Tay reacted to Down in Fuwa's state, a subective opinion.
First things first, my personal opinion (not as a staff member) is that I agree with most of what maefdomn said in his two posts.

Now to address a few things.

*The abandon of the fuwa projects: this was not due to "internal drama". We all agreed on the direction we wanted to take, but we couldn't. Because of legal issues and issues with people outside the forum. A lot of shit happened really fast, and somehow at the end Fuwanovel still existed and everything went back as it was before - with no advancement made and Tay no longer able to take care of his projects for various reasons. I won't disclose more, it's personal stuff and it's a thing of the past - not interesting to dwell on it.

Anyway, with the instigator of the projects unavailable and some motivation loss from the staff due to these events, things have stagnated. If there are people willing too, and with Tay being progressively back, there's no reason it will stay this way.

*Lack of moderation, spam, G&C: we discussed this internally too already. The Fuwa policy have always been minimal moderation. If some of you think it's not enough, we'll think about it, but I don't think there's that much spam out of G&C (we'll pass on mistakes like the Majikoi thread growing out of proportion), and G&C will probably stay the way it is. Again, I personally agree with Maefdomn and there's no reason silly fun and serious discussion can't coexist in the same forum if they are in separated sub-forums. I think the essence of the post is "we have fun, why don't we do more than just that and also make interesting projects and have more constructed discussions".

    QUICKSTART GUIDE

    Introduction to the Challenge

There's been a lot of talk about learning Japanese on the forums. I, myself, essentially found Fuwanovel through Aaeru's landmark blog post about learning Japanese (
link). For many, learning Japanese becomes a years-long (or lifelong) quest that is full of fresh starts, re-starts, and re-re-starts. Some make it all the way to the level of reading/writing/speaking (or a combination of those three), and some never do.

I'd like to propose a Fuwanovel group dedicated to learning as much Japanese as possible this year.

Here's what the group will look like:

Sign Up. People interested in taking the challenge will sign up - The "Founding Members" (aka, anybody interested in starting ASAP) will sign up by responding to this post. If there's enough support, we'll create our own little sub-forum with a dedicated sign-up page Strength in Community. Members will post progress updates at least once a week (more on this below) as to how they're doing. People who are struggling can request (or, if we like the idea, be given right off the bat) a "buddy" -- somebody dedicated to the program, or who is further along in the program than they are -- to regularly check in on them and give them encouragement. We'll all be encouraging each other in the forums along the way. Once we have a sub-forum, each person will have their own "topic".
Four Stages. There will be four stages in the program:
    1) The Kanji Stage
    2) The Kana Stage
    3) The Grammar Stage
    4) The Advanced Stage
Fuwa-Centric. All material necessary for success will be linked to/provided as we go. While we all have different learning styles, some tools are important for everybody to use. We'll link to lots of different resources to help us out on the way.

    * * * * * * * * *

    * * * * * * * * *

    The Four Stages

    The Kanji Stage

We will start by learning ~2200 Kanji (the
Jōyō kanji, or a list of kanji the Japanese government determined to be the most used and most important in regular life). This is the biggest hurdle for learning Japanese, but once it's over, the rest is MUCH easier (for two reasons: 1) you already have good study habits, and 2) Kanji are a huge psychological barrier).

The easiest way to study the Kanji is by using Dr. Hesig's Remembering the Kanji (RTK) method. This involves two resources: #1) Hesig's book (
amazon) (link) and a SRS-based memory program like Anki (program link) (RTK 6 recommended deck). I will be using the 6th Edition of his book, and recommend you do the same, as it has multiple corrections as well as new kanji.

    Kanji Stage Breakdown:

Members are encouraged to choose a study plan: Pick a number of new kanji a day, such as 10, 25, 50, etc. Ex: 25/Day - Done in three months! Ex: 50/Day - Done in less than two months! Using Anki on your computer/phone/tablet, you will study 25 NEW kanji a day per Hesig's study method (more on this below), and review old kanji based on SRS spacing technology Seems like a big hurdle, but it's not! Once you get going it's fun and quick

One important point about the Kanji stage (and, really, the other stages): you will continue to SRS the Kanji through the rest of the program (and, in fact, your life). The day you finish RTK1 you'll have tons of reviews (though you'll be used to the load/pacing). Those will start spreading out further and further, though, proving mastery.

    The Kana Stage

For those that have already studied the Kanji, whipping out these puppies is a snap. I got both alphabets down in about 3 hours. My big advantage: I've already got great study habits from learning the Kanji (plus, I've learned great strategies for memorizing Japanese symbols). For this program, however, we're going to be a little more conservative.

    Kana Stage Breakdown:

1 week of study One day devoted to Hiragana, one to Katakana Five days of practice (waaay more than you'll need, but just in case ) Mastery will come quickly, especially when we move on to grammar studies

    The Grammar Stage

This is where Japanese becomes very real and very fun. With our now-solid foundation of Kanji/Kana, we're now ready to move forward into learning how the language is structured. We will be using the AMAZING (and free!) grammar guide by Tae Kim. You can access the guide a number of ways:

On Tae Kim's website Via complete PDF version, compiled from the website A hardcopy version (my choice, which I'm very happy with) (Pic 1) (Pic 2) (Pic 3) On iOS devices via iTunes.

This grammar guide is AWESOME. You should plan to work through it at your own pace. I'm not to this step yet, so I'm not sure what's a reliable timeframe to suggest.

    The Advanced Stage

There's a lot to do once you've got this amazing super-foundation. I'll post resources for advanced students, but at a glance they include:

Reading VNs (for both enjoyment and vocab/practice) Watching Anime with subtitles Reading Manga Practicing vocab/grammar through "Sentences" and "Cloze Deletion" decks on Anki (more on this later) Farming sentences And more!
At this point you're ready to really start enjoying your Japanese skills. From what I've heard by many folks, reaching this stage generally takes 6-8 months for the power-learners, but still less than a year for those who are persistent.

    * * * * * * * * *

    * * * * * * * * *

The Roadblocks and Why We Need a Community

Research has shown that any large undertaking is likely to hit a barrier at a few different points in the process: after 3 days, after 1 week, after 2 weeks, after 3 weeks, after 4 weeks, and then ~once every three months after that. Hitting a barrier can come in different forms: discouragement, feeling overwhelmed, and -- very pertinent to our project -- getting so busy with other things a person "puts the project on hold for 'one or two days', and never returns."

One fantastic solution to this problem has been demonstrated by repeated clinical trials and observation: a phenomenon called "Community Recruitment". Community Recruitment means that a person tells a friend/spouse/child/or group of people about a goal, and then asks for encouragement and follow-up. They then have to regularly report their progress. By utilizing community recruitment, success rates DOUBLED in most trials.

So how are we going to use this in our program?

All members are asked to write up a progress report at LEAST weekly for the Kanji stage We ask a special report be written on day 3 about how it's going, as well as first impressions By doing a day 3 report, as well as weekly reports during the Kanji stage, the community can encourage each other through the toughest part of the trip Post-Kanji stage, we'll recommend monthly updates

Tay got a reaction from Izuru in Visual Novel's That Make You Cry?
They all make me cry, tbh.  It's actually much easier to list the VNs which didn't make me cry:  Snow Sakura and the vast majority of OELVNs I've played to date.

Games like Katawa Shoujo, Fate/Stay Night, Sharin no Kuni and Planetarian blew me away, and I pretty much bawled in each route. That's one of the reasons why I love VNs so much: somehow they squeeze their way into my heart and bring out all sorts of catharsis, feelings and memories which I don't often access.

So many memories with those games...

Tay got a reaction from Cyrillej1 in H-Scenes. Really necessary?
A Note Before Reading: I realize this isn't a topic to take lightly, but I'm interested in hearing other people's viewpoints on the subject. Historically they're a major part of the medium, and so I feel they're worthy of some discussion.
    *********

I'm not a fan of H-Scenes. I love VNs too much to give them up, but when *those* scenes come up I generally click through at high speeds, looking away kind of awkwardly. (Now, I realize that there are two types of H-Scenes: ones intended to be "tasteful", and others in games which are blatantly sex-oriented. All of my comments are directed to the former, as the latter are... well... they are what they are.)

Is it because I'm "afraid" of sex or sensuality? No way. I'm happily married and therefore have a healthy context to this stuff. Rather, I feel like H-scenes cheapen the VN experience. I understand that these scenes can represent a culmination of romance between two characters, but I don't understand why they have to be so graphic.

I feel like these scenes are included in VNs for the same reason they're included in most AAA movies: the obligate sex-appeal to be used for advertising.

That's the short version of my opinion, more or less. I'm interested in hearing what others think. Again, I realize this isn't the easiest topic to discuss, but I'm interested in sounding out.

Tay got a reaction from Tom in The Elusive FuwaCast (Podcast)
Hello Everybody,   Let's make a podcast.  Let's just... make it happen.  For science.  I say let's pick a day, get a few core people together (with whoever else can make it), record whatever happens at that point, and publish it for the world to enjoy.   Again, all in the name of science.     I'm posting this without talking to anybody, specifically, so already I'm off to a great start ; ).   First Recording: The weekend of February 21-23, 2014.   Featured Cast: TBD Topic: Top 3 VNs we played in 2013 (and why), Top 3 Anime shows we watched in 2013 (and why), Top 3 Video Games we played in 2013 (and why)     I think we need a few regulars to show up in each episode (not necessarily all the same people every time).  Batman said he was interested in participating the last time this was discussed.  Flutterz should make it so we can talk по-русски, shcboomer (I think) was once down with coming on, Lewy may be welcome (if he'll talk clearly and in English), Steve's always welcome, I've always wanted to hear Nosebleed's voice, etc. etc. etc.   If you'd like to participate in this episode, respond with a general idea of your availability (Fri, Sat, Sun - Feb 21-23).  All times must be in US EST time zone. (Why? Because it's the Bat-standard)     We've tried and failed at this so many times! Let's make it happen. Again -- please make a note if you can and want to try and participate.  If a lot of people are interested, we may have to invite others to come back in future weeks and not everybody will be able to participate this round.

This is a list of good games to begin your journey into playing VNs in Japanese.  Inevitably, most of these games will be moege, charage, or nakige.  There is little to be done about this, as chuuni, sci-fi, and fantasy-action VNs have linguistic barriers that will be too much for someone still struggling with reading conversational Japanese.  In particular, the biggest barrier for someone who is used to dealing with Japanese that is 'spoken', rather than 'written' is the existence of literary Japanese.  The turns of phrase, different wording, etc. that an inexperienced reader might run into can either be seen as a learning experience or as pure confusion, depending on your level and state of mind.  As such, I am only putting down games that are readable for someone who understands spoken Japanese but is weaker in literary Japanese.  I will also put a 'second level' for those who are interested in challenging themselves a little but not too much.  This one will be for those who are willing to see if they can handle the easier action scenes, more difficult event descriptions, and the like.

    First Level:

    Maji Suki Marginal Skip
    Suzunone Seven
    Kamikaze Explorer
Tsuisou no Augment (this game is hilarious, and it is not a moege.  I recommend this to people who liked the atmosphere of Yume Miru Kusuri)
Akabanzu - Real na Sekai de Boku ga Kimi ni Dekiru Koto (this game has only minor scientific terms and jargon, mostly related to AI and MMO's.  Since it is distinctly possible you ran into these terms just watching anime, I went ahead and put this up.)
Chuning Lover (this game is just generally rofl)
Ichiban Janakya Dame Desu Ka (one of the few almost-pure comedy in my personal lineup)
    Otomimi Infinity
Sakura Iro Quartet (this and the game above are for mimikko fetishists)
Ryuusei Kiseki (sci-fi moege, fairly easy.  Hardest parts are when the protag begins preaching about his hobby)
    Shiawase Kazoku-bu
Sukimazakura to Uso no Machi (surrealist fantasy moege... mildly funny, interesting in general)
Toppara - Zashikiwarashi no Hanashi (use this as your crash course in youkai)
    12/30/2014 edit
    Love Revenge
Real Imouto ga Iru Ooizumi-kun no Baai
    08/15/2016 Edit
    Sakigake Generation
    Minamijuujisei Renka
    Primal Hearts
    Primal Hearts 2
    World Election
    Koko Kara Natsu no Innocence

    Second Level:
Irotoridori no Sekai (yeah, it is being translated, but it isn't done yet)
Konata yori Kanata Made (relatively low-difficulty action/event scenes, as well as being an excellent entry point into the utsuge genre)
Tiny Dungeon series (relatively normal conversational and event scenes, and the actions scenes are relatively low-difficulty, if somewhat fast-paced)
Draculius (similar to above in the action)
Haruka ni Aogi, Uruwashi no (this game is probably one of the top three non-action/sci-fi/fantasy games I've played and it is harder than the games on the first level... but in exchange it is also a lot better, lol)
Hyper→Highspeed→Genius (relatively high difficulty to first level, but it is easier than the games I'd prefer to introduce people to, lol)
Koisuru Otome to Shugo no Tate - The Code Name is "Shield 9" (fanboys of fantranslations know this as one of the many dead projects)
    Ore no Tsure wa Hitodenashi
Kaminoyu (this one and the one above are your source for non-human love in this stage, lol)
Otome ga Tsumugu, Koi no Canvas (higher difficulty than first level primarily due to the art terms)
Aete Mushisuru, Kimi to no Mirai
Akatsuki no Goei (first one only, later ones are too hard for Second Level)
Re: birth Colony Lost Azurite (this, Tiny Dungeon, and Draculius are probably the hardest games on this list)
Fake Azure Arcology (direct link to the game above, and ditto)
Kimi to Boku to Eden no Ringo
Koiiro Soramoyou (famous for certain VN fanboys)
Kimi to Boku to no Kishi no HIbi (recent release, fairly easy, good protag)
Lunaris Filia (a vampire charage, for those who want some of that)
Naka no Hito nado Inai!! Tokyo Hero Project
    Dracu-riot
    Sakura Tale
Tojita Sekai no Tori Colony (this game is pretty hilarious, especially if you insist on seeing all of the loop ends before getting to the true end)
Tsuki ni Yorisou, Otome no Sahou (similar to Koi no Canvas, in that the terms that will give you the most trouble are the technical ones - this time for sewing and clothing design)
    12/30/2014 edit
Zannen na Oretachi no Seishun Jijou
    Kimi no Tonari de Koishiteiru
Sekai wo Sukuu Dake no Kantan na Shigoto
Nanairo Reincarnation (borderline within this if you are familiar with the base concepts of youkai and ghosts as understood by the Japanese)
    Sakigake Generation

Edit:  This will be the last in my series of lists.  I will edit them with additions occasionally, but I won't be making any new ones.  Have fun yall.

Tay reacted to Vokoca in Windows 8 64bit and VNs
    Hi guys,

I've recently run into an error while trying to run a visual novel on Win8 64bit, specifically:

"authentication failed unrecognized kernel32 module. / nm"

After a bit of digging, I've solved the issue - and I thought I'd share the solution, in case someone has the same problem. All you need to do is download the zip from the following website and extract the dll file into the folder with your visual novel executable. Worked like a charm for me.

I had this problem with the visual novel 失われた未来を求めて (Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete), though from what I've read, this can happen with My Girlfriend is the President as well, at the very least. Since there can be more cases like this, I thought I'd leave a topic here.

    Hope it helps!

Well today i present a New work i made..all i did was Cut out a Picture of Michiru from Grisaia and the rest is done by me..I added a lot of Abstract brushes, some sparkles and changed the color on most of them..Then i changed most of their opacity and added some "Level's" and a bit of Hue/Saturation change..After i saved it i redited it with some Filter gallery to add more of a Painted feel to it, Here is the finished.

Tay got a reaction from SieghartXx in Help out the OreImo PSP Project
    http://visualnovelaer.fuwanovel.net/

Hey everybody, Tay here.  Ziddy, the project lead over at Rinjinbu Translations (who also happens to be one of my favorite people in the VN world) needs our help!  Many of you probably know Ziddy through the efforts of his excellent youtube channel.
It sounds like the team working on the OreImo PSP game needs translators:

Rinjinbu Translations (Oreimo PSP) is currently looking for JP-EN Translators! To date, we have released 3 partial patches (Kuroneko, Kirino and Ayase) and we require more translators in order to continue our work from the first disc and beyond!
You will have to go through a translation test before we accept you! If you are able to prove your translation skills using existing translated material though, that’s accepted as well.
Please contact me (Ziddy) at #rinjinbu, irc.rizon.net or e-mail me directly at dizzyziddy at gmail dot com if you have any questions.
If you aren’t a translator, please help spread the word!
There are a lot of us looking forward to this game, and I hope that available translators will flock to this project and offer a helping hand.

If you’re interested in helping our friends at Rinjinbu, please contact them through theirrecruitment page on their website.  If you have questions, please contact Ziddy at #rinjinbu, irc.rizon.net or e-mail me directly at dizzyziddy at gmail dot com.  The fate of this project is in the hands of willing translators — please help out!

Tay got a reaction from Tom in [Submission] Badges and Username Color
Potocki posted this yesterday when -- as if he could tell, psychically -- I was finalizing the awards system.  Good on ya, brother!  Thank you for your understanding when I hid this topic and PM'd you.  I wanted the system to be a little bit of a surprise : ).

Regarding username color changes: I'm not opposed to flash, but keeping a uniform green color for usernames -- for me, and in my opinion -- maintains the spirit of equality.  If other members feel differently, I'll look forward to hearing their feedback here!

I'd like to congratulate Down -- he's been chosen as the first in a new tradition of highlighting fantastic members of our community each  month.

Down works tirelessly to make sure our walkthroughs are up to date.  He does a lot of the moderator work.  He's always polite, his comments are insightful, and I'm personally honored to call him a friend.

I'll be posting more information about Members of the Month in the future, but for now, please congratulate our friend, Down, for this achievement.  We're very, very thankful for all you do!

It’s been a rough ride for all of us.  Within what essentially boils down to a  48 hour time period, the site went down, was put back up, my plans for Fuwanovel were largely made impossible, our future stability was both questioned and potentially secured, new information rocked me about where we’re going as a community, and we lost two passionate staff members.  I don't like the language or rhetoric Naomi and Nayleen used above—and wouldn’t tolerate it in almost any other case—but I understand it.     It continues to frustrate, exasperate, and deeply bother me to see people treating each other so poorly.  I understand that the street runs both ways – I’m not claiming that Nayleen, Naomi, or any of us are innocent of perfect civility – but as adults and friends we have the obligation to respect each other.  There are a lot of us on Fuwanovel, and it’s probably impossible to like each and every other person, but there’s no excuse for personal attacks or abusive behavior.  That goes for everybody.  I've seen some of the rhetoric Naomi talked about -- up close and personal -- and all I can say is that we need to be better.  I've mediated hundreds of spats -- large and small -- throughout my time on Fuwanovel, and each one of them could have been prevented by a little respect and restraint.  Fuwanovel's best quality is its friendship.  We need to preserve that.  I’m not trying to legitimize the rhetoric of these posts – I’m trying to show the real cost and the extent of we stand to lose by abusing each other.  In regards to Naomi, as other members, I can verify that I've read dozens of logs where people said cruel things.  I don't blame her for wanting out -- it wears me down, too.   We need to be better.     I'll be enacting some reforms to help the community (both the staff and all members) address cases of rude and abusive members.  While I will continue to ask the staff to be examples of respect and civility for the forums, I recognize the need to protect them and everybody else. If I haven't done a good enough job to this point, I apologize. Let’s remember that civility doesn't mean mindless agreement, it means respect as a human right.  The goal is not to control speech, it's to ensure respect in our dialog and interactions.     In any case, this thread has been derailed.  As a collective Fuwanovel would like to thank Nayleen and Naomi for all of their help over all the months they've been with us.  Fuwanovel has been wildly improved thanks to the time and skill you brought to the table.

Tay got a reaction from Sieg in Fuwapocalypse 3.0
And thus passed another exciting – albeit brief – Fuwapocalypse.  You may or may not have noticed that Fuwanovel was taken down today, but that’s exactly what happened.  We ran up against more hosting issues, and thus have chosen to change hosts.  I think this change will bring a lot of stability to the site.        Feel free to post any thoughts/questions you have.  I hope you’ll agree that it’s good to be back online! - Tay

Tay reacted to Nosebleed in Fuwanovel VN Inventory 2.0
So i saw this post from Tay back in 2012 and I figured since it wasn't updated in over a year I might as well make an updated version.

So here is a pdf I made with every single VN on Fuwa to date listed in alphabetical order (click the image):

Anyone can download it. Every title is linked to the respective Fuwanovel download page as well.
I'll update it whenever a new VN is uploaded.

If anyone wants to print a physical copy i advice you to get the plain text version of this pdf
Unless you're okay with using a ton of ink to print the original.

It's not that big of a deal but i thought it'd be a nice little project to occupy my free time.
If you see any mistake or just have any opinion about it in general feel free to say it

Tay reacted to Clephas in Clephas VN of the Year, 2013
Though this year did have a few kamige ('kami' being god and 'ge' being 'game'), including Hapymaher, Komorebi no Nostalgica, and Natsu no Owari no Nirvana, I carefully considered over the past few weeks, as I finished the last of December's interesting releases, which I would pick.  I also briefly considered Madou Koukaku as a candidate, but concluded that it did not match any of the other three in story quality, though it has excellent gameplay.  That all three candidates came out in the first quarter of the year might say something terrible about the VN industry in general, but the fact is that most years, we are lucky to get just one or two games worthy of entering into the annals of legend (otherwise known as my favorites list, lol).  Having three worthy of consideration, all coming out around the same time, is not a negative thing.

Komorebi no Nostalgica, which I introduced to several people who were interested in science fiction but wanted something that more seriously approaches the concept of an AI, in a number of ways, is an excellent game overall, with a truly great cast of characters.  This game had few noticeable flaws, and I'm still engaged with the characters emotionally, even nine months later.  As such, there was never any doubt it would be a candidate.

Hapymaher is the new game that made me cry the most this year.  That might seem like a dubious recommendation, coming from me, but it is rare for me to actually break down and cry just in the course of a game, rather than only at the climax.  I cried through about one third of this game, and it easily has the best soundtrack I've seen in a non-Propeller game in three years.  More importantly, it uses all those soundtracks effectively to enhance its somewhat whacked-out story and makes it feel alive using the old-fashioned methodology that used to make jrpg stories so beloved.  The story itself is fairly weird, something of a mindfuck for people not used to this kind of thing.  However, this doesn't detract in any way from the reader's enjoyment.  If the game has a flaw, it is that some people won't be able to bring themselves to like the protag and others will find the Alice in Wonderland themes (there is definite influence) irritating.  I didn't, despite hating that book, but I know some people can't even stand references to it.

Natsu no Owari no Nirvana was one of two great utsuge produced this year.  It has a somewhat odd story, where the protagonist (the son of Enma, the Japanese-Buddhist Judge of the Dead) has to cleanse and judge the souls of three sinners.  The story overall is fairly sad, and the true ending will have even the most stoic feeling at least a little down.  This is contrasted with the protagonist's rather hilarious antics (he is something of a layabout) and the goddess Kannon's rather... interesting treatment of him.

In the end, however, it came down to the first two, Komorebi and Hapymaher.  Nirvana sometimes hits too light a note for an utsuge, and while it is an immensely enjoyable VN, both Hapymaher and Komorebi are on a different level entirely.  At that point, I had a choice between a game that had made me think, as well as laugh and cry (Komorebi), and a game that had engaged my emotions on a number of levels (Hapymaher), leaving me to make a rather hard choice.  It could have gone either way.  I'd decided on one or the other a half dozen times in the last two weeks, and I almost posted the result for that momentary decision any number of times.

However, in the end, I decided that Hapymaher was the only possible choice.  It is a game that meets the highest standards on every level, but more than anything else, its music takes it to levels Komorebi couldn't achieve with the story and characters alone.  So, officially, Clephas' VN of the Year for 2013 is Hapymaher, by Purple Software.
