Ramaladni reacted to Zakamutt in Shinimasu 100% tl celebration thread
After finishing off Shinimasu - which involves also translating the side story, the 325 line fd, and managing everything that comes after tl in the process - I'm looking to translate Shimaisou. It has a pretty different writing style which will allow me to write fancy which is something I enjoy. It's also a commercial product so if anyone's interested I might sell out.
I think I've generally adopted a slightly lower quality standard than the autistic level I started with, while still keeping it fairly high (and probably also gotten better while working on it which helps). I've probably also gotten better at getting work done in general; I think I used to be at 20 lines per hour, and I can probably do 50 now. I basically have the same philosophy as when I started - it should be okay English after I'm done with it, with the editor doing polish - but it's slightly tempered by knowing that if my speed is too low I'll just never get anything done.
You should ask HMN when I'm reading Muramasa but it's like still more than a year away I should think.
Yeah it's like #5 on my list or something. I was mostly being considerate because you seem kind of weak and 3k lines at least is plausible for a near-worthless individual such as me or quite probably you (you did quit halfway through a 120 line doujin) to finish unlike whatever the other games have.

Ramaladni reacted to Clephas in Western Visual Novel Publishers Often Release Games at a Loss Due to Piracy (ft. words from CEO of Sol Press, Xeviax)
Newton was a poor choice overall.
From what I've seen of their releases, their choices for localization are almost exclusively mid to low quality charage, with the only significant announcements (from the games I've played, anyway) being HHG, Irotoridori, and Witch's Garden.  All three of these are also listed as TBA, so who knows when they will come out... and they are also ridiculously long and thus expensive to translate.
The Western market is currently on a SOL craze, but the market is already saturated.  While there isn't a variety, there is enough SOL localized to get thoroughly sick of the genre if you don't have a natural aptitude for reading that stuff constantly.  Sol Press's poor sales are occurring because they've made poor choices of games to localize (the ones that have already been completely localized).  To be blunt, none of the games they have completed localization of so far were pushed by the community before they were announced, and none of them were anywhere near the top of anyone's list to try.
While picking titles by little-known and low-budget companies, as well as old titles that are immensely forgettable probably let them keep the money they shelled out to the Japanese side to a minimum, the titles they chose weren't titles that could compete with the higher-end SOL titles already available here in the West.  As such, Sol Press doesn't really have my sympathy.  Their own poor business practices are what are killing their profits, not piracy, though piracy does harm the industry as a whole (though not nearly as bad as companies say it does).

Ramaladni reacted to sanahtlig in Western Visual Novel Publishers Often Release Games at a Loss Due to Piracy (ft. words from CEO of Sol Press, Xeviax)
Think of it this way: who is the audience for English eroge?  Young males (mainly in the US).  What is the situation of young males with time on their hands these days?  Usually buried in student loan debt trying to get through university.  Do you honestly expect these people to buy eroge on credit?  As for the population that doesn't go through university, their wages are generally lower and they have less time--also not a recipe for spending on high-priced time-consuming entertainment that you can only enjoy alone.  Simply put, this is a demographics issue that doesn't have an easy solution.  A pirated copy isn't a lost sale.  Limiting piracy isn't going to increase their entertainment budgets.  They'll just find their porn somewhere else.
As for why Sol Press specifically might be having profitability issues: just look at their game lineup.  They're selling a bunch of medium to long length games that are expensive and time-consuming to translate (and consume).  They're all moege, appealing to more or less the same restricted audience.  It's one thing to be a developer and stick to what you're good at (creatively).  But sticking to one genre or game type doesn't do you much good as a publisher.  Diversification spreads your risk and drives traffic from different audiences.  That's good for business.
It's also important to point out that Sol Press is relatively new and doesn't have much of a following or brand recognition.  In addition, VN sales have a long tail in the West, and they don't have enough titles or sales history to benefit from that just yet.
As for the article itself, it seems to stumble from one bit of nonsense to another.  In what reality is releasing games sooner after the Japanese release going to decrease piracy?

I have nothing to offer that can help, but I do have a couple of opinions on this topic.
Whilst I ordinarily would add to the pile of 'don't become an editor if you aren't a native',  for this particular field that are Visual Novels, I have to say: Go for it.
There are so many good stories in Western VNs and even some fan translations that are simply unbearable due to how they use and misuse English. If your efforts end up alleviating these cases even a little, I'd say they were worthwhile. Maybe to some 'making crap a bit less crappy' doesn't sound like a goal, but I assure you, as part of the casual plebs that consume anything and everything without caring about the original material or anything like that, just that little bit of improvement makes a huge difference.

  17. Confused
Ramaladni reacted to Fred the Barber in Blogs, articles, videos about editing (VN and otherwise)?
Not to sound too discouraging, but I don't think non-native English speakers should be editors. Non-native English speakers who become known as writers of English are such a rarity that everyone will give you the exact same two examples when the topic comes up (Nabokov and Conrad). It's very, very hard to make up for all those formative years missing out on constant immersion in a language. Now, all that warning delivered, regarding how to learn...
    - Every line editor I know has said that what they do, they do based pretty much purely on instinct. However, instincts can obviously be honed. Most of what I've learned about line editing in the last couple years, I've learned from people critiquing my work (mostly QAs on projects; I've been fortunate to be blessed with a lot of good QAs over the years). Giving and receiving feedback is always a sensitive thing, though, so people offering critique have to be careful about how they approach it, and people receiving it have to do their damnedest to try to take it constructively. Sometimes there are failures on one or both sides of that equation, but don't let that turn you off the process; it's the most important thing to constantly improving.
    - Beyond that, still on line editing, I think I've just read a few random internet articles over the past few years which helped give me things to think about and to process (e.g., "conciseness", "precision", etc.). I have a blog on this site (here) where I've tried to write up some things in that vein myself, but take my opinions with a grain of salt (in the first place, they're old and from when I was still fairly inexperienced; and in the second place, I'm still not all that experienced or that high up on the totem pole anyway).
    - Copy editing, on the other hand, is a much more technical process with a lot more black-and-white issues, more rules to remember, and so forth. Lately I've been reading Dreyer's English, which is an approachable and entertaining general survey sort of book on the topic which I would recommend. Depending on how serious you are, you could also look into getting a big fat style book.
    - And above all else, read constantly: read authors writing in their native tongue (not translations), and especially read good writers. Read across various genres. Read poetry. Let me say that again and italicize it, because it's important: read poetry. If you find some you like, memorize it; memorizing a few pages of poetry is not nearly so hard as it sounds, and it's extremely good for your writing brain.
To the last question: in my experience, editing work for VNs involves clicking through rows in a spreadsheet or a tool, fussing with wording constantly, occasionally rewriting things wholesale, and rarely checking the original line to see why the thing written in the translation box doesn't make sense to me (not an option if you are working on an OELVN, I suppose, but I assure you, it will still happen...). It's like very, very slowly playing a VN where the writing has a tendency to make you groan.

Ramaladni reacted to aliciarune in Recommendations of Visual Novels to Read for Depression
So, I read someone's thread and even responded to them about what to read since they were down. Now it got me thinking about how I may need some things to read. I'm planning soon to read Higurashi and/or Umeniko, but would like some more visual novels of what I should read. Basically I suffer from depression and certain visual novels are good for escape. I haven't read many, nor have finished many, and really only know certain ones, but I'm opening to anything with a good story, characters, and art. I'm fine if it's yaoi, yuri, otome, or BxG. I'm fine if they are light hearted visual novels or drama. Any genre is fine. Not really wanting 18 titles though, but if they are good I will give it a read. I'm a slow reader, so this list will take time.
So yeah, I'm looking for a list of visual novels to read over the next two months or so. They don't have to be super happy and can even be sci fi and mystery. I just need something to help with my anxiety and depression for right now. Been a bad month or so for me.

No, you don't need to buy a new computer lol. Ever heard of PC-98 emulators? There's also emulators for FM Towns, MS-DOS... And like @Dergonu said, if you want to play Windows 95/98/2000/XP games, you'll probably want to play them under a VM. I've even had to emulate W7 under W10 before (mostly Mink games).
That said, there are extremely rare cases where you need native OS to actually be able to play the game...and even rarer, the actual machine. I have a friend who actually bought an old Japanese computer (not sure which) just to play one game... Well, it also makes for a nice antique to have around the house.
You can try checking the company's page to see if they're still selling it, perhaps as a digital release.. If not, they are effectively abandonware and I'd call that a gray area...but this is not the right place to ask for illegal downloads. Like the others said, try and look for used copies, but good luck with that.

If you want to buy old eroge from the 90s, Japanese Amazon is a good place to start. People usually sell used versions on there. Getting digital versions of old games can prove difficult, as many companies either never got around to making them, or went under before they could. (Like Zone.)
You will need a virtual machine of an old OS, or a computer running an old OS in order to play them, usually. A handful will be able to run on W10 with the right compatibility settings, but it’s rare.
