Very interesting read. Our tastes seem to be similar so I'm hyped to start playing Nie No Machi asap since you recommend it! I hadn't got around to playing it since I didn't fully understand what concept they were going for so it gave me rapey vibes lol.

I wonder if you already played NG, Death Mark's sequel? I liked Death Mark (and Mashita is my fave too <3) but I was surprised to not see NG here since it improved everything that was clunky in Death Mark, imho. Death Mark had a tendency to just throw a bunch of characters at you and then take them away before you could properly bond with them (only Mashita was around for long enough), and this only improved with the extra Red Riding Hood case.

    If you haven't played NG yet, I really recommend it! It improved the faults in gameplay and placed a lot more focus on characterization, so you actually walk away attached to all of your friends instead of a select few. My favorite partners in Death Mark were Mashita and Yasuoka, which is why I'm a bit bummed out Yasuoka apparently won't make an appearance in the upcoming 3rd game ;;

(Recommendation for NG: the Super Scary mode is the one that has the same jumpscare formula as Death Mark, not default mode. I made the mistake of picking default, thinking it would be the Death Mark setting... Turns out NG's default has basically no jumpscares.)

Thanks for all your words! Indeed, I didn't play NG yet, I was really broke when it released so I decided to wait for a sale, in fact I bought it just yesterday so you now left me excited to see what's to come!!!

And I hope you enjoy Nie no Machi ^^ It does have some sensitive content here and there, sure, but some of them is text-only and the level of occurrence of them in the normal/true end routes is about the same as Dramatical Murder I guess (that's not true for the bad ends though, as NnM ones are worse than DMMD ones)

I never actually got very far into it but this thing from the writer of Shinimasu looks like it might be your kind of thing. I assume you will not get the patch that removes the gay (I still find it hilarious that that one exists) https://vndb.org/v9027

You assumed right! Gay and short VN couldn't be more me! Thanks, I'm wishlisting~ I could read Shinimasu too, but gonna wait until 2022 for the patch to support the crew.

Holy damn, a crappily-dubbed Engrish localisation? That's kind of amazing in its stupidity. Will have to look for some playthrough of that, but also happy the game received a second chance after being mistreated like that. :]

this person (not me) goes through one of the routes, I won't take responsability for any hearing damage.

although those videos don't go through the worst meme in the old translation.

it's just an ugly way to end the game

That's what made me even more pissed at that route. Like, it was such a beautiful journey, just why end like... this. I know it wouldn't work the same if it's not the last one but ughhhh

    Spoiler

Nevermind that I also loathe endings that tries to null the whole story, like I read all of that just for what

And I actually do agree with you about the sexual content, I rather enjoyed it, but I wasn't sure if it was really necessary or I was looking at it all soft because it is just the thing I like :nervous:  I know some people just aren't fan of sexual content in general so I just tried to point out that it's still a good title to get if that's the only thing that might make you pass on it :) the ending, well, I'll let everyone decide for themselves what to make of it.

I can't imagine it really disappointing anyone with love of android stories. But I'll be curious about your take on it. ^^

Well, I read it and quite enjoyed it! ^^

The story is pretty well written, creating a situation with a tough decision to be made and no obvious villain. Both heroes have their good and bad points and are likable characters overall (but I'm team Alto). Bonus points for the little MC customization (adds a personal touch to story) and the music that, while very simple,  fits the game really well and I love these kinda things where there are subtle changes to the track when the mood of the scenes shift. Another good point is that even if it's short, the story feels more or less complete, and not just a prologue to some bigger project.

My biggest complaint is not even something generally bad, just a stylistic choice that I particularly dislike: too many choices one after another, coupled with an affection points system. As I prefer to play without walkthroughs, figuring it out where something went wrong with this type of system is usually a nightmare (okay, this game in particular is pretty short so no real damage, but I kinda like when I see the results of what I picked before my next set of choices, I'm spoiled :wahaha: ), so I usually prefer less choices that activate some flags system or instant bad endings (I know the latter wouldn't really work here though).

So guess in the end is kind of a tie? www  Mnemonic Devices definitely have a better plot, development and conclusion, but I preferred Monochrome Blues art and choices (hey, we can give snarky responses to a bunch of 5 years old, what's not to love? :nokia:) But both dev groups have talent, cheers to them.

I'm not giving a score just yet though because I still have a few endings to catch on Mnemonic :wafuu:

Good to see you doing fine and not giving up on weeb, even if you can't always share it around here. ^^

Also, I'm so with you on Monochrome Blues (that twist could've gone better...) and Heart of the Woods. But speaking about NaNoRenO, have you tried Mnemonic Devices? It was my personal "winner" of the whole thing. :)

I'm actually baffled I could miss a game with Robot Protagonist tag :leecher:

You know what? I'll read it tomorrow and update this entry accordingly :sacchan:  Don't disappoint me here, man, I'm trusting your opinion that's good!!!!!

  7. What Ren'ai Arrow wrote makes a lot of sense to me. As someone that reads every h-scene because why not, I read what they give me, :nokia: I also agree that it can indeed mark as a relationship upgrade for the main couple, but still, I think it would be far far FAR more effective if they showed them hugging or cuddling then whispering sweet things then fade to black and showing them waking up close to each other. AND JUST THAT. The description of where the MC's dick is hitting have absolutely no purpose other than fap value. The quotes below are from my stash of bad h-scene quotes. It's supposedly from a important moment for the relationship between the MC and the heroine, but really, can you tell me with a straigth face that it's more than laughable bad filler and a disservice to the characters???

    Quote

"My towering rod is grotesque and menacing compared to the beauty of her body."
"Her stomach bulges a bit. Proof that I am now deep inside her."
"I quickly pull out of her spasming walls."
"My shaft pushes easily into her wet tunnel."

I think maaaaybe the only games that could be better with detailed descriptions are darker eroge, for shock and grotesque value, but even then people are mostly in for the fap :P

What if Tara Strong (voice of Barbara Gordon in the aforementioned film) was asked to similarly voiced a sex scene like that? Think about it. Think about the reactions of American voice actresses. "What is this? I didn't sign up for pornography."

Actually it's not that much different in Japan tbh

See, the thing with your quote is that it's Tara Strong. She's well know, of course she wouldn't do any random pornographic scene. Now back to Japan. Did you tried to look for eroge voice actresses? A lot of them go by alias and good luck if you happen to find a single pic of their faces (Of course there are exceptions, like Aoba Ringo). They mostly do eroge and eroge only. And actresses like Sakamoto Maaya and Kawasumi Ayako don't do eroge, except in all ages versions console ports. They're also more well know and they show their faces in events and such.

  9. Great review!

I used to read some chuuni shit (chuuniga? it was mostly manga and not games) years ago, but yeah the edgelord asshole of a MC that somehow still is the only man on Earth  that the heroines care about, just for them to go completely submissive and OOC in romantic/ecchi scenes regardless of how head strong they were before, was way too common and became annoying way too fast for me to even bother with this type of story anymore.

Okay, maybe I just had a poor finger to choose reading material, I admit it, but guess this VN will not be the one to make me go back to it. :P

Well, I wouldn't mind it too so there's at least two of us. :]

The art can look a bit mediocre when you just look at screenshots, but the expressions and variety in visual design make it much more enjoyable while actually reading the VN. I think it does a better job of communicating the story than some "objectively" prettier games and this is something I feel few people ever talk about. Good stylizati9n can make a huge difference, especially with limited resources. :)

    Make it 3 ;)

And I also super agree about the art bit. Something I love in those indie games is how stylish they can be. :wafuu:  And since it is a visual novel, visuals are important!! And Marco and Shira are nice in the visual department.

  11. I never really stop to actually look to the release dates, but I think the time period you mentioned it's the one the genre really grew a lot, started to look prettier in HD and started to deviate a little from the basic formula of dating sims. And if you look at it, it was right around the time the PSVita was released.

Older title tended to be either PC or PS2 games, like Kin'iro no Corda (2003). And the most popular ones, like Heart no Kuni no Alice (2007), later got ported to PSP. Maybe they grew along the mobile market? Otome fans surely love their mobiles, huh? So much that if you take only a tiny peak at google store you probably find several otome VNs and gachas. Hell, the Uta no Prince-sama VN (2010) and its sequels was never localized (because it's for the old dead PSP and it was never ported to Vita? No one would try to localize PS2 or PSP games in this day and age) but its gacha was (and it have a considerable fanbase of anime only secondaries, myself included, please don't judge >.<). And do you know Illusion's VR Kanojo? Yeah, they're planning an otome version VR Kareshi for mobiles only (at least for now).

Of course, you could argue that more games and mobile trash would lower the quality of the releases as a whole. As if. The competition seemed to got even fiercer. So much that QuinRose, an otome developer that made a lot of games during 2006~2010, suspended all business. And Rejet (of Diabolik Lovers fame) is not doing so well lately, after some generic gacha they tried to make failed. We may not look like it, but we're a picky bunch, we'll not buy any crap. :P Usually.

Outside of this range, we can't not speak about Hakuoki (2008). Probably part of the reason Otomate, that later made Code Realize, Collar x Malice and other great quality otome games, grew a looooooot.

And I do agree that VNDB is not exactly the best source to gauge popularity, because a) as Dreamysyu said the translated works are severely favored there because it's what is available to the majority; b) from what I see, the otome fandom is not as present or vocal as the galge one in VNDB. IIRC the JOPs really like Shinigami to Shoujo, and it DOES manage to have a good rate even on VNDB, so maybe our opinions aren't thaaat different (unlike say BL games, that most of the translated games have almost 2 points less in Japan).

And for an ending note, F*** me Royally looks terribad since it have absolutely nothing of what I like in otome games and I honestly think that it was made for a male audience to fap instead of a female one interested in 18+ games. But to each their own.

  12. In response to requests from millions of viewers, I added some names after some lines. Most of them were from either Dreamysyu or Virgin. But I'll leave this one as is:

    Nice to hear your extended thoughts on TnC, you should have warned me that you posted a review on discord though. ;_;

Awawawawawawawawa sooooorry I posted this while I was supposed to be studying so I kinda vanished shortly after

...And yeah Motomi and Rin have the better routes, though people seem to think they are the worst routes...

    Spoiler

WHY??????? THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT ACTUALLY USES IGURA FOR SOMETHING (at least for Rin) AND HAVE CONSENSUAL STUFF!!!! Erase them and you'll get a game with 99% rape!

Well, I'm ready to fight everyone if I have to!

Yep. It was a game that had everything going for it at the start, but fell apart quickly in every way possible.

And that's what made me even more sad. I tried to like it, seriously.

Also the compatibility issues extend to every Nitro title made earlier than (2008?). Blame their shitty engine.

N+C released a compatibility version for Lamento and Sweet Pool as well, but I don't hear many people complaining about those ones. Maybe it was shitty engine + something with this particular patch. (Sweet Pool's old patch also caused some save corrupting)

I think it sounds legitimately interesting especially since the organized crime world has to a fault been extremely masculine, and, chauvinistic, and explicitly homophobic. Might have to check it out based on that alone. Plus, I like some good mafia shit.

Was it ever translated? Oh and here

The translation is partial at the moment. 3 routes are fully translated (both subordinates and one neutral) and the 4th one (another neutral one) is at 90%. But the translator never found someone to insert the translation into the game in the form of a patch, so it was done with VNR user-submitted subs. I have the subtitle file, I can put it here with a guide like I did in the review of Sakuya later on.
