Hello y’all! Ezeefreak from the Recognition Team is here this time. Today we’ll highlight another one of our precious members. If you’re able to read a VN in Japanese or even in ordinary English, then the probability is really high (near 100 %) that the member, we are introducing to you, already read that one you’re reading now or plan to read. Maybe you even found it on his suggestion, in one of his fabulous reviews or on a list he made. Well, I think y’all figured it already out that we talking about Clephas.

Clephas is real pro and expert when it comes to VN’s. He has read more than 500 (in words FIVEHUNDRED) VNs by now. So he knows a lot about this media and also shares his knowledge with us. If you ask for a recommendation he is always one of the first who contribute. If you want to read something about a VN it is mostly enough to search for a review from him. In his VN of the month topic he shows us all different kinds of VNs, some that the most of us never even heard about. Also he is one of our most active bloggers on the site and showers us with incredibly detailed and interesting posts there. He is also a Moderator of the FuwaChat and probably already ate the most of the people from there.

Well, let me show you a little overview over all the awesome work he does on Fuwanovel:

    - Clephas' VN of the month
    - There are also lot of other informative posts like VN Companies, their nature and habits or Why Japanese is easier to learn than you think
    - Clephas made a lot of helpful Lists and recommendations, see yourselff here, here, here , ... and so on It would really take to long to liste every single one .
    - A must see for every lover of VN's is definitely his blog.

He contributed a lot to this community and like I said at the beginning, is a real expert when it comes to VNs. It would be too much to list every helpful and excellent post here.

We from the RecTeam, the Staff of Fuwa and all the other people of Fuwa thank him for the work he does and hope the he will us show more from the world of VNs in the future.

    Thank you!

Hey Fuwans! Lino here again bringing some more fabulous happenings around Fuwa proper. This post is going to be a tad beefier than normal, so bare with me here. In this case, it isn't as much a 'happening' is a thing that persistently exists. So without further ado, we'll be taking a look at the Fuwa-Skype Group and its offshoot; Fuwa-Skype Karaoke.

For those of you who don't know, Fuwa actually has its own skype group, the Fuwa-Skype Group (F.S.G). It's one of the places where a bunch of members here often frequent and give each other raburabu hangout outside of the forum. You can check out the thread dedicated to joining it over here. If the idea of getting into that is off-putting, perhaps take a look through the "unforgettable skype quotes" thread. We are also housing the next Nasu (a la Fate series and Tsukihime), so that right there is all the more reason to check it out.

Aside from that, as mentioned in the first part of this post, there is also an offshoot group of F.S.G; Fuwa-Skype Karaoke (F.S.K). As the name suggests, members get together and jam out and sing together every Saturday. It has been going on for a while now and everyone who ends up participating enjoys it a lot.

So we, the Recognition Team, have asked a few members of the Skype groups for a bit of their time for interviews, and they oh so kindly obliged. We would very much like to thank Kurisu-Chan, arakura, Jptje, and Joris914 for taking the time to deal with our questions and letting us interview them. Half of the interviews are in text form while the other two are available for your listening pleasure. Enjoy!

    Interviews:

    arakura (interviewed by Ezeefreak)

    Kurisu-Chan (interviewed by your's truly)

    Jptje (interviewed by Rose)

Tay reacted to Clephas for a blog entry, Random VN: Bunny Black
Bunny Black is a VN and dungeon crawler by SofthouseChara, a company known for complex and well-designed game systems based in fantasy worlds.

Bunny Black is one of their earlier games, and it is a lot more focused on the actual gameplay than the story. However, the gameplay is actually quite well-designed, with the ability to purchase monsters to serve as the other members of your party, the ability to choose how you will advance Darcs (the protagonist), and a mission system reminiscent of many other games of the type, where you go to the bar/item shop and take on missions to advance yourself in rank, explore the dungeons, and obtain items and money. To be honest, this game requires a ton of grinding for the early part of the game, both to obtain the rank necessary to use more powerful monsters and the levels necessary to survive battles. However, once you reach around level 35-40, and have a solid party, you can enter the dungeon known as the 'Gate to the Demon World', a dungeon that has rest spots and high-experience enemies to allow you to power level your party to whatever level you want them to be. At that point, it is possible to get up to level 70 in a matter of about four to six hours, if you hunt efficiently (if you were smart enough to get the skill that increases gained experience). That will let you complete the game, with ease.

A more problematic aspect is the story... what there is of it. To be blunt, this game's 'story' is almost all about the gameplay and the ridiculous number of H-scenes (about 70% of them about raping adventurers and other female enemies) included. The funny thing is that the supposed primary heroine, the Maou, is the flattest character in the game, up until the end. Sad... that they didn't manage to inject the same level of storytelling quality seen in Ouzoku.

A few pieces of advice: This is not a game to be taken on lightly... be prepared to die a lot at first, as you get used to the gameplay. Also, this game consumes an immense amount of time, (fifty-five hours total for me) meaning you probably will not be able to finish it with even reasonable quickness. There are very few decent healer monsters, so you'll probably end up having to use Darcs that way, by accessing the healing skills (he can use them all, if you use his skill points that way). Moreover, since he is the most over-powered ally in the game, you'll probably end up using him as a frontline fighter as well (he absorbs damage way too well). I'd suggest you get the first level of the treasure-box opening skill and the identification skills, as not having these will be a huge drain on your funds otherwise. My final party formation had four sorcerer monsters, two long-range monsters, and two frontline heavy-hitters... Most of your party for most of the game is going to be made up of sorcerers or front-liners, because of the number of early enemies you'll barely be able to damage with regular attacks. Sadly, if you try to go the other way, you'll probably never get anywhere.

Tay reacted to Darklord Rooke for a blog entry, Sakura Spirit Writing Critique - An Introduction
For those that don’t know, the other day some villains ambushed me and they gave me a task – to produce a writing critique of Sakura Spirit. This, they say, will entertain the masses and provide much mirth for those on Fuwa. It is a task I went into full of hubris.

But first some background. Sakura Spirit is an English developed Visual Novel with extroadinarily pretty art, and yet it suffers from a horrible reputation. A reputation even more repulsive than those terribly translated, doujin, nukige abominations Mangagamer spews forth. The mere mention of this title produces hisses and insults from nearby people, reactions you’d usually only hear if you gatecrashed a teenagers party. Dressed in only a bathrobe and slippers. Shouting that it was past your child’s bed-time, you were here to collect them, and had anybody seen them?

There’s very few people or institutions that could release something so aesthetically beautiful only to produce such disgust in the public, and my money’s on the Government.

And so I went into this challenge supremely confident, reassured by the knowledge that the Government has never done anything right. I would be gifted a game that was completely horrid, and I would need to apply only a minisule amount of brainpower to produce a detailed critique. How misplaced a feeling this was!

But onto specifics, why the uproar over such a beautiful looking game? Well, there’s 4 reasons: there’s no plot, it’s a game about sex but there is none, it’s an English developed visual novel with Japanese words and phrases sprinkled everywhere, and the writing is horrid. So the only positives to the game are the pretty art, and the fanservice.

But surely gamers are a smart species, they wouldn't fork over good money just because of some large, oil-smeared boobs, am I right? That would be like watching NASCAR for the crashes, or watching a foreign film to laugh at the funny mistranslations in the subtitles.

But I was wrong. Over 100,000 people own Sakura Spirit, and that’s more than the entire voting population of Aruba. And most of them appear to have thoroughly enjoyed themselves, if the review system on Steam can be taken at face value.

    Which it can’t.

But here’s the thing, if a small indie studio can sell over a hundred thousand copies just by including some nice art, and sprites with reflecting boobs, then there’s no incentive to provide a decent story or good writing. Writing takes time, and good writing even more so, and if there's little monetary reward to head down that path then people won’t.

But unlike Winged Cloud, Sekai Project is a production studio and DO have a professional reputation to maintain. In response to the uproar they made some apologetic sounds and issued some vague promises on Reddit. They said they asked Winged Cloud to “improve the grammar and writing” and have since “changed their QA procedure”. But despite their revamped QA procedure the situation repeated itself with Nekopara, another awfully pretty game that was obviously translated by the Government. This didn’t bode well for their first promise.

So over the next few weeks (Fuwa time) I will analyse the game’s writing to find out how much it has improved, and what writing issues are still included in the script. Obviously they wouldn't have been able to shoe-horn in a plot, or much additional character development, but what have they improved and how bad is the writing in its current form? Is Sakura Spirit finally worth purchasing or is it still nothing more than a glorified erotic CG gallery… with no actual porn?

    That’s what we’ll find out.

I've been into VNs since around 2002, and active in the community since about 2004. I go by various pseudonyms including sanahtlig, Dark_Shiki, and magusgs. Boards I actively follow include Mangagamer, JAST, Fuwanovel, and VNDB. I was also formerly active at NIS America. I've been actively following VN localization for over 10 years, so I've become familiar with business aspects of the market that often elude other fans.
Over the years I gradually became interested in playing games outside the walled garden of English releases. I enrolled in a year of Japanese courses in 2005 and casually studied the language. I used text hookers to machine translate Japanese VNs, especially RPGs and other gameplay-centric titles. In the past few years I've gradually shifted to using dictionary lookup more often as my knowledge of the language improves and machine translation becomes less attractive as a crutch. Today I remain reliant on text hooking, and I use machine translation as a grammar reference (or when I'm feeling particularly lazy), but my Japanese is good enough that I can often understand written dialogue unaided. With all the tools at my disposal, I'm fairly confident my overall comprehension approaches native level for the games I typically play, even if my reading speed is a bit slower and I don't necessarily understand every word or every phrase.

I play VNs voraciously, though I go through spells where I play 30+ hrs a week, and other times where I'll go months without playing any. These days I mostly play Japanese-language VNs, though I try to sprinkle English VNs in (with auto-mode enabled) to give my hands a rest from scrolling over unfamiliar Japanese phrases and repetitive clicking. I keep my VNDB profile mostly up to date. My focus is eroge with gameplay; I consider myself nearly an expert on this genre and I've played games from most of the major developers. I play eroge almost exclusively because, well, I like my animu ero, even if it's just a scene or two tacked on at the end. I usually shy away from nukige, which tend to bore me, but I play a few. To this day I've completely spurned original English VNs for several reasons: the low production values / severe lack of professional quality releases, lack of Japanese voice acting, lack of ero, and a general disdain for Western cultural and artistic values which often creep in (especially into the ero, if any). I might be persuaded to try one eventually if some or all of those concerns are addressed.

I like to argue and debate, and my forum post history is filled with posts on all sorts of topics including the VN industry, VN piracy, censorship, legal issues and obscenity, and much more. I also post on Fuwanovel's Fuwazette as well as my own personal blog. My tone is often callous but I typically attempt to argue concepts and ideas, not people. My view is that ideas exist to be challenged, and unchallenged ideas lead to complacence and zombie-think: simply echoing what others tell you. Wherever I see complete acceptance of an idea, I see a viewpoint not being considered. True objectivity means openness to new ideas, an ability to see controversies from multiple perspectives and understand how different premises and viewpoints can lead to different conclusions. I pursue truth, and where truth is elusive I seek to approach it through the sum of all valid viewpoints. Even viewpoints that don't hold up to scrutiny often provide a valid insight into the minds of men.
I write fiction occasionally. My current project is Memory's Wounds.
I am sanahtlig, and this is my story.

Tay reacted to Rose for a blog entry, OriginalRen - CPPE
Hello everyone! Rose here, bringing you guys a bigger post than usual to give some proper recognition to an amazing member of our community. If you've already seen the beautiful gentleman to the left (Click on the picture to enlarge it), chances are that you've also used or at least saw someone using an avatar/signature with that face on the forums. If not, then let me introduce him to you. OriginalRen is our highlighted member today, he's a member of the Leadership Council, a VN delivery boy, creator, producer, performer and entertainer. He not only works hard as part of the staff, but he's also an amazingly generous person who hosts a lot of giveaways, as well as the host of many entertaining activities and cool projects around the forums.

Listed below are some of his finest works. From official Fuwa projects to personal ones, all of them are ultimately focused toward making this a better and more enjoyable place for everyone.
OriginalRen's VN Mail Call!/Fuwanovel Mail Call!/OriginalRen's VN Ordering Service (The inconsistency is real with this project's name) - Have you ever wanted a physical copy of your favorite VN but never got it due to high prices? Then how about getting them straight from Japan and by paying no more than what you would for a console game in the US? Ren offers himself as a delivery boy and will ship you figures, vns or general goods you might wish for reasonable prices. He also recently made a small list informing some cheap deals you can get.
Tutorial: How to Run a Pulltop Game - For whatever reason, Pulltop games require you not only to change your unicode settings to Japanese in order to play them. As a more experienced person with the company, he made a quick guide explaining how to Run them.
Fuwanovel's Contribution/Participation Recognition System (AKA: CPR) - Together with Nosebleed, Ren is responsible for making and handing out award badges to the community. You can check their amazing work right here.
Let's Play a Visual Novel! - This guy loves his stream, not only he plays random games but he also streams untranslated VNs with friends from time to time, so if you're interested in any of those, go watch him stream or check his VODs if it's a complete/postponed VN.
Giveaways and games - Did I already mentioned that this guy hosts a lot of giveaways? Well, while some of them are spontaneous, most of them require you to take part in an activity of some sort. Together with his generosity, he always finds ways to entertain the community by making forum games with great prizes for the winner(s).
Fuwacast - The official Fuwa podcast and its many series are all hosted by this guy as well. Among them, there are discussions about some VNs, community introductions and a lot more.

For all that and a lot more, we can only thank Ren for being all he is to Fuwa. And to end this post, let's have a word from our admin, Tay. (As a friendly easter egg and advice, a bit less of salt would do you good <3)

There really isn't any way to adequately recognize all that Ren's done for Fuwanovel. All I can say is you've got a gift, Ren. You've done some amazing things and made this a really fun place to hang out. I feel lucky to be friends, and Fuwanovel is lucky to have you here. - Tay

    Into the Fray!

    First Foray into Untranslated VNs

Man does that title make this seem important. Hate to disappoint, but it is not important at all.

So recently I decided it would be a good idea to finally stop procrastinating on something I have been really meaning to do. I finally got off my butt and got my hands on Akatsuki no Goei and installed it on my computer. With my current Japanese level, I felt it would be a good one to try and work my way through. Not too difficult and not too easy.

I just felt like a moege wouldn't really help me as much as trying to struggle my way through something with a higher level of linguistic complexity. That kinda makes it seem like I am talking about the difference between a moege and things done by the developers Light, but believe me, I make no such mistakes. I am no pleb...

... I just really wanted to say the word pleb. Its like.. my favorite 'word' right now.

I have enjoyed it thus far, that is for sure. Kaito is a freaking AWESOME protagonist. I love him, in the manly not homosexual way.

I think I have spent a total of ten hours reading, but I would be really surprised if I made it even an hour in as far as 100% fluent in Japanese person is concerned. However, I have definitely felt my vocab improving, even if it has only been three days. I have picked up a few new words and phrases, which made me pretty happy.

    Incoming Digression:

So yeah, its pretty good. Maybe I will do day by day entries about my experiences with it. You can see in post time how bad my Japanese failings are. We'll see how I feel after today's playthrough.

Tay reacted to arakura for a blog entry, Changing is Hard
Last week I read It's A Hard Life. Three years ago I read Katawa Shoujo. And here I sit, writing, having finished neither of them. I bring this up because it says something about me that might not be immediately obvious and I wonder if maybe this actually matters. I think I'm in dire need of some accountability and of some understanding of what I'm really doing with myself.

So, the first thing to do is to take a step back and think about why I haven't finished half of my favorite stories. From the Dune series to Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou to Hakomari and more, I've struggled for years to actually finish the stories I love the most. It's kind of a weird problem, as far as I can tell. I haven't run into anyone with quite the same issue. Let's begin.

Do you know that moment? That moment when something is so good that you cannot stand it being ruined; When you tell your family to be quiet or turn off your phone so that nothing distracts you from something truly amazing. That moment when you decide that crunching on some chips does the mood a disservice and seriously focus in on what may just be the best thing you've read in the last two years. Or ever. It's that moment when I tell myself that the time isn't right. The mood needs improvement and I'm a little tired so tomorrow when I'm feeling utterly perfect is when I will return to this amazing experience. It's that moment, when I become aware of everything around me, that it all goes downhill. Because the perfect moment rarely arrives.
So why not, as others have offered, just screw the mood and jump into it? It just always feels wrong. It's like having trouble trust falling. I'm afraid that if I take the chance and screw the mood, take the fall, and trust in the strength of the story I have chosen that I'll end up in in pieces on the floor. It's pretty dramatic, I know, but the dangers aren't skin-deep.

A professor of mine once said, "identity is about the creation of meaning." And I really believe that. I've always told myself that these stories mean something. That they matter to me because they are somehow important, even if it isn't exactly clear how. These days I tie my very identity to their impact on me as a person and my development. They hold a place in my heart that I don't think it's exactly normal for stories to hold, but I'm quite happy that they are there anyway.

That's really what it comes down to. I'm afraid that if I'm distracted or something is wrong with my mentality or what-have-you that I'll no longer feel the way I did earlier. How horrible it would be if one day I pick up the third Dune book to realize that it's not actually as good as I imagined it would be. If I were to rewatch Guilty Crown and find a plot hole I would be crushed. Something more than a story will have changed. Something about me will be different. Something I don't want to be different. It's because somewhere in the world of me I put value in these stories and they sit there in their pretty glass cases in my mind. I look at them and think to myself 'how pretty that was' or 'how much you matter to me'. I am afraid that one day I will look at something once beloved and no longer will that passion burn. And then I will be left with nothing (well... not nothing). So I stop reading Dune, afraid that the third book will not live up to my image of the first two. I stop watching Ghost in the Shell because the timing isn't right. I stop and I worry and I worry.

I stop because I feel fragile. I want to change. So I will.

More on that to come, probably. Thanks for reading and I'd be glad if you left a comment.

There are only two characters within this story. They are a small boy and a female demon, neither of which are named. The story starts off from the demon’s perspective. The small boy comes across the demon trapped within a circle; if she exits said circle she catches aflame. Upon their meeting, the demon trades cooked chestnuts for stories. The way the small boy interacts with the demon is quite interesting, which is one of the reasons I enjoyed this so much, as he has trouble deciding whether he sympathizes with the demon, or fears her. One of the main reasons I liked this story is because it has a very unique concept and interesting characters along with beautiful artwork. It’s also a good starter novel because it's short, while still retaining excellent artwork and story, allowing those who are not ready to commit a large amount of time to visual novels to give one a try.

Hello, everyone! Rose here, bringing you the first official recognition team post.

A few weeks ago this kickstarter was announced on the forums. It is a korean visual novel originally made for the iOS and released back in 2010. It has an interesting story and in their testimonial, lots of people suggests that this novel is clearly going to give you some nice feels. I'll copy paste a bit of their introduction below, so if you enjoy it, check their kickstarter page. Furthermore, if you like it, consider backing them up. The next stretch goal will give Lucy a japanese voice acting, with 6 days to go and two thousand dollars away from it, any kind of support will be surely more than welcome. Lastly, if you want someone to talk about Lucy with you, there's a thread in the Ongoing Projects board, so feel free to comment there. Thanks a lot to the team for making such a good looking VN and what I believe to be an amazing story.

Lucy -The eternity she wished for- is a Visual Novel, about a boy and an android. You play as the boy, who faces decisions and moral dilemmas in this near-future world. Depending on your choices, the life of this boy will lead in many different directions.

The game is a remake which was originally released back in 2010 in Korea, and highly praised for its great story. It has been redone for the international audience, with greatly improved graphics and streamlined storyline.

If any of you have doubts about how good this game is going to be, doubt no more. In the genre of visual novels, the quality of story-telling is very important for most gamers. Lack of story-telling in games often leads to a lot of dissatisfaction and makes many gamers feel like they’ve wasted their time in supporting it.

We know that everyone has different tastes and we can’t satisfy everyone, but there’s one thing we can say. This is a story that has touched many hearts and continues to have a strong impact on those who partake in this compelling journey.

We as a team believe that the most important aspect of a visual novel is not simply pretty drawings or a great story, but the combination of both, in harmony to create a memorable experience which will last long after the game is completed. With the experience we've gained and the many hours spent making the first game, we have been diligently working to refine and perfect the new 'Lucy'.

Hello, everyone! I'm Rose and I'll be in charge of the Recognition Team, which consists of me and myself so far. I'll be looking for more members soon so if you're interested in helping me, keep an eye out for announcements on the "Help us Out" board. Tay's post pretty much explained what will be done by the team so I guess I'll be only sharing some info about me.

I've been reading VNs for almost a year now and I've been in love with the medium since my first contact with it. Guess what? Yeah, my first one was Katawa Shoujo. I decided to volunteer because I believe that lots of cool people and projects, even the less noticed personal ones, deserve some recognition, so trying to be part of the team was the natural course of action. I don't really have much more to talk about me other than misc info which you can find on my profile, so I'll stop here.

Now, as for what you can expect from me and the team. Primarily, we plan to highlight projects and threads as well as individuals who deserve it. As the team leader, I'll make sure some quality standards are met to when posts are constructed, as well as work on additional methods to thank all the amazing people we have on the VN community as a whole.
