  1. Yes there is, for the translated ones we can count actual word count from the game script. There are even programs that do that for us these days. The untranslated ones, we can take the average reading speed and infer the time it would take for someone to read it to completion. It would be a rough estimate, but it wouldn’t be a bad way to measure the size since Japanese words and phrases hold more information than English in terms of density. Excuse me, but wasn’t there a book that won a Guinness world record for longest novel? *1 second Google Search later* Yeah, it was that one by Marcel Prost, in search of lost time. Well that debate has been settled, to be fair, we don’t have a Guinness world record category....YET.
  2. I love how we still don’t have a clear answer here. So many contenders for longest visual novel to date, but no winner for some reason.
  3. Oh hi, I don’t consider myself a senpai, but if you love VNs and actually discussing them vs r/visualnovels; you have come to the right place. Best part about here is that nobody can downvote your controversial opinions, if you have any. If you want a Santa hat, @Fiddle got you covered https://forums.fuwanovel.net/topic/21329-santa-hats-for-your-avatars-once-again/?tab=comments#comment-499749
  4. Read novels. Like not visual novels, but actual physical novels from Sarah Waters. For some reason, yuri is stuck in high school with no plot. Frankly yuri means lesbain love, so all of these cliches need to be abandoned so that the medium can branch out. I recommend reading lesbian love fiction stories to hone in your unique style. Tipping the Velvet is a fantastic lesbian love story. Go to your local library and start reading lesbian fiction. I guarantee your better off creating your own foothood into the yuri genre like this than going by the trappings of cliches. A good yuri is a good story. A good story has few more components that make it good. Such as good characters. A plotline. that kind of stuff. Do you want ecchi, personally, I think your story should be good that the potential hentai serves the story. Never add erotica in for the sake of audience. Do what you can for the story. When it comes to drama, I really want more drama in my yuri. However it seems that I am in the minority that's why we have so many moege yuriges running around here. So, if I were you, I would make a plotege with romance. 50% romance 50% action or mystery, or horror or etc. Can they start out as friends? It's your story, do what you want. However, it's better to start as friends. A lot of writers love taking the easy way out and writing characters as in already in a relationship. To help with this, go out and listen to what people in real life talk about. Or better yet, you start conversations with people and bring those into the narrative. Girls talk about things just like guys. It's a matter of how they talk. So. If I were you, I would try to create well-rounded characters with arcs. That's essential. Also, try anything but a high school. My goodness.
  5. That's not the case. Most of the VN is slice of life stuff. I am not saying they should dramatize all of it but the my gripe is that most of the VN is filled with stuff that's not character development nor pot stuff. Just mundane things. I mean every visual novel has SOL elements KnS, Higurashi, etc but SeaBed was just filled to the brim with it. Solving the mystery is not point of the mystery? ehhhh, I think that's but much. It's one thing for a VN to leave readers wondering, but SeaBed has too many of those questions. When it didn't warrant it. Without spoiling it, there's literally several questions that are left unanswered and you spent the whole VN WAITING for those questions to be resolved and they never do.... :<( I mean.... I feel like I should just write a spoiler-filled review on SeaBed to air out of all my feelings. While the VN is still fresh on my mind. I am okay with some mundane drama. I just cannot deal with all of the SOL. It bores the shit out of me. What got me into seabed was that earlier this year @Turnip Sensei recommended it. I was in artsy visual novel mood. I bought SeaBed and let it sit on my Steam page for a while because I was reading subahibi and KnS2. Then I started reading it at the beginning of this fall semester, I didn't how heavy the SOL elements were until like 10 hours into reading. Wow. This comment is really telling given the context lolz. Honestly, from this comment I was under the impression that it was going to be some deep sea mystery yuri VN. Man, was I wrong. Yeah, I saw that video when it was uploaded it before I read SeaBed and after it. I was motivated because I wanted more mystery. I love mystery. I also love yuri. But slice of life, not so much. I love Zeria as much as the next person, but I really expected more of a mystery yuri drama from that review. Even if it was slow paced. But, my gripe is that it takes forever for stuff to happen. You really don't get a great deal of drama here in this VN. In other words, the seriousness of the situations are meh. Given your comment and everyone elses comment. Yuri is built in with certain cliches that lends itself more into the SOL category. Honestly, that's weird. However, I understand. Damn. I really thought the yuri genre would at least have one VN that's more action based. I really appreciate everyone's comments, there's a winner. Yeah, I am going to read that. I don't care for adult content. I found this VN after trying the Fuwa recommendation system. So when I came back this post, I wasn't suprised when everyone else was recommending this too. I am a bit upset, because I feel like I am settling here. Even though, I had really broad scope. A VN that's a yuri with plot. I am going to take a look at Nurse Nurse Addiction I will take a look at it. If the common route is quick and easy, that's nothing. I just don't wanna another 90% SOL VN. SeaBed is 15-20 hours long. Yet, it took me about a semester to get through it all. Meanwhile Kara No Shoujo 1, I read that in 2 weeks. Easily. All of the routes. For real though. I completely agree.
  6. Get back in the damn robot Shinji Get back in the damn forums @UnlimitedMoeWorks
  7. I am a bit lost here too. Why is plot and romance mutually exclusive in this context? In my head I was thinking of a VN like where character x and y, would have a goal to accomplish. Save the world, Become billionaires, or something like get recover from a traumatic event. The goal can be anything but while they are trying to do that, they develop feelings for each other, shit happens, insert tearjerkering moments, character development and the typical GOOD END, BAD END, stuff. At first I thought flowers would be a good contender, but you mentioned that it’s not really concerned with plot progression....? Ok? So, I am not looking for “Subahibi but full yuri”; I know that doesn’t exist, but there has to be a “Fate/Stay Night but full yuri” or anything similar to that. Plus, Seabed is like 99% light-hearted. You’re making it seem as though it’s dramatic, but it really wasn’t. Hell even the TIPS scenes barely had any drama. There were only like two scenes where I felt dramatic tension, and the rest was your standard slice of life stuff. Plus the mystery is really weird, because what’s the mystery, the prologue establishes something, but by the end of it, there’s no reveal. It’s not like you have an “aha!” Moment when reading SeaBed. (Sidenote: has anyone seen Maria Watches Over Us, because if Flowers resembles that, then crap. I have to keep looking )
  8. Because I just finished SeaBed a few moments ago and I can definitely say, I really don’t like too much slice of life elements. I like it when it’s in small doses while a PLOT is going on. Because that’s what I think Slice of Life excels at. When it’s small and used to calm down after intense moments happen, however SeaBed was so much Slice of Life that, I just wanted it to be over. I think the VN was not for me. I like down time for my waifus and husbandos, but that shouldn’t take up 90% of the VN run time. There are exceptions, such that it’s a comedy. Being that the Slice of life moments are hilarious and I can just turn my brain off while reading. During one of my previous posts, everybody were recommending KS, but the caveat was that it was light on plot. And I was like, oh dear, I don’t wanna read another SeaBed. There has to be a yuri VN that has a solid plot line that will hook me in. SeaBed’s characters don’t even go through a character where they completely change by the end of the VN. So, I am left feeling like....nothing. Contrasted to what I felt after Subahibi. There was quite a bit of yuri romance in that VN. Especially Zukaro x Kimika. Another drawback of SeaBed, is that we don’t really see Sachiko and Tanako develop their feelings for one another since they are childhood friends. Which is weird because a good chunk of the VN is in flashbacks and them spending time when one another. I just want a yuri for 2019 where Girl meets Girl, develop feelings, shit happens, and they overcome that shit because of their love for each other. I am crying at some point. They live happily ever after because I chose the right route.
  9. Thank you, I feel like Coco’s route came out of nowhere. 16 year old me was whiplashed because it got meta for some reason. I don’t mind metanarratives like DDLC, but using that as a true end came across as an asspull to me. Like when You said that she wanted to unlock Blick Winkel I was...just...eh... Personally, I felt like it gotten way too out of hand for a simple story of several teenagers trapped inside a underwater amusement park. (Wow, that sentence is so fucking surreal after reading it lolz). Another problem, is that once BW is unlocked they are basically God. BW can do anything. So, the last moments of saving Coco’s life is basically going back into a literal previous point in space time to save her from her “inevitable” demise. Sigh.... Despite that, this is one of the reasons I cannot recommend Ever17 to newbies, because unlocking the true route without a walkthrough is hard as hell. I spent days just trying to do that. Plus, you cannot tell which choices lead into certain routes or not. They don’t really seem that consequential like Saya No Uta. Finally, metanarratives are really dangerous to rely on because you are literally shattering the immersion by breaking the fourth wall. Honestly, what’s worse is that I am not even sure how else they could’ve ended it. It’s not a good introductory visual novel because of the length and the ending. (Full disclosure it’s been 6 years since I’ve read Ever17, so I may gotten some things wrong.) But seriously, thanks again for your post. It’s refreshing to see someone who isn’t drinking the “Ever17 is kamige” kool-aid.
  10. This is awkward. I wrote my senior thesis on Saya No Uta, Kara No Shoujo, Doki Doki Literature Club, and Phenomeno. It was during the summer of this year. I was actually DMing people for sources, and frankly it sucks. The VN medium is so small, but yet can be argued that it’s been around for a little bit less than the video game world. Now, when it comes to academic recognition, it’s kinda a double edged sword in my opinion; because are there quite a few hardcore fans who don’t the VN medium to reach anime levels of pop culture. So imagine if the academic world were to touch this side of the otaku fandom. I think their fears are unfounded because I do believe that VNs are truly an artistic medium. And you know what happened to me when I told r/visual-novels. I was mocked, downvoted, and I ran to Fuwanovel. For VNs to truly have academic recognition, we would need a EVN kamige of our own that can break into the mainstream. Academics do spend a good chunk of their time studying popular works because it’s fun for them and it gets them citations. However, as I just said, VNs need to earn it. For example, why would an academic read a one of those nukiges? To find some deeper poetic meaning? That’s the thing to bear in mind. Will VNs receive the same of kind of academic treatment like Movies and Books, well.... remember, Video Games are STILL not getting academic representation. Relevant video: So, I think we will get it. However, the term visual novel is arguably kinda hard to explain to people. Because normies think graphic novel, comic book, etc. So for my thesis I was arguing that Visual Novels are art, high art. I was using a defintion from the standford enclyopedia, and building arguments from the VNs I’ve read into it. Also, I am not a humanities guy. I am a computer science major. My professor approved of it and it’s not yet—published anywhere. But honestly, I wish I can elaborate more, but @Plk_Lesiak beat me to it. But, I am an American undergrad at some eastern liberal arts university. @zxdvas, if you want to read my thesis. I will send it to you. It takes a while for things to get published. That’s why I haven’t made a post on it yet.
  11. @Fiddle, I will let you decide which hat for me senpai.
  12. I think we just dodged major flame war. @Dreamysyu, thanks for seeing my point.
  13. So @Zidan209, is Rance longer than unineko? Wait, Wait—- what’s Higurashi Sui? And how in the world can you have a 20mb script? Does that mean it’s longer than rance? You would think there would be a clear answer
  14. I was inspired to make this post by a short video I saw here: I read Subahibi completely while getting the true end of Kara no Shoujo 2; I was reading them simultaneously during the month of August. I heard some people say that Subahibi was longer than MLA, but it really wasn’t to me. I finished it in 2 and half weeks. Meanwhile, I read Fate/Stay Night and that VN took me 2 months to read completely. Then there was the Higurashi VN series, that took me all of Sping 2012 to read completely. So, what do you think is truly the longest visual novel?
  15. Bro, you’re like one of the wisest people on this site. I remember reading one of your posts when I was the new kid around the block. One things you said to me was that you liked my name because I was inspired by Hate+ You’re like a walking enclyopedia for the visual novel medium, well other than @Clephas I greatly appreciated your wisdom. Keep those EVN blog posts coming. We are on the cusp of a EVN renaissance!
  16. Does the staff page still need work? I can help since I am a front end (I might end up full stack now, given all the backend shit I had to do as of late) web developer.
  17. And? That doesn’t mean that they are good thing for storytelling.
  18. I am not upset like I was when I first read it. I just don’t like that kind of storytelling because it kinda defeats the purpose of being a VN. Because when someone asks me, is Ever17 nonlinear? Despite it having multiple endings, it’s actually a linear story that just likes to fuck with you.
  19. That’s my point exactly! All of her route is merely a stepping stone for the one true end, versus being an end in itself.
  20. Yeah, I thought it was fine until I learned about the true ending. To me it seems kinda like an asspull to be honest. Maybe I should make a forum post about this in detail. I mean it’s a great VN, but that VN is proof as to why the “One True End” thing annoys me to all hell. [Because, I just wanted to be with Tsugumi and the fact that her ending is basically a bad end: is kinda annoying. I mean come on, I spent all this time hanging out with her, getting to know her, just so we can be fated in a stupid bad end.... 14 year old me at the time was heartbroken.]
  21. Yeah, you’re right. It’s a yuri, but there’s not a lot of romance happening. There’s barely any plot: when there’s any plot. I am like, “Oh shit. Stuff is actually happening!” I want less of that My only exception to the plot heavy preference is that it’s a comedy. But I am willing to try KS because of the consensus I see before me.
  22. Thanks for correcting me, I said replaced my comment with Halo in place but my argument still stands.
  23. Heaven’s Feel is such trash. UBW was so much fun to read. Also, Fate/Hollow literally feels like a gag visual novel half the time. Hell even the creator said it’s like a dream, so don’t think to much. Now back to the point.Yeah I am not a big fan of “One True End” because it kinda defeats the purpose of visual novels a bit. For example, Ever17 annoyed my ass off with that kinda thing. It just comes out of nowhere. Having mutitple endings of equal merit is literally why I think visual novels excellent at. Can movies do that: nope. Can anime do that: nope. Can comics do that: nope. Can video games do that? Sure, however it’s very genre specific RPGs. You’re not going to get a Halo game with a multiple endings. Furthermore, multiple endings to the level that visual novels do them have only been seen in certain JRPGs like Neir Automata. It’s one thing to do a linear story, a kinetic novel, but honestly I don’t like the fact there’s a true end as if my choices were somehow wrong. Like skip your VN, my true end is with Waifu X or Husbando Y etc. This really sucks in romantic visual novels where characters are basically routes to several endings. I mean imagine having to fall in love with a certain character to only learn that their ending is not really the true ending because you have to go with a stupid character that you don’t like just so you can get to the true ending. Another point is that multiple equal endings allows for there to be debate. You know, discussion, over which ending is best. Ideally, when you create a VN or a some kind of artwork, you want to leave the reader, viewer, player etc. something to think about. Having multiple endings could lead to a grand mystery that will leave the audience guessing forever vs “here is the true end! You can stop the debate. You can go home now.” Everyone loves theorizing shit. Give them more fuel to theorize by having multiple endings so they can theorize all kinds of headcannons to satisfy their curiosity.
  24. I am 5/6 the way done with SeaBed and for some reason, I have a strong urge to read lots of lesbian romance. So, I am looking for the best romantic lesbian visual novels to kick start my 2019. Bonus points if it’s plot heavy visual novel. SeaBed has reminded me as to why I can’t really tolerate too much slice of life stuff.
  25. Cliche. I know but I am sincerely thankful for my family. Even though, they don't share half of all my interests or even one fourth of them. Despite that, I swear I will get at least one of my family members to read a visual novel with one. Something basic. Something small. But something like Air Pressure. They have been there for me through thick and thin. I've learned so much from them. I literally wouldn't be here if it wasn't for my family. So fun fact, I'm an argumentative person. I get into arguments a lot, and so my aunt told me that one day, she got into an argument with my dad; He just stormed out into the middle of the cold night, then, the next thing she knew, my mother was pregnant. This is so surreal to me. My dad would yell at my Aunt, you're why "Happiness+ is here!" What are you most thankful for and why?
