  1. Thanks for the reply. Yes, in my experience, it DOES seem like there would be a market. There's fans like me who started otome games such as Hiiro no Kakera over ten years ago and now that we're older, surely we want older/more mature protagonists/more mature situations, right? My concern is that making a game potentially +18...it would cut down on the # of consumers, wouldn't it? Is it better to design a game with 2 modes, all ages and +18? (although, that sounds like so much work...)
  2. A comedy in which the MC gets raped? *mind blown* I can't even...;;; *mind blown a second time* I mean, I know there is a certain bit of suspension of disbelief when it comes to games, but that's just horrifying. Thanks for the rec! I don't mind untranslated ones as I can read most of it (although vocabulary in kanji from the Taisho era might be a little more difficult and I'll have to bug my mom "Hey Mom, what's this mean?" every couple of minutes. I tried to download a trial but I keep getting an error screen :/ I'll keep the company in mind though. I'm sure I can find some hard copies when I go to Taiwan in the summer. (I read the review where the reviewer was complaining about the guys and how creepy they turned out ;;; but I'm kind of super interested in creepy guys in otome games...)
  3. So, just kind of piggy-backing (is that the right term?) off my previous thread, re: finding good +18 otome with good artwork... Is there a genuine interest for +18 otome games, with good art style and heavy, plotwise? I'm just going to come out and admit that yes, I AM working on an +18 otome game, but I'm only familiar with the Asian market and while otome games are a niche market, the +18 otome games are a niche within a niche, making me worry that I might be producing a product that ultimately will not have an audience in a English speaking market. So TLDR; would you play/buy an otome game with +18 elements?
  4. Hi! I'm looking to play an 18+ otome game, preferably from Japan, with some sexual content, and good storyline/art, ala Otomate games or Mystic Messenger. Thanks in advance for the recs!
  5. So...you're an Indonesian company, but taking money in JPY?? Is your company based in JP or something? (anyways...) Good luck though, looks like you guys are going to hit your KS goal. I'll check out the demo this weekend and come back my thoughts
  6. I'm watching Violet Evergarden. Every Thursday, I can be counted on to bawl my eyes out and this week was definitely no exception. Usually, I despise shows like this as I find tearjerkers to be the lowest of the low when eliciting emotion, but this show...man, it really got to me.
  7. Haha, maybe I should edit the title of the thread to read "How much reading in a VN is too much?" Because tbh, there is no such thing as too much reading in general life.
  8. Just curious how much reading you feel is too much I'm currently writing the script for my otome game, and it's really an eyeopener. I've been writing professionally (novels) for over 10 years now, and for some reason, writing a script for this game is much harder than writing any of my books. The type of language used seems to be different, the shift into present-tense is really unnerving and I've got to consider actions and expressions when writing this. I have to consider the adage (show don't tell) but I'm having a hard time doing that without being too wordy. Writing books is definitely different from writing a script or screenplay and I'm eating a little bit of humble pie thinking I'd have a fairly easy time of it. (which I'm not, blargh) I'd love to see the names of some VNs you felt were too wordy. Thanks muchly!
  9. I couldn't tell if you were being serious or not, but this still made me laugh quite a bit
  10. ...800k? Jesus. That's a door stopper of a word count. How long have you been working on the script? (also, whoever is editing that many words, they have my sympathies. I can't even edit 5k of my own stuff without wanting to kill myself)
  11. But see, that's the thing, right? With visual novels, sure, the art is important, but what should be the most important is the story itself. :/ You'd think a company specializing in visual NOVELS would know better than to write in such an awful way. Or maybe I'm overreacting. The vast majority of the reviews on Steam are very complimentary =_=;;;
  12. Thank you for the advice! I've kind of been all over Asia and America, mostly the big cities. LA, Honolulu, Chicago, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai and in a few months, Saigon. (I've visited Saigon before) Honestly, it's fun now, but I feel like it would grow old in a few years. My SO has been to Hong Kong, but I have not :3 And no, I don't think your question was too personal. My life is pretty much an open book. Thanks so much for the list of games! I'll have to check out Code Realize. I played Mystic Messenger a bit, but honestly, because I spent a great deal of my childhood and adult life in Korea, I don't find the setting or the characters very interesting. I've dated Korean guys (I went to college in Seoul, actually met my SO in Seoul) and most of them were...not as dashing as the k-dramas make them seem. So, MM was kind of ruined for me :/
  13. Flashbacks, done in such a way, effectively kill the story for me. Why don't the writers pepper in backstory so it weaves naturally with the story? It seems like people are way more forgiving of writing faux pas (god, what's the plural form of faux pas?) in VNs/games than an actual novel.
  14. Haha, introductions are hard, I agree. How much info is too much or too little? (but seriously, hello, from another newbie here)
  15. Well, thank you for the correction. I was under the assumption the reader would assume I was referring to computer, but I guess I was wrong :/
  16. A little off topic, but as awful as 4kids is, has anyone seen what Bandai did to Escaflowne? *dies* (Now that I think about, I think 4kids also did a dub of One Piece...which I have rather conveniently scrubbed from my mind...) Honestly, though, I'll all for a company that attempts to broaden the audience. Growing up in Asia, I knew a lot of 12 year old girls played VNs and otome games (myself included).
  17. I tried playing fault - milestone one and jesus, it was SO BORING. The art was fine, but all the explanation about the magic system was dumped in the beginning of the game and it drove me bonkers. I couldn't even make out of the prologue. (and i have the sequel too, ffs) All that info dump would've never been allowed if I sent it off to my editor =_=;;;;
  18. I know I'm super late to this, but I'm just now getting into Re: Alistair (it's market research, swear to God). I'm also playing Date Warp and Long Live the Queen. As you can tell, I'm super interested in how Western indie companies are making their games, to compare them to their Japanese counterparts.
  19. The majority of Japanese-made otome games seem to have heroines in high school...I mean, okay, high school is kind of seen through rose-lenses there, but ffs, the majority of otome game players in JP (and here now) are older now. I want older heroines. College is acceptable, but workspace otome romances are also very much welcome. (this is why I'm designing my own game) Voltage has some pretty good ones, as well as Solmare, but those haven't really made the transition from mobile to CPU yet. (then again, the majority of casual gamers don't really play on computer...)
  20. Hi! Thanks for the welcome :3 Thanks! Actually, it was your thread on Lemma that made me remember this forum. I used to be a fuwa waaaaayyy a while ago. Honestly, I'm surprised but happy the forum is still up. And yes, that's why I decided to make the lateral move from writing books to visual novels and otome games. I think there's a severe lack of games for older ladies who don't want to play as a high school girl and want their stories a little spicier. Voltage makes some adult-oriented games, but the translations are a little too simplistic for my tastes and quite frankly, a lot of times the heroine still acts like she's in high school :/ I remember reading a VN on the Play Store called "The Man with the Pearl Earring" and it really got to me. There was next to no player input, but the story was fascinating enough and I'd love to present something like that for human consumption/enjoyment. Hi Thanks for the idea *_*
  21. Thanks for the interview! As a fledgling game designer, this was quite illuminating, especially the section regarding Steam
  22. Haha, as of late the indie writing/romance community has become super toxic, so I've kind of just thrown my hands up in the air and went "EFF THIS" and have gone a different route. Luckily, otome games/VNs are very words-intensive, so right now, it really doesn't feel like my work day is much different than usual. Except there's a lot more arting. The great thing is, now, I don't feel guilty about drawing because I can justify it but saying "It's for the game." So, yes, I am working on a game! It's called PS I Love U and as it's my first foray into making a game, it's not a terribly ambitious game, with four routes, 3 romanceable characters, maybe 50-60k max word count. What about you? Are you working on a game? Thank you for the welcome! I'm super excited As an older woman who started playing VNs and otome games almost 20 years ago, I've always wanted to design my own game. So, here goes nothing! Yo, yo, yo, Fiddle!
  23. Hello, everyone! I'm Fin and I'm a writer by trade, but currently stepping away from writing for the foreseeable future, to work on my childhood dream, which is working on video games I live near Shanghai, but I'm moving to Ho Chi Minh at the end of June and then I'm off to Taipei in December, hopefully for a while. (My SO is an international school teacher, so we kind of wander around the world like pirates) I'm a big fan of otome games, my first one being Angelique on the GBA...(haha, I can't believe how old I am). I used to be a console player, but have recently gotten into computer VNs and otome games. Anyways, I'm really glad to be here and I hope to get along with everyone!
