  1. Rewatching Steins;Gate as I'm playing the VN. Realized that the anime has a tighter pacing, as opposed to the VN's verbosity/infodump. It might just be one of the few anime out there (aside from Clannad and Kanon 2006) that surpasses its VN source. Just about everything was done better than the VN, including putting "Skyclad Observer" at the end of the story rather than as the opening.

Of course, there are some changes the anime made that I felt were unnecessary, but they're really more like minor changes and nitpicks than real criticisms. There's also a lack of multiple endings, which made the VN more interesting as I was able to change the fate of Okabe myself. That's an advantage most VNs with choices have over their anime counterparts unfortunately - the power of choice. And of course, the anime couldn't adapt the very fun and interesting emails. Aside from the ones that require you to respond to earn the achievements, the other non-obligatory emails were still amusing enough to read, as are Okabe's replies to them. That's unfortunately one very fun part of the game the anime couldn't adapt. Wish they could've made a special section at the end of each episode for the emails though, like, "Okabe Replies to His Lab Mems!" or something.

Anyway, I'm reaching the end of Chapter 5 soon... It's almost that mood whiplash moment where everything is about to change for Okabe's carefree life... Mwahahaha. That's the real choice of Steins;Gate. El. Psy. Kongroo.

  2. Like I said in my intro thread, I bought this game recently, and I've just completed my second ending... and I wasn't really satisfied. I "accidentally" got the Safe Ending on my second playthrough, yeah. Thought I was heading for the Knife Ending, but I guess I messed something up. And due to that, I've now ruined the whole pacing of the story by finding out certain twists that would have been much more satisfying later on, not to mention getting that emotional scene with "Snake" very early too. Sigh. That's one of the complaints I have. I don't think you can accidentally stumble onto such an ending with Fate/Stay Night, IIRC. I don't know why the designers made it like this. It really ruins the experience. They should have kept it locked away like other visual novels. Another complaint is that some of the characters, when trying to escape a room with you, would give you certain hints about how certain devices or mechanism would be useful later on. It's such a fourth-wall breaking moment they might as well wink to the audience in the screen and say, "Remember this thing! It will become important when you find this other thing later on!" Talk about bad writing. There's no way Seven would have realized what A would be used for before I find B later on. Other than that, I want to say I would have enjoyed the story and characters were it not for the ruined pacing. I also accidentally spoiled myself about who the killer was beforehand, but that was a fault on my part. Oh well. Now that I've gotten the Safe Ending, I don't think there's much value in completing the other endings now though, and I might as well just head to the True Ending and get it over with. There should've been a label on the game that says, "FOLLOW A GAME GUIDE AND DO THE ENDINGS IN THE CORRECT ORDER, STUPID!" Also, regarding the characters... On my second playthrough, I tried to take a path that would allow me to get to know Clover much better, as she's almost absent the entire time before her "breakdown", rendering her an annoying whiner for the rest of the game. So I thought I would at least get to know her before the breakdown so that I could like her more and actually care for her fate. Buuuuut nope. Picking Door 4 or 5 doesn't matter because Clover gets separated either way, and by the time you come out and meet each other again later, the breakdown happens and she's turned to a boring shell of her former self. Great. There are other characters that I feel could've been written better as well, but let's leave that for another rant.
  3. Woo, most of these have "Lots of Choices" as tags; me like lots of choices in VNs. I'll check them out in the future. Right now, I've got one too many VNs on my hands to juggle with. haha Sci-Fi VNs are nice, but I actually like my stories my grounded and modernized (perhaps with a mix of sci-fi elements thrown in), like Fate/Stay Night and YMK. I've tried my hands on Ever17, but I had a hard time liking it, or staying engaged with its characters. Anyway, thanks for the welcome!
  4. I've "played" this title, and having the anime being one of my most fappable hentai of all time (or at least the first episode...), I have to say that the VN counterpart is rather tame in eroticism compared to the anime, probably because of a lack of animation. Not a lot of nukige (if any) can be like School Days with its cinematic cutscenes, after all, but I digress. The split content does bug me a little, but my favorite part of the anime, like I said, was the first episode, so I probably won't miss much. The story (story in a nukige lol) is decent, I guess, but what bothers me most is the choice of font MangaGamer used. As always, like the Taimanin Asagi games, they use that really crappy font, which tells me that either they don't have the technology to incorporate a better looking font, or they just don't give a f and this is merely another cheap hentai cash-in. Not surprising, since it's hentai, but still, I'm paying something here for the game, so I would expect some level of effort and giving a f. 6/10
  5. Agreed. It's a terrible shame not as many VNs incorporated this system into their storyline. I would have played the heck out of them otherwise, as I have School Days due to the numerous amount of nuanced/varied endings I got.
  6. I've tried my hands on Ever17; didn't like it for its length and overall dullness. Just started 999, and from what I've read about its "mind games" or whatever, I expect I won't like it much either. That being said... I do agree on Danganronpa's superficiality. Never have I seen a storyline as cartoonish and cliched as this, except maybe Guardians of the Galaxy, a movie which I didn't enjoy either due to the characters' equally cliched archetypes, but that's another topic for another thread. The whole motivation of "bring despair to the whole world" sounds so stupid too. After the first game's disappointing ending, I never got to finish Danganronpa 2 after around Chapter 3 or so, half-expecting it to get better. I can see why people like these characters, but it's just not to my taste. I found them incredibly uninteresting.
  7. Yeah, I know that it has its critics, but I'm one of those who like this kind of sappy stuff. After Story still got me crying from time to time.
  8. Often, yes, but not always. I do know certain titles that are either better or equivalent to the quality, especially Key VNs. For one reason or another, most of the older Key titles had been decent adaptations, specifically Clannad and the Kanon remake. Not so much Little Busters, but that's for another day.
  9. lol Too late for that. But seeing that it was a long time ago that I had watch the anime, I guess it wouldn't affect my judgement playing the VN. That aside, I definitely agree that the Corpse Party anime got butchered up pretty badly. From what I could remember of the S;G anime, at least that had some decent writing and a coherent pacing. I also preferred the anime OP as opposed to the VN one, as much as I love "Skyclad Observer". I feel that Skyclad Observer worked much better in the anime when it was inserted near the end of the series as opposed to as an opening. It was much more epic that way.
  10. Truth be told, I've only seen the anime once, and it wasn't even one of my favorites. After finding out that the game had multiple endings, however, I was intrigued by it and decided to buy it.
  11. Bought a bunch of visual novel-ish titles recently, so I thought I would look up a visual novel-ish forum to join and discuss the heck out of them, and here I am. The games I bought: - Zero Escape: The Nonary Games (trilogy bundle, with voice acting!) - Steins;Gate (Finally! This is the choice of the Steins;Gate... El psy kongroo) - Corpse Party on 3DS (sucks that its sequels haven't been adapted for the PC or 3DS yet) And that's it, for now. I guess this is the part of the introduction thread where I add a little related backstory about me... I've been playing reading visual novels on and off for half a decade. Because of their length, I've never really had a lot of time devoted to their completion, but I have succeeded a couple of times in the past, namely Key titles like Clannad and Little Busters. I prefer visual novels over kinetic novels as they have choices and thus felt more "interactive", but I've tried my hands on Higurashi and Umineko, and found their well-written stories satisfying enough to sit through entire walls of text without interacting with anything (haven't completed either titles, however). Aside from visual novels, I enjoy watching anime, watching movies, and play the occasional non-VN video games every now and then. I also like chicken, but it's easy to like chicken.
