced lines were added or altered - to seam it together and don't leave the impression of "butchered" story - it all flows smoothly. It's a pity that they didn't release +18 english version, but as for making all-ages version - not bad job.

It seems to be slightly different exe version. All-ages steam version is bilingual (like steam version of Little Busters) - it allows to switch between english and japanese text. +18 version from Denpasoft doesn't have this feature.
But sometimes they don't release a patch/dlc, but just separate +18 version via Denpasoft.
