Nier got a reaction from VirginSmasher in It's Official, Almost 1 Year After it's Release Subarashiki Hibi One of the Best VN Ever Made Didn't Sell
Obviously from looking at the amount of votes on vndb and the fact that the game is readily available for uhm... "free" everywhere, though what's available for "free" is an older build from September 2017 and Subarashiki Hibi got a few patches since then. As Doddler mentioned on his twitter in October 2017 with the release of Saku Saku, usually people that play pirated copies are stuck with v1.00 versions since that's only what floating around on the net and patches/updates are not distributed stand-alone.

It's a big change as far as Makura/KeroQ are concerned at least, this was their first attempt at releasing one of their VNs outside of Japan and for that they chose one of their most acclaimed VN, only to have it sell 2-3k in about a year (that's with including Kickstarter backers who got their steam digital download copies from there).

VN Fans: "Please Please, release Muramasa in english... What's that? No, I don't care that it's a 200 hours long title with no heroines, this game is EPIC and we'll definitly buy it if you release it!"
    *few years later*
VN Publisher: "Okay we have released Muramasa in english now, please go ahead and buy it"
VN Fans: *torrents Muramasa away and uses money to buy NEKOPARA 11 and Funbag Fantasy 5 instead*

    Oh wow, ha ha
I can't hide my disappointment with their latest announcement, neither am I able to understand the intent behind their decisions. This is no different from suddenly watering down a game that was always meant to be a pure eroge. It begs to ask what was the point in making an 18+ version at all. They create a game with animated hentai scenes featuring lolis but refuse to show a couple nipples or pantyshots? What is this sort of an hypocrisy? It's plain hilarious and I'm slowly losing all my respect I always had for Lose. This kind of thinking will also literally ruin their reputation, as you can't really influence and regain trust that easily, once you produced a lolige; you won't really make the mainstream crowd happy, while you're also slowly alienating your entire existing fanbase in the process. It's mindboggling.
At this point it's clear to state Sekai Project also blatantly lied about the version we'll be obtaining on the west. Since it was Lose reinforcing the decisions, this also places SP in a very uncomfortable position of being the sole party responsible for the entire mess, including complete lack of communication during whole localization and publishing process, as well as relaying appropriate information to both fans and people at Fakku. They will have a lot of explaining to do, not to mention this whole mess wouldn't even take place, if they would be more transparent right from the very start. Its this lack of transparency, communication and blatant lies on their behalf which led to this situation.

I think I said this somewhere earlier before, but... in fact, I never finished my reading of Miazora xD And that last sentence you said is precisely why I stopped reading it. I wanted a full, unaltered, uncensored VN, and it's what motivated me to begin this journey. Yeah, it's going slow because I am a terribly slow guy (and also might be a little bit of a perfectionist), but I am very motivated. I think that the help I managed to find so far is very good and I couldn't ask for more. It's more than I had hoped I would get by making this thread here on Fuwa. This might sound selfish and egoistic a bit, but my main motivation for this came because I wanted this patch the most. Yeah, others will definitively benefit out of this patch too (including the shitty Moenovel that might get its entire mess fixed) but my main reason for doing this was because I wanted it the most. So yeah, if I were in your shoes (and anyone else for that matter who feels the same way), I'd very likely feel the same way and wouldn't touch Miazora until a fanpatch for it came out

I wish it was at 90% That's definitely far away from the truth. Only 1/4 heroine H-scenes are translated and when I finish editing, the TL will move on. And I am not planning on giving up, thank you
Don't worry. I got more help than I expected I would, so all is fine
IMHHW took a lot of time, and this project will also take a lot of time too. That's why I keep telling people not to bother waiting. But if you want the ultimate experience, yeah, perhaps it'd be worth a wait

Please keep on doing what you're doing, the official patch is crap and we'll still not have parity with the japanese version.
This patch is the only hope to get the unaltered japanese version but with english text!

But that's literally what most japanese companies always did The modern successes behind certain titles in Japan are mostly because studios behind them actually learned good PR work, actively advertising their products to their respective, potential audiences.

Localizing kamige like Subahibi and Dies Irae is probably the most pointless thing you could do in this scene. They'll always get low sales and have the original companies back out of the West, plus they were only localized because people constantly asked for such VNs only for the majority to torrent the VN anyway.
I'm glad I started learning Japanese because the localization scene, while semi-thriving in certain VNs' sales, is only gonna get worse in terms of quality announcements since all the good VNs won't sell and companies won't invest their time and money into the West anymore.

Not enough to actually warrant all the effort that went into western localization. In terms of japanese sales numbers, that's far below average; if not for the fact KS literally funded the entire localization, it would be a flop. In other words, it pretty much became a one time thing with little to no actual revenue, lowering any chances for possible future releases. In all of this, I presume Sca-Ji is certainly more concerned he only managed to reach out to so very few people despite his best efforts, which is simply sad.

The repercussions are more than just lost money though, it will definitly affects the decisions to release other VN titles, at 2k-3k sales per title, do you think they will even think about bothering for that anymore when they can get XXk sales from Japan alone? For information Subarashiki Hibi was the winner in Best Story category of the 2010 Moe Game Awards, so back home in Japan it's not just any run-of-the-mil title.
It's so popular that it just got re-released in Japan this time with full voices, a whole new chapter, new character sprites and HD visuals.

Well, that's sad... I mean, i didn't play subahibi yet but sakuuta was fantastic...
It's a shame to see the work of a skilled writer like scaji sell less than little buster, which mostly everyone played with the fan translation back in the days.

How, oh how am I not surprised at all?
People aren't interested in great, thought-provoking stories. All they care about are animay boobs.
I actually doubt whether they are actually read at all. VNs on Steam are an entirely different beast, with both western and english-language versions of new games tailored specially towards your average Steam user, choke full of memes & silliness to warrant decent streaming potential... and gods forbid them for containing any sort of politically incorrect content. People are so surprised publishers nowadays rarely release large titles without crowdfunding help.
VNs were niche, are a niche and will forever remain a niche. You actually need a bit more than just a decently written story to garner any sort of success.
At this point, from a western developer's perspective, it's better to remain small and balance between funding, quality and creativity.

The worst thing is that when you release a game in english, you are basically releasing to a worldwide audience since english is (unlike japanese) an international language, imagine your work as a writter, director etc. being adulated when it releases in your own domestic market and then in contrast being basically ignored when it releases to everybody else a few years later, it's like sending the message saying "your work ain't worth paying for" or "your work ain't worth shit!".
In contrast Subarashiki Hibi just got released again in Japan a few days ago:

I didn't want to name these titles, but yeah, it's pretty known that chuuniges sell like shit. MangaGamer confirmed for all these that they sold poorly. So plot-centric titles rarely sell well. It's a great shame in my opinion. Titles that deserve more attention usually don't get any or barely any. Fata Morgana was praised by word of mouth so much and it still didn't sell that well apparently.

Subrashiki Hibi only sold about ~2k copies.
Also there was the confirmation from SCA-DI himself way back then:
Basically Subarashiki Hibi that came out on the 30th August 2017 sold ~4.5k copies less than the All-Ages version of Littler Busters which came out on the 1st November 2017, in any case if it's not obvious it should be mentioned that both are terrible sale numbers.
After this, I don't think that Makura are gonna be too eager to release in the West the definitive version of Subarashiki Hibi anytime soon, nor one of the other best VN ever made, Sakura no Uta.

Nier reacted to Narcosis in How can we make visual novels more popular in the west?
People have to finally understand high quality, story-focused vns aren't the main focus of publishers, because - ironically - they don't sell. Why? Because most people don't want to read. They want instant gratification, as to why they prefer light vns filled with either moe or porn (preferably both) over story-heavy games, which also take a lot of time to complete; time, they don't necessarily have, nor want to sacrifice on reading. No matter how hard we'll try, it's already not possible to revert this - vns fell into the same exact pitfall as in Japan. Publishing business is too risky for companies to strive for high quality releases, especially if they don't pay off. That's why we get a lot of cheap/mediocre licenses and good ones are a rarity. There's not much we can do, unless reading becomes a lot more popular once again.

Yes, they funded and published Iwaihime. DMM seems somewhat willing to work with western publishers. But yeah, maybe they'll pull a frontwing and decide to do their own stuff themselves from now on, on top of licensing from other companies in Japan. Who knows.
Witch Hunt worked with expressed permission from Ryukishi 07. I'm guessing they don't want to translate anything of his without permission, especially now that they've worked with MangaGamer on the official Umineko release. And R07 can't give permission for Iwaihime, indeed.

Hobibox is a huge corporation that has been actively trying to release stuff internationally for a very long time. See their parent producer: https://vndb.org/p1665
Many of their imprints have games released by english-language VN publishers. They are also a subsidiary of DMM, a big online adult entertainment group. It's worth noting that there's some misinformation going around stating that this is being self-published by the original Japanese developers/publishers. This is not the case. The original developer was Cube, a subsidiary of Cuffs, which from what I can tell has no formal relationship with DMM/Hobibox. What appears to have happened is an actual licensing arrangement where DMM/Hobibox licensed the rights to a chinese and english release from Cuffs, just like how a western VN publisher like MangaGamer would. So essentially, it's still the same setup of a third-party company licensing, translating, and releasing a game in another language, except that Cuff turned down offers from proper English companies in order to work with a Japanese company that has no idea what they're doing. Fun stuff.

Sorry for the late reply. You can get away with reading it in that order if you really wish, but it is not the ideal order. You will miss references to later rance games in the remakes. And also there will be a lot of waiting involved for the translations.
Rance 5D and 6 represents what is basically a fresh start for the series. It still feels like you're jumping into a well-established fiction but they do a decent job at getting new players into the world of Rance and rely on almost none of the previous games' stories.
Alicesoft made 01 and 03 in particular expecting a significant number of their players to have played 5-8 but not 1-4 since those are super old and dated. Basically, they expected their player base to be unfamiliar with the old games but still play each new game as it comes out, and wrote/designed them accordingly. (I'm not including 02 because that is largely the same as the original actually)
