I will technically be finishing Higurashi soon. It's been a very fun ride so far and I've loved every second of it. Later moving on to the side stories. After I will play Clannad or Continue Iwahime

    Loved higurashi!

I found CLANNAD and Iwaihime both a bore, but for different reasons: I just played CLANNAD after many VNs, and I find it underwhelming and messy, especially when I don't care for the whole "family" theme throughout the whole game.

For Iwaihime, I just found it bad overall lol. Bland "mary sue" protagonist and not very interesting cast, too many descriptions where some gore could be added and meh conclusion due to the two previously stated issues.

Hope it's just my opinion and you enjoy it tho! :wahaha:

I've been busy with life but managed to advance on Umineko and finished What's your wifi password? It's a short, silly OEVN about you being bored, looking for the wifi password of your friend's place and instead finding her brother. It's a wholesome talk :677632610700230696:

  2. Alrighty, it's been a long time since I last talked about what I've been reading!
I finally resumed Umineko last week! I keep a daily log on Notion, so I'll just:

    DAY 41 (DEC 9) — Episode 2's "???" + beginning Episode 3

    Spoiler

    DAY 42 (DEC 10) — Episode 3

    Spoiler

Read 30 minutes today, but nothing to share here!

    Spoiler

I do find it a bit sus that Beato demands ppl not to see the magic... like, why...?

  3. Interesting! Well, Little Busters is definitely a comfort read to me: it deals with the topic of friends and found family, as well as fear of change. It's mostly comedy for the common route, but it's pretty touching on all its routes and the Refrain/True Route gets me emotionally invested every damn time. It also has some weird mystery that I enjoyed.

The House in Fata Morgana is another one I enjoyed and helped me in times of need, but it's a bit on the heavier side... it's a gothic (in looks and content) romance and tragedy, and deals with the lives of the people who inhabited this strange mansion over the centuries... All in all, it truly helped get out of my trauma shell and gave me more strength to deal with what life throws at me, even if it's still difficult.

Finally, there's Marco & The Galaxy Dragon. While Fata Morgana was heavier, this one is the light and comical story most people think of as something to distract yourself with. You know Guardians of the Galaxy? It's the first thing that comes to my mind when I watch the first scene, but imagine that but they come back to Earth looking for a treasure. It's whacky adventures with magic and shit. Pretty fun, would recommend!

Since you are already reading through Higurashi, I won't recommend it again, but that one also made me bawl my eyes out and helped me oh so much too :kosame:

The description of issues with the prose reminds me of another VN that I thought has issues: Double Exposure. At the time, I wrote a vndb note with (among other things): A kind of cool concept with some nice moments both cute and tense. But god, the prose for the viewpoint character Serena and her narration is really bad. When you try to write something flowery — with big words and all that jazz — you really need to be on the ball, and the frequent awkward phrasings and plain misuses of words on show here fall very short of the mark. This also spills over into Lizzie's dialogue, which at times feels unnatural. I think I'm a bit unusually sensitive to this, as I realized when I discussed how turned off I had been with lesiak (I think I picked up the VN after he discussed it briefly in a post, so naturally I had to complain at him for a bit).

Overall, I think the point I made in my old remark that writing more plainly is the safer option for most writers is very relevant. Most writers in VNs just are not good enough — often have not read enough in that style to know what is good — to make it work. I will be much more forgiving of writing that is a bit plain than writing with the ornamentation put on all wrong. But maybe it's just me.

Nah, I feel you on this one. I like it when the writing has a point to it, but it doesn't seem to be the case for this one. Sure, she's an edgy teen who thinks others are trash—like almost any teen—but the pretentious writing makes me feel not care for her. She just sounds very emo (lol)

SHINRAI -broken beyond despair- it was an alright Halloween Party murder mystery between 10 middle school friends. What's great about it is that you can have totally logically sound but incorrect deductions at the very end as to who the master mind is and you'll feel like a total dumbass afterwards when the protagonist realizes her mistake. 7/10

Oh wow, someone who played this one! Fuwa interviewed the dev and has a review on it, if you'd like to check it out :watame:

I may have a problem, my wallet is crying a bit, but weirdly I've spent less on VN's than I would for the same "time investment" in "normal games".

I can't say the same for myself :nani: I remember at the beginning of this year spending my first ever salary on VNs.... like, around 200€ on them. I swore to never again.

Wow! Such a nice welcome)) Thanl you!
Actualy we only develop it) Im just serching for places where people might be intrested in VN and our ganre) Maybe in early 2024 we will relese demo)
But.... after ur replays i think i will stick here for a while)

In fact, lately I haven’t even had anyone to talk to about the topic of novels. There are too few people who like to read, and even less people who are not against 18+ with a touch of realism.
By the way, sorry if i can’t flood here, but I’m always looking for good VNs. Perhaps my favorites are Kara no Shojo trilogi and World End Syndrome. I went through many more, but they didn’t sink into my soul so much. Now I'm going to finish reading Swan Song. So I will be glad to find something useful on your forum))

Oooh, I see you're into utsuge, nice. Kara no Shoujo is up there for me too ❤️ I really liked Soundless!

If you need Denpa recommendations, then we can just intro you to Soundless

Seconded. It was a rec for me as well and I absolutely loved it. And it received an art update recently too!

Fair I suppose. doing fantl for clout actually work considering the size of this community. Though how many VN translation jobs are out there? That's what I wanna know. Happy that it worked out for you, but it's not like there's room for 20 or even 10 more like you, I bet

Also surprised to see you're from Portugal, since I'm also from Portugal. Cheers

You could say that about almost any creative job, honestly. Like... drawing! You can spend your entire life drawing, but it's a matter of mostly luck and contacts to grow and be "successful". Also hey, tugas everywhere LOL

Having something on your resume doesn't actually give you anything. It gives you the possibility of giving you something in the future. And even said future can be nary attributed to one specific thing on your resume

You get nothing for being a fan translator of japanese eroge. And that's why no one does it. Sorry to tell you this

Idk man, thanks to all those years on the fantl circle, I managed to find a job related to what I enjoy doing. The otaku and VN industry is pretty much based on recomendations and contacts, not only skill or higher education. Hell, most professional translators worked as fan translators for years before becoming professional.

  11. I've played Tiny Bunny and while it doesn't necessarily match your preferences, it's sooo good! The atmosphere is oppressing, keeping you on your toes.

I actually haven't played much horror, so I can't give pure horror recs. However, I've played 11eyes and the atmosphere is hella creepy a lot of times. It's an action chuuni, so if you still don't want to play it, it's understandable. I didn't really like the horror aspect in Iwaihime, but who knows.

  12. I haven't said anything here in a while, so let's see...

Confession: I like when things are "way too artsy", even if sometimes the meaning can get a little lost.

I don't want it to completely butcher the story, but most of the times people are just too conservative abt these things! :wahaha:
Confession 2: I found a lot of the maggot guro scenes in Maggot Baits hot 😳

    JackJeanne

    jack-jeanne-data-uscita-01-1620x800.jpg

JackJeanne is a special Otome Game written and illustrated by Tokyo Ghoul's Ishida Sui and it's everything I wanted it to be!

My heart broke with the cancelation of Act-Age and A3! (English Version) so I had a mighty need of more theater fiction.

Combine my desire for theater and otome games and anyone can see why JackJeanne had my entire focus despite drowning in games.

I started with Suzu's Route and I took 1,5 weeks for it lol

JackJeanne is just super long for an otome game (4-6 hours per route is what I'm used from Otomate).

I really enjoy the preparations for the plays, finding out what kind of story we get to see this time and who will play who. Everyone doing their best learning their character, thinking about their role in the play and feeling like you're not good enough.

When it comes to the plays themself, I like the Fall Performance for the quality acting and the Winter Performance for the feelings it gave me the most.

The Univeil Performance was quite something too tho! Especially since it will differ in every route.

I also enjoy when the "Girl protag pretends to be a boy" tropes come into play. Suzu catching feelings for his bro not knowing Kisa's a girl and the comedy that follows. It get's even funnier once he knows lol

      Reveal hidden contents

Please let the hot spring event happen for everyone! Suzu was SO MAD once he realized that he unknowingly bathed with her. Hilarious!

It's also funny how worried Kisa get's about hiding her gender when she absolutely has nothing to worry about. Rhodonite is femboy central and has boys much more feminine than she is!

I can't wait to see how the other routes will go! I think I'm most curious about Neji and Kai. Neji for being a hot mess who really get's under everyone's skin.

      Reveal hidden contents

Winter was painful and it was 100% His fault! It was great but man...

And Kai since I really sympathize with him. He's a good guy who deserves more than he usually get's. I want a happy end for him!

I think I can already recommend JackJeanne to anyone who likes stories about making a play, stories about pretending to be a gender you're not and if you like femboys lol

Aw, cool to see more people here playing otome! Jack Jeanne is one that caught my eye for sure!!

I myself am currently reading Umineko and Synesthesia. I'm keeping a daily log for Umineko, maybe I should share that one here! Great, I'll do just that! ... Starting tomorrow. :wahaha:

Synesthesia is very interesting for sure, though the voice acting gave me a bit of whiplash because they are AI (synthetic voices, at least). I got used to them pretty quickly, and I guess it's a fine alternative for people who don't have the budget for it. There's always the option to mute it (and the games does tell you that at the beginning, which I found pretty nice).
The art is fine and all, though there were two things that bothered me a little. Not to the point of annoyance, but I did notice. 1) The female characters are much more detailed than their male counterparts. That isn't exactly uncommon, of course, but it's to the point of looking at different artstyles (which might not be a stretch?) and 2) the girls are... way too detailed. Like, if I had clothes that wrinkly, I'd have to iron them! :iamslain: I'm just playing around, it isn't that bad, but as an artist who struggled with that at the beginning, it's something I take notice of hahaha
