LOL Yuma. Yuma is excellent and hilarious :D.
I'd also submit Shinonome Satsuki from Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate, but you have to finish the VN at least once before you can get to her route.

Yuma as heroine in To Heart 2 fits into that category, though the competition is all trivial slice of life stuff like gaming.

I think the time has come for me to play Umineko. I've been putting it off because it's long af and from what I've heard, a pretty dense read, and I'm lazy  Furthermore, I easily get obsessed over a mistery or challenge of some sort and yeah... I can waste all day thinking about it, so I'm pretty scared of what Umineko might do to me.
I only know the basic premise. The head of some rich family is going to kick the bucket and everyone gathers in an island to discuss over the inheritance, then they get killed   The setting looks like something out of Meitantei Conan. Oh, and I've also heard that:

Well, that's all, wish me luck

Well, I get to cross an item off my VN bucket list today - I finished off The Fruit of Grisaia. Just the Yumiko route, mind, but still, I'm really happy about it as it's one VN I've been wanting to read since having finished Katawa Shoujo, which means, in essence, about as long as I've been reading VNs. Unfortunately, though, I didn't really like it and I'm quite underwhelmed thus far (probably due to having overly high expectations). Part of that is probably because I wasn't actually all that interested in Yumiko (I stumbled onto her route by accident) and the other part is most likely because I found her route to be, well, underwhelming.
The Fruit of Grisaia Yumiko route spoilers
Things aren't all bad though - I really liked the SD art, and the common route sections were great too. I also like the music, and the extras portion of the VN is the best I've come across yet, with several options I've not seen before, like being able to choose specific scenes to replay. I really like the amount of options they packed in there.
I'm still hoping (and expecting) that the other routes will be better, and I'm going in terms of least interested to most interested, so will read the Makina route next, then Sachi, then Amane or Michiru (still undecided) before finishing with whichever route from the previous two I haven't read yet. It is entirely possible, though, that I might make a pit stop and read eden* before continuing onwards.

I mean, you're supposed to feel happy and relaxed at the places like that, and the story of Narcissu is just outright depressing. And the problems it raises are a lot more down-to-earth than in most similar VNs, and the story requires some serious thoughts to be understood, so I really just wasn't in the mood for something like that.
In my case, my brain just decided to cancel out all the sudden negative experience in favor of all the interesting things I saw in Greece, because I honestly feel like the whole story just went over my head. Actually, I'm not even sure 100% I really finished it back then, because I somehow really can't remember how exactly it ended. I just remember that
I guess, I just really need to reread it at some point.

Because it's a story that makes you want to grief for a little bit, and summer resort really isn't the place for that? Would at least be my guess. I would say the best way to enjoy it is reading it on a rainy autumn day with some time to spare for an evening walk to collect your feelings and thoughts after you're finished.

I finished Root Double and, well, my feelings on it are very mixed. The overall plot is incredibly complex and the writers manage to pull it off without leaving even the tiniest plot hole open. The way some new information makes you see previous events in a completely new light is impressive. The endings are satisfying (even the numerous bad ones). When it picks up the pace it's very engaging. But there are just too many things that annoyed me to really love it.
My main critique is that the storytelling lacks focus. Instead of focusing on the bigger picture it tries to explain every tiny detail. When a bigger twist happens you have to watch most of the scenes again that were impacted by it. When you learn that character X was actually working for organization Y the story doesn't just give you the information and a reason for why the character did it but you have to watch flashbacks about what their relationship to someone important to them was like, how that brought them into the mindset to work for Y, how they made contact to organization Y, and so on. Usually I'm a big fan of "show don't tell" but in Root Double the over-expositon sometimes really breaks the flow of the story imo. Especially since it's often implemented quite mechanically. A major part of chapter 4 is structured like this: Find person X -> short action scene -> flashback -> repeat for next person. At the point you go into the flashback you usually already know too much about the character to really be surprised by what happens. Additionally the story often shows you scenes several times, only from different perspectives that often don't add that much that it couldn't have been handled with less repetition.
All that being said, it's still pretty good (I rated it at 8/10 on vndb). I'm just frustrated because Root Double wasted too much of its potential to be really amazing.

For what it's worth, Yumiko's route was also my least favorite. I liked her character, but her route was for me, as you said, pretty uninteresting. My favorite routes were definitely Sachi's and Amane's. Without spoilers, Sachi is a big hit or miss and I ended up loving it  (it might be totally different for you though), while Amane's route is the most generally considered "solid route overall", and it's many people's favorite. Makina is also pretty interesting... as long as loli stuff doesn't weird you out  And as you've already experienced during the common route, her lines are gold, so you ain't getting bored. She was my first Grisaia heroine btw, being the order I followed Makina -> Sachi -> Amane -> Michiru -> Yumiko. It's often suggested as a starter route because it provides a little more insight into Yuuji's character, which is appreciated when it comes to understanding his interactions in the other routes down the line.
Michiru... I adore her, but her route doesn't harmonize at all with the rest. Really, if you feel like taking a break from Grisaia, reading Michiru's route can ironically have a similar effect

    Summary

Mihama Academy - on the surface, a closed learning environment established to nurture students who find themselves at odds with the world around them; in actuality, an orchard-cum-prison built to preserve fruit that has fallen too far from its tree.

Whatever the circumstances behind its establishment, Mihama Academy is at present home to five female students, all with their own reasons for "enrollment." For better or worse, each girl has established a routine obliging of her current situation; life moves at an idle, yet accommodating pace within the walls of Mihama.

Yet with the arrival of the institute's first male student, the nearly preposterously opaque Kazami Yuuji, the students at Mihama begin to fall out of step with their predetermined rhythms. Will Yuuji prove to be the element the girls around him needed to take hold of their lives once more, or will the weight of their pasts prove too steep a wall to overcome?

And in the first place, just who is Kazami Yuuji? While the true nature of the "job" he is wont to alight to at the most haphazard of moments remains shrouded in secrecy, one thing is for certain - his encroachment upon the quiet orchard known as Mihama Academy will prove itself momentous in one way or another. And of course, one cannot discount the possibility that perhaps Yuuji himself carries the weightiest past of any of the students...

Ending Guideline / Suggested Route Order
The game has a similar structure to G-Senjou no Maou in that its plot branches into a heroine's route at certain choices, although each of them is valid in its own as there's no true end. After entering a heroine's route the choices boil down to a single one for good/bad end.

Following the flow of the story and entering each route as soon as you encounter them would lead to the following order: Makina -> Amane -> Sachi -> Michiru -> Yumiko.

    That said,

That's definitely some really good advice. Since that's just how I go about any VN I didn't think about it earlier, but @snowbell55 please pay heed to his wise words; if you read 5mins of it a day eden* is worthless. It's a VN that relies heavily on the atmosphere to make an emotional connection, all the plot being just a shameless excuse for that.
It's funny how we both had a similar experience with Narcissu. I read it during a week of vacation while I was supposed to be enjoying myself. Not only that, but after Narcissu I didn't know better than start watching the anime Plastic Memories. By the end of it all I swear I felt physically ill.

Just a small piece of advice: read it only when you're free enough to finish the whole game in one or two days. These utsuge VNs work much better if you keep things fresh and don't have time to think about unnecessary stuff.
I'm saying it because I did the opposite and stretched the whole experience over something like two months, because at that time I just didn't have enough free time and mental energy to read VNs. Honestly, starting any VN, especially this one, during that part of my life was the second worst vn-related decision I ever did in my life, considering that, even though I understood that it was really good, I simply didn't enjoy it in the end. The worst decision was reading Narcissu at a summer resort.

Pretty accurate I would say. I believe for me it took even less time, around 5-6 hours, finishing it in just one night. However here https://howlongtobeat.com/game.php?id=25902 it says the average is around 11h, so what do I know

Eeee... I guess it's considered an utsuge, so yes, it's "depressing", but for me it's depressing in a good way, as weird as it may sound. Depressing but satisfying and heart-warming you could say maybe. Definitely not for you to read at the moment if you are no up for a feels trip though.

I'd say "a bit mean" is a fair assessment, but then again I do like the character in question, and said character (Sumiyoshi Chisato) is polarizing (partly because of her behavior, and partly because you're forced to read her route first, as it is important for later routes). If you want to try Koichoco and it looks like something you'd be interested then give it a shot - it's got quite a few positives to stand in contrast to the negatives.
To stick to the topic at hand, I try and give a VN a few hours and if I'm really not feeling it I move on. I've realized that some VNs do take time to get going, so it's not fair to judge them super early, but after that period (2-3 hours) if I'm not interested then I move on to another VN. The hard part is usually at the beginning though, but the same rule applies if it does start to get dull: stop and read something else. I just don't think it's worthwhile to try and force myself to enjoy something when there are other stories out there that likely don't need as much "forcing" for me to enjoy.

snowbell55 got a reaction from Karin in Are Console Versions Worth it?
I'd agree with Kiriririri but say that it depends on the VN. For some VNs you're not going to miss anything (Clannad PS4 for example) but for some you're probably going to be missing out (Grisaia Vita). Admittedly neither of those directly apply to your question, but it is worth noting that you'd be best off figuring out what your position on H-scenes is in general before deciding to read on those platforms.
Like Kiriririri said though, the library is going to be very limited (unless you understand Japanese), so (if possible) moving to PS4 or better yet PC will mean being access several (and a lot, respectively) more than what you would with the Switch and Vita. That said, advantages to reading on those platforms would be portability (making it easier to read while out and about if that's something that concerns you), trophies (for Vita that is), and also (though this depends on you) being a physically more comfortable experience than sitting and reading on a TV (via a console) or monitor (for PC). Also, this doesn't really apply to being more romance-focused, but there are quite a few VNs / otome titles that aren't on PC that you could read (Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and bad Apple Wars being but two examples).
For what it's worth, I've taken to preferring to read multiplatform VNs on console (PS4 that is) over PC if possible, because while I do like reading on PC, I also really like earning trophies and VNs are good for that. I also find that physical releases of a VN are more common on consoles so I can get them without breaking the bank, and I also am not as worried about H-scenes being there or not there.

I find that it looks (on the surface) similar to a lot of stuff I've read, but yet it keeps subverting my expectations, so I'm very interested to see how it winds up in the end. I like the background art, though, and the music isn't bad either. I also can't help but notice that I'm not exactly the biggest fan of Yuuji, but it's admittedly refreshing for him to be the way he is rather than the more generic "I've done loads of part time jobs" "superman" that Masaya and Takumi were from Princess Evangile and Noble Works respectively. So far though, the standout has to be Michiru who is, frankly, hilarious. They chose a GREAT VA for her, and whenever she starts whining, there's this kind of high pitched twing in her voice that makes her sound really frustrated. It's hilarious :D. And the things that Michiru does (and doesn't do) just wind up being so ridiculous and funny. I usually try and save my favorite heroine for last, and I'm having a hard time deciding whether or not I want that to be Michiru or Amane. It's strange - usually I wind up binging a VN (even ones I'm not super enthused for), and that hasn't happened here, but I'm still enjoying it a bunch. Depressed and now broke, Takumi wanders the streets and eventually bumps into someone... who looks exactly like him! Turns out this clone of his is Kanemoto Shuri who is from a rather wealthy family.   Due to very, very special circumstances involving Shuri's medical condition and constant harassment of kidnappers, Takumi is asked by the Kanemoto household to attend the prestigious Rokuroku Academy in Shuri's place. Initially only accepting due to his financial needs, Takumi slowly but surely finds himself enjoying his new life as the doppelganger of Shuri...

You like "ChiruChiru"s voice now? Wait till you read her route (especially her goofy, and downright CUTE laughs). Honestly, she's still my favorite VN girl ever

I would suggest you read through Chisato's route first though. There's a reason why hers was the 1st you had to read; she's a pivotal figure in all available routes and reading her story first gives context on her behaviour and involvement inside the other routes afterwards.
