  1. Hey, I'm back.

Now I don't exactly know what type of VN I'm looking for but it's definitely not a tearjerker or a dark chuuni vn cause I had my fill of those. Just recommend me something good that won't bore me sleep. I'm reading Riddle Joker currently and it's.. okay? At least I'm entertained enough to not drop the vn midway. I would prefer untranslated vns from recent years if possible.

    Thank you in advance.

EDIT: Should add that I already plan to check out Yuzusoft's other games so no point in recommending those.

From what I've read so far, Chaos;Child has a lot of elements of detective work and is basically a giant mystery. I've been really enjoying it so far and I think you should try it out.

    Currently reading that.

Based in past Japan.  The protagonist is a Japanese magistrate in the Edo era.  For a bit of background, a magistrate during the Edo era served as investigator chief, prosecutor, jury, and judge all in one.  Because of this, magistrates in the later Edo era were often badly corrupt or obsessed with making examples rather than discovering the truth of an incident.  The protagonist is a strait-laced type though.

Butterfly Seeker would have been a recommendation for me, if the protagonist wasn't a (very limited) psychic.  It is one of the few mystery VNs I've honestly enjoyed.  The protagonist in this one is part of a school club of detective trainees, each with a peculiar talent (such as the main heroine's extreme empathy, another one's analytical abilities, or the last one's natural talent for subduing suspects).  He's got a sort of Hannibal Lector/Clarice dynamic going with an imprisoned killer that makes it more interesting, at least to me.

Same thing for Sakura no Mori Dreamers (both are based in cities with extremely high murder rates from serial killings), though Sakura no Mori is a lot more heavy on the fantasy crap.

    Ouka Sabaki added to list.

Planning to read Butterfly Seeker simultaneously with C;C. I wouldn't be bothered with some amount of psychic stuff as long as its a good detective story. Also this game having one of the best part of Silence of the lambs integrated in it is something I can't wait to read.

Already planned to read Sakura no Mori since I heard a lot about this game but just not now when I'm a bit fed up of fantasy stuff.

I know a couple of detective Visual Novels since its one of my favorites! :nico:

Although they are kinda old if that's alright with you, hope you like it!!! :mare:

    Eve: Bust Error

    Adam: The Double Factor

    Chain The Lost Foot Footprints

Hmm... I still have one to recommend however you say don't like science fiction and supernatural elements and a big no no correct?

Anyways here it is and never hurts to try....

    Divi Dead

Believe what you will, but the Supernaturals are very real...  Heck even Hitler was a satanist, he even practices divination. Crazy dude:makina:

And that's one of the reasons why he hated Jews...

As for science fiction, long time ago, Artificial Intelligence, Jet Pack, Robots were a work of fiction. Time has passed then these things are now in the present and is very real... Fiction is a clever way to tell a lie even though it isn't

Anyhow wish you all the best and hoping you'll widen your horizons, you'll be missing a lot if you disregard playing VNs/Games with science fiction or supernatural elements... Heck even a hardcore RTS gamer like me wants to take breaks from playing realistic WWII games such as Company Of Heroes, The Commandos Series, Men Of War, Sudden Strike. The list goes on :mare:

Those are some really old games. Heard about Eve and Divi and are already on my list. Added the others too.

I don't hate sci-fi and supernatural elements in a detective fiction. I think I have read more mystery vn with sci-fi/fantasy stuff than not. In fact, my favourite vn is Umineko which contains loads of supernatural elements. I'm just looking for something more grounded like G-senjou for a change of pace.

Have you played Cartagra or Kara No Shoujo yet?

If not then go for that.

Well I said I read almost all of the translated ones. Cartagra and Kara No Shoujo and its sequel I've already read.

So no Umineko for you? Well, ~if~ you change your mind about supernatural elements, go for Umineko no Naku Koro Ni.

As for games, I really can't remember any. What I can recommend is to read Agatha Christie, and you probably know why.

Already read Umineko. My best vn to date.

Also read most of Agatha Christie's work as I'm a big fan of whodunnit type novel not to mention she was the queen of detective fiction, still is.

That's one of rare genre in the VNs there, so the title itself is quite limited. As for the translated one maybe you can try Phoenix Wright, especially the Investigation spinoffs. While if you want to try untranslated one, perhaps you can try both of Caucasus and Pianissimo (Both from same developer as Kara no Shoujo). Also if you still didn't try that yet, you can try OELVN Lucid9. I hope my recommendations will be helpful to you.

Phoenix Wright is already on my list.

Sorry to say this but I'm not particularly a big fan of Innocent Grey. Cartagra and KnS left a bad taste for me constantly breaking my immersion cause of the characters and the convoluted plot lines. It's seems that for once, weird japanese shit doesn't mix well with detective story grounded in reality.

Lucid9 seems cool also it's an OELVN so that's a plus. Added to list.

If it really is such a rare genre then I guess I should abandon my hopes of finding another game like G-Senjou..

Thanks for the suggestions guys. If there's any more then please recommend by all means.

  4. Any worthwhile detective fiction? I've read almost all of the english translated ones so a recent or untranslated vn is what I'm looking for.

Also, things involving science fiction and supernatural elements is a big no-no for me. Something grounded in reality like G-senjou is what I want.

I'm currently reading Chaos;Child but since it's a sequel to Chaos;Head(which I do not have a fond memory of), I can already see myself whining and nitpicking at the end of the game and it too has sci-fi elements so there's that.

  5. I played Chrono Clock, will try Snow Sakura and I'm totally fine with bad endings as long as there is no drastic tonal shift.

oh this guy can have his swastika in the image but when i do it, it’s “racist” and i need to change it >:[

Funny thing is I didn't even notice the swastika in my profile pic until a moderator offhandedly mentioned me getting request for ban by various users. I just thought the picture was cute when uploading.

I don't think it's even possible for a VN to have lots of comedy aspects, without it being a moege.....

Correct. This is why I posted a thread here instead of searching in vndb since what I found there were mostly moeges and the most popular comedy vn is Fate/Stay Night...

But you can still recommend me moege if nothing else comes to mind.

speaking of comedy! theres comyu. it has a heavy tone but theres still a lot of funny moments. although it is pretty dark for the most part sadly. theres boob wars. cant go wrong with either version. you can play either one in any order since theyre not connected but i recommend 2. 2's one of my favs.

I played comyu. Boob wars sounds silly and fun. I'll try it.

Thanks for the suggestion guys keep em coming if possible.

  6. The problem I have with Isekai or even most fantasy anime is how everything is 'gamified' shall I say? You have lvls, drop items, dungeons, dragons, stats, slimes, healing potions, demon kings, these things are omnipresent even in anime/manga where the protag isn't trapped in a game. It's like they have a notion of what a fantasy world would be like(by playing rpg) but they never evolve their idea past that point and that just looks lazy to a spoiled consumer like me.

Also why does everything have to be with a european setting? I want to see the Japanese take on the fantasy world with Japanese culture just as we saw the Polish take on fantasy with Witcher 3. Instead we get the Japanese take on fantasy with their interpretation of european culture.

These things are aren't exactly bad per se they just feel stagnant and saturated at this point.

For that matter why does almost every fantasy story involves saving the world or saving humanity? Don't they have anything more interesting to tell other than 'The world is at peril' or 'Demon king at our gates'. Even games and movies are guilty of this. I have been on epic journeys countless times with countless set of companions that the formula doesn't feel epic anymore. Why not tell more personal stories in a fantasy setting? Why not about racism or political corruption or something as the main theme that feels original in a fantasy setting? Elfs and drawves in every fantasy setting. That's the pinnacle of our creativtiy?

Take influence from outside world as Tolkien did instead of just taking influence from other fantasy story in an already saturated genre...

Wow, I went on for quite a bit their and it mostly became about fantasy than Isekai at the end.. sorry about that.

I just want more writers to take a genuine 'Japanese' approach on Isekai/fantasy.

  7. Fell into depression reading/playing too much dark shit so I've been rethinking my plans. It has to be something that you yourself have personally enjoyed as a comedic VN. But I'd like to avoid moege(only if possible).

I finished Tsujidou which somehow turned into a slog through the middle.

Currently on Noraneko and I'm having a laugh which surprised me since I went in expecting this to be another chapter of my never ending battle with moeges. I can only hope it remains that way.

Majikoi, Little busters, just recommend me something you personally played.(also fine with recent and untranslated vns)

    Thank you in advance.

  8. Currently reading The War in the West by James Holland. Since I'm having trouble with how to describe this book, I'm just going to paste the description from amazon.

In Germany Ascendant, the first part of this ground-breaking new history, James Holland introduces the war, beginning with the lead-up to its outbreak in 1939 and taking us up to mid-1941 as the Nazis prepared to unleash Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia. To tell the real story, he weaves together the experiences of dozens of individuals, from civilians and soldiers, to sailors, pilots, leading military strategists, industrialists and heads of state, and uncovers the strategy, tactics and events that informed not only the military aspects of the war but also the economic, political, and social aspects too.

Those last bits of the line was what really piqued my interest on the book. A chance to deepen my understanding on the geopolitical and economical situation of Europe at that particular time frame was something I possibly couldn't pass upon and I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in WWII outside of what hollywood and documentaries teaches us.

  9. Hoi IV music all day for me! I generally prejudice myself over hearing catchy songs but in this case I found out that I really seem to like those german march songs. I suspect auto-loop played a big role in that while I was busy right clicking my units to waypoints.

  10. Recommend me something that can get you hooked pretty early on and maintain appropriate pacing later on and lacks meandering verbosity overall.

I'm fine with untranslated VNs being recommended(expect for Light's Kamiges and such which would prove too much for poor friend machine translation).

    Spoiler

I'm starting to notice a lot of VNs releasing nowadays indulge in intensive wordy narratives though I suspect this kind of stuff was always around from the beginning and I didn't bothered to notice them before. I was energetic and patient back when I first got into visual novels and everything in this niche market felt fresh and new to me. But now things feel pale and dull to me in this mean of entertainment saturated with it's own established conventions and cliches. And I lost my energy and am no longer as patient as I was before. Dropping novels halfway, putting on hold forever, taking six months to complete a VN. Furthermore these symptoms are worsened by excessive verbosity in the story. Makes me wonder if the concept of brevity even exist in VN literature.

To counter these problems I just resort to shamelessly skipping texts with Ctrl and later claiming to have 'read' the VN. I mostly skip uninteresting conversations between characters and overly extended narrations and bad obligatory H-scenes. This was the case with Da Capo III where I found myself skipping over most of the content just to find some 'important' or 'meaningful' sections scattered over the narrative and skipped the all of H-scenes. To be fair moege is not my cup of tea so I just can't blame the game entirely for bad writing in general.

    Anyways, I need recommendation.

Also long 'wordy' VNs are fine as long as there are less meaningless uninteresting sentences to not give me enough incentive to shamelessly skip text again.

    EDIT:

I'm so sorry, I should have clarified that it's not only moeges but almost every genres I come across in VN format that I feel are bad at getting to the point with few words and doesn't do much to serve the core plot.

Book novels tend to romanticise and exaggerate what could have been simple sentences to tricky and rather long ones to keep each paragraph fresh and interesting thus engaging the audience also they keep it kinda sort and relevant whereas in visual novels I think this kind of writing feels a little bit unnecessary since you have Visuals, Audios and whatever limited Interactability present to keep the audience engaged thus making the ever present verbosity in the narrative unjustifiable. This is by no means an attack on Japanese literature since I have very little understanding in that field, I just think there are many story tellers that don't know how to construct their narrative for the VN format in particular.

I have no idea what I'm talking about:  It might just be that the writing feels totally fine when reading in Japanese but feels a wordy mess when translated and reinterpreted in english due to the basic structure of the two languages being very different.

    TL;DR

I have this problem with all genres not just only moeges. Also narratives going off on a tangent I can bear but going off often like it's their golden week every time is too much.

  11. The kickstarter for Apocalypse Now - the Game launched personally approved by Coppola.

They are saying this is more of a survival horror than a military shooter game and goddamn I'm looking forward to it, albeit still remaining skeptical given my nature and me being a hardcore fan of the movie.

The outdated graphics and those film grains only enhance the game to give it more of a 60s-70s feel(yup, I'm using that excuse).
