I answered the question earlier in this thread.
While the situation with the interface is a lot different today (new people and it's partially translated), the part about spoiling the story still stand.

Regarding injecting the translation, it does work and while I have fixed most issues, it's still not glitch free. I prefer to play it safe and injecting translated text was my first task before doing anything else at all. When switching to the HD version, the first thing I did was to make sure I could control the text ingame. I did that even before transferring the already translated text. It wouldn't be fun to finish the translation and then discover the VN engine refuse new text.

In the past week we had one translator working exclusively on translating images. Images are not part of the lines, which are counted for statistics and this will screw the numbers for this week. Image editing turns out to work much faster than I had expected and more than 200 images have been edited already. However getting them back into the VN is not trivial and once again I have resorted to scripting to avoid crashes. So far scripting this has been slower than editing the images themselves, but my focus is not daily progress, but rather getting any images to work at all and from that perspective it has been a complete success.

First status update of the year and lots of stuff happened starting around when I posted the last update.
    @RaurosFalls continued translating Karin's route
@UnusuallyNormal joined and started translating stuff related to Ichigo starting with some side stories
@Naurlas joined and started adding English text to button graphics and similar
@Rossignol joined and started making png files with names in English for whoever is speaking
@tymmur had a busy week providing everybody with everything they need in order to work
This mean progress has gone from faster to way faster and we now have progress in other stuff than just number of translated lines. The most eye catching change this week is that names have now started to be translated ingame, both in the main screen (png files) and backlog (pure programming by me), mainly because it's the only ingame graphic change I have had time to add so far.

Despite the good progress, we can still use more people, particularly related to the text (translators, editors, TLC etc). Graphics is another story. I can't think of any unassigned tasks apart from decensoring.

Last, but not least, the "usual" progress table. The line count is great and you can really tell the number of translators has doubled. However I suspect the time of year and days off plays a role as well.

The translation is finally progressing again as RaurosFalls has resumed work on Zakuro's route.

I guess it's time to make a quick update. Not sure why people can assume this to be dead. If you look at the progress link in the second post, the numbers increase nearly daily.

RaurosFalls is back in action and is currently working on the last half of the last file in Yuzu's route. That will be the second route to be finished.

My current goal is to get everything up and running with the HD version and transfer the translated lines. While it might be a a newer version of the same engine, so much has changed that it's essentially a new engine, which I have to figure out. It's progressing steadily and will just be a matter of time. It turns out that most of the lines are unchanged, which means the translation can be reused. However they changed some lines, which will likely result in no fully translated files. How much new translation work this result in is still unknown.

I have decided to drop support for the 2008 version. One reason is that given the difference in the engines, making it work on both would be too much work. The other reason is playing around with the HD version is.... wow... just wow. The resolution is significantly higher and the visual improvements from that are better than I expected. However I would say the resolution is really a minor thing compared to the other changes. The new engine can scale, mirror and move sprites quite freely and it seems all scenes have been rewritten to make full use of this. Zooming in on something in the background happens from time to time and the zoomed in vision can move around according to which items are of interest in the text, like center vision on one character sprite and then turn the head to center on another if the other one starts talking. Most impressively is the moving background of the sidewalk where slowly zooming in gives the impression of 3D where you walk into the background, even though it's just a 2D image. In other words, the remake is significantly better even if we ignore the resolution. No comments on the added contents or training because I haven't come that far yet.

Just to keep everyone informed, translation has restarted for this game once again. I'm not very sure of the current progress at the moment, but I'll try to figure out everything as soon as I can to give specific details.

I did an interesting experiment. I took the HD screenshots and searched the net for similar screenshots from the old version. I decided to go all age only, meaning I can post all of it in this post. I could make my own screenshots to make them more identical, but I don't think it's worth the time. I might write a bit of code to make the very same screenshot in both versions once I have both versions.

I finished my programming project, meaning I can now pull text from the game script and insert it again. A brief look tells me that it is working, but due to the importance of no failure at this point, I plan to walk through all files and get the computer to show changes to make sure it didn't change anything I didn't plan to change. With a bit of luck, the system I have made will be plug-n-play for the HD version as well. A nice bonus is that it will be much easier to translate now and much harder to mess up the code while doing so. I will write more about how easy it is to translate once the system is ready to be used for actual translation work (not just for testing).

News on the official HD release
Looks like there are new info for the HD version. It was originally scheduled for a release on the 27th, but now it says 24th, though it doesn't seem to be updated everywhere. HD requirements have been increased from 5 to 9 GB. The minimum OS requirement is listed as vista on the official site, but getchu and similar tends to write that it works on XP.

I wouldn't consider any of those changes major, but they are still big enough to be mentioned.

I have done some thinking about what to do regarding moving the translation to a new script and has come up with a plan. We should have some text only version of each script file where just the text is present. That is Japanese line and then on the next line the translation. Last is a blank line to tell the lines apart. This should be a hybrid, meaning it contains the lines from both versions and identical lines are merged if possible. Naturally this would require some sort of scripting or it would take ages to make.

Translator(s) can then translate simply to editing that file. This will make it clean and not give translators access to code (like sprite changing), reducing the risk of translator introduced bugs due to carelessness.

When the translation should be used, a script reads the file and then inserts it back into the script files. Using two different scripts or one script with two different start arguments, it would be possible to use the same translation in both versions. Keeping the old version "alive" makes sense as the remake has higher system requirements and it would likely not require much more work than just moving the translation. Creating a usable game script using a perl script is not really different from the current setup where a perl script ensures the encoding and similar to be correct.

This should work if the lines are mostly the same and I assume they will be. Rewriting all the lines would require redoing all the voice files, which mean there is a compelling financial reason not to change the lines too much. Translating the remake also require the ability to extract and insert files in the remake engine. Time will tell if that turns out to be a problem. The wait for the remake seems awfully long when you want to play it. It seems even longer when speculating on how to handle the engine for a translation project.

Looks like MusumakerHD is announced http://digitalcute.com/digitalcute/musumakerhd

720p graphics, better training animation and more contents (or whatever they add. Haven't quite figured it out) sounds great, but with a new script, the existing translation can't be copied. In a best case scenario I can write a perl script to look up the lines and then paste them into the new script where the Japanese line haven't been changed, but that might require a bit of luck. All the modified graphics will have to be redone. I'm not 100% sure what I should think about this. It's so great and bad at the same time.

Naturally there is technically nothing preventing us from sticking to the current version, but..... I want the HD version with the extra content.
